  • Mara Jade will eventually become an important part of Star Wars Canon. It is inevitable. Does her connection to the Dark Side of the Force and her relationship with Emperor Palpatine as the Emperor's Hand cause her to cross paths with Luke? Will she be killed by Ben Solo? Will Mara and Luke have a child? Find out all of my theories about Mara Jade Skywalker's canonization in this video!

    I have an observation about this that no one else seems to have noticed. The Ahsoka season 1 finale actually created the perfect opportunity to introduce Mara, and it's one that wouldn't require narrative gymnastics to pull off. Thrawn's back now and is presumably gathering allies and resources. Unfortunately for him, Ezra is also back, and Luke is out there somewhere as we saw in Mando and BOBF. We know Thrawn takes the threat of Jedi seriously, so it stands to reason that he'd want to eliminate them from the playing field. We also know that he hates wasting resources, so he might think that sending troopers after them would be an unnecessary expense. Morgan is dead and Baylan and Shin are stuck in the other galaxy, so they're out of the running. The bounty hunters we've seen established at this time are either chilling with Boba's crew (Fennec, Krrsantan) or dead (Cad Bane). The only option left is to hire an assassin, preferably one who has Imperial ties and experience with Force-sensitives. Mara is the only character from the HTTE timeline who fits that description.
    It would be very easy to introduce her to non-EU fans by first setting her up as an ex-Imperial agent hunting down the remaining Jedi nuisances on Thrawn's behalf. Then they could incorporate her vendetta against Luke Skywalker and her connection to Palpatine as her ulterior motives for taking the job. There's a possibility Thrawn could know something of this and use that knowledge to treat her as a pawn in his larger plan, since he did figure out who she was in the books. Obviously I could see her mission going haywire and her having to team up with her enemies for some reason, leading her to have to reconcile her conditioned hatred of Luke with her growing fondness for him.
    While I'd love to see her onscreen and wish Disney would get over their aversion to recasting (which would solve the OG trio problem), I do like your idea of a parallel book series. Zahn himself said at a con a couple of years ago that he would love to write for Mara and Karrde again, so this would be a great chance for him to do so.

      I completely agree! I was thinking the same thing! Although now it doesn’t seem like the underworld will play an important role in this adaptation of the story, Mara could still be very vital to it. They could tie her into Boba’s story a bit too since in Legends she infiltrates Jabba’s palace as a dancer. She could find a way to infiltrate Boba’s crew, use Boba’s connections to the Mandalorians to find Din Djarin and Grogu, and use Grogu to find Luke. I’d love to see her story brought to life

    • @aijalonrex4345
      @aijalonrex4345 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I also think it'd be nice to see her play a part in Palpatine’s eventual Return since we desperately need all the content we can get to explain it. And I think the recasting issue could be resolved more or less in an animated series similar to Clone Wars set maybe 15 years after RotJ. With your idea, Luke and Mara could be married by then and hopefully have a child. Perhaps before the sequels, Mara and the child disappear and they make a return in the Ray movie as the child would be around 30ish
      Side note: I always liked the idea of Anakin being the new mortis god. Ahsoka as the daughter and Ben solo as the son would be poetic

    Unless new comics or books contradict this, I think it’s totally possible that Luke sensed a future where Ben kills Mara-not just destroy the temple. Just like his father, he tries to find a way to stop the death of his wife, and in a moment of weakness, he considers killing Ben, prompting Ben to flee and actually kill Mara anyway.

    I agree with you that she could play a part in Luke's tragedy but I think that would only work in live action. They perfected the Luke in Book of Boba I think they could AI Luke and make it happen. Then the sequels would be redeemed in many fans eyes even though it works for me on its own

    • @starwarslads

      I’m gonna have to disagree with you there. TBoBF Luke was close to perfect visually, but I still have my doubts about a deepfake face being able to show the range of emotion that’s needed to show two characters in love. We could see their initial meeting (reminiscent of the Thrawn Trilogy) when they become friends, but not lovers. But once the romance starts, I’d prefer it in books or animation. At least until we reach the 10 years or so from TFA when we could bring back Mark Hamill to play the character.

    I hated the sequel trilogy but I imagined one of the ways they could potentially fix it was like… Ben Solo killing Mara Jade. Kinda like what happened in the comics, just change who killed Mara. But I have to say… this is also a very interesting angle as well. I hope Disney listens and somehow makes it that Mara’s death is what leads to his disillusionment. I'm not the biggest fan of cherry-picking out old EU characters and putting them in the new canon. They aren't really the same character. They're just taking a name and giving it to someone knew who didn't go through the same experiences as the original did that made them the characters they are and why they were loved in the first place. To me it's just key dangling.

    • @starwarslads
      @starwarslads  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I understand what you mean, but to me personality, action, and core values makes the character rather than the specific stories they’re apart of. It might be my lifelong love of comics, but is Batman any less Batman in the animated series, The Dark Knight Trilogy, or The Batman than he is in the comics even though he goes through a different variation of the same events? It’s his actions and responses in trying moments, coupled with a consistent personality core, that makes the character the same.

      I don’t think it’s ever stated where that is. My theory is that during the production of TFA they had intended us to believe that was how Kylo massacred Luke’s Jedi Order on Ossus. That shot appears right after the shot of Luke sitting by R2, and it starts to rain during the Luke shot too. There are bodies all around Kylo’s feet. However, in The Last Jedi and The Rise of Kylo Ren, the way Kylo leaves the Academy was changed from JJ’s original idea. That’s always been my theory anyway.

    Timothy Zahn would have to approve Filoni or Kathleen's plans for Mara. If they change her character too much or mitigate her storyline or impact, Zahn won't approve this. Also, AI is really expensive, so they can't incorporate a younger Luke for that many scenes and he is essential for Mara's character development. Sadly, I think it is too late for Mara. There is a slight chance she could appear in some canon novels, but never on-screen.

      That’s not necessarily true. Luke follows the same path in Legends at the point in the timeline during 9 ABY (which is when Mando and TBoBF take place). He’s researching the Jedi, hunting down Jedi artifacts, learning about their customs and ways… We have to remember when the 90s books were written, George Lucas hadn’t invented the ideology of the Prequel Jedi yet so there’s naturally contradictions. Luke in Canon is closing himself off from attachments in 9 ABY similar to how he doesn’t seek out a relationship in Legends. But once he meets Mara Jade, that facade starts to shatter. Still, it takes him nearly 10 years before Luke proposes to her. We haven’t seen Luke in Canon at that time yet.

    Good video, but I must respectfully disagree with you Liam. The biggest reason being is that the Original Trilogy characters are different in Canon than they were in Legends. Luke isn't as overpowered in Canon as he was in Legends. And because he's no longer the big focus of the Star Wars Saga, especially in the post-Sequel Trilogy era we're in in real life, Mara's tie to Luke doesn't make sense, because we don't see him as much as we did in Legends. And right now, Star Wars needs to move away from Legends, and the Original Trilogy characters if it's to survive as a franchise, because Legends was hampered by not exploring other characters as much in the post-Return of the Jedi novels and comics and it's one of the reasons people dropped off of the Star Wars EU in the mid to late 2000s and into the early 2010s before Disney took over and rightfully put that continuity aside. But, now, we're once again facing that same scenario, and that's why I'm glad that new characters like Ahsoka, Hera, Sabine, Mando, Grogu, and others are able to stand on their own without needing Luke, Han, and Leia to come in and save the day all the time.

      I agree with you that new Star Wars characters should and are able to stand on their own without needing Skywalker Saga characters for support. Where I'm going to have to disagree with you is in regard to Star Wars needing to move away from Luke and the OT characters. I believe there is room for both. The story of Luke Skywalker has not been close to told yet. As I detail in the video, there is so much time between RotJ and the fall of Luke's Jedi Academy to make the story of Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade just as impactful as it was in Legends. If we did a book series that chronicled the events of the OT characters between RotJ and TFA, Luke Skywalker would once again be a central focus for the franchise. Again, I don't expect the story of Luke and Mara to play out in Ahsoka or The Mando-verse, but there is plenty of room for their story to be told in other mediums. Thanks for your comment.

      @@starwarslads Here's the thing though, we don't need to see everything that leads Luke from Return of the Jedi to The Force Awakens. As a fan I hate to say this, but Star Wars has stagnated because all it does is gap fill. And it's been stagnate since Revenge of the Sith. Yes, it got that brief resurgence when The Force Awakens came out in 2015, but by the time The Rise of Skywalker came out, people outside the fanbase didn't care anymore. We, the fans, keep the franchise on life support, but there's not enough people coming in and caring enough to read the novels and comics, or play the video games. The only way Star Wars is going to survive is if it evolves beyond just filling in the gaps between movies. And if that means leaving Luke's story where it is now, with his life between Episode VI and Episode VII a mystery then so be it.

      Maybe in the sense that she is a female Dark Side character who could turn to the light in the Canon Adaptation of HttE in Ahsoka, The Mandalorian, Skeleton Crew, and the New Republic film. Other than that, Shin has literally nothing in common with Mara, including Mara’s most important role as the foil to Luke Skywalker.

      So Timothy Zahn writing Mara in a Canon novel series wouldn’t be good because Disney is publishing it? Let’s stop thinking everything has to be handled in TV and Film. Books are in the Star Wars Canon timeline too, and Zahn has written 6 wonderful books in Canon starring Thrawn. I wholeheartedly believe he can do the same with Mara Jade.

      @@starwarsladsanything with Mara would completely change the way we view Luke and Ben. It would make Luke even more imperfect. I saw you make a comment agreeing with someone who talked about how it would be cool if Luke tried to kill Ben due to seeing a future of Ben killing Mara. However, this would only be a parallel to Anakin’s tragedy. The whole point of the original trilogy is that Luke surpassed the previous order, that he found the right path, one that is different from the sith or the old Jedi. He found the flaws in the system and changed it for the better. Even the sequels agree (but handles poorly) “we are what we grew beyond.” If the situation you agreed with does come to pass, then Luke’s journey would be destroyed even more.

    • @starwarslads
      @starwarslads  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@yanyanzhang5813 I think you misunderstood what I am saying. In the way I would introduce Mara into Canon, the thing that would change about the way we view Luke through the lens of The Last Jedi is that we more fully understand what pushes Luke to the point where he'd even, if only in a fleeting moment, consider raising his lightsaber against his unarmed nephew. Rian Johnson already sets up Luke's exile to parallel Anakin's own tragedy. However because of Anakin's fall, Luke is anxious, and in some ways, obsessed with preventing himself or his family from repeating the actions of Anakin. Luke still learns and grows beyond Anakin's, Ben's, and his own failings in The Last Jedi as we current see in. the film. However, with the death of Mara in Canon (possibly caused by Ben in an accidental display of dark power), we will see the burdens that Luke was once facing at the beginning of his journey rebuilding the Jedi Order in The New Republic Era post-RotJ resurface, bubbling up into a flurry of resentment and emotion directed at Ben for his possible (even if accidental) role in Mara's death. As I mentioned in the video, we see in Legends what Luke is capable of when he loses Mara. His raising his lightsaber against Ben only to realize the darkness of his actions actually speaks truer to the near-perfection in Luke's light-persona than his annihilation of Lumiya in Legends. Again, I never once abdecated for Luke to duel with, attack, or try to kill Ben. What I'm talking about is understanding that scene in The Last Jedi more fully, where in that moment we have a much more fully realized Luke. One that we can logically see would make a universe-altering decision/mistake. A Luke who would rather go into exile than deal with the world he feels he has failed.

Doesn't really sound like you read my thoughtful response though. Obviously, I completely disagree with you, but that's your opinion. You don't like the way something was done in the sequels? How about we take the approach of trying to make something better? Let's reclaim a bit of what we liked about the character and his arc in previous material. OR I guess we can all sit around, mope, and spit out hyperboles. Nothing changes unless we look at the past and strive for improvement.

    Do you think that there's any truth to rumor/story that George Lucas hates Mara Jade? Do you think that Filoni has brought George Lucas into helping to shape or alter Mara Jade's character and story in what is now cannon?

    • @starwarslads
      @starwarslads  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think there is a lot of truth to that. Not that he hates the character, but rather, he isn’t a fan of the idea of Luke being married. It obviously clashes with his vision for the Jedi (although they got married before George revealed that Jedi were not allowed to have attachments in TPM in ‘99 and more clearly in AotC in ‘02). George also doesn’t like the idea of The Old Republic or the Sith ever having a unified Empire and army. In fact, George didn’t like most of the stories told under his reign of Lucasfilm in Star Wars Legends. But despite all of that, George still let those stories and characters build and thrive all under the promise that if he wanted to retcon them, he could whenever he wanted to. For the most part, he took the approach of “if it makes the company money, I’ll let it exist.” So to circle back to your question, no I don’t think George Lucas’ feelings on a character or time period will influence what Dave Filoni does in Ahsoka and his film with Legends characters. Dave Filoni has been on record saying that if there’s a character from Canon or Legends that already exists and fills the same role in his story that a new character could, he’s in favor of using the old character because of its history with the fandom. If there was a need to introduce a Mara Jade type character, he’d use Mara. Though, I still think her story will be and belongs in books.

      The Old Republic is Legends and is still being produced. I get what you mean, but I just feel differently. Legends is a complete timeline. It exists separately and will always be there. Since it is a separate timeline, whatever is done in Canon has no baring on the stories in Legends. We already have Mara Jade (Skywalker), and nothing the Mouse shits out will ever, EVER replace that or take it away. Fuck Mouse Wars.
