To give a different answer to the guy's question; yes you can be aware in your sleep. At least, you can be aware that you are dreaming. This is called 'lucid dreaming'.
I've always found it fascinating, but whatever I tried to lucid dream, it never worked.. Then all of a sudden, after I had completely stopped trying, I started lucid dreaming this year. It is so much fun! You can actually feel and taste (at least it feels like it), and you can somewhat control where you go. I've had dreams where I walked around my old school, where I could fly, where I could run around in the grass on a summer day. They can get a little crazy though. I've heard it can lead to sleep paralysis as well, so be careful.
Also you're brain is not sleeping (as much) when you do this, so you will feel more tired in the morning.

The first part of the young man´s question, reminds me of, the Zhuangzi (Chuang-tzu) Taoist parable of the Butterfly Dream.
Chuang Tzu was a taoist/philosopher in ancient China, who, one night went to sleep and dreamed that he was a butterfly. He dreamt that he was flying around from flower to flower and while he was dreaming he felt free, blown about by the breeze hither and thither. He was quite sure that he was a butterfly. But when he awoke he realised that he had just been dreaming, and that he was really Chuang Tzu dreaming he was a butterfly. But then Chuang Tzu asked himself the following question: "was I Chuang Tzu dreaming I was a butterfly or am I now really a butterfly dreaming that I am Chuang Tzu?"
And the other part (the last part) of the young man´s question sounds like a question that would have been best answered/explained within Lucid dreaming terminology.
Even though that Sadhguru in a way answers the question, by saying that "we are ALWAYS aware". I do wish that he would have addressed the question in a more... in a more thourough/philosophic manner, than in his usual jovial manner. Don´t get me wrong i love Sadhguru´s jovial manner, but sometimes (i feel) it comes off in a manner that seems either "not serious" or not specific/knowledgable enough to the asked topic. (Almost as if he don´t believe, that "common" people isn´t aware enough to grasp the question/answer), and perhaps therefore answers in a more "easy"/non-specific way.
And, yes. People can of course search other sources for their questions than from Sadhguru himself, if they want those kind of answers. And, no. I am thereby not suggesting that Sadhguru isnt philosophical, or isnt serious or anything like that, because he certainly is.
It can be said, that the young man´s question, is not only about awareness, but that it actually touches upon existense or the experience/sensation of reality itself (of what is real and what is not), and it can therefore be considered a deeply philosophical question about existence/reality.

    • @skytte71
      @skytte71 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

As a side-remark and to explain a little about my expression "common" people. I´ts not that i suspect Sadhguru for considering people as being "common" (as in more or less capable of grasping certain topics) And i dont know about this specific setting, inwhich he is talking to these people.
However i find it interesting or a little peculiar that he dwells so much on the matter/distinction between awareness and mental alertness. I know that he is just making an example of it, to give people an understanding to distinquize between the two, and it is indeed a fair distinction to make, in order to explain and answer the question, so that people may understand it more.
But personally i just thought, that he was lingering to much on the distinction and the meaning of alertness vs awareness. Because i would suspect that most people are capable of making that distinction themselves, although i could be wrong, and just be sitting here and projecting my own subjective beliefs onto Sadhguru and the audience. (And totally be over-using/repeating the word distinction, way to much). :P
It´s just that i know, that some people, sometimes explain things in what can be considered "too common terms", as in explaining things in a way, so everyone can understand it. Which definitely is alright to do, but i find that it is sometimes better to explain things, in a direct way accordingly to the topic at hand, without packing things into too easily understood terms. Because in doing so, you sometimes simplify things in a way, where certain chances/opportunities of insights may become lost (lost in translation). And, that it is sometimes better to explain the things, plainly (plainly according to, and given, the topic at hand). So that people can become more stimulated, intrigued and curious about the subject, making them, asking more in depth questions (insights that lead to new insights, and not just explanation that leads to new laughs).
Wauw, i´m totally over-explaining myself and analyzing way too much. Maybe i should just go to bed now, because its very late. But at least i have enjoyed myself. Thank you, to anybody who may have bothered themselves, to read through my whole comment. Goodnight

I do not know if I was sleeping or my eyes were closed for some time period. Truth is I do not know. I gained access to my dreams when I was young when " I made a dream explode that I didn't like".... from then on dreams have been wonderful as I can pick the outcome or change the narrative. Even with this I do not know what I am doing. 😊

Wake up inside a dream, compose yourself, sit and meditate inside. Most people miss the vast universes that we can consciously perceive within the layers of what happens when all shields drop down.

🙏🏻 For me a lot of people are in a waking Sleep. No kidding.
    A whole big lot.
In a matrix of waking sleep together. Keeping themselves there with vigor keeping every stone unturned, ushering the children with their example.
The dust of their promises collects around there feet where fewer and fewer break through. As they rise in size this dust becomes their quick sand until they share the same empty face. For me this is what I see. R. P.🙏🏻

When someone says, he's sleeping like a dead person and he can't remember nothing, that only means, that person can't remember his dreams.
every person has dreams, every night. When startet my lucid dreaming journey for a long time ago, I had the same problem, but there are also a simply technic, it's called affirmations; when you say "I remember my dreams" ,when you are in bed.
after a few days, or after one or two weeks, it will happen and you will know what your fream was, last night.
at the beginning short pictures of your dreams and then a better memory. it needs its time
This is btw a part of a lucid dreaming technic for beginners and also a big part of lucid dreaming.
to be aware in a dream - lucid dreaming- is an outstanding, wonderful experience.
