Did you notice the snakes never use their tongue to smell? They used their noses a lot of the time in this movie...sigh I want a great snake movie/book, akin to the Silverwing series or Owls of Gahoole...For the first story I heard of that stars snakes as the focus, this is not what I envisioned. That's another reason I love The Bad Guys. While this movie gives snakes a bad name, The Bad Guys does my favorite reptile well. They even establish that Mr. Snake can taste air with his tongue.
Ok so I watched this yesterday and I got sum things to say: 1. I honestly thought Ajar was a girl at first from the promotional material. 2. Ajar's fucking adorable and doesn't belong in this movie, I'm calling a SWAT team to rescue him. 3. Some of the jokes in here were like pushing it too far for kids. Like the joke about Dusties marrying their children, why? And the part near the end where Ajar rescues Eva and they think she's dating her brother. 4. Pietra is notoriously HIDEOUS. Like dear god put that poor bitch faced serpent out of her misery. 5. I wish the movie was like with Ajar meeting Eva as a kid and secretly hanging out with her over the years to become friends and an eventual crush, and then she ends up getting kidnapped and shit.
I saw this movie last year with my nieces, and I predicted the 'love story' as soon as Eva was introduced. Personally, I think they should've made the movie about Eva. Maybe let her take the life she had for granted, develop her and the dancer snakes, let her end up with George. They had way better chemistry and to top it off, they actually spent TIME TOGETHER and fucking got TO KNOW EACHOTHER.

As a zoologist it bothers me immensely that they mislead kids on snakes - they do not eat watermelons, snakes are predators strictly, and secretary birds EAT snakes, not work for them. Hell my biggest problem is, same as with Sing - this movie did not need the characters to be snakes at all to work, this is basically the story of Aladdin with snakes. Never in the movie do the characters behave in any way that'd make you think of REAL snakes. Hell, even Alpha and Omega, a terrible movie, tried to make the characters act like real wolves (at least in the first movie). This one does not even try, so it bothers me when I see 10/10 "lovely great movie" reviews of it on IMDB
I feel like this movie would've worked better as an animated series aimed at teens rather than a kid's movie. I thought it was okay, not good but not really bad. The ending left me disappointed though. It felt like nothing was resolved in the end.

It’s good not great but not bad either. My standards are much lowered, this movie doesn’t have an obnoxious rapping dog, the film isn’t corrupted and badly edited. It does not last 8 hours looking at the desert. The animation doesn’t make you bleach your eyes. I count this as a movie maybe a 8/10
I bet Gary wouldn't even wish his sister good luck if she went through surgery (since my sister had surgery yesterday, I had to put that in). Plus, this is the third obnoxious character named Gary I've seen in fiction; first in Pokémon, then in The Bully, and now this. Great review, by the way. :)

Maybe the king snake and the coral snake are pretending to be twins. Or maybe a king snake egg somehow ended up in a coral snake nest and they couldn't tell the difference. That doesn't answer how they got to the Sahara, but it would at least explain how two different species can be twins.

It suffers from what I can only describe as Foreign Movie Syndrome. In some art cultures it seems that plot elements can be more freely mixed or introduced with little explanation. The Italians seem the worst about this, followed by the Spanish but the French are far from immune. Something like "Loulou, l'incroyable secret" is mostly coherent but there are still very odd and unexplained elements like the crow witch and the plant. Even, say, "Ernest and Celestine" has strange elements, some of which may be cultural. Don't even get me started on "Jack and the cuckoo clock heart." At the very least, it makes the movies more of a glorious mess. But I like studying foreign culture and especially media like movies and books. A movie like this gives me good visuals, but better insights. Seeing a different perspective on it was awesome. Also, rap can be from other countries. Do you think they only play classical music in Europe? Is Italy all operas and Germany all polka? Like... Seeed doesn't exist? If Babymetal can be Japanese metal, there can be rappers from other places. If I remember the credits right this was done by a crew from Morocco.
I used to love this movie as a kid!! I didn’t know anybody else knew it lol. I didn’t remember if it would be worse as a teen, but I don’t care enough to watch it myself
To be honest, I actually really liked the movie. I liked the general idea of the story and I think Ajar is just a good dude who wouldn't leave someone who seemed kinda nice, (even if he'd only known her for five minutes) for dead or in a place she obviously didn't want to be (but don't get me wrong Eva was a bit of a brat). I think they liked each other straight away because it was nice, or even a relief, to know someone that didn't have the same way of thinking as their own tribe and wouldn't attack them for being the odd one out. Ajar goes to save her straight away but later he kinda questions whether it was the right decision. I think Eva was just mostly naïve. Her parents seem very controlling, and she was angry at them because she wanted to make her own decisions, to choose what happened in HER life, despite the fact that there is danger out in the big bad world that she isn't aware of, and her parents want her to be safe (Which is why she feels like it's jail). Naturally, instead of trying to reason with them (which seemed like a hopeless option anyway, but not one that wasn't worth trying) she thought the solution was to get as far away as possible from them, the ridiculously small area in which she had to live, and their control. She is over confident and naïve and also just ignorant. Gary is an asshole. but I liked the way that after a while, he started to care. But seriously, he is so ANNOYING! He just seemed like another obstacle Ajar would have to endure in order to save Eva. They definitely could've done without the adult jokes, and put more effort into the writing. While it can be good to bring adult themes into a kids movie, they went too far with this. I think it would've been better if they'd just focused on the racism factor that they started out with, rather than bringing in drug addiction and sexual references. I mean, overall the plot definitely could've been better and I was extremely disappointed when I realised this. The fact that there's just so much WASTED POTENTIAL was almost as annoying as Gary. The excellent animation and graphics that this movie had was kinda wasted on the plot and writing.
I actually like Gary. Well, I like what he could’ve been. Just like everything in this movie, he is a very interesting character, but they just show him in the worst way possible. He has some genuinely good ideas, surprisingly knows a lot about mental health, and overall could be very fun. People say he’s a bad sibling, AND IT COULD HAVE BEEN GOOD! I mean, we see their family for like a couple minutes, and we already see: the siblings are bickering and are clearly not close, the daughter desperately tries to run away, a son who just gets wasted 24/7 and acts like nothing in life matters to him and he is ready to die at any given moment, and a mother who has a single line in the entire movie, and that is when asked “What’s wrong with our family?” she doesn’t even acknowledge the question. The picture is clear. And could be such a great plot about a family with a high status but is absolutely miserable because of it. I mean, , come on, he gets surprised when Ajar says he doesn’t know who his father is, it already has so much potential! Getting recognised for his personality and not his fathers status? Getting treated like an equal for once? Getting a genuine friend who isn’t just someone who gets high with him? HIS STUPID POLLEN ADDICTION COULD ACTUALLY BE A GOOD PLOT LINE! And Gary could have had a way better character development than what he got, and could’ve actually help Ajar develop! He does give him genuinely good advises, and actually gives him a pep talk at the end that would work, if they just cared to do something right. Eva and Gary could’ve had a very heartwarming moment of opening up to each other and deciding to try and mend their relationship because they’re each other’s actual family and they can understand each other’s struggles. It could’ve been so good. Also I know I’m not the only one who thinks Ajar and Gary had more potential for romance than Ajar and Eve.
I feel like whoever made this movie wasn’t willing to give something which could have been really, really interesting a chance. Which is a crying shame, because there are so many things which could have worked... but far too much which didn’t.

You made good points on things about this movie that doesn't make sense, but remember this is a cartoon about talking desert animal. They can have concert, they can know what pizza is, they can dance like Michael Jackson snake don't live together but sense it a different world they do in this one. Here’s how I would fix this movie; First change some of the character names to better fit the setting. So in my version Gary is named Gil. And Gil follows Ajar to save Eva (who in this version would be named Eila) on purpose. Ajar would be frustrated with him and say he can save her on his own but Gil would say he’s coming to save his sister whether he likes it or not! Along their journey Ajar keeps talking about how he loves Eila and wants to get back to her and Gil says point blank that it isn’t love. He doesn’t even know Eila. He’s not in love with her! It’s a crush! And frankly he’s being creepy! And when they do find Eila it’s Gil who makes the first move to save her. And after they all escape Eila says that she is now dating George (who is instead named Ghani) Ajar is jealous at first but then realizes that Gil was right, he didn’t love Eila, he hardly knew her. But Ghani does. So he’s happy for them and they all return home. And maybe Ajar and Gil could be this film’s couple. Since they did spend the whole movie together. Like how Pebble and the Penguin should have ended
I actually saw the movie in segments with long pauses on netflix inbetween viewing. After the dance scene, I needed a bit of a break because it was a very artsy sequence but the symbolism to me almost seemed to imply a sort of brainwishing/rape sort of thing in a way that the Bad Guy with the flute actually makes them mate. I needed to process that a bit and surprisingly they never really adress that again. Also that anorexia joke. wtf france? Watching that in segments made it feel like a tv show almost as the movie doesn't seem to have solid structure. We are being introduced to new characters every 15 minutes. I assume the writers and animators are probably used to create more tv productions instead of movies. I actually liked the animation and most of the character designs there was talent there. I like how the snake pattern was more of an artsy tatoo that actually looks pretty cool. Other then that its sadly just a weak movie overall.
Out of every animated film in 2017 this film is honestly the least bad out of all of them because the writers atleast tried to make a coherent story even though the entire film ended up just being a buddy road trip throughout the whole thing, the animation is really solid thanks to the smooth character animation and the backgrounds might need a little more details put on to them they actually look relaxing to look at and the design on the snakes and the crab isn't that bad it does have issue like with the human designs and everything might need a little more detail but despite those the animation is pretty good and the characters (with the exception of Gary) are atleast not hatable

That joke about gay marriage is funny, but sad. People are fine with letting kids shows and movies treat them like idiots, and do the most inappropriate things, but when there's homosexuality in a show, everyone loses their mind.
It's true that this movie is bad and has terrible humor but he is not as aweful as Norm of the North or the Emoji movie. Compare to theses films, this one is ok; yep that's what i think! It has nice animation and the music is fine, not the songs though; they sucks. Oh and the jokes are lame and stupid but thoses in Norm are far worst. This movie is odd, unusual, weird, boring, racism, and basic, all in one. Ajar is a snake that wants a different life-style because the snakes he lives with bully him, and treat him unfairly, along with his best friend, Pit. While Eva... is probably the most cringe character in the movie. She's that basic, " I wanna see the world, go explore, not stay in one place forever, besides, it sucks here ", even though we've never seen her lifestyle yet so we can't empathize with her, and they shoved this down our throats forcefully and way too early in the film. She's not even given proper character development, and in a few minutes, she becomes the basic " damsel in distress " type of roled character. So when she's captured, I don't even feel sorry for her. Even her parents suck yet they were there for a few minutes, basically showing their lack of love and care for their own child. So that part of Eva I can empathize with, but the other part, no way, just... no way. Speaking of being there for a few minutes, the Dustie's that bullied Ajar and Pit were there for a short amount as well, just like the birds. So basically those characters that were barley in the movie had no purpose in the film, but only the birds served a small purpose to the plot by transporting Ajar, Pit, and Gary to the canyons but that's it. And speaking of Gary... he's a poorly written character. His role is basically comic relief, but he fails miserably. His comedy is focused souly on how rescuing his own sibling is bad, and that they should just not care for Eva in the slightest and that she's fine. Which ADDS up to Gary's annoyance. He's careless, greedy, and selfish, only caring about himself, and how his stupidity and dumbness makes him a terrible friend to travel with. That's Gary's character, that's how he lives, by being a selfish little pain in the neck. Plus Gary acts like he's on drugs, and how does he know about Batman and Robin? Are snakes using TV's now? (And why do they have to add a peeing moment in the movie? It's disgusting...) And the dancing sequences add absolutely nothing to the main plot, feel completely unessesary, and cringe. And how does Eva fall in love for Ajar even though she spent more time with George? That's just serious betrayal, all for a guy that looks more handsome yet you barley know him. How dumb is that? George has been supporting her, caring for her, AND they actually understood eachother. So the Ajar and Eva relationship is extremely dumb. But how did Gary all of a sudden change in the blink of an eye THAT drastically? But HOW does this STUPID " villain " survive SNAKE venom? What did he do? Drink magical potion off screen? And now Ajar and Eva are completely a thing, so she basically dumps George THAT quickly? That's ridiculous. And Gary gets a girlfriend too? Bruh... come on. Overall, Sahara is pretty bad In my opinion. The story is bland, boring, and basic. The characters are poorly developed, and not done right. For a kids movie, it doesn't have appropriate themes in it, and had some weird stuff in it. Drug addiction, un-healthy relationships, and racism, which just isn't appropriate for a kids movie. Besides, the movie is cringe, boring, and felt awkward to watch. I give Sahara a 2.2/10. It loses tons of points for these problems PLUS that there's NO theme OR life-lesson for the audience to learn which pisses me off. I'm honestly shocked this was the #1 kids movie of it's time on Netflix, but it's still SO.... BADDDD!!!!!! Overall, don't watch Sahara. It's not worth your time, your energy, or patience.

because unlike Gary, Kacchan actually has depth. You understand why he is the way he is and as the show goes on, and especially at the end of season 3, he begins to learn more and even changes. Gary's just annoyingly an asshole. Kacchan's an asshole too but he doesn't give a shit as opposed to Gary who didn't have any friends.

The Italians seem the worst about this, followed by the Spanish but the French are far from immune. Something like "Loulou, l'incroyable secret" is mostly coherent but there are still very odd and unexplained elements like the crow witch and the plant. Even, say, "Ernest and Celestine" has strange elements, some of which may be cultural. Don't even get me started on "Jack and the cuckoo clock heart." At the very least, it makes the movies more of a glorious mess. But I like studying foreign culture and especially media like movies and books. A movie like this gives me good visuals, but better insights. Seeing a different perspective on it was awesome.
Also, rap can be from other countries. Do you think they only play classical music in Europe? Is Italy all operas and Germany all polka? Like... Seeed doesn't exist? If Babymetal can be Japanese metal, there can be rappers from other places. If I remember the credits right this was done by a crew from Morocco.
I used to love this movie as a kid!! I didn’t know anybody else knew it lol. I didn’t remember if it would be worse as a teen, but I don’t care enough to watch it myself
To be honest, I actually really liked the movie. I liked the general idea of the story and I think Ajar is just a good dude who wouldn't leave someone who seemed kinda nice, (even if he'd only known her for five minutes) for dead or in a place she obviously didn't want to be (but don't get me wrong Eva was a bit of a brat). I think they liked each other straight away because it was nice, or even a relief, to know someone that didn't have the same way of thinking as their own tribe and wouldn't attack them for being the odd one out. Ajar goes to save her straight away but later he kinda questions whether it was the right decision.
I think Eva was just mostly naïve. Her parents seem very controlling, and she was angry at them because she wanted to make her own decisions, to choose what happened in HER life, despite the fact that there is danger out in the big bad world that she isn't aware of, and her parents want her to be safe (Which is why she feels like it's jail). Naturally, instead of trying to reason with them (which seemed like a hopeless option anyway, but not one that wasn't worth trying) she thought the solution was to get as far away as possible from them, the ridiculously small area in which she had to live, and their control. She is over confident and naïve and also just ignorant.
Gary is an asshole. but I liked the way that after a while, he started to care. But seriously, he is so ANNOYING! He just seemed like another obstacle Ajar would have to endure in order to save Eva.
They definitely could've done without the adult jokes, and put more effort into the writing. While it can be good to bring adult themes into a kids movie, they went too far with this. I think it would've been better if they'd just focused on the racism factor that they started out with, rather than bringing in drug addiction and sexual references.
I mean, overall the plot definitely could've been better and I was extremely disappointed when I realised this. The fact that there's just so much WASTED POTENTIAL was almost as annoying as Gary. The excellent animation and graphics that this movie had was kinda wasted on the plot and writing.
I actually like Gary. Well, I like what he could’ve been. Just like everything in this movie, he is a very interesting character, but they just show him in the worst way possible. He has some genuinely good ideas, surprisingly knows a lot about mental health, and overall could be very fun. People say he’s a bad sibling, AND IT COULD HAVE BEEN GOOD! I mean, we see their family for like a couple minutes, and we already see: the siblings are bickering and are clearly not close, the daughter desperately tries to run away, a son who just gets wasted 24/7 and acts like nothing in life matters to him and he is ready to die at any given moment, and a mother who has a single line in the entire movie, and that is when asked “What’s wrong with our family?” she doesn’t even acknowledge the question. The picture is clear. And could be such a great plot about a family with a high status but is absolutely miserable because of it. I mean, , come on, he gets surprised when Ajar says he doesn’t know who his father is, it already has so much potential! Getting recognised for his personality and not his fathers status? Getting treated like an equal for once? Getting a genuine friend who isn’t just someone who gets high with him? HIS STUPID POLLEN ADDICTION COULD ACTUALLY BE A GOOD PLOT LINE! And Gary could have had a way better character development than what he got, and could’ve actually help Ajar develop! He does give him genuinely good advises, and actually gives him a pep talk at the end that would work, if they just cared to do something right. Eva and Gary could’ve had a very heartwarming moment of opening up to each other and deciding to try and mend their relationship because they’re each other’s actual family and they can understand each other’s struggles. It could’ve been so good. Also I know I’m not the only one who thinks Ajar and Gary had more potential for romance than Ajar and Eve.

You made good points on things about this movie that doesn't make sense, but remember this is a cartoon about talking desert animal. They can have concert, they can know what pizza is, they can dance like Michael Jackson snake don't live together but sense it a different world they do in this one. Here’s how I would fix this movie;
First change some of the character names to better fit the setting. So in my version Gary is named Gil. And Gil follows Ajar to save Eva (who in this version would be named Eila) on purpose. Ajar would be frustrated with him and say he can save her on his own but Gil would say he’s coming to save his sister whether he likes it or not! Along their journey Ajar keeps talking about how he loves Eila and wants to get back to her and Gil says point blank that it isn’t love. He doesn’t even know Eila. He’s not in love with her! It’s a crush! And frankly he’s being creepy! And when they do find Eila it’s Gil who makes the first move to save her. And after they all escape Eila says that she is now dating George (who is instead named Ghani) Ajar is jealous at first but then realizes that Gil was right, he didn’t love Eila, he hardly knew her. But Ghani does. So he’s happy for them and they all return home.
And maybe Ajar and Gil could be this film’s couple. Since they did spend the whole movie together. Like how Pebble and the Penguin should have ended

I was A very sensitive child . Around 10 maybe 11 I watched this it freaked me out so bad!!!! Especially the ending. I’m now 15!!
I actually saw the movie in segments with long pauses on netflix inbetween viewing. After the dance scene, I needed a bit of a break because it was a very artsy sequence but the symbolism to me almost seemed to imply a sort of brainwishing/rape sort of thing in a way that the Bad Guy with the flute actually makes them mate. I needed to process that a bit and surprisingly they never really adress that again. Also that anorexia joke. wtf france? Watching that in segments made it feel like a tv show almost as the movie doesn't seem to have solid structure. We are being introduced to new characters every 15 minutes. I assume the writers and animators are probably used to create more tv productions instead of movies. I actually liked the animation and most of the character designs there was talent there. I like how the snake pattern was more of an artsy tatoo that actually looks pretty cool. Other then that its sadly just a weak movie overall.

Out of every animated film in 2017 this film is honestly the least bad out of all of them because the writers atleast tried to make a coherent story even though the entire film ended up just being a buddy road trip throughout the whole thing, the animation is really solid thanks to the smooth character animation and the backgrounds might need a little more details put on to them they actually look relaxing to look at and the design on the snakes and the crab isn't that bad it does have issue like with the human designs and everything might need a little more detail but despite those the animation is pretty good and the characters (with the exception of Gary) are atleast not hatable

That joke about gay marriage is funny, but sad. People are fine with letting kids shows and movies treat them like idiots, and do the most inappropriate things, but when there's homosexuality in a show, everyone loses their mind.
It's true that this movie is bad and has terrible humor but he is not as aweful as Norm of the North or the Emoji movie. Compare to theses films, this one is ok; yep that's what i think! It has nice animation and the music is fine, not the songs though; they sucks. Oh and the jokes are lame and stupid but thoses in Norm are far worst.

This movie is odd, unusual, weird, boring, racism, and basic, all in one. Ajar is a snake that wants a different life-style because the snakes he lives with bully him, and treat him unfairly, along with his best friend, Pit. While Eva... is probably the most cringe character in the movie. She's that basic, " I wanna see the world, go explore, not stay in one place forever, besides, it sucks here ", even though we've never seen her lifestyle yet so we can't empathize with her, and they shoved this down our throats forcefully and way too early in the film. She's not even given proper character development, and in a few minutes, she becomes the basic " damsel in distress " type of roled character. So when she's captured, I don't even feel sorry for her. Even her parents suck yet they were there for a few minutes, basically showing their lack of love and care for their own child. So that part of Eva I can empathize with, but the other part, no way, just... no way. Speaking of being there for a few minutes, the Dustie's that bullied Ajar and Pit were there for a short amount as well, just like the birds. So basically those characters that were barley in the movie had no purpose in the film, but only the birds served a small purpose to the plot by transporting Ajar, Pit, and Gary to the canyons but that's it. And speaking of Gary... he's a poorly written character. His role is basically comic relief, but he fails miserably. His comedy is focused souly on how rescuing his own sibling is bad, and that they should just not care for Eva in the slightest and that she's fine. Which ADDS up to Gary's annoyance. He's careless, greedy, and selfish, only caring about himself, and how his stupidity and dumbness makes him a terrible friend to travel with. That's Gary's character, that's how he lives, by being a selfish little pain in the neck. Plus Gary acts like he's on drugs, and how does he know about Batman and Robin? Are snakes using TV's now? (And why do they have to add a peeing moment in the movie? It's disgusting...) And the dancing sequences add absolutely nothing to the main plot, feel completely unessesary, and cringe. And how does Eva fall in love for Ajar even though she spent more time with George? That's just serious betrayal, all for a guy that looks more handsome yet you barley know him. How dumb is that? George has been supporting her, caring for her, AND they actually understood eachother. So the Ajar and Eva relationship is extremely dumb. But how did Gary all of a sudden change in the blink of an eye THAT drastically? But HOW does this STUPID " villain " survive SNAKE venom? What did he do? Drink magical potion off screen? And now Ajar and Eva are completely a thing, so she basically dumps George THAT quickly? That's ridiculous. And Gary gets a girlfriend too? Bruh... come on. Overall, Sahara is pretty bad In my opinion. The story is bland, boring, and basic. The characters are poorly developed, and not done right. For a kids movie, it doesn't have appropriate themes in it, and had some weird stuff in it. Drug addiction, un-healthy relationships, and racism, which just isn't appropriate for a kids movie. Besides, the movie is cringe, boring, and felt awkward to watch. I give Sahara a 2.2/10. It loses tons of points for these problems PLUS that there's NO theme OR life-lesson for the audience to learn which pisses me off. I'm honestly shocked this was the #1 kids movie of it's time on Netflix, but it's still SO.... BADDDD!!!!!! Overall, don't watch Sahara. It's not worth your time, your energy, or patience.

because unlike Gary, Kacchan actually has depth. You understand why he is the way he is and as the show goes on, and especially at the end of season 3, he begins to learn more and even changes. Gary's just annoyingly an asshole. Kacchan's an asshole too but he doesn't give a shit as opposed to Gary who didn't have any friends.
