Lynn Thompson spent decades making the best knives. But when he was finally ready to sell the company, his own disinterest was subtly reflected in the product. Though this knife is FANTASTIC, the belt clip was a cheap, clumsy, unintegrated solution. Especially when compared to the flawless “ulti-clip” on the 52100 Drop Forged Boot Knife (Monolith Series). Similar shortcuts include an entirely flat side on the SAFE MAKER 2, instead of a 4 side grind... Cold Steel are still the best products for the price, but they do leave most customers problem solving. 🤷🏻♂️ If you’ve also noticed other shortcomings in later knives, let me know. I want to isolate a time frame for the best products.
Idk I still think they make some just as good as ever, but only certain models!!! My srk and Recon tanto both in vg-10 san mai are things of beauty and damn fine quality in my usage!!!
Yeah I bought the XL tanto kobun serated I love it. But just carry it in my pocket for EDC. Could not use the clip that came with it just wouldn't not hold it to the belt. So solve that problem
Good demonstration of using a knife that most wouldn't consider a woods knife in the woods! One of my all time favorite woods blades is and always has been the Recon Tanto!
@@northtestedknives4808 I still have my original Carbon V Recon Tanto with welted leather sheath. I waited years for another carbon steel version to come out until the SK5 version and then I bought one to use and two spares. Another knife that has really grown on me last year is the Finnish M95 and although shorter than my much loved Recon Tanto it is a good steel and ridiculously durable.
Just ordered the serrated model. Gonna install an ulti-clip 3.3. that'll clamp down and secure the blade where you can pull the knife straight out of the sheath. I enjoyed your video very much, subscribed!
I just got this knife love it just wish the guard was a little bigger and I'd like if I could move the sheath to clip to the back of my belt. I'm right handed so having it on the right of my belt I pull it out backwards beside that great knife
I love my kobun. I just ordered a lynn thompson signiture edition, with s35vn powdered supersteel. And he signs every box with a sharpie. No tanto tip though, its more like a outdoorsman profile sabre tip. Cant wait
On this one it does not since there's enough clearance to ride the spine. The dulling issue is abit overblown btw!!! The edge touches abit no matter what on my san mai srk, and I have drawn it 50 times without any serious loss of sharpness. It would still shave hair on my arm
@@Wildwestwrangler And I've seen blades sheathed in this stuff lose 100 points or more on the Brubacher scale in a single draw. It's not "overblown" at all.
I am a Big Cold Steel Kobun Fan! Right on! :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)
You are the best, bro.
Yours is what i was looking for and that is the kobun's use for firemaking. Thank you

The Cold Steel Kobun is a awesome, easy to conceal or carry Tactical Fixed Blade Knife. Great Video, Bro! :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

Fuk yea ! I love the recon tanto Aswell. I think I.got a San mai or 3v recon tanto in one of my reviews

Based on your finger bandage it's sharp
hahahah you noticed!!!!! VERY sharp
Throws good as well into cardboard awesome
Yeah! Cold Steel ought to market its big ass folders as Guillotines as well. I own a Vaquero, Code-4, Spartan, Lawman ect all good finger choppers.
I got to get one as chef's knife and self defense
If you're mounting it on a pack or lbve vest then use paracord with the lashing points and you can pull it any way you want
Cold Steel sells C clip hardware that is much better than that metal clip. The old style sheath had a poor belt mount also.

yup its a great lightweight backup:)
I got a teklok for that reason but it makes the whole thing a bit bulky...
@@DaveOfTheForest yea i getchya the teklok does havbe a big "sticks out" factor

Holy fuck. 10k views. Thanks so much guys!
Hey from Saskatchewan. Is it legal in Canada to carry IWB? I just ordered this knife from Amazon but with the serrated blade.
Not familiar with canadian laws, but I'd probably say no since "oh no scary serrated edge"
It's a Grey area. ... legal. But it's not a weapon" never say its for self defense. Just don't get caught with it that way. Altho it's legal. Lol
With a more secure belt attachment you don't have a use your thumb to draw the knife.
Exactly what i mean. With a teklok they're no need
This belt clip will have the sheath slide of completely
Please show this to tactical kitchen. He must dislike Japan or something bc he acted like he knew something about slicing food with it.
You use the target as the sheath...axe buried in a tree stump...a knife buried in a piece of ...wood block..joke..
And the material of the sheath dulls the blade. No, thank you.
