Gilels is brilliant in this renditions of the Brahms Piano Concerts. It counts among his best, they are legendary recordings. With the Moravec and Mata live recording of Concert nr 1, for me, they're the best there is, about these difficult Concerts. 🎶🎵🆗👍💙
I've heard this concerto a million times but this orchestra made it sound like so authentic and rich. Seldom do I compliment an accompaniment but if I were the soloist, I'd know that this orchestra knew its material, and even more than I do.
Mindblowing indeed. The power and incision of the BPO - just listen to the threatening opening timpani! - perfectly matched by the leonine playing of the Golden one. Incomparable.
Gilels I saw at his last Carnegie Hall performance and he played the Schumann Symphonic Etudes with such lyrical warmth just like with this Brahms Piano Concerto no1. You could listen to it all day and never tire of its wrathful expression.
I was told by a very close friend of Emil he was terrified before performing this Concerto in public!! He said Brahms' 1rst was - at least for him - the most difficult Piano Concerto to perform. Regards, Geert Dehoux, pianist.
This is the only interpretation near that of Glenn Gould which does justice to Brahms music. It is so differentiated in the dinamic, tempo, breathing in the phrasing, colours , light and shadow as no other interpretetion. Who has ears and heart for Bahms will agree, I hope. One can hear this eeexplicitely at about 11:35 and 13:15 on and the typical Brahms "Tango" at about 12:40 to 12:50 and about 14:00 and 15:00. Brahms is so explosive of love, tenderness, passion and hope like no other.
Will Denayer It is Eugen Jochum, conductor, with the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1972. The slower pace is characteristic of Jochum, but never as slow as Klemperer. Jochum is my favorite conductor. For over 40 years the Gilels/Jochum has been my absolute favorite. But, I recently heard on TH-cam the Helene Grimaud Brahms pc 1, which compares! I have never enjoyed watching the hands of a pianist more than this performance with Grimaud! Nothing histrionic at all, just perfection and beauty.
Emil gilels after 14.02 is class of his own secon to none. You can not compare gould brahms 1 to gilels in the same day.Others who gets same color to brahms 1 are lupu and rubinstein
Hmm...I heard him play this concerto live in New York several years ago and it was beyond horrendous. I was sitting quite close -- normally a plus, but it just made all the more painful his failure to play half the notes and his constant, limp blurring of Brahms' rich melodies. Gilels is great. The best recording - I have heard all of them - is Brendel, who captures the nuance in every line while delivering a performance that is fiery, dramatic, and utterly coherent from start to finish.
The best Brahms 1 concerto 1.Gilels 2.Malcuzynski 3.Radu Lupu 4.Rubinstein 5.Gelber 6.Katchen. All the others Zimerman Pollini Backhaus Serkin Arrau B.Douglas E.Ax Berman Solomon Fleisher Brendel Kissin. They play this Brahms 1 concerto an anti romantic fashion with a sticky a stiffy cold tone.
Radu Lupu playing Brahms 1 piano concerto with the most colorful piano sound. All the others like Gilels Gelber Malcuzynski Katchen are not as a relax players as Lupu.Lupu do not us a percussion force as these others
This is a work of such greatness but through a miserable 125 kbps youtube sound is impossible to appreciate. Get the CD and a decent stereo and you will notice the difference.
Compare from at least 19:25 with the following roumanian folkssong: Maria Tanase. Tulnicul The same poetry, same longing and the same modal harmonies. Brahms should have travelled also to Romania, not only to Italia.
Me Yankee from in the USA thinks best Brahms 2 is: 1- Richter 2- Sokolov 3-Serkin. Me no hear of Khatia B. Is that a man or woman ? Me never like Fleisher for anything.
You the yankees from in the USA thinks that an awful Serkin the best Mozart player. Also you the Yankees thinks that Fleisher the best in Brahms 1 and 2 concertos. The best Brahms 2 1.Richter 2.Khatia Buniatishvili 3.Grigory Sokolov
This is my favourite recording of any piano work. Ever.
Lovely concerto ,of course Gilels -great interpretation.❤

The sound is still beautiful, the orchestral detail vivid and every note Gilels played audible and exquisite.
Wow, absolutely stunning! This is as majestic and beautiful as it can get.

The noblest opening in classical music history!
+Ror shach It's great too, but in a more traditional and more subdued way?
+Ror shach I Think I understand you.
Indeed, I never understood how the first concerto was not a success from the beginning. This music you hear and immediately love it
Brahms brings out every emotion I have! Especially this concerto.
The sound is phenomenal! One of the best I've ever heard!
Mindblowing indeed. The power and incision of the BPO - just listen to the threatening opening timpani! - perfectly matched by the leonine playing of the Golden one. Incomparable.
So gorgeous performance !
GREAT GILELS !!!!
Thank you very much, dear Erich for uploading !
Thanks for posting this. This is my absolute favourite recording.
Einer der besten Einspielungen überhaupt...........
THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS MAGNIFICENT PERFORMANCE
probably the best .
Gilels I saw at his last Carnegie Hall performance and he played the Schumann Symphonic Etudes with such lyrical warmth just like with this Brahms Piano Concerto no1. You could listen to it all day and never tire of its wrathful expression.
interpretazione magistrale.....!
Such intensity and beauty..
GRAND Concerto
The best ever!
Absolutely.

What orchestra is this? It's superb.
if only we could hear Brahms himself perform this masterpiece !.... but nevertheless fun to hear all the different interpretations
genial
SUBLIME!!!
Wonderful!! I would love to know which orchestra this is.

@@davidgiles6800actually Jochum's Bruckner is not that slow. I hated Klemperer for his super slow Beethoven

I don't think comparing Gilels and Glenn Gould will do any good... Apples and Oranges.

He plays it too stoically and detached, without emotion.
Me Yankee from in the USA thinks best Brahms 2 is: 1- Richter 2- Sokolov 3-Serkin.
Me no hear of Khatia B. Is that a man or woman ? Me never like Fleisher for anything.
Khatia=kate=Katherine......female!
"Without emotion" ???!!
