Ragnar Lothbrok everyone is so sensitive about their favorite breeds! It’s just an opinion! Oh well more feedback is better especially on TH-cam. 🐶
Great P are top homestead dogs hands down. They thrive down here in texas where I stay, but with their coats and genetics they can survive HARSH cold temperatures outdoors
Yo, I know this video is old, but if you're considering Fila Brasileiro as your dog, please train and socialize them as hell , I've seem very experienced owners here in Brazil that, even with socializing, have reported them attacking visitors and sometimes family that don't usually visit, please be sure you can handle the breed! They are AMAZING dogs, but, just like malinois, for exemple, they are not for everyone!!
I've had German Shepherds Rottweilers and Dobermans and pit bulls but I will not have a Boerboel I absolutely love the breed but that is one serious dog! but if I had more property no doubt it would be my number one dog to have.!!...

There is a story* about a dog named Mochioco ( not sure of spelling), a Dogo Argentino who protected his two girls from a mountain cat. Mountain Cat got dead; Machocco(?, i dunno, i took another stab at spelling it), lost an eye, but his girls were safe! *On TH-cam.
I KNEW IT ! I KNEW IT !! I Knew IT !!! . I’ve been saying for years that the Rottweiler must have been derived from the Black and Tan Tibetan Mastiff. All your videos are deliberately very carefully thoughtful and honest as possible . Even when you’re bias you state it ! Please keep bringing the real 👍🏽👍🏽
Very very interesting and important little detail bonus you gave us with the blood test that shows the dogs descended from the great Tibetan Mastiff! Much appreciated!
Bouvier Des Flanders. Bred as a farm dog. Smart, dog friendly, 100 lbs, don’t shed, loves kids, and when they need to step up they will without the killer instinct that many of the dogs you have on this list have, which will get you sued. Bouviers often overlooked. I like that don’t want them to get popular with stupid owners
One thing I’d like to add to your video is the great pyrenees is that they have a dbl coat and shouldn’t be shaved as it will never come back the way it was originally. Awesome video.
Agree with your top pick; I'd point out that Ridgebacks, descended from largely the same stock as Boerboels, might belong on this list as well. They're fearless in the face of threats. They are bred to be larger than in the past, because they aren't used to bay big-game much anymore. All that said, they do have a downside, huge prey drive.
I used to have a Akita. From the first time the dog saw he, he bonded with me and me only. No one else could touch him, not even my husband.. Even as a 10 year old puppy, he wouldn't let anybody touch him. He would grow. No one could come to close to me without him growling and or bitting. It was not good. He attacked my husband three times. When I had him neutered, the vet tech couldn't get him out of the cage. I had to go back there and get him out. He was all tails wags when he saw me. We have a house on 1 acre, fully fenced. At the end of our lot, my Akita would viciously bark at the kids waiting for the school bus. It was just a matter of time before he attacked a person and I would held liable. So I had to do what I had to do. It was really sad. But I still like the breed. That my dog was just "One of those dogs"
@@monkeysign123 Thank you for your story and I'm sorry to hear how it ended. I feel a lot of people who get an Akita dont understand how intense they can be if not socialized very early which is why it would be good for Zeke to do a video on it. 👍
I am very happy with your picks, my picks still would of had a bullmastiff wich was breed for protecting the farm and catching the poachers they had to take down the dog and the man with a gun but love that you re picked number one as the boerboel love the vid..!!!
@@truthdefrag i know but it has multiple beeds in its bloodline its a type of mastiff, which most breeds do have multiple, and i love boerboels there great protectors and a great breed.
Most mastin breeds come from the tibetan mastin and are actually very similar one to the other (anatolian is very similar to kangal, which is very similar to caucasian and central asia mastin, and those are sometimes mistaken for tibetan mastin) Same applies for shepherd (german, dutch, belgian malinois, collie, border collie, australian shepherd , etc). Same with dogos and prey dogs like presa canario, great dane, dogo argentino, cane corso, etc (cane corso is actually in between a prey dogo and a mastiff breed). Be guided by generalities and then go for speciphics on the breed and then for the speciphic traits of each individual dog.
Well done, as usual. 👏 I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. This is the BEST channel for dog breed info on YT. 🙌 Keep doing what you do, man. You can’t please everyone all the time, it just means your audience is expanding. 😉
From the research I have done, many people with large property and flocks to guard will have a more velcro Livestock Guardian breed for up close and they will have Anatolians or Kangals for the outer range of the flock; they will go seek out high places and watch, and range the outer reaches of your flock and your property. They were range more in the daytime and this action will keep animals away, your ranging Guardians following scents wherever they may go and taking care of business if they come upon something that needs taken care of. It is very strategic to do this, because wolves can be very tricky - they will send a female in heat to guide your dog away and if the Anatolian or Kangal goes after it, whether a female chasing it off or a male looking to mate, there needs to be other dogs, yes plural, in close, that stay with the herd/flock to protect it from the wolves that will come in force as a pack as soon as that Anatolian or Kangal is gone. Now, as to the Pyrenees, they seem to be able to work out the twist themselves to work certain areas and if you have enough dogs of this breed on your property they will pair up and patrol during the day, ranging about to keep the critters away. And in case you did not know this about the Pyrenees they are like the Tibetan Mastiff, they are nocturnal. Yes, that means they are awake at night and may like to sound off to let you know, just like the old town criers once did... "It's 9, (10, and 11, and 12...) o'clock, and alll isss we-elll !"
Fila de são Miguel...one of the best i have everseen...i have dogo, cane corso and another one without a big breed....and y deal closely with german sheplardes and mastiffs.....but the fila de sao miguel is top the too ....very nice
First of all, as always great video. You could make a TOP 10 DOG BREEDS FOR HOMESTEAD PROTECTION video that went unnoticed. That is, breeds that people who are not aware of dogs are generally not afraid.
I've seen a lot of comments about people wanting boerboels(on other videos too). I'm not against you getting a Boerboel but you must know what you're doing, these dogs are not for first time owners and if not raised right you're gonna have a big problem on your hands. They need A LOT of socialization and they are very dominant and territorial so they don't do good with dogs they were not raised with and other dominant breeds. They are naturally protective, so even if they are socialized you must watch them around people they don't know
I think Great pyrenees would be perfect and more available than the other top 5. But they don't intimidating enough. Which other dog from this list can they be paired off. I'm thinking 1 male Pyrenees and 2 other females. Your opinion??
I just started the video, and fully expected the Great Pyrenees to be in the top 3. The quintessential livestock guardians, suited to all kinds of weather conditions, have some natural herding instinct, don't suffer the same wanderlust as things like Huskies, the list goes on. Disappointing that they aren't recognized, I'd be curious to know what his reasoning is. Edit: My bad; I see them at number 5. Not high enough, in my opinion, but at least they're on the list.
1:54 One theory is that the breed is a combination between the English Mastiff, Bloodhound and old Bulldog of the 15th century.[4][unreliable source?] Another theory is that the Fila is the result of the crossbreeding between Portuguese and Spanish dogs brought to Brazil during the Iberian Union period.[5][unreliable source?] In this case, the Fila would have as possible ascendents the Spanish Mastiff, Cão de Castro Laboreiro, Cão de Gado Transmontano, Rafeiro do Alentejo, Cão Fila de São Miguel, etc., or the predecessor of these breeds (the Iberian Alaunt), possibly combined with scent hounds.[en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fila_Brasileiro#History] Original Fila Brasileiro (OFB) or Old Brazilian Mastiff is a rare working farm dog breed from Brazil.[1] The remaining Old Fila dogs preserved on farms in the interiors of Brazil are being gathered to become a formalized breed.[2] The Original Fila Brasileiro is recognized by the SOBRACI in Brazil, and despite the similar name, it is a breed apart from the modern Fila Brasileiro.[3] The morphology of the old dogs contradicts a long-standing widespread theory about the genetic pool of the authentic Fila Brasileiro, which suggests it descended from English dog breeds (English Mastiff, Bloodhound, and Old English Bulldog). Borges says that this belief encouraged the crossbreeding with these foreign breeds, which lessened the essential physical and psychological characteristics of the original Fila dog. Borges declared that the authentic Fila Brasileiro dog is of purely Iberian origin, in particular, related to the Portuguese Alaunt dog, or the Iberian Alaunt dog.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_Fila_Brasileiro#History

My DOGO ARGENTINO is a fierce protector, she does not accept any strange people or animals without introduction. After she knows the belong she is a Momma to everything on my property, she is great with chickens, ducks, pigs, goats. She takes care of and protects everything that is appart of HER pack. Dogo Argentino is a great choice for homestead/farm. Don’t get turned off by the prey drive, the intelligence is so high that they will be able to live amongst anything that is in THEIR pack.
Awesome selection of dog breeds for this video! Hats off to you! From my research and actual observation of several dog breeds, I suggest that if you are living in an area where large carnivores have recently entered, such as California, where cougars and wolves have made inroads, do consider having any of the livestock guardian dog (LGD) breeds as protection. LGDs are passively aggressive, will not actively engage in a combat, but will deter a carnivore from becoming a threat. However, if you are living in a homestead where bad people are a problem, do consider one of the non-LGD breeds well covered here. I apologize if this post causes any inconvenience. Please let me know and I will delete it.
Having just lost my dog I’m preparing for my future after I get a homestead or travel nomadic for a while, though this will be without my Chloe. I’ve always favored breeds bred to protect and I have an appreciation for the Cane Corso and the Dogo Argentino, as the area I plan to relocate to does have a boar problem. I loved the Fila but with my limited time experience I know I can’t handle one. But the breeds I’m considering are the American Bulldog, Cane Corso, Dogo Argentino, the Kangal and the Boerboel. I just don’t know who I want to select, maybe some of each as they’ll all have plenty of room and stimulation and for the Kangal they’ll be occupied.
What did you get?.. For a homestead or farm with lots of land w/boar, the Cane Corso is great and is very trainable and personal protector. The Dogo, Presa, Kengal/Anatolian, Boerbol are good too for that situation.
The tibetan mastiff in the U.S.A. had a VERY LIMITED GENE POOL. The AUSABLES LINE HAS CENTRAL ASIAN SHEPHERD. AND THE CHINESE LINE IS A LARGE MIX. SO THE TIBETAN MASTIFF IS A MIX BREED, And yes The one in the video is a DRAKYI T.M. LINE.
Could you please do a video of Carolina Dogs? Otherwise known as Pariah dogs or American dingo or Dixie dingo or yeller dog or a yellow dog. They're the America's only wild dog bread and they're like no other dog I've had! This is the breed used in the movie "Old Yeller", hence the nick name. It's a shame they're not as popular, because they are great dogs! Unlike Australia'd Dingos, the Carolina Dog I'd domesticated, for the most part. Thanks for all your videos. We lost my Amstaff Reno about two years ago and it broke our hearts. We went to the pound are found our CD Odie. Thanks for reading this. You Rock!
For my situation with cold continental winters my top 5 would be: 1. Alabai - central Asian shepherd 2. Kangal 3. Sharplaninac 4. German shepherd 5. Great Pyrenees
Hey Deke, try this, it's easier ...(bra•sill•YAIR•roe) / (bra•sill•yeh'•roh) / (bra•sill•yeah'•rho)... one less syllable and it sounds very close to the Spanish way. Though I have spell the pronunciation different ways as I don't know what system you are used to but I've tried to write them in the ways of common and familiar words. Each of the spellings and marks of these pronunciations sound exactly the same, with bra as a minor accented syllable and sill barely there at all, yeah has the strongest pronunciation and roe is almost as inconsequential as sill and definitely less so than bra, so that it might be spelled " feel-a-bra-ssəl-yerroh"
Man my 1 year old workingline german shepherd just died. Blue green algae . He was trained on sleeve and next phase would have been bite suit. He was smart, loyal and biddable. He would sleep at my feet and follow me all day long
Can you imagine if somebody did a really good comparison documentary where these breeds were put to the test in head to head competition ? That would probably get millions of views for a long time to come. Pulling tests, biting tests, willingness to engage both human and animal intruders, willingness to co-exist with people and livestock, survival in the widest range of climates and conditions, grooming and cleaning requirements, loud or quiet, speed, efficiency as an expense , overall health profile, intelligence, trainability and hunting and retrieving specialties could be some categories. There is no one dog breed that would finish first in all those categories of course but it would give an indication of good choices for somebody's specific requirements.
I prefer an Alapaha BlueBlood, the are sweet as hell and turn into a different dog if a stranger rolls into their territory. Mine instinctively corners animal or intruder and alerts me.
Neutral on a few on your list. I think this should be separated in two or three categories: Rural Home Guardian Dog, Barnyard (Structures) Guardian Dog, and Livestock Guardian Dog. I like the Cane Corso and Boerboel however they are more of either a Barnyard (Structures) Guardian Dog and Rural Home Guardian Dog, the Boerboel is a velcro type dog. Kangals and Maremmas may be considered second to none, with different types of Livestock, as Livestock Guardian Dogs. I've been associated with German Shepherds and Doberman Pinschers and prefer the Dobe by far... they are great with livestock too.
As a Young dude who wants to get a homestead farm property in the near future, I appreciate this list a lot

They are all absolutely amazing but the most human aggressive are definitely the Fila's although they are very loving with their owners
Yeah, image my dog food bill lol I have a some what large parcel of land to guard against many thieves and I also breed
American Bullys hoid fun..my fobie girly loves em only plsys with the biv hsndsome boys..she plays rough huge chest..shoulders n sss like a wrecking ball decks me in play often..Im 60 soon..ha ha but mum hsd a rottie till she was 80..its in the bloodlines in our family..never trust anyone scared of dogs ..🥳🥳🥳🥳😊
Great video, you have great insight into protection dogs, especially the bully breeds. Keep up the great work.
Bully breeds are terrible protection dogs. An 75lb shepherd will out work any bully
I was wondering how Boerboel wasn't on the list. Boerboel, Rottweiler, Alsatian are my personal top three.
I am new to your channel. I just wanted to tell you how much I have been enjoying the videos you are making. The dogs are amazing and the descriptions are very detailed. Thank you for sharing them. Ms Michal 🙃☕💖
*Nowadays Zeek’s facing alot of useless criticism ... but i get the viewers too! It’s just their opinion*
Ragnar Lothbrok everyone is so sensitive about their favorite breeds! It’s just an opinion! And I’m saying that as a Boerboel owner who got my dog after first hearing about the breed on Zekes channel!! But Zeke is still the best dog channel on YT especially for bully breeds. Oh well more feedback is better especially on TH-cam. 🐶
German shepherd is farm dog 🤪
Adnan their called keyboard experts.🙄
Another fantastic video! Thank you!
Fuller Boerboels was the featured dog. Beautiful.
Great P are top homestead dogs hands down. They thrive down here in texas where I stay, but with their coats and genetics they can survive HARSH cold temperatures outdoors
Calling it now. BOERBOEL
Rottweiler is another I wish we could do a top 15 or 20. I don't mind longer videos.
Great fix, completely got it right now! :oD Keep up the great content Zeke!
Socializing them from puppies is key in having the best dog ever!
Great Dogumentary
Thanks for the updated list.
I've had German Shepherds Rottweilers and Dobermans and pit bulls but I will not have a Boerboel I absolutely love the breed but that is one serious dog! but if I had more property no doubt it would be my number one dog to have.!!...
why you like the Boerboel?
Zeke love the updated video. Stay true keep up the great videos. Poeple of You Tube love them.
That german shepherd you showed herding the flock is the real stuff... Which we see often in our childhood... Not the show types seen today.
Nothing like seeing an actual REAL functional German Shepherd, the intelligence and elegance is unmatched. Shame what they are doing to the breed.
I have presa canario 5 months old and he is a giant; he eat everything ;)
Zeke you did an awesome job on making this video I like your first edition of it just as much I was shocked like a lot of your other viewers that the Boerboel wasn't on there good edit but instead of editing I think you should have done an expansion version cuz 10 dogs of this category is a tough one to narrow down but I think you did an excellent job please keep up the good work you're kicking ass with the dogumentary TV I always enjoy watching your videos! 👍👍
Totally happy with the TM as a house protector! Love the variety of dogs and explanation for the placements.
German Shepherd and Doberman is My Favourite Dog
I like these videos. Keep them coming,
Love big dogs but I can't afford to feed them so I got a border collie she eats very little but she does job she's awesome love dogs
Could you make another video on the American Akita and tips for socializing a dominant breed? Thanks 👍👍
Akita's are dogs that will not protect you and have no intimidating factor. To weak also. No one wants a video ont hem
@@ThePyrazHD my akita will protect me so that's false
@@ThePyrazHD You no nothing!
Just an excellent channel. Very knowledgable Sir :-)
nice video,in my opinion presa and kangal are the best
Thanks for the info! I'm surprised you didn't include at least one small breed.
My fate in Zeke is restored!! ;-)
No seriously, another great list for what the title says.
I am very happy with your picks, my picks still would of had a bullmastiff wich was breed for protecting the farm and catching the poachers they had to take down the dog and the man with a gun but love that you re picked number one as the boerboel love the vid..!!!
Boerboel comes from the Bullmastiff
@@truthdefrag i know but it has multiple beeds in its bloodline its a type of mastiff, which most breeds do have multiple, and i love boerboels there great protectors and a great breed.
Great video and great choices 👍
Agree with this 100%
Most mastin breeds come from the tibetan mastin and are actually very similar one to the other (anatolian is very similar to kangal, which is very similar to caucasian and central asia mastin, and those are sometimes mistaken for tibetan mastin)
Same applies for shepherd (german, dutch, belgian malinois, collie, border collie, australian shepherd , etc).
Same with dogos and prey dogs like presa canario, great dane, dogo argentino, cane corso, etc (cane corso is actually in between a prey dogo and a mastiff breed).
Be guided by generalities and then go for speciphics on the breed and then for the speciphic traits of each individual dog.
Makes sense to update your list
Well done, as usual. 👏 I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. This is the BEST channel for dog breed info on YT. 🙌 Keep doing what you do, man. You can’t please everyone all the time, it just means your audience is expanding. 😉
Great selection!
A white coat can help differentiate your LSG dog from a predator....which is useful if the owner is going to neutralize the predator.
Fila de são Miguel...one of the best i have everseen...i have dogo, cane corso and another one without a big breed....and y deal closely with german sheplardes and mastiffs.....but the fila de sao miguel is top the too ....very nice
great page and videos brother, thank you. Rottie owner...
Great list, the only change I would have made was adding the Leonberger.
make sue,WTH,this, list, is,where, are, the,Dobermans? Thank you for the video
Still a great list. Thank you so much for your hard work.
Love the Englush Mastiff my grandad used to breed em..not very fast.. but wow..amazing dogs..
glad you're in inches and pounds no conversion needed .
First of all, as always great video.
You could make a TOP 10 DOG BREEDS FOR HOMESTEAD PROTECTION video that went unnoticed.
That is, breeds that people who are not aware of dogs are generally not afraid.
Thank you this is super helpful!
Thanks for the list - now I’ve got some research to do... 🤓
i wish i can get one boerboel😥 thanks for the video
They are amazing dogs. I have a 5 month old male and will definitely get another in the future.
They are naturally protective, so even if they are socialized you must watch them around people they don't know
Thank you brother
1:54 One theory is that the breed is a combination between the English Mastiff, Bloodhound and old Bulldog of the 15th century.[4][unreliable source?] Another theory is that the Fila is the result of the crossbreeding between Portuguese and Spanish dogs brought to Brazil during the Iberian Union period.[5][unreliable source?] In this case, the Fila would have as possible ascendents the Spanish Mastiff, Cão de Castro Laboreiro, Cão de Gado Transmontano, Rafeiro do Alentejo, Cão Fila de São Miguel, etc., or the predecessor of these breeds (the Iberian Alaunt), possibly combined with scent hounds.[en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fila_Brasileiro#History]
Original Fila Brasileiro (OFB) or Old Brazilian Mastiff is a rare working farm dog breed from Brazil.[1] The remaining Old Fila dogs preserved on farms in the interiors of Brazil are being gathered to become a formalized breed.[2] The Original Fila Brasileiro is recognized by the SOBRACI in Brazil, and despite the similar name, it is a breed apart from the modern Fila Brasileiro.[3]
The morphology of the old dogs contradicts a long-standing widespread theory about the genetic pool of the authentic Fila Brasileiro, which suggests it descended from English dog breeds (English Mastiff, Bloodhound, and Old English Bulldog).
I like the idea of the Dogo thanks bro. Looking for something to mix with a chill cold weather dog like husky of course GSD too.but have it outside and friendly with who I have but keep unwanted out. Thanks man
Do any of these dog pose a problem for first time dog owners on a home stead ? Such as little kids ? Or turning ?
I would really appreciate if we can have a videos on golden retrieve plz
Great video!
I was surprised Rottweiler wasn't on your list. Love the channel.
Hes a cattle dog
Rottweiler’s are more a farm herding breed not particularly a protection breed. Plus their not a very intelligent breed so make poor protection dogs.
@@matty6848 what are talking about? Your the first person I have encountered that thinks that
My Top 10 are. 1: Kangal/Anatolian Shepherd 2: Central Asian Shepherd 3: Irish Wolfhound 4: Maremme Sheep dog 5: Great Pyrenees 6: Dogo Argentino 7: Rottweiler 8: German Shepherd 9: Caucasian Shepherd 10: Great Swiss Mountain dog ✌🏽♥️
I woud love to heare your appinion on the alarm dogs aka the yappy ones...(shih tzu..
I always enjoy your lists, but I wonder why the Spanish Mastiff is often disregarded on these kinds of rankings.
The Dogo, Presa, Kengal/Anatolian, Boerbol are good too for that situation.
so this list was edited just to include the boerboel and not just imclude it but have it at number 1??? i couldnt agree more!!!
The tibetan mastiff in the U.S.A.
had a VERY LIMITED GENE POOL.
The AUSABLES LINE HAS
CENTRAL ASIAN SHEPHERD.
AND THE CHINESE LINE IS A LARGE MIX.
SO THE TIBETAN MASTIFF IS A MIX BREED,
And yes The one in the video is a DRAKYI T.M. LINE.
Love this 💙❤️💙
Could you please do a video of Carolina Dogs? You Rock!
All nation have their pariah dog
Old yeller was a black mouth cur.
@@Mahishya007 you're absolutely right! But I'm only going off of current wild dogs native to the US.
@@mayqueen7525, thanks for letting me know. Most of the Carolina Dog websites stated that, so I actually believed it.
For my situation with cold continental winters my top 5 would be:
1. Alabai - central Asian shepherd
2. Kangal
3. Sharplaninac
4. German shepherd
5. Great Pyrenees
Great video 👍👌
I wonder how well the American Akita would do as a home protector - I’m guessing pretty good but would love to hear other opinions
Can you make top 10 most territorial dogs
Thank you for sharing
I would maybe add the Spanish Alamo
Good video
What about the Alabai. Central Asian Shepherd? Is an AMAZING DOG
I disagree with the GSD being high , but also amazing video :) I think the GSD and Cane Corso should switch , but amazing content 🙏🏼
And all is right with the world now. lol Great edit.
Fila Mastiff was used Original for Slave catch and sometimes Killing
Love my Presa!!!
