I can confirm that my local Target's self checkout doesn't like the $2 bill's coin counterpart: it rejected my half-dollar, even though the slot was big enough for it.
That's interesting - I never thought to use coins like half or silver dollars in those. Of course, this IS a $2 bill channel. But thanks for the info! I may just have to try that on my own time.
The store I frequent has two rows of self checkout machines One of them only lets you use cards and the other one does both cards and cash. The worst thing about that store it only accepts debit cards and EBT cards and gift cards. Because I don't like carrying around a debit card with me what I do is buy a gift card and then if I only grabbing a few items and I can't use the cash machines at the self checkout cuz they're all full I can still go over to the card machine and use the gift card. It's a little bit annoying but at least I'm not worried about losing my debit card.
Many decades ago, in my hometown, one of the major employers in town would pay their employees’ yearly bonuses in two dollar bills. So as the two dollar bills circulated through the community everyone could see the economic effect their bonuses had on the community.
I have heard this story before and I looked it up and it wasn't true but it's possible that the employer I was told about was not the one you are talking about. Could you say what is your hometown? Also it could be that it was just many decades ago... Do people pay their employees in cash these days?
You could be talking about Hornady. They make bullets for guns, and they are featured in my documentary film on this channel. It's true: they give out $100 in twos to each employee as part of their bonus. It's annual, and it's documented. Probably about 70-80 minutes into the film.
Thank you for the great videos! Does anyone know of a community or forum through which people discuss two dollar bills and a half dollars and dollar coins? Also it would be interesting to find out if there has been any consideration for additional types of unusual US currently such as maybe a five dollar coin.
On WheresGeorge.com, there is a full discussion forum on $2 bills. If you watch the full film on this channel, there's a segment on them toward the end. It's a tracking-$1-bill website, but the $2 has also taken off on it, to the point where the creator made a whole forum for people who love the $2 bill. There's even a list called Top Tom's (Google it) ranking who has posted the most $2 bills for tracking. The top two people were interviewed for the film and also appear in that segment.
I think the death of paper money will be one step closer to the death of freedom. Not that I use cash a lot nowadays, but some people like to keep Uncle Sam out of their pockets stealing what they worked hard to get.
We recently received some $20 bills from 1978 and 1983 and multiple self checkouts at various stores wouldn’t accept them and the young kids at the registers thought they were counterfeit.
I have used 2$ bills once in a grocery store .. worked Tried this week using one in a pa lottery machine at same store … rejected Buying scratch offs for the stockings … not a regular buyer

XD When I was 13 and getting school lunch I paid in 2$ bills (over ten years ago) they didn't call the cops they were like "You should like put that in a collection or something", they refused service when asking the second time, just decided not to eat lunch that day. Been a while but all NCR equipment should be programmed to accept $2 bills regardless of retailer. I kept a stack of em in my tool bag to test/troubleshoot with just in case the onboard cash was low.
Didn’t know ATM passed out 2 dollar bills. I knew they could put out the denomination you ask for but in my experience you have to have the bank manager order the bills and then call you. Thx
They don't pass them out. They accept them as deposits (most of the the time). Big difference! You want to get $2 bills, you definitely have to go inside the bank.
Depends on how thorough they were during set-up of the check-out machines. If they teach the machine to read the 2 dollar bills, like they do with other denominations, it'll read it just fine.
I've seen Walmart self-checkouts before that don't take cash as well. Also in a lot of self-checkout machines you can put multiple bills in at the same time, just like at an ATM.
I put two $2 bills into a Walmart machine at the same time the first time I filmed for this video; it accepted them as one bill. Had I not been crooked filming it, I probably would have included the shot here. But either way, I wasn't going to put multiple bills in the machine at the same time again. Thus, what you see here is me always putting in one bill at a time!
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary Oh wow! I remember a similar thing happening to you in the ATM video. I think I'll be very wary of using multiple bills in these machines from now on.
Exactly, yes! I didn't learn my lesson, I guess. Once the machine takes the first one, it's anticlimactic as to what will happen with the others, but at the same time, I'm not going to insert a cluster of $2s and lose them all because the machine thought it was one bill. The viewers just have to watch me do them one at a time in any and all future similar videos. :)
You don't have to put each bill in 1 at a time. You can put a whole stack of bills in the Walmart bill acceptor and it will pull each bill 1 at a time on its own automatically. It saves time. The Walmart self checkout also gives cash back if you use big bills. You won't get all change. I've gotten $97 back from a $100 bill after buying something worth $3 . 4 $20 bills, a $10 bill, a $5 bill and 2 $1 bills.
Surprised the Walmart you're at accepts cash still! In my area, self checkout is card only, and most human operated checkout lines are card-only too. I haven't really used cash outside of smaller concert venues in a decade, though with the surge of things like Venmo, that will likely fill the void like merch stands at small concert venues
I live in New jersey, and in 2019, it was ruled to be illegal for any brick and mortar business in the state to not accept cash, so this concept seems foreign to me lol. even before the ruling, there were very few places I'd ran across that didn't accept cash.
There are self pick-up shops in Taiwan for people who purchase goods from the web and get their stuff by paying on their own on a machine. Unfortunately that machine does not take 20 dollar NT coins or 200 dollar NT bills.
I work for Publix. They told all employees self check out and stop taking cash due to of breaking people not paying and we still take two dollar bills at a regular cashier.
I was disappointed to see that Publix's self-checkout machines don't take cash at all. I didn't think they'd accept twos, but I didnt expect them to take no cash ever.
I think I tried that once myself - I may have even filmed it but I haven't used it in a video yet. There are lots more machines I can make videos with; they work as short, themed videos instead of one long, drawn-out video where I hit every type of machine. More of these to come!
Most likely no. These machines give out coins most of the time, but in the few instances where cash is necessary, it's singles. Another denomination takes up more space and would have to be programmed, even though it's more practical.
I had no idea you could get $2 bills at a bank. I haven't come across one in the wild in forever. I thought they were essentially collector's items now.
I accepted the challenge on using $2.00 bills Today on Friday the 13th! 1st place was an automated car wash in Early, TX sadly the worn out mom and pop vending machine HAD rejected the crisp new $2.00 bill several times.. REFUSED!! 2nd Place San Saba,TX Dairy Queen burger place.. Managers enjoying a break.. I ordered a Hunger Buster with cheese, fries and drink combo. $15+ dollars so, I paid $16.00 dollars in $2.00 bills.. (Results were perplexing because the lady, freaked out, and ran to the back office to get a “cash counterfeit marker” then scrutinized every $2.00 bill I used to pay for the meal to go.. She was rather silently-rude, yet all of the $2.00 bills checked out!! There are towns in Western parts of Texas and Central Texas that scrutinized $2.00 bills. I’m ashamed of my fellow Texans, but that’s ok! The only positive experience was a Kwik Kar oil change place in Brownwood, TX where I brought my own oil and filter. $54.00 oil change and I used my $2.00 bills to pay. The oil-tech-clerk was happy to see me pay with $2.00 bills! I surmise 52% is FOR the use of $2.00 bills and 48% AGAINST the use of $2.00 bills.. State Funded facilities and the vending machines assigned, are Against the use of $2.00 bills due to antiquated regulations and equipment.. Sadly after explaining I wanted to video document my experience at the San Saba, TX Dairy Queen, the manager looked at me alarmed and quietly asked me to leave. My 45 years experience with fellow Texans are simply private people and do not want to be recorded. Unless they usually get paid to advertise and share on TH-cam Channel. State Facilities are not accepting of being recorded as they can use legal action. Privacy Laws? I dunno. I’m not taking the risk.
Well... $2 bills don't work in a lot of vending or similar machines. If this were a $5 bill, no need to watch the video. But from my experiences, there was no telling whether or not these machine would take twos.
Since I found this channel I grabbed a few 2s the last time I went to the bank. People like them. They are kinda special. Keep an eye open for a star 2 dollar bill. A star bill is where they reprint a bill and destroy the original but put a little star to the right of the serial number. It is recycling the number. I save 1s and 5s with a star when I can. I do not know if Uncle Sams Institute of Technology ever reprinted a two or not.
Glad you found the channel and glad to hear you're using $2s! I know all about star notes - there are a few videos on the channel about them. And if you're looking for more, I sell some 2013s cheap here: www.etsy.com/listing/1686574446/2013-two-dollar-bill-star-note-rare-2
Sometimes they're consecutive (and when they are, they are brand-new, pristine, never-touched), but most often lately they've been circulated. Since I list them on my Etsy site, you always know how many I got of each. 2dollarbillstore.etsy.com
If you get lucky and pull an old red seal in a withdrawal like I've done a few times, no. They don't keep them to sell. You can find a local coin & currency dealer for those. I do have some in an online store, on Etsy, and through my Whatnot account if you're looking for something in particular. Message me at john@2dollarbillmovie.com if you'd like.

Thanks! Good to hear from you. Bring someone with you when you spend $2 bills. Have them take some video of the exchange (phone turned horizontal). Maybe I could use it in a future video!
I wouldn't say "any" bank or credit union, although logic says you should. Because they're not in high demand, banks don't carry them often. Some do. Even if yours doesn't, you can ask them to order some for you, and then they'll have whatever you requested in about a week's time.
Back in the early 1970s when I had an Arco station we would get two or three $2.00 bills a month. These had been in circulation, not like now when you only see new bills. I'm afraid the $10.00 bill is on it's way out. The stores around where I live do not even have them in the cash drawer.
I rarely use cash at self-checkouts (just did so for this video), so I'm not aware. Interesting way the machines are configured if what you're saying is true.
Yes, self-checkout machines WILL accept 2 dollar bills, Target is a great example where their self-checkout machines can and will accept 2’s as payment

Yes! Someone else just commented on this video that they got one. They said it was the first time. But I guess it's possible. Scroll the comments here and see if you can find it - maybe you can reach out through TH-cam.
Click on the channel page and click on the Community tab. Scroll down to the question where I ask people to submit (There's an example on the screen next to me in this video). Not all self checkouts take $2.00 bills. It depends on the store and how they set up their machines. A lot of self checkouts, vending machines and self pay kiosks say "accepts $1, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100. Some don't accept bills larger than $20.
Interesting and from what I can see the self-checkout machines do list the following $1 George Washington two-dollar bill Thomas Jefferson Abraham Lincoln $5 Alexander Hamilton $10 bill $20 Andrew Jackson president Grant 50 Benjamin Franklin $100. I wonder if the machines will recognize a 500 dollar bill William McKinley
Another interesting video. I was actually surprised that WalMart and Target self check out accepted $2.00 bills. I have a question for you. Will slot machines accept $2.00 bills? Maybe I can win another $2.00 bill for this question.
In the full documentary on this channel, there was a moment where I tried to use one in a slot machine and it was rejected. It was a quick montage of $2s being rejected in a number of machines, and there was at least one other slot machine in there. So my answer would be no. But I can certainly run down to Hard Rock one day and try a bunch more. Videos like this seem to do pretty well; the one where I test $2 bills in ATM machines is one of the more watched videos I've put up recently.
Just saw Steve Wozniak on a SteveO video with a tablet with sheets of four $2 bills each.... Woz said they were legal tender 😳🤯😬 He seemed serious... 🤷🏻♀️
As will often happen with highly intelligent individuals, he didn't explain it super clearly. The print shop he goes to doesn't actually print the bills he uses, he gets uncut sheets from the Mint (anyone can buy them) and has the print shop make them into notepads.
They are legal tender, but I don't think anyone would accept them in a sheet, even if it were just 4 bills. Great question as to whether the self checkout machine would take 4 bills in one sheet. I know I put two bills in a self checkout machine for this video and it counted it as one, which is why I inserted every bill one at a time in the footage I used here.
now try using a 1oz gold eagle with s face value of 50$ to purchase groceries and see if they accept it. or try a 1/10 ounce if you don’t want to risk losing lots of money
$2s are becoming more practical than $1. Buy something for $499 plus tax, and you're better off inserting three $2s than a $10 or even two $5s and getting a bunch of change.
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary the $2 bills are becoming more of collectible not to go spend I don’t even spend the older dollars if I get the older hundreds twenty fifty ten dollars that no longer show up that look more real
Twos are still being printed... if you have one with a green seal & serial number, there's no reason to hold it; it isn't going up in value and is not becoming a collectible. The older bills of all denominations are definitely worth saving though.
Great video! I got my hands on a 2 dollar bill in December, at an exchange center. My country is in the balkans and Eastern Europe, and I don't know how many are here, probably very few...
Where did you post your question? Because as you can see from this video, two other people had the same question, which I bookmarked until I was ready to make this video. I'm sorry if I missed yours because I get a lot of comments and suggestions, but if I don't see it in the section where I request questions, I can't attribute the question to you.
As I said in the video, I went to a few just to avoid the possibility of the first machine accepting $2 bills being a one-off. Since you say they all are the same, then this was the obvious result. But going to more than one proves it to those who don't know as much as you do.
Machines can be configured differently from one store to the next. And they might not necessarily all have the same machines depending on when the store last upgraded.
Not all of these machines accept $2 bills. They are all designed to, but he who sets it up has the ability to turn that on or off. Every machine should be able to take them, but not every machine does.
Because as a closing manager, it suck’s to count out all the cash from self check outs. That’s why there are certain times where the machines will not accept cash and only cash transactions. How about you stay 2 hours after your shift to count cash transactions from self check out. Lol. And who uses $2 bills nowadays? Ugj

I haven't seen those yet! I wish you would have taken video of that attempt. Go back and try again (I know it won't work) and have someone film it with their phone. If you shoot it vertically and can send it to me, maybe I'll use the footage in a short. You can email me by finding that address on the channel page / ABOUT
I can confirm that my local Target's self checkout doesn't like the $2 bill's coin counterpart: it rejected my half-dollar, even though the slot was big enough for it.
That's interesting - I never thought to use coins like half or silver dollars in those. Of course, this IS a $2 bill channel. But thanks for the info! I may just have to try that on my own time.
My mom once got one in change at Walmart, she gave it to me lol, and my local bank has them, just give them $2 and you get a $2 bill
Can confirm that 2$ bills work at Fred Meyers
Was very worried about that. Thanks for letting us know. :)
Have you tried $2s in the cash machine??
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentaryWhy doesn’t the USA use coins for $1 and $2 instead of notes?
@@MK8MasterJunjie It's way easier to carry around paper money.
@@bland9876 It’s also way easier to destroy and forge too.
The real question is how did one bag of popcorn cost over $5 💩
GREAT question. Had to burn three of my twos for that.
Yeah, they look different! Doesn't happen with twos - they haven't changed the design since the bicentennial design in 1976
I have used 2$ bills once in a grocery store .. worked
Tried this week using one in a pa lottery machine at same store … rejected
Buying scratch offs for the stockings … not a regular buyer
haha thats pretty cool. I never thought about that, if a self checkout would accept $2 bills 🙂
Thanks for the information about self checkouts, you had better results than I expected. That's good that they do. Wonder if they accept half dollars or Sacajawea dollars? XD
When I was 13 and getting school lunch I paid in 2$ bills (over ten years ago) they didn't call the cops they were like "You should like put that in a collection or something", they refused service when asking the second time, just decided not to eat lunch that day. Was mildly upset and weirded out.
A lot of POS machines say on them which bills they accept. Usually, 1, 5, 10, and 20.
Lots of them don't say $2 but still accept them.
The intro to this video sounded like a dramatic Dateline special. LOL
Yup. Made dramatic on purpose! Keeps people watching (I hope)
Did it for effect. And sometimes, machines have taken one bill and not the next. It's good to see how each one fares individually
Pretty kool, now does it work on vending machines?
Hmmm, let's see... th-cam.com/video/EZlmj8a-Z98/w-d-xo.html
Hopefully you watched til the end, and the one supermarket that didn't take cash. I think we are definitely headed in that direction overall.
I wanted to buy a lottery ticket for a two dollar bill but the machine doesn’t take them 😢
I think I tried that once myself - I may have even filmed it but I haven't used it in a video yet. There are lots more machines I can make videos with; they work as short, themed videos instead of one long, drawn-out video where I hit every type of machine. More of these to come!
Love this! Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the comment.
I am just curious if the self-checkout machines that accept $2 bills will also give them out in change to future customers?
Most likely no. These machines give out coins most of the time, but in the few instances where cash is necessary, it's singles. Another denomination takes up more space and would have to be programmed, even though it's more practical.
I always thought and still do believe Jefferson and Madison were kind of screwed in regard to the currency they are on.
I had no idea you could get $2 bills at a bank. I haven't come across one in the wild in forever. I thought they were essentially collector's items now.
They still print them. Over 215,000 new ones were printed last year for fiscal year 2024. I've gone through about 6,000 of them this year alone.
I like paying for my McDonald's meal with $2 bills. Sometimes I get a double take by the newer cashiers.
Zoomers don't know about them.
Does a $1 coin work, tho?
Money is money lol of course it’ll work. Didn’t have to see the full video.
When you get 100 two dollar bills from the bank are the serial numbers consecutive also did you ever get any with all the same numbers?
Sometimes they're consecutive (and when they are, they are brand-new, pristine, never-touched), but most often lately they've been circulated. Since I list them on my Etsy site, you always know how many I got of each. 2dollarbillstore.etsy.com
Did you check those serial numbers before using those bills???
I believe I did.
Are there any banks that might have rare two dollar bills?
If you get lucky and pull an old red seal in a withdrawal like I've done a few times, no. They don't keep them to sell. You can find a local coin & currency dealer for those. I do have some in an online store, on Etsy, and through my Whatnot account if you're looking for something in particular. Message me at john@2dollarbillmovie.com if you'd like.
These clips showing up in my feed remind me I need to frame my $2 sheet…
Yes you do.
Hmmm are products taxed with the dollar or 2 dollar bill?????
Products that need to be taxed are taxed regardless of how you pay for them.
I’m a big $2.00 spending machine myself. I made a few friends spending $2.00 bills. The young cashier’s go nicely nuts yet say: “I’m buying these!!” 😅 I’d say 92% positive experience in Texas. Great video John!! 🫶🫶😁😁😇😇👍👍👍
Thanks! Good to hear from you. Bring someone with you when you spend $2 bills. Have them take some video of the exchange (phone turned horizontal). Maybe I could use it in a future video!
Can you get them at any bank or credit union?
I wouldn't say "any" bank or credit union, although logic says you should. Because they're not in high demand, banks don't carry them often. Some do. Even if yours doesn't, you can ask them to order some for you, and then they'll have whatever you requested in about a week's time.
Back in the early 1970s when I had an Arco station we would get two or three $2.00 bills a month. These had been in circulation, not like now when you only see new bills. I'm afraid the $10.00 bill is on it's way out. The stores around where I live do not even have them in the cash drawer.
I've noticed the self checkouts often give me multiple $5 bills instead of using a $10 bill for my change.
I guess there's no reason to watch?? There's actually a machine in this video that doesn't... you may want to see whose, and why.
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary Interesting, I didn’t know that there were cashless self-checkout machines
Here's a story about a 2 dollar bill: One day, my friend Andy had a daughter who was struggling with her heart. She decided to try a transplant and of course her and Andy had to wait. Then he found a 2 dollar bill that was blowing around, and that night that he found the 2 dollar bill she was in for a transplant so Andy will keep his bill forever in his pocket.

Is there a chance that I could find 2 dollar bills at a currency exchange in Europe?

Wow. If you watch the full documentary on this channel, you'll see a $2 bveing tried in a slot maching and being rejected.
Not all self checkouts take $2.00 bills. It depends on the store and how they set up their machines. A lot of self checkouts, vending machines and self pay kiosks say "accepts $1, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100. Some don't accept bills larger than $20.
nice, healthy choice with the Popcorn.
That Skinny Pop is terrific.
Highly unlikely since those aren't printed or circulated anymore.
Can you try to deposit a $2 bill in your bank's ATM?
I just went through your videos & found you had tried this & I had already watched a while ago & liked the video.

Just saw Steve Wozniak on a SteveO video with a tablet with sheets of four $2 bills each.... Woz said they were legal tender 😳🤯😬 He seemed serious... 🤷🏻♀️
Oh, and I expected the check outs to accept them just fine. 😁🤑😂

$2s are becoming more practical than $1. Buy something for $499 plus tax, and you're better off inserting three $2s than a $10 or even two $5s and getting a bunch of change.

Why would you keep going to walmarts? They all use the same machines....
Wal - Mart also takes 1 dollar coins

Why wouldn’t it work? It’s legal tender. The manufacturer has to design it to accept it 🤦🏼♂️

Because as a closing manager, it suck’s to count out all the cash from self check outs. That’s why there are certain times where the machines will not accept cash and only cash transactions.
