lol for future reference taylor: mystery snails = babies when it comes to any sort of tank treatment. they are sooooo fragile... ramshorns = would survive the apocalypse. I've never had any sort of chemical affect them in any way. even super bad water conditions... they manage to survive. unless you're pouring in salt, they'll most likely be fine..and honestly.. they'd probably survive salt too.

From what I know about algae in general, it’s ability to reproduce is unparalleled. Spores, or tiny new algae babies produced from cellular division can actually get stuck in your filter, and eventually release more spores/cells back into the tank. So even if you get it all out, the filter can be a breeding ground, so to speak. This is a hypothesis based off my own experience green spot algae. What I’ve ended up doing is turning off the filter, then scraping the algae, then a big water change to suck up the algae, then replace the filter cartridge. Carbon in filters naturally disrupts the algae reproduction, but if there’s too much bio-load, those little spores/cells can slip through. If you are able to rinse your filter media with that api stuff it might help clean the filter too!

Totally get that frustration...... I will say, I've had perennial algae wars in several of my tanks, including ones full of algae-eating critters like shrimp and snails, but I do have several tanks that have *never* had algae problems--my blackwater tanks. They're not even fancy blackwater with super acidic water; I just drop in some rooibos tea after water changes. Limits the plants I can grow in them, of course, but the fish don't mind (and surprisingly, neither do the shrimp or snails), and I never have to deal with algae removal :D

I will admit to using algae fix. My well water is extremely mineralized and hair algae absolutely loves it. I don’t treat constantly, only when I have outbreaks that are just overwhelming my plants. It does not seem to have ever bothered my MTS or Nerites, nor does it bother any of my fish or plants. I dose until it looks all melty then remove what I can, the continue on a maintenance dose for a couple weeks. All in all I dose for 5-6 weeks total maybe three times a year in my established tanks.

People tend to add too much stuff to their tanks in general. Stop doing what you're doing until your plants genuinely start to suffer (bring light way down, stop fertilizing, consider feeding less fishfood (overfeeding tends to be very common)) Then start increasing these things one at a time till you find out what you need and don't need to improve the health of the plants, and do no more than that.

For my tanks inside the best "algae fix" is an Siamese algae eater for me. Hair, black beard you name it. Not sure if you would be able to put one in with your grow out tanks but maybe a couple little tiny ones? and then move it after it gets to big? Seriously they're like goats for aquarium. Oof looks like you're dealing with cladaphora. That stuff is tough. Algavores don't eat it, and it thrives when plants do. It's a very tough algae to eradicate, especially since it breaks so easily at its brachiation points. What can be reassuring though, is that it's not symptomatic of a balancing issue, but rather a contamination one (came in on a plant, etc)

The biggest success for me was turn the blue LED's almost completely off in my lighting schedule. One issue with a DIY CO2 system is that the CO2 runs at night unless you don't have a way to turn it off at night. There should not be any CO2 release in the night/dark photoperiod. Just my 2c. YMMV.

My hair algae pearls! It's covered in and releases tiny bubbles wherever it's growing: leaves, walls, filter, substrate. Adding more plants has just given the hair algae more surfaces to anchor to. Lights have always been on a timer. I've adjusted every variable I know of. In the end, the only thing that worked for me was sadly shutting down the affected tanks (3 so far). And then, I have 2 bulletproof tanks. Go figure.

Trashed everything at least four times and started from scratch
Added silver flying fox fish (they actually worked until they grew up to be sharks)
    Added amano shrimp (tasty morsels)
Used Algaefix, but it really doesn't work
Right now, said vicious tank houses my HMPK youngsters and seems to be "okay". Still have hair algae, but it can't compete with the huge amount of plants in it. I cleaned out several other tanks and threw all the living plants in there and that seems to have helped.

You should try peroxide, the algae will just turn white and die off, though I would go for the Amana shrimp if you have some. And every tank should have 10 ottocinclus. Lol

Hello fellow Taylor, thank you for another very informative video. I’ve always had a huge algae issue so I’m kind of sad I can’t use that product with my shrimp. Right now though I have an issue with my betta water being cloudy. Is there anything I can do to clear it up? I have shrimp and a betta in there and some live plants.

I have a tank full of crypts, one of which has extreme sentimental value (as a fellow crypt fan, I imagine you can understand a plant having sentimental value?)... which is also full of hair algae. My main concern with a product like this is crypt melt. I had melt in a different tank from using PraziPro, which is one of the safest meds there is! So...how is the lovely crypt I know you have in that 20g? Did the algaecide affect it?

cladophora is a nightmare. i once had it for years then one day i decide to nuke the tank with hydrogen peroxide. everything died including the algae. i start a new. everything from previous tank i boil it to kill the algae. had a clear tank for more than a year, then suddenly last week it reappears. = =

I just read reviews on this... I hope your fish live.... All the comments says it killed all their little fish (guppies, tetras )

Instead of $11 for Algae Fix try $0.99 for a bottle of hydrogen peroxide.
    Dose 1.5ml per gallon.
    Leave for 20 minutes.
    Do 50% water change
Repeat entire process within 2-3 days.
Snails and shrimp (just like Algae Fix) should be removed, if possible.

The only time I wanted any type of algae was when I setup my mbuna tank. I placed the tank in direct sunlight beside the backyard floor to ceiling glass doors. I have two lights (stock light and fluval 2.0) on the 75 gallon tank for 13 +12 hrs. Barely any algae. The rocks have patches of purple but that's from the bristle nose scraping it off. All my other tanks have algae until introduced shrimps to the tanks that can house them. So if you pretend you want algae, you won't get it.. 😂

looks to me that the tank need more plants which may be difficult due to the gold fish. Co2 isnt a magical algae fix have 4 tanks of which 2 have homemade co2 (same as yours except i insist upon a gas separator so that alcohol never enters my aquariums) they all have hair algae except for my shrimp pond. If something is out of balance you will get algae and co2 can make the algae grow faster. as such i have given up on getting rid of it entirely as its easier to manage a little hair algae on wood and hardscape then it is fighting it off just for it to reappear on a plant where i definitly dont want it

I have been trying to grow hair algae on my driftwood in my arowana tank. I started with 2-3 small patches of hair algae on the wood. 6 months later, they are just a little bit hairier. I noticed that they grow very slightly faster without lighting and lighting cause more brown algae than helping them to grow. Is there any tips to how I can grow hair algae quicker?
