Another disadvantage is that the least worn battery discharges first. After couple of weeks of a new laptop when the removable battery wears a little, T480 starts to use (discharge) the internal battery first , which kills the purpose of having a dual battery setup. There wasn't a problem like this in the older Thinkpads like T460 etc.
no known solution for that?
@@gnooy13mdfk What a disappointment, the same thing happens to me, I think that the truth is, in reality, it is worth going for something more modern like a t14 or something like that unfortunately
Disconnect internal battery if you don't need it or want to keep it in tact for some reason. Get a 72Wh battery if you need more battery life. Just use your laptop as usual and don't bother with the internal battery, just prevent the internal battery from charging above 80% and discharging below 20%. And if you need even more battery life, just get a second 72Wh battery to be able to easily switch over to a charged cell. That way you can also use your laptop as a powerbank, which is useful.

I run Linux on mine. With the 24Wh ext. battery and the internal battery, realistically I am looking at 8 to 9 hours time to exhaustion (if the batteries were 100% healthy) if I charge the machine to 100%. If I had a bigger battery I could expect even more time (+50% or +100%).

Would you still recommend this? I am starting my compsci major so I need a laptop to take notes and code on. Have you used it with visual studio 2019? Even my workstation struggles with vs sometimes, so I'm just wondering if performance is acceptable.

Working programmer here. For the most part, I've been happy with the T480 I've been using for the last three years. I especially like its flexibility (ports and upgrades galore) and mobility (I travelled a lot pre-covid). I haven't used Visual Studio 2019, but I do occasionally use Intellij, which is also known to be a resource hog, and it performs adequately. Having 8 threads on a U-series processor was a really big deal when I bought it.
I've occasionally run into some frustrating throttling issues, but that doesn't come up while coding in an IDE, or even running servers in VMs. (More of an issue when gaming, or screensharing while running heavy computation). I can't really say how it would compare to your workstation without knowing your specs, but even if I were to upgrade to the P15 Gen 2 I've been eyeing for home use, I can see myself using my T480 for coding for the next three years.
Hey man, it depends on the price. I really like the Thinkpad Sturdiness and the battery life to be fair, but lately I had to open it up and give it a little clean since it was throttling a bit. Right now if I had to pick a king for on the go productivity it would be the MacBook Air M1. For around 900$ it just can't be beat!
This T480 is perfect for Computer Science program. I use it for my study
@@jordanwilliams1546 hey, I heard about t480 laptops having charging issues and the type c connecter being soldered into the motherboard. How is the connector, is it easy to break and can the other type c connecter be used to charge it?

The prices I keep hearing are baffling. How can these things be that cheap over there. I wish I could find them at such prices over here. Maybe I should ask to be gifted one. 😔

Exact same cinebench R20 score as I got with my i7-4702MQ T440p, not bad for an 6 year old laptop it's just a shame it's so bulky.
Those processors were real powerhouses, the main benefit of this laptop is the battery life plus lower heat output. But in raw performance both laptops should be around the same :)
wat shud i get..a new t470 or a used yoga x1 or a used t480?..all fall under 310 usd

Is it possible to replace the screen with a touch-screen display and enable multi-touch gestures?

Windows has better battery management than Linux? Did you test the battery with linux? What distro?
I used TLP with Ubuntu on my X230 and it still had worse battery life than windows (about 1 hour less while getting 4 hours in windows).
In this T480 I haven't installed a linux distro yet since I mostly use VM's
I think the ThinkPad E14 and E15 gen 2 AMD are what you should buy at this point in history.

Can you add a 1tb sata ssd while keeping the 256gb nvme ssd? I want to add extra storage to it but not sure if the 256gb nvme ssd is taking up the same slot
A normal sized m.2 SSD uses the same space as the sata SSD via an adapter bracket.
You can, however, install a smaller 2242 form factor m.2 SSD in WWAN slot. The largest I could find was a the Lexar NM520, but it does heat up quickly, so don't plan on using it for extended heavy disk I/O.
If you put the 2.5inch drive bay in the you could do a sata drive

Yeah it is! Something like this www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-02HK705-Intel-AX200NGW-NGFF-Wireless/313115823331 for peace of mind (even though non Lenovo branded wifi cards might work as well)

Hello Im in Civil engineering and my brother is a programmer and can get me from his company a t480 i7 32gb of RAM 1tb SSD for 350€, you think its worth it? I want to use it as an everyday laptop to take to some classes or to study outside of my house but also wondering if its snappy in daily use ( i have a capable desktop)

Same one I just paid over 500 usd for. i7-8650U quad core, 1TB SSD, 32GB DDR4, FHD Touchscreen, Fingerprint reader etc. Also came with Windows 11 Pro installed. Grade A refurbished, looks and feels new.
Anyways, I'm very happy with it so far, seems like a nice machine for the price.
I do know what that same amount of money gets you purchasing new, which is not much at all with laptops.
I dont do gaming or anything like that, but I am curious to know how well it would do.
New 9 cell batteries for the x230 don't cost that much.
Do you have them? How long do they last?
DO NOT BUY THESE!
They are either new-old-stock battery shells with crap cells in them, or recased used cells. They dont last long, and the feet fall off.
Also I don't know about X230, but in T430 (which is basically the same) one of the BIOS updates introduced whitelists for battery packs. So only genuine Lenovo ones works (which are crazy expensive and I think they are old stock...)

My T480 hotkeys F4 and F8 to F12 just stopped working well,
Replacement keyboards for the T480 are quite cheap and easy to swap with a couple of screws underneath and then gently prise it out from the top. Swap a couple of connectors over and put the new keyboard in.
My one of t480 get heat bu another model of t480 doesnot heat more. what is reason?
Do they have both the same specifications?

Imagine it like this... if all you have ever used is a simple laptop screen it is decent. But as soon as you put it next to an Apple Laptop or good IPS Dell Monitor you notice all the difference in Colour
there is a version with better screen. mine has this more simple screen. i always use an external monitor when at home.
i am having a nightmare with usb-c problem. update your thubderbolt firmware to avoid problem
@@felipebutcher I haven't had this issue yet, but I did update the firmware via Lenovo vantage. Regarding the monitor, I really wish something with 400 nits was available for outdoor use.
@@InsideTheGeeks yes the monitor is like the old computers. but thinkpads are like this. i had many in my life since they were IBM. this time i replaced my motherboard and had the same issue again. i gave up and bought a dell now and it has a wonderful ips screen.

No
Those are ThinkPad X1 Yoga, 360° variant of the X1 carbon and tend to cost a bit more. They have a pen included with dedicated storage for it.

The truth is, the battery life I get on my T480 is a bit shorter on Linux than ITG got on Windows - 8 to 9 hours, less under load.

yeah, you just need the thinkpad and docking, and 4k monitor 27 inch, mechanical keyboard and game mouse, you will be good

I've upgraded mine, and it wasn't too hard :)
If you know what 100% srgb should look like, you'll notice the colors kinda suck, but I didn't complain when I first bought it.
The max brightness isn't great for outdoor use, but it's otherwise adequate.
