Just gonna write a little update here... Nvidia has just released the 555.99 Graphics Driver which adds explicit sync support and thus better Wayland improvements. I've heard of some issues with the Kwin window manager from others users but I'm not sure myself. I'm still running the previous version under X11. Should you choose to install this driver you can skip installing the X11 portion of the video and continue on as normal. If SteamVR throws and error I'm not entirely sure how to fix it.
There are some application that don't know what to do when explicit sync exist on the compositor (KDE 6.1 and above) but using 6.0 and 555 still gives you a flicker free desktop and no issues with firefox and such, hopefully it will be resolved before the release of 6.1
I've tried VR on an unstable branch of nixos with beta nvidia drivers (560.31.02 version) with kde on wayland, and it works good enough in terms of framerate, but I didn't test for long due to other issues. I'm using ALVR, and their workaround for sound doesn't work for me, and I'm kinda lazy to research, what is the exact reason for it.
Thank you so much for bringing ease of access and awareness to people that are in the VR community, but do not know much about Linux. It is people like you that help to push the Linux desktop forward. Thank you for the great video, You just earned a new subscriber.
I actually already know all of this, just wanted to know how Linux support was in 2024 since Win10 is dying next year. I stayed however because watching you explain all of it is honestly so wholesome and relaxing. So much so that I actually subscribed! Excited to see more from ya, especially if it's Linux or VR related. Also, you're cute! :p
Thank you for this! This is going to be my reference material for when I test drive the new Nobara 40 in a little bit. (last one I used was 38) I'll let you know how it went. Hopefully all works well. :3
UPDATE: Okay I got it working!..eventually! On Nobara 40, Current Nvidia Driver version being 555.58.22. I installed KDE Plasma X11 and used it as the environment just like in this video. So I'm running an Original HTC Vive, OG Vive Lighthouses, and OG Vive Wands. Hooking it up Nobara immediately saw the Bluetooth from the Vive’s link. Installing Normal Steam VR once acted like it wanted to work and then didn't giving me tons of errors and such. Switched to Beta. Same. Did this like 4 times and eventually the current non-beta one decided to work. Did the room setup and Steam Home Environments worked perfectly. Non-Steam and indie VR Games that in Windows 10 work outside of Steam as a non steam games don’t work for me even when they are added in Steam as a non-steam and VR only game in Steam’s interface. I’ll be playing around with that more in the future. For anyone who needs to know the hardware I’m using: Gigabyte B450M-DS3H AM4 Socket Motherboard, AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6-Core CPU, 32GB DDR4 3200mhz Kllisre Ram, EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 SC 8GB. As a side note this works on Plasma with Wayland as of recently but it’s so much smoother Works wayyyy better on Plasma X11. I just installed Envision to get Monado to work but I can’t build a profile and there’s like no information actually showing how to get that to work. Just Miles of text basically saying “it can work” XD
I didn't even know Proton works for VR! I keep being amazed by how well Gaming works on Linux now. Did you exclude AMD GPUs because you don't own one, or is there some other reason? I won't buy anything from NVIDIA till they figure out how to work together with the open source community.
Yes! I excluded AMD GPUs simply because I don't own one... As far as I know, the setup with AMD is near identical minus signing the Nvidia driver and switching over from Nouveau
The 555 driver pretty much fixed wayland on nvidia, at least on arch also I got alvr working inside flatpaked steam using the portable release and adding it as a non-steam game, works pretty well it just has a separate script for audio
My SteamVR on KDE/Arch/X11 is totally trashed now, "choose an application to open vr-monitor" like I shouldn't need another program to click options in the steamVR dialog box. It's pooched for now and the Linux branch does not exist anymore under "Betas"
This seems to be a Steam Issue and I've run into the *exact* same thing. I've been browsing Reddit threads for days on end and I have not yet found a fix. Glad to know that this isn't just a Fedora problem.
In the first draft of this video I planned on talking about ALVR more extensively and how to use it. But when I saw the *basic* tutorials were super long I was like "Yeahhhhh maybe another day..."
One thing I don't get is Steam Link VR not being available natively on Linux. If ALVR could get the Quest and Pico to work on Linux, I know Valve is full capable of doing the same and even doing it better
Just randomly saw this video, and it looks really well made! For me, I'm in Ubuntu user and I'm wondering if it is possible to use my meta quest 2 headset instant VR on Ubuntu. If I can do that, I can finally cut ties with Microsoft Windows because currently I dual boot Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with Windows 11 24H2
You *can* using a piece of software called ALVR but I have zero experience with it and from what I've heard, it's fairly complex. I do own a Quest Pro and I plan on making an attempt at getting it to work. Depending on how it plays out I may make another video on getting ALVR to work.
You were talking about wayland issues, now we have the nvidia 555 driver which fixes most of those issues by adding explicit sync support. It's not in the repos yet, so you have to use the run file to install the drivers, but they work amazingly, and fix almost all the issues with nvidia and wayland.
I did see the new driver! I plan on testing it once it's pushed to Fedora and if it fixes the SteamVR issue, then I'll make an updated video. I didn't mention this in the video, but SteamVR can't connect to the Window Manager when running in Wayland. I'm not entirely sure if this happens on an AMD GPU (as I don't own one) but I've heard of general SteamVR issues with Wayland.
Hi, I'm trying to get my Quest 2 to work on Linux Kubuntu, and I'm having a hard time setting it up. First, my SteamVR won’t open. It says it's running, but it doesn't actually launch, and an error message pops up saying: "SteamVR setup is incomplete, some features might be missing. See Steam client logs folder for details." I'm using the Flathub version of Steam, by the way-I'm not sure if that has something to do with it. Also, when I download ALVR, it won't open SteamVR and says the path is not found.
@@evcasas4970 I use a 3080-Ti personally but a 1080-Ti is a good option too. Also, graphics quality with ALVR is tied to your WiFi speed so make sure you’re on the 5ghz band

Also anyone reading this don't bother bypassing to Windows 11 according to Microsoft they're making it IMPOSSIBLE for you to bypass to 24h2 it's getting a lot worse and this is gonna be the downfall of Microsoft for sure.
The big (unfortunate) thing with Linux is that a lot of companies don't want to support FOSS. They like to have their own little environment. We can see that plain as day with the macOS and Windows has had such a stronghold since the 90s that moving off of it is proving to be VERY difficult. And it doesn't help that the consumer install base of Linux is negligible in the grand scheme of consumer electronics. I guess Microsoft gets some bonus points for incorporating the Ubuntu Subsystem on top of the NT Kernel. But with modern tools like WINE and Proton, migrating to Linux is becoming easier and easier. I've been daily driving Fedora Linux for months now and I've barely missed Windows. I really only boot it up to access Adobe Premier and FL Studio. That's really about it. But it's not necessarily in a state where the most casual Joe can switch to it full time. Sure we have distros like Mint who are trying to make the experience better all around. But Linux is still very much a "tinker" operating system.

Alvr is a pretty heavy beast, had to make a 20 minute long tutorial just to explain how to do it with how complex it is, if you can avoid it, do

There's probably a good reason why it doesn't work but I'm on board with this one. On paper it should work just fine
Will Intel Arc graphics work?
I'm not sure. It might
Good tutorial. Minor suggestion: let the settings screen linger a bit longer. Case in point steam compatibility toggle was gone in a blink of an eye
