    Kepis were around as well as foragers caps from military service. I sport a kepi pretty regularly even today. Works well with this high backed seats we got in semis these days, and I keep my mule kick around for more inclimate weather...snow rain, etc. I know, I'm odd. Funny Video!
    Btw in Victorian Times, you never told a woman that she spotted her skirt (you know, her period). Instead you told her 'Pardon me ma'am, but that horse you're riding has a leaky saddle.

    There used to be a Stetson factory outlet store in Danbury Connecticut. I bought a fedora there and paid by cheque. As you probably know the Derby, or Bowler hat, originated as the head wear for the bailiff's who were local police for large British country estates in the 19th century. The were worn to protected the head while riding in case they had a collision with tree branches while on the look out for poachers.

    The Bowler (called a derby in the US) was the most popular cowboy hat in the old west. It had good utility for work, and looked good when dressed up in town. Hat kept out the rain and sun, and kept in the body heat.

    Note the NUTRIA fur....they were imported to WA and OR, as beaver pelts became more scarce. interesting fact: the nutria is a FISH....by Papal decree. The natives of South America were totally dependent upon the nutria for food, but the Pope said they must eat fish on Friday. That caused an uproar, so the Pope declared the nutria to be a fish....problem solved. Next time you’re out eating salmon, say: “I don’t know...Mine tastes like nutria.”

    Hi Santee, I normally keep my Stetson in its box but can I hang it from elk antlers? The only thing that’s stopping me is the fear that I’ll misshape or damage my hat. Any help would be appreciated

    • @ArizonaGhostriders

      It may alter the shape slightly, but usually not too bad. you could put a hat stretcher in the crown to keep the shape.

    What were the most common hat creases in the southwest?

    • @ArizonaGhostriders
      @ArizonaGhostriders  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Austin, many photos depict an open or flat crown (like in the movie Tombstone). Not to say there weren't creases, because you do see them. A lot of them seem to have no common shape. Just sorta random dents in the hat.

    Everyone likes to mention that the Stetson "Boss of the Plains" was made from beaver fur. In reality it was made from Nutria, which, if you have ever seen one, bears no resemblance to a beaver. It's a type of giant water rat. So essentially, as good as an original Stetson is, it's still made from rat fur. Just a thought.

    • @ArizonaGhostriders
      @ArizonaGhostriders  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, it wasn't until 1900 that they started using Nutria. So, the originals, from what I can tell, are beaver.
