The Surprisingly Strict Rule In-N-Out Male Employees Must Follow

- Every fast food chain has a dress code that employees have to abide by, but In-N-Out's seems to be particularly strict. Walk into any location, and you'll see employees wearing almost exactly the same thing as they whip up your Double-Double. There are actually nine distinct pieces of the uniform outlined in the employee handbook: name tag, black shoes, belt, red apron and pin, hat, white shirt, pants, and socks.
Depending on an employee's gender, there are also a few other requirements for what they must wear while on the clock. Here's the surprisingly strict rule In-N-Out's male employees must follow.

Do you feel any of these rules are too strict?
@Mr. Cool The employer should be allowed to dictate a dress code. But that doesn’t mean I agree with it. To me, cleanliness is the only important thing. I love different hair colors and tattoos, piercings. Nothing wrong with them.
@Mr. Cool Great. Just dehumanize people because of their fashion choices. You seem nice.
@Mr. Cool I know. I’m a physician. I can follow the rules. But that doesn’t mean they make sense.

In N Out employees are the best trained in all of fast food. I have never gotten a wrong order from drive thru because everyone repeats your order to you.
I worked for Taco Time back in the late 2000's and believe me In N Out training is pretty basic compared to Taco Times military drill like training.
Chic fil a is good at getting orders right
Yea they get a attitude at other places and dont even want to repeat
Just because the first cashier repeats it doesn't mean the cook gets it right.

For their last Christmas party the employees were able to go to Disneyland for night and a section of the park was only opened to them.
This reminded me of the Hughes Aircraft Night at Disneyland back in the Sixties. The whole park was reserved, but I could be wrong.
@Stewie Griffin that's in-n-out not McDonald's . And plus Cali you earn more in fastfood spots than any other shitty state. Cali is still shitty tho.
In N out has the highest wages for fast foot in CA

@Stewie Griffin In-n-out isn't like McDonald's. My sister was a trainer , and one year I was in high school, they foot the bill for a trip to universal studios ,. I started working there around a few years later and they took us rented out set up,. Where they put up rides , raffles ECT .
They even give out Christmas gifts. I still have a blanket from one year. My sister has a watch I think
as far as the raises. Back in the days you got a quarter raise for every step up u took. So lowest is the table cleaner or whatever, then calling out the orders and cashiers .
Fries was 3rd step. Then board then cook.
I've been to In-N-Out so many times that I can't count, and I have never had less than a great experience. The staff is always genuinely friendly, and the food is always spot-on. This friendly experience seems to extend out to the customers. Some people don't care for their fries, but if you eat them fresh at the restaurant, I think that they are fantastic. Cheers!
Try the “well done” fries from the not so secret menu. Slightly longer wait but well worth it.

In-n-Out is the Costco of fast food. They treat their employees right and the quality and consistency is off the charts. I’ve been there no joke at least 500 times at probably 25 different locations all around the southwest and it’s always been great. There’s a reason it’s always packed.
I literally always say that in n out, cosco, and Trader Joe’s are the best places to work because of how well they treat staff

I live down the street from an in and out. I spoke to many of the employees they said hands down the best job they ever had. They once messed up my order pretty bad and I felt the need to bring it up cause it was the worst I ever got on top of the amount of time I waited. They ended up giving me $20.00 gift card to make up for my $8.00 order.
My best advice for you. Never order coffee or it will double or triple your wait time.
Of course an Asian boy complains about wait time at a busy restaurant
@@pronounshismajesty3542 what's wrong with you? I hate people who piss and shit about wait times as well, but that was too far man. I just hope we can just meet on a common ground and just tell this "Allen Han" to shove his hot coffee where it hurts aye? Fk you Allen Han
To the 3 of you who replied to Allen, what's wrong with your heads? Didn't know you can't complain about wait times and that mentioning his race is relevant to your point. If I waited 20 minutes for a cheeseburger, I sure as hell would complain.
@@HoloScope sorry I have a mental illness
For 8 bucks at a fast food joint the fact you had any expectations is hilarious and the fact you complained is even funnier. Simply cut your losses and move on. Your complaining about 8 bucks worth of food being completely wrong is what is wrong with this country. It’s just 8 bucks and if you don’t have the means to spend it then you learned a lesson in not spending what you can’t afford. If it’s on principle then your lack of focus and importance in life is really lacking. People who complain about poor service at fast food at restaurants are not normally reliable because they usually complain about everything if they are willing to complain about 8 bucks and waiting too long to the point of being given 20 bucks! Stop eating fast food period and invest 8 bucks in to your life next time.
Its a private company so they can set their standards however they want and if you don't like it or don't agree, then you can simply find another burger joint or establishment to work for. This is America and if you own your own business, you should be able to set your own standards (of course within legal parameters).
These standards don't seem to violate any laws and as a matter of fact, these are the same exact standards in which they have become successful. If anyone speaks to any employee at In-N-Out to ask them how they are treated....You will see why it's a great company to work for.
Ever since the minimum wage hike in CA, big chains like McDonalds and other major corporate chains have increased their food items "drastically" while In-N-Out has only raised their prices by like around 18 cents to 25 cents. They are able to do that for what reasons? The same reasons mentioned above....high standards in service, high quality ingredients, EXTREMELY well trained staff, great pay, and all in all....THE CULTURE that In-N-Out has created for all of it's members and customers.
It starts at $15 and you don't have to work 8 hours shift you can work 5 or 6 and still get a meal (free). clothes pin are silver and they're very strict but they are all for the employees that's why when you come to a good In-N-Out location you get the best experience in the freshest food. Level 4 ❤️

In-N-Out doesn't have employees. They are ASSOCIATES. And it's not just a word, it's the attitude, from the top down and back up. The standards are there to make sure that everyone is working together.
Pretty much everyone nowadays calls their employees "associates" even though the word implies shared profits whereas 'employees' denotes, 'whatever the employer is willing to pay' them.

I am a person who knows what a dress code is for. I understand that In-N-Out does pay employee's more than the average wage. As I do. I expect professionalism and patience for the money as well.
Ive been to plenty of restaurants without a dress code, even worked in a few. It had no effect on the food while it did boost the morale of workers who werent forced to wear a stupid uniform. In N Out the only fast food place I’m eating, and the reason is the employees. They are well trained and friendly. Thank you guys!
When I worked at #6 in the early 1970’s they only hired guys. But they were true drive ins and a lot of heavy lifting was involved. They supplied the hat, shirt, pants, name tag (we used to put them on top of the dash in our cars to let any police know where we worked if stopped. They got 1/2 price food).and apron. All we had to get was the giant safety pin to hold up the white apron.
I think you take more pride in your work if you wear a uniform. Look how car companies turn out POS, they used to wear a uniform but not any longer, they take no pride in the work.
*You failed to mention that In-N-Out is family-owned and is not a franchise. That's one way they can keep them all operating the same without any location going rogue and doing their own things which often happens with franchise food places as seen on Undercover Boss. Sometimes those independent franchise owners think they know what's best.*
Thank you In N Out. I support you because you take care of your workers and your food is good.

The service is consistently excellent. I can’t remember having a negative experience.
We take for granted that we will always get excellent service from these young men and women.
I love this. Good for the employee, great for the customer. A recent visit to Panera where kids were fumbling orders and being rude sealed the deal .. I’ll never return. Cant wait to return to In n Out.
In and Out is selling a product with a time stamp that shouts, this is the way it was in the good old days. We drove just shy of 40 miles for an In and Out burger just today. The employees are always polite and enthusiastic. When you walk up to the register, you won't have the employee looking around, disinterested in you or even being on the job. The food will always be well put together and tasty. I truly believe that when us old timers finally die out, the next generations that grew up with this fast food chain will continue to support it even if, in their youth, they thought the dress code and behavior rules are too strict. Even the biggest outlaw among us appreciates being able to order a burger without having to put up with bullshit employees or marginal food.
Strict? Disney…hold my beer. 🍺
Yeah Disney is tougher than military standards lol. I had a few people when I lived in Florida that worked for Disney World tell me that the managers and supervisors would like spy on the workers and watch them for stuff like not smiling, not greeting guests fast enough, etc. I have been to both parks in thet states and just knowing the amount of people ordering food how crazy it has to be for the workers there and they make minimum wage at a multi-billion dollar company. I would never ever work for Disney. Only management makes decent money, I heard the character actors make decent money but I'm not even sure maybe they are considered a independent contractor or in a union?

I was gonna have an issue with this until you started listing all of the benefits that the employees have. At least the company is taking care of their employees, and paying them prett well, as they should. Most fast food chains don’t even do half of the stuff that In-N-Out is doing for their employees. Hell, a lot of them don’t even give you a free meal. They might give you a discount as an employee, but never an entirely free meal. You would think that a free meal is nothing to them, but I guess it is lol. The fact that they have a 401K and stuff for them is great.
It is because IN-N-OUT is a privately owned operation and opens very few locations, funds can be relocated to other locations. In chains, that is not the case, the chain is independently owned by the chain owner, who generally has to keep food costs under 30% of the income of the store, and labor costs under 30% of the store so that they can pay rent to the chain and their monthly franchise fee. Around 80% of funds are used in the chain for it to function and stay open, leaving 10%-15% to go towards a repair fund. The owner of the chain normally is only able to walk away with 5% of the chain's income, which is incredibly low for almost any business and normally equates to around $100,000 to $150,000 a year.
@@pancakeviking5321 inotherwords, franchising is actually a form of LEGAL EXTORSION. eh?

2:40 such a lie, it’s 1 Christmas present ( which is still cool), you only get a party if your store is in a good location and sells enough burgers. And there’s only 1 picnic a year. No “ paid trips “ and no “ vacations “ I worked at a store with 80 others and no one ever got that type of reward and we got $1.50 more than minimum wage to start ( luckily) you only get life insurance if you’re full time. And to be full time can take up to 5 years… still overall it was fun to work there.
In-N-Out can pay more to their employees and give benefits/bonuses/rewards while other fast-food chains do not for two reasons:
1) all In-N-Out locations are owned by the company verses most of the other fast-food chains are mostly (if not all) franchises. A franchisee pays rent and franchise fees to the fast-food companies which is a huge chunk of their gross sales.
2) Franchise-based fast-food chains have shareholders which are paid dividends. In-N-Out is privately owned, so no dividends.
Correct about 1), but I don't think you understand how 2) works.
In Texas, my store starts you off at $17.50 and every level upgrade (raise) is ¢25 (I think so).

For the pay and health insurance and other perks it is worth following strict dress codes. Prospective employees can always go down the road to the next burger hub and get far less and keep their individual trappings. The cleanliness of the staff and customer service is a big selling point. Also please notice half their asses are not hanging out, the pants are pulled up. Kidos to public health standards.
You sound just like corporate, like MY manager who also thinks that our GAS STATION has "Great benefits and health insurance and all kinds of other perks so you should be happy or leave!" Honestly any normal employee that works at these types of places never say a word about the "benefits" because at the end of the day most people don't even get them. I for one cannot afford the "benefits" that are offered to me, *even at the managerial level* , because I can't afford the 400+ dollars that those said "benefits" take out to cover for them on top of my rent and other utility bills, they're not fully covered perks.
You have that condescending Manager tone to your words, "Prospective employees can always go down the road to the next burger hub and get [ far less ] and keep their individual [trappings]", I'll be 100% honest with you, nobody likes it when you regard them as second class citizens just because they have some issues with a strict dress code. It isn't that serious. It's fast food, not a fine dining restaurant.
That's the issue with managers these days and why everybody is calling it quits in this industry, they're overzealous over the smallest of things and act like they're better than you because they're the head cheap chili fry maker. Overworked and underpaid, but the managers will always try to make it seem like there is no place better for you than there because of the "Great perks and benefits".
Maybe if everybody werent hounded for what they weren't doing, and appreciated for the good that they ARE doing, most of these places wouldn't be going through a staffing shortage currently

The workers don’t go there with the intent on permanent employment. They are all happy. The service is excellent.
When dealing with most other places yes many times there is an older group and often times they don’t look happy. Service is often sub par.
I’d rather have someone old give me my order than someone who is confused and think male and female are the same 😂
In n out was always a sought out place to work for when I was in high school. It was our Friday night spot. Oh the glory days
Yes. And. That's. Why. They. Offer. Dental. At. A. Young. Age. You. Don't. Need. Dental. Work. Per. Say. Thx
@@armandoruiz8795 they don't offer dental. Only to managers. Like all restaurants.
I am so glad that In n Out has appearance standards and no one has been able to pierce them especially here in California.....
Nice looking clean staff. I worked at Subway for years and always washed my whole uniform before going to work the next day while the rest of the staff hung up their dirty aprons in the kitchen and just kept wearing them day after day...super gross.
Imagine that. Getting paid abysmally low wages and judging your coworkers for not wasting their power to wash the uniform that belongs to the company. What is gross is the working conditions of a company that could easily do better.
@@t00bgazer but duh it makes them better then the rest of the staff because they have a CLEAN aprons .... plus it pads that clean apron bonus
I'm in my 80's, raised in Pasadena, Calif. and I have NEVER seen an in-out parking lot that was empty....ANYWHERE! C'mon people, there must be a reason for that! I still eat there whenever I can. Good food, decent prices, always clean...
Managers making $160,000 a year and employees making $13 an hour is wild.
Ah, standards. I remember when that was a thing. Keep up the great work In-N-Out!
People complaining that they have to wear a uniform while also complaining that the pay of their current job sucks...
Been there and done that with the whole fast food dress code gimmicks. I do enjoy the taste of a good In and Out burger and fries. 😋🍔🥤🍟
They have shitty food, like 5 things on the menu and their fries are ass. Don't know why this chain is sensationalized.
@@zekechum1969 "OH NO IN N OUT DOSENT HAVE ENOUGH FOOD ON THEIR MENU FOR MY FATASS"
The reason I love restaurants like In-N-Out, is they have a non-wavering standard. Other places can be good today and terrible tomorrow. You never know what you're going to get. Inconsistency for me destroys a restaurant. In-N-Out is always perfect and their employees are mature and care about the quality. The only other place that has been like this for me is Wendy's.
I've been told by a food delivery employee that when Wendy's tells the world that they never use frozen meat, it's true. The stores will reject meat that has even been stored with frozen stuff, and boxed produce that has even touched boxed meat. They actually have quality standards that are good for the customer BECAUSE they're non-wavering.
But hey, we live in a crappy world that loves the gray area. Nothing absolute because you can't skirt responsibility with absolutes.
It's this sort of discipline that emboldens good employees, one's more likely to provide better service to customers, and weeds out the one's who can't or won't adapt to the strict rules. It's similar to the military in that regard, and it's why In-N-Out has vastly better customer service than any other fast food restaurant.
Its not the "discipline" its the pay it allows for a better talent pool.
@@johndoe-ht6iu Sure it is. It's the definition of discipline:
noun
1.
the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior
@@AlphaMachina strict rules won't do any good if the pay is garbage. Anyone with any respect for their own time is going to leave a job that doesn't pay their bills and offers no future. In fact I would bet every cent I have and everything I own that if they doubled the pay for base workers but chucked their rule book all except for wear an in n out shirt and maintain good hygiene, that the service and food would only get better despite the lack of "discipline"
@@caimantroup6986 Nope. In-N-Out already starts at $13-$15/hour, has full benefits, even for part-time employees. You can't pay people $30/hour to make burgers. I make $35/hour managing a data center with 25 years of experience, several certifications and a degree. Get the f-ck out of here, ya moron.
@@AlphaMachina, California starting is $17. Texas is $15.
Dress code: a Smile is part of their uniform. Love the apron golden safety pins.
Half the people who commented here have probably never worked a day in their life. At my first job in 2009, I had to wear a hairnet in the kitchen till I cut my hair. It's part of life. You don't go to work to "express" yourself; you go there to fucking work and leave. If you think work is about feelings and ideals, you have a long, painful road ahead of you.
Especially at a place that serves food.
I mean if you’re spending half your life at work, then work IS part of your life.
Rigid dress code? My first job was at a McDonalds in 1976, I had longer hair then. The first thing I was told I had to get a hair cut, over the ears and off the collar. No alterations to the uniform and old style cash registers where you had to add the tab by hand then punch it into the register…no touch screen computer screen. The manager gave us a class on the proper folding of the to go bag, not just to hand the bag out. We also had to hand count back the change to the customer. The In/Out policy is just plan old school customer service base, nothing new…but very welcome
Yep, it creates a consistent experience for the customer.
Well done InNOut love the standards your customers LOVE IT!
It's hard to understand why anyone would have a problem like this. If I worked for a firm that required a dress code excluding jeans, are my "rights" that important? I work for a company, I am told what company policies dictate, I am told what my salary and perks are. I take the job and then complain.
02:18 Well there goes my future job.. "Clean shaven".. If I went without a beard, they'd be trying to age check me at the door.
The company I used to work for Walmart had very strict guidelines. Also, and they were having a lot of backlash. They were having a lot of problems with customers and we're. Employees complaining about their strict policies, so they changed it and now they're very much more relaxed let you color your hair, let you wear any piercings you want lets you wear, whatever color you want as long as you of clothing as long as you have your vest on so now there's no more. Strict policies Against this kind of thing, and I think In-N-Out Burger will end up getting there too.
C.E.O be like "look a my puppets" 💯
I disagree .
In this world people like you don’t believe in the word “no” or don’t like to follow rules .. probably live with your parents .
We need structure ..
Professionalism is a must
Strict rules are good for business
If the rewards worth it and satisfied, why not?
@@Lwrthnu64818good for business and good for personal discipline. Can’t run anything right without it.
I went to McDonald's and they had the whole freak show working all at once.
It took them 3 times to get my order right simply because I told them to eliminate the center bun on my BigMac. 😂
Man, I want to cuss, but I won't, but how hard is it to understand, "Cheeseburger with nothing but meat, cheese, and ketchup"? My grandson likes it that way, but that's apparently a little more complicated than Beef Wellington.
I appreciate the clean, neat look of a required uniform…
Then why don't you wear a uniform when you go there?
@@jessl1934 how moronic is that?
@@Katz1950 It appears that you do not appreciate the look of a uniform very much at all.
@@jessl1934 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wonderful to know. Thank you for sharing. Food and service is excellent.
Here in San Jose/Santa Clara Ca. they are starting at a pay of $19 per hour.
And one thing I noticed when the very 1st time last month I went to In-N-Out Burger, there was 1 built brand new next to where I live. It was quite packed, but I think it was due to the holidays. I'm not quite sure, but I can tell you that they have multiples upon multiples of people on staff, making sure that no one is overworked. Because in other fast food restaurants, they'll have much less staff trying to cut back on money going out. I know I've worked for fast food. And they will actually cut your hours, so they're not spending so much money, and then the people that they keep in. There are overworked and underpaid, and it seems like in an outburger isn't doing that at this time.
Great appearance rules! Thank you!!!!
Not a dude but having worked fast food in my younger age I found having an undercut made it so much easier to keep my hair up and easier than doing the marine gel/hair floss bun hack because your hat tends to loosen baby hairs especially on hot days behind the grill! Growing it out is any absolute pain in the butt, definitely living in a beanie over the winter! (I'm 45 now, this was when I was in my early 20's when alt shaved styles were frowned on in the small town I lived in)
I like that they mostly hire young people looking for their first job. These jobs were never supposed to support a family and it is screwed up that older people think this is a career that should have a living wage.
What do you know, male and female distinctions and dress codes. This is why I’ve supported this business for over 50 years.
White uniforms in a greasy fast food join. That is absolute hell for the workers who have to keep it clean.
Boooo hoooooo waaaaa waaaaa go home to mommy
In N out is the best fast food chain on the west coast by far!!! I can say with confidence, they have never got my order wrong!!
I was in the Sparks Nevada restaurant and ordered a protein style double double. I lifted it up to take a bite and there was a shiny blond hair from one side to the other, like a rainbow. I took it to the counter and the nice young man quickly ordered me another burger. With their hair so tight in those hats I was surprised to see this. I still love In N Out.
It’s not made for women tho?
Imagine being a grown adult and working at a fast food restaurant. Or imagine being a restaurant owner and making your employees follow strict rules that nobody gives a fuck about.
In other words, In-N-Out is the exact opposite of McDonalds in every way .
My ex-wife always tried to order the chicken burger. The divorce is finally final. 🎉
I use to work at in and out in California off Venice boulevard during hight school back then they was paying 10.50 per hour
I was leaving Vegas and heading back to California and stopped at a In n Out in Barstow Ca. That was the best location I have been to.
Moving from a cesspool to another cesspool is crazy 💀
To be honest, I think most dress code rules are a tad bit silly. Yes, it's good to look professional at the setting you work at, but at the end of the day, will how you dress really impact how things get done?
true but, in n out STRIVES for presentation. everything about the company is cleanliness. that goes for their employees as well.. having a clean appearance compliments the presentation of the company.
Yes how you dress does have some impact how things gets done because it effects the workers mindset. Just like people wear different things give them different feelings for the situation.
The guy at the local Papa Murphy's had a real cool uniform when I picked up my pizza. Papa Murphy's baseball gap, NASCAR racing t-shirt, & a trucker's chain drive wallet in his back pocket. Did not affect his pizza making ability at all, his pizza actually tasted great.
In-N-Out and Chick-fil-A are the best in the fast food game.
Company is waiting for a law suit
Lol I just nearly even watch the video and that’s all I needed to know !
Unfortunately.people are sue happy. So lame.
