grass doesn't grow in winter, so the cows are brought in to the shed and fed hay and silage until spring when the grass begins to grow again. Also if the cows were left outside they would rip up the field and then the grass wouldn't grow till very late in the spring. Would love to keep cows out all year as it would be a lot cheaper than building sheds .
