- Queen Rearing - How to use the Miller Method
Breeding better bees starts with some simple queen rearing and the Miller method is one of the simplest methods you can use to produce a few queen cells for yourself and a few friends.
In our ongoing series about queen rearing we start with some simple queen rearing techniques and walk through the production and selection of queens with a view of producing ever better quality queens for our own apiaries and to supply to other local beekeepers.

A suggestion !! Drill holes in the top bar preferably the size of a bamboo Barbecue sqewer and push them to the bottom of frame, then put your strips on with the Sqewer in the middle of each strip, that will hold your was stripts secure for cutting!!!!

after trying several different methods I'm going to stick with grafting and the Nicot system, much more productive for my needs but thanks for the suggestion.

Stuart rather than chop up a brood frame I would put a super in the brood box so the bees can extend the wax below the frame and then chop that section.

NEVER...NEVER...NEVER SHAKE A FRAME CONTAINING FRAGILE EGGS. MANY WILL BE DESTROYED AND YOU NEVER KNOW HOW MANY POTENTIAL QUEENS WILL ALSO BE DESTROYED IN THE PROCESS. JUST LEAVE THE BEES ON THAT FRAME, BUT MAKE CERTAIN THAT YOUR QUEEN IS NOT ON THE FRAME WHEN YOU PLACE IT IN THE CELL BUILDER BOX.

Thanks for commenting. I have always shaken bees off frames for various reasons and have never really encountered any viability issues with damaged eggs. , I've never really had a problem with shaking the bees of gently from a miller frame and it doesn't seem to do any harm to the eggs and larvae. Leaving the bees on it makes it difficult to cut out so I guess a good middle ground would be brushing the bees off to allow access to the frame to cut out. I guess we all have our own way of doing things in beekeeping that suits us.

the frame that you cut strips of plastic ,to get it drawn out did that hive that you put it in have a queen ?
Can this whole queen rearing operation be accomplished within just one colony?
Hi Joseph,
Yes, it is possible to raise queens using one colony by using a Demaree board or split board. It's easiest to wait until there are queen cells being created by the colony and then use the split board to divide. Check out my videos for a clearer description/demonstration.

Can I ask why you always were a bee suit ?
I got stunglast week but it was my own fault but last year I didn't get stung once
my freindy also were bee suits and are always geting stung but they don't sting me

Try it with out your bee suit you will see that you have a different konection to your bees

That sounds amazing. Unfortunately in the area that I live too many beekeepers have imported and crossed bees so we get some really stingy bees in amongst the nice ones. Today was a particularly difficult day!

how do you remove or work out from the centre old brood comb for removal, as old brood is suppose to removed after 2 yrs. like to see how you do this. not see any vids on this subject?.

How long a queen bee for mating flight ???
2 days to 2 weeks weather dependent. Shit weather takes longer and if a new queen isn't mated and laying after 3 weeks she becomes wasted.
How to use the Miller Method and at the end he states he should have done it differently. I've seen that with so many different bee video's on YT. I don't get it.

Thanks for commenting. Are you referring to the wax foundation that I put in where the bees joined it all together?
If so the reason I explain a different route is that the bees take varying amounts of time to draw comb and this colony happens to have drawn it very quickly. If I were to do it again then I would use maybe two fewer strips of foundation but it is a case of trial and error and there is no damage done as in the next video I show how the Miller method is used to make the cut outs.
I hope that explains my approach.
