    Rooting cuttings and keeping your peppers indoors over winter is great for situations where MANY varieties are being grown close together, and the odds of accidental hybridization are high. Older pepper plants seem to be more productive, too! Great video 👏🏻

    I didn't even know pepper cutting would grow roots. 1 branch was destroyed by my dog fell off from the plant. I felt bad so just plugged the branch into the ground. It has some leaves and a big pepper. Slowly all the leaves died and the chili turned red and died as well. A few days later. I saw small leaves coming out of the corner of the branches. 🦔
    I was so happy. It was like a miracle!! 😚
    I never ever thought a pepper branch would survive and turn into another plant if I put it on the ground!
    Not to mention, the weather was extreme as well. Many days were ~104F!! Miracle and marvelous!
    It breaks my heart to see the branch to went through such harsh condition and survived!
    Gotta take care of them better next time by placing them in nice weather! 😀

    Nice video, it really helped me clear some doubts on pepper propagation.
    On a side note, those chiltepin pepper look really nice. Here in Sonora chiltepin grows naturally, and in its wild form (no one farms chiltepin here, it is always gathered) it is usually much more smaller and hard. I have been told that when chiltepin is provided with fertilizers and good growing conditions they grow bigger, and now I see what they meant. You should do an experiment on providing chiltepin with conditions simulating those in the wild. While I have never tried homegrown chiltepin, I have been told wild chiltepin is much better.

    I've had success scraping the outer skin of the bottom half inch or so of the cutting, then dipping the cutting into a cut aloe vera stem to help minimize rot. I then dip it into the rooting powder and place it in coarse sand. The powder sticks to the aloe vera jelly like glue. I do all of your other steps (cut away extra leaves, remove small peppers or flowers, keep at least one node that will go into the sand, keep out of direct sunlight). Sometimes they do wilt a bit for a day or so but then they recover. Keep watering to maintain hydration. The sand ensures excellent drainage.

So I have probably left it too late for cuttings. My habanero, jalapeños and bell peppers are grown in a poly tunnel. I suppose my option this late in my growing season is to overwinter the plants I have already growing and let them go dormant ready for next spring?

    Do you think a poblano plant would survive 50 degrees? 😅 freaking texas man, i had two amazing poblanos growing, then we hit 110+ for weeks and they just stopped growing, and turning red. So i plucked them off. Then all it did was just grow leaves and longer stems. Finally got cooler (90s) and it started blooming out the wazoo and put on 10 peppers. But the plant is so spindly and old leaves a lot of leaves fell off. I fertilized it to help it out and cut 5 of the peppers off. They seem to be growing more now. But now we are about to get a cold front in a few days and a ton of rain all week. 😩😩

    • @Growingthehomegarden
      @Growingthehomegarden  ปีที่แล้ว

      50 degrees shouldn't be a problem! I have a few plants still here in Tennesse growing and we've hit the lower 40s. Frosts and freezes may kill them but 50s will just slow their growth a little.

    can i take a cutting from a pepper plant on its last legs or old?...will the new plant act old or produce like a new plant?

    • @Growingthehomegarden
      @Growingthehomegarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Steve, Peppers are perennials in tropical climates so you can take cuttings off of older peppers just fine provided it is recent first year growth. I use this method to take cuttings at the end of our growing season and look for healthy cuttings that tend to be from terminal growth (the branch ends essentially). When rooted the plant should act like a perfectly normal pepper plant and be able to produce new peppers. You don't have to do this at the end of the season though. You can increase your pepper plants through cloning instead of growing a bunch from seed. It's a good way to make more pepper plants from what may have been expensive or hard to find pepper seeds.

    • @Growingthehomegarden

      Thanks for that information. The reason I ask is my pepper Plants are still produced lots of Bell Peppers, but they are all a lot smaller than the first peppers I harvested from them. I’m definitely going to start cloning my best Pepper,Eggplant and Tomato Plants.

    • @Growingthehomegarden
      @Growingthehomegarden  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mdlanor5414 If the first peppers were larger I suspect it has to do with the soil nutrients. Adding a good balanced organic fertilizer to the soil may improve things. It could also have to do with seasonal weather. If it's been dry the fruit may be smaller.
