    Best tutorial for this I found! Finally someone who addressed how to compensate for the narrow to wide fold up. I kept getting puckers. I hate to sew, but I still want my mending and alterations to look nice. I’ve shortened the sleeves on 5 of my hubby’s shirts. THANK YOU!

    Thank you so very much for this information. I have been trying to shorten a shirt for my husband, but I was very frustrated with the different circumferences after I cut the sleeve off. You cannot imagine how excited I am to head into my sewing room and finish this job. He will be so impressed with his new sleeves. Thank you again for this informative video.😀

    Thank you for this great tutorial! I'm in my American Legion post's Honor/ Color Guard and I have a men's shirt to wear made of linen....I always look wrinkly! 😔. Went to Goodwill today and found a nice men's long sleeve shirt that I want to shorten the sleeves. Your video is great! You addressed the the difference in the sleeve length and how to fix it! I think I can use that same technique to narrow the body of the shirt using my linen shirt as a template. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! 😎❤️

  • @imjazzi2
    @imjazzi2 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    A good tutorial with one small exception. The only length marker should be the fold line down the middle of the sleeve, not the underarm sleeve length. Once the fold and length from the shoulder is established, mark a perpendicular line from the fold across the sleeve using a t square, ignoring the length of the underarm sleeve. Doing it as in video can create a slanted sleeve hem, because every sleeve and armhole has a slightly different shape. (This is noticeable on the plaid shirt. ) Another thing to be aware of is that shortening a long sleeve, since you have to narrow the width for the hem allowance, may result in a sleeve too tight in the biceps if the long sleeve is not fairly loose on the wearer.

    Hello, thanks so much for your tutorial. I have been wondering how to do this for awhile now . Your directions are very clear and simple to follow. Would you also please consider showing the stitching and ironing parts as well ? I don't have a sewing machine but would appreciate seeing how it's done because I'd luke to get one eventually. And, hate to say it, but a lot of younger viewers have never used an iron. Thanks so much for your video ! ~~~Laura

      If you haven't a shirt to lay on top I would recommend wearing your shirt and figuring how long you want it on your arm and marking with chalk or pins. Do that on one side and use that measurement for the other sleeve.

    Emily, thank you for your tutorial. I'm stuck on 6:24 of your video. Because my sleeve is slanted such that the bottom fold extends past the shirt to the table. and the top of the fold slants into the shirt. I don't know if my description makes sense, but I don't know what I've done wrong. Your shirt at 6:24 shows the bottom fold laying inside the shirt sleeve, and I assume the top part of the fold extends beyond the shirt. Mine is the opposite. I've rechecked the measurements multiple times. The top 11 1/2" and the bottom 7". Is it okay to proceed with the slant as it is?
    Thank you for your help!!

    hi emily! if i wanted to make the sleeve just a little shorter (without using the guide of my origial shirt), how could I do that? would I just free-draw a curve ? thank you for the video!

    • @MrsGsSewingSpace
      @MrsGsSewingSpace  26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You can still use the shirt as your guide. Just lay your guide shirt where you want it to be on your long sleeve shirt and make your marks from there. You will have to free hand the curve but it should be pretty similar to the original tutorial.

    • @MrsGsSewingSpace

      You can but it depends on the fabric and the look that you are going for. Hemming your clothes keeps the fabric from fraying and keeps your clothes looking neat and tidy.

    Hello Mrs. G! I'm new to sewing and your video was the easiest one for me to understand so thank you! I was wondering if you could explain at 11:07-11:12 how did you make that part? I'm confused if you cut first, and then sewed it together? or did you sew first and then cut the excess off? I know you kind of explained something, but I'm unfamiliar with the words you used sorry! That step is confusing me and I'm not sure how to go from there. Thank you so much for your video and I can't wait to watch more of your videos to learn (:

    • @MrsGsSewingSpace
      @MrsGsSewingSpace  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just reviewed the clip. What I did was sew the seam first on my sewing machine. But because that would have left a raw edge I then went back over it and sewed along the line with my serger. My serger would then wrap the edges in thread so that they won't fray. Or as I stated there is a stitch on regular sewing machines that imitate a serger stitch called an overlock stitch. You can use that instead. I hope this helps and Thank you for watching my videos.

    In your video you said trimmed and overcast the seam. What does that mean? Did you trim before sewing or after,,

    • @MrsGsSewingSpace
      @MrsGsSewingSpace  ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually trim while in process. For example I will sew the seam line and then trim or serge edges as needed before rolling up and sewing the hems.

    This is great. I have a similar query. Let's say you want to make the short sleeves of your existing short sleeve shirt even shorter. In that case would there be any reason to restitch the lower seam?

    • @MrsGsSewingSpace

      Did you mean the under arm seam? I am confused, which seam did you not want to stitch?

    What if you don't have a short sleeve shirt as an example to make the curve? How do you know how much of a curve.

    • @MrsGsSewingSpace
      @MrsGsSewingSpace  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have to eyeball it. Start out making a small curve and adjust as needed until it looks like it should. I know that this is vague but I can't really explain it with words. But you can use the video as a reference as to how it should look.

      Do you mean a cuff?

    • @moniqueb5070
      @moniqueb5070 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. It’s an external fold that somehow has the raw edge of the hem in it. Like in this photo - tradewear.com.au/products/bisley-original-cotton-drill-shirt-short-sleeve-khaki-bs1433?variant=7671308255290&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5uvblJLr6wIVz34rCh1tBg0wEAQYECABEgKd9PD_BwE

      @MrsGsSewingSpace  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am sorry for responding so late, you got caught up in my spam filter. But you do the exact same thing as you would do in this video except you fold and sew on the outside of the sleeve instead of the inside. In this video you hem to the inside, on the shirt that you linked you just do the opposite. So you hem to the outside. Do you understand?

    • @moniqueb5070
      @moniqueb5070 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrsGsSewingSpace no. That is not how it’s done. There is no hem edge on the outside. The raw edge is IN that fold.

    • @MrsGsSewingSpace
      @MrsGsSewingSpace  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. You fold up the hem and the raw edge is tucked under just like in the video. The only difference is that instead if sewing it to the inside of the sleeve where you can't see it, you sew it to the outside where it can been seen. It becomes a style choice at that point.
