So the new koi have arrived and settled into their new pond in my garden very well.
They have had a great effect on the other fish and brought the pond to life.

Great update, re the jaffa cake, I've read all the comments and it's divided the community. Hi Johnny the laurel has probably suffered a bit from the drought we had maybe put some mulch down to help roots stay damp and not dry out x

New koi look great and looks like they’ve settled in a treat. Jaffa cakes are definitely cake. If you leave cakes out for a few days they go hard and if you leave biscuits out they go soft(from a chefs point of view). Great to see you’re bouncing back and getting the koi buzz back.

Biscuits, but my misses said cakes 😂 Isa Showa, can’t go wrong, I have two. I garden for a living, try regularly watering, using the water from your tempest. It’s often a lack nitrogen that leads to a lighter green leaves.

My theory with Jaffa Cakes is, a normal cake left in the open air goes hard where as a biscuit left in the open air goes soft. Leave a jaffa cake out for a couple of days and see which way it goes? If it goes hard it's it's cake, if it goes softer it's a biscuit... Can't knock it till you've tried it..😉👍😄😄😄

get some good quality compost or manure and dig it in around the bottom of the bushes that will sort them out and there really should be a bed of earth beneath them that you can treat with a good fertilizer👍👍

I’ve never been able to stomach Jaffa cakes (Yes, they are cakes) orange jelly and sponge🤢🤮. Fish are looking good mate 👍😊. Why Jaffa Cakes are cakes, not biscuits?
Disputes can arise over the most seemingly trivial of things. One which perhaps took the biscuit - or not, as the case was proven - is that of the humble Jaffa Cake.
McVitie’s had been making Jaffa Cakes since 1927. But they were challenged for labelling their chocolate orange treats as ‘cakes’ in 1991 by Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise.
It was accepted under UK law that biscuits were a luxury item and the full VAT would be levied. But cakes, on the other hand, have been regarded as a staple food - so were zero-rated for the purposes of VAT.
Customs and Excise decided to rule Jaffa Cakes to be biscuits, partly covered in chocolate, and therefore standard-rate. But the cake manufacturers appealed against the decision and the matter went to court.
The arguments for Jaffa Cakes being a biscuit included: their size, as they were more like biscuits than cakes; packaging, as it was similar to biscuits; and marketing, as they were generally displayed for sale with biscuits rather than cakes. It was also put to the court that they were eaten as a snack, with the fingers, whereas a cake may be expected to be eaten with a fork.
But the key turning point was when McVitie’s QC highlighted how cakes harden when they go stale, biscuits go soggy. A Jaffa goes hard. The case was proven.
During the court battle between Mcvitie’s and Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise, Mcvitie’s baked a giant Jaffa Cake to prove that Jaffa cakes were really cakes and not biscuits.
It was a long and costly dispute, but McVities finally tasted sweet success and Jaffa Cakes were finally recognised as chocolate covered cakes.
Now the £1.19billion Jaffa Cakes made every year are free of the consumer tax.
This means those with a sweet tooth can more easily afford to have their Jaffa Cake and eat it.

I think I heard a few years ago about the Jaffa Cakes issue went to court I've it's status. Something to do with vat being paid at different amounts on cakes and biscuits. Something along those lines anyway. I would have to say they are cakes as it's like a kind of sponge with flavoured jelly and chocolate, whereas a biscuit generally will snap of crack apart. As for the laurel, it could be the soil is poorer, more compact or rocky. But certainly giving some feed will benefit them

Also the laurels would benefit from being in a proper bed rather than having grass around them. 100% the soil on the edge there is poor compared to further back. Dig out the turf give them a 2 foot bed and mulch it with 6x fertiliser and loam compost. The other issue on the very small ones could be dog p*ss. Being near the lamp post they could be getting a regular toxic shower. They don't like growing in grass though. 🙂👍

According to Google, Jaffa Cakes possess the same ingredients as a traditional sponge cake - egg, flour and sugar that's been aerated. I.e they are cakes. Either way, I bloody love them.
