Castles of Burgundy giveaway here: And its not the version i'm showing in the video, its the anniversary edition, which has a solo mode as well apparently. gleam.io/gGF2t/castles-of-burgundy-20th-anniversary-edition-giveaway
Very generous of you!
So, when i first did the 3mbg top 100 games i got a fair few comments about not having a Feld game in the list. Some of them were hilariously rude from very fragile people. "No Feld, then you are not a gamer and your intellect is subpar", that sort of stuff. Hopefully those prats have moved on from the channel, because it somewhat pains me to say that Castles is an excellent game that i should have played earlier.
I definitely don't like all Feld games, but some of them are really great. I feel like there's a game or 2 for every type of gamer in his catalog.
I'm not a massive Feld fan. My group found CoB to be a little too balanced - you basically earn points at a fairly steady rate no matter what you do, so its hard to feel like your decisions are actually having a significant impact on the outcome. Our other issue was that you either had to play 4p to ensure you saw all the tiles, or accept the result was going to be determined to a fair extent by the right tiles to pay off your early decisions happening to be in the game.
Don't sweat the naysayers! We tend to remember the negative instead of the positive, but forget that stuff. I appreciate your efforts.
I finally feel comfortable saying that I really find this game just average for me. I always felt like I must be missing something because I love games that do the things Castles does. But I don't. I recognize it's genius though. I used to love a ton of Feld but now it's just Notre Dame and Merlin but I'll gladly play almost anything he's done. On people...that's unfortunate.
This game has been a go-to for my main board game group for years. And although there is minimal player interaction, there is still enough interaction while you compete for scarce resources. An older game that is still in my top ten of all time.
One of my favorite board games
Never played this game but gamefound recently announced a new updated version and thank you 3 minute boardgame for saving me time with this overview!
Always a pleasure to help. Its a pretty great game too
Great take, loved your comments on the importance of some solid core gameplay, it’s always good to remember and keep in mind. Keep up the awesome work!
Bought it last winter.
Love this game. Best played one on one.
I also recommend the card and dice games.
I love that you have reviewed this. I got this game early in my board gaming journey and it was as cheap as chips and it got my wife playing euros with me. It does so much at a low price and low barrier to entry. It also proves that you don’t need plastic and ££‘a to play a good game. :)
Millennium Falcon of a game. I shall be using this one for sure. :)
I love Castles. The main issue for me if that being A 4 player game it competes in a tight category. I often have more than 4 players, so when I get the chance I usually want to play Gaia project or Gloomhaven.
It is a good one though when you have a crowd that might not enjoy a really complex game
I recently purchased the original edition (used) along with the solo board from BGG store. I really like it. I also upgraded the components.
What sort of upgrades?
@@3MBG Metal silverlings; meeples for the worker tiles; for the goods tiles, I used double-stick adhesive tape to make the tiles thicker; and a cloth bag for the goods tiles.
Maybe my number 1 game all time. Setup is the only drawback
Teamwork on that one. We just throw the tiles in the middle and everyone sorts them out
My number one as well. I've always considered CoB's setup to be pretty easy. Played Lisboa tonight, and that setup is crazy.
Imo the best Feld game...by far 🙃
What's 2nd best? This is the only one ive played
@@3MBG .cant say that i have played many maybe 6-7..not a feld fan per se but i quite like castles.. only other game by him that i have enjoyed is bruges but wouldnt put it in my top 100.. still a very good game...others are meeh..
"Millennium Falcon game" -- nice stroke there.👏👏
“She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts, kid.” -- Han Solo⚡
A millennium falcon game...great term 🙂
Bloody love this game, so ugly yet so satisfying.
A friend described it as the guy from school you always thought was a dork, until you actually talked to him and it turns out hes really interesting and you feel bad for judging him based on appearances
@@3MBG Love this description
That's how I feel about Terra Mystica lol. I may give this game a try.
@@tzera_rhuon lol good comparison - except Castles is only about £20 whereas TM is a wee bit more expensive. I’d love to give TM a go someday but since I own Gaia Project I won’t be buying TM so will have to hope I bump into it from a friend.
I've played the original CoB at least 40-50 times and not once did I think it was ugly. But knowing that so many other people think it's ugly makes me think it's beautiful.
With the new edition it’s pretty on the outside too now!
That it is
Low conflict point salad - my fave! Actually not kidding. Have really enjoyed playing this on Yucata in these {redacted} times and it's one of the games I don't miss the tactile experience of because the bits are so cheap & bland.
They did a 10 year edition; they didn't improve the cardstock quality. I just keep it as the original
Same. If it ain't broke...
My goto game in airport's departure lounge. Excellent app on Steam with great AI implementation / graphics / animation.
App is amazing...Castles, TTA and Root are best i have played in digital form
dude your a damn legend. first vid of yours ive seen and im like beaming about watching more tomorrow. Stay handsome you legend!
Cheers :)
Oh, that means you didn't like On Mars. Fair enough, still keen to hear your opinion!
Still playing through it, but it just hasn't clicked with me yet. There may be a eureka moment, but so far it feels a little like work playing it
@@3MBG first game is work. Second game you still forget stuff. Third game you figure out the synergies and realise there is a hidden semi-coop element with techs, where everybody needs to pull their weight to move the machine forward. Some aspects almost remind me of Archipelago.
Heh, i hated archipelago with a furious passion.
My copy of Castles of Burgundy came with a solo mode
Interesting, was it the newer version than the one i used in the video? Did the tokens, box look different?
@@3MBG Yes, the box looks different on mine and it looks like they changed the artwork. I have the 20th Anniversary Edition
Ah, they must have rustled up a solo mode for that version. Makes sense. Cheers for the clarification
What are your thoughts on continuing with BGA sponsorship now that BGA sold to Asmodee?
No difference whatsoever. I'm sponsored by Board game Atlas. Asmodee purchased Board Game Arena. The first is a website for finding good prices on games and being part of a game community, the second is an online platform. Very different things
@@3MBG Ahh, wow, I biffed that lol. I just saw Boardgame A_____ and my brain filled it in. Thanks for clarifying.
All good. Board game arena is pretty good though, not sure what Asmodee buying them means long term. Some things they have managed well, others not so well.
@@3MBG what's your username on BGA? mine is sunnypsyop. I'd love to play with you sometime. Cheers
The Spain edition comes with all the expansions ;)
Oh that's cool
Shipping goods 2 VP?
...and now it's pretty on the outside too. for a crazy sum.
I really like this game but it's hard to bring to the table after I added Fleet the Dice Game to my collection. They seem so similar to me minus the setup time and the amount of pieces. I dont know how much longer Castles will stay in my collection.
Interesting, i've not thought about the 2 of them being that similar, but they are a little
What's a millennium falcon without a solo 🥲
True that. The new version i got that just arrived is like a naboo cruiser, its very chrome.
>>> Like 700
I ordered Circadians last week and some A-hole stole it from my mailbox.😟
That sucks
What is your sign on phrase? “Key on a go go?”
Kia ora Koutou, it's in the subtitles. It's te reo maori for hi all.
@@3MBG oooooo! I’ve always wondered! Awesome 👏🏽
So im guessing u didn't like on mars?
Still doing the testing for it, but so far it has not wowed me
