The MXR is just brilliant. It does that squishy MXR compressor thing. When you want that effect imparted on your tone and playing, there’s simply no better. Love these new tasty video formats - thanks!
Thanks for these comparisons. The Dyna Comp is my favorite compressor from back in the day, but I ended up buying the Dyna-Ssor from Jam's B Stock sale. Dammit, Dan. From one Tele guy to another, I love you so much, you glorious bastard.
Dan and Mick, is that a Roger Mayer RM 58 limiter on the top shelf in the back? If so, can you please use this in a future video? Perhaps you can use it in a video to discuss limiters VS compressors. The RM58 pedal is often cited as being some sort of magic holy grail but I’ve never actually seen it demonstrated or used in anyway to really explain why and if anyone can explain this pedal, or debunk the legend, TPS can. Thank you.
I like the sound of the Jam better for sure. It seemed fuller and had better harmonic response. Just dug the sound more, and it seemed to inspire your playing more. Nice! Hope this is a new series. I really like the short form comparison! Much love!
Having watched the last two episodes of 'Effector Du Jour' the reveal of 'Daniel Du Jour' came as a complete surprise... tonight Matthew... Great video leg-ends.
I swapped out the ThorpyFX Fat General for Jam Pedals Dyna-ssoR early this year. Love how squishy it can go, but you do lose some top end the more sustain you add. Very nice pedal still to sweeten things up!
I once bought a used Dyna-ssoR. I thought I already had the perfect compressor (Analogman CompROSSor), but it was cheap and I was curious. Well, I sold the Analogman pretty quickly after the JAM arrived.
The JAM is definitely more subtle in a “always on” setting and gives a great universal level. But, that DynaComp almost acts a faux gain with its nasty (good nasty, like nas-tay) compression. It’s always a winner in my book.
I think why some are having trouble hearing the difference is Dan is testing "in context" on a Tele. A deeper dive into them might pull out the subtle differences, but a compressor is a "transparent" effect. As in its usually more noticeable when it is missing than when in use
I had a (less old) dynaconp for a while. Was all fun and games until the strings went even slightly dull, then the squish really felt like it cost a lot of treble
The MXR is old and I would wonder if component degradation means more clean is coming through? It sounds louder to me. I wonder what it sounded like the day it was sold? Or if I'm off my rocker, because the age of caps and resistors doesn't matter at all?
You gents ever use AnalogMan’s Juicer? Obviously it’s a different flavor of compressor, but I love that pedal. Really smooths the notes out with a nice subtle sweetness added to the tone. I rarely hear anyone mention that pedal.
You can still get 70s early 80s dyna comps for insanely affordable prices if thats your thing. I bought a 1978 dyna for $100 CAD 15 years ago, and have listed it a couple times for the same price with no takers so it a really overlooked/under valued sound. I use an SP now live (cuz blend, power supply, active light, dont wanna break it) but vintage dynas have such a squishy crunchy feel
The Jam seems very polite, which could be a good thing for a lot of people. But the MXR just sounds gorgeous. It’s one of my favorite pedals. Mean and grouchy and hairy and wonderful lol
Dan, Thanks for the concise comparison video! I also have an MXR Dynacomp and occasionally I look to see if anything more modern can replace it. The Dynacomp takes a lot of gas over being "extreme", but that is needed when trying to get the classic sound on a 12-string. Do you have any opinion on the Jam Dinosaur for use on 12-string?
agreed, unfortunately. I definitely clicked this video hoping Jam would be close to a vintage MXR but it's not it. I like that it has a low noise floor but the tone is way too bright and sounds like any other modern compressor.
I love and I hate compressors. I've got a stacked Cali76 and a Keeley two knob kicking around - but they never last long on boards. The Jam sounds great though, so quiet!
I have a modern mxr dyna comp. Maybe 10 years old. I cannot stand the thing. Super super super crushes the signal. . I’ve never found a way to make it useful no matter how I set it. No idea what I’m doing wrong
I had one, it's an all time great for some applications but would be a terrible option for the MXR style country licks heavy squish. It's "transparent" and always on type of compression.
That was a bad video which is a surprise for you guys. Set the Dyna Comp to sound like the Dynassore or as close as possible by ear! Yes start with similar settings but only as apart point WTF.
Red is still very spesh......and Dyna Comp for the win......old Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer would arguably be even nicer with Red - just my 5 cents as a fellow Aussie
Forgive me throwing unrequested advice your way: You might be listening for a pitch or tonal related change, and that is not the primary change the compressor adds. Listen for the volume of the guitar. It goes flatter, meaning less punch on the pick attack, and less obvious die off of the volume. It flattens/levels the volume of each note or chord. If you have a compressor, max the compression and strum over and over while switching it on and off until your ear is trained to hear dynamics, then start turning the compression down until your ability to hear dynamics becomes refined.
Many times, a compressor doesn't make an obvious difference in the final sound. That's why compressors are so hard to demo! Normally, a guitarist has to put a lot of effort into making each note ring out clearly. This limits playing speed. You can't move to some other note or chord too quickly without compromising the sound of the previous note/chord. With a compressor, you find it's easier to switch around more quickly without wrecking the sound. So the difference is in the feel of it and how fluidly you can make changes.
So frustrating. I love the sound, but I hate the feel. I mean, when you play through these type of pedals it feels similar to walking through sticky mud. I can’t stand it! But it’s that sound… 🤔
I'm liking these "shorts" type of videos! Sometimes the longer videos seem to be just too verbose... Like how I pulled that big word out for the description??? That's sort of what I am talking about....less fat and more meat is what I am after generally speaking. Admittedly there is an entertainment value to it on occasion but not every time is it that way. I'd say a concise shorter version of say 30 minutes or less more often than not would be better IMHO.....
Me: What's the effector du jour?
Dan and Mick: It's the effect of the day.
Me: That sounds good. I'll have that.
Dyna-ssoRic moment 🦖 Ex-squish-it sounds 🦖
Well done Dan that was just how we like it . Would appreciate it if you and Mick keep this going .
More of these Effector Du Jours please!! Love the short format!!
The MXR is just brilliant. It does that squishy MXR compressor thing. When you want that effect imparted on your tone and playing, there’s simply no better. Love these new tasty video formats - thanks!
I am truly loving this new series. Keep it going, leg-ends!
Never realized how awesome your country chops are. Very nice demo. My Dynacomp never sounded as good as yours!
Love the squishy, gooeyness of the MXR!
Loving the effector du jour vids chaps. Dan, played this at 2x and it’s like listening to Albert Lee! Keep up the good work.
Thanks for these comparisons. The Dyna Comp is my favorite compressor from back in the day, but I ended up buying the Dyna-Ssor from Jam's B Stock sale. Dammit, Dan. From one Tele guy to another, I love you so much, you glorious bastard.
The Jam Dyna-ssor Sound so much more neutral !!! Love it
Woooooooooow. The difference is not only clear, but an important one. Thanks for this!
Have that same Dyna-Comp. It’s a keeper ❤️🤙
Dynacomp just has it in terms of A/B comparison. For someone who doesn’t gig much the quietness of the JAM makes it the winner for me.

Love this! Got the dyna-ssor and literally can’t take it off my board, so good! And before getting it I used to think that clean blend is a must…
I like the sound of the Jam better for sure. It seemed fuller and had better harmonic response. Just dug the sound more, and it seemed to inspire your playing more. Nice! Hope this is a new series. I really like the short form comparison! Much love!
Ok now this is an interesting video. Looking forward to watching
Having watched the last two episodes of 'Effector Du Jour' the reveal of 'Daniel Du Jour' came as a complete surprise... tonight Matthew... Great video leg-ends.
Agreed with Not being able to hear a commpressor ... its all feel and how they helpin the signal gain
Missed ya guys yesterday.
I swapped out the ThorpyFX Fat General for Jam Pedals Dyna-ssoR early this year. Love how squishy it can go, but you do lose some top end the more sustain you add. Very nice pedal still to sweeten things up!
I think I blushed when you mentioned a “spicier” top end..
I’ve actually been looking for a nice Dynacomp style compressor, and now I have my answer. Now to get some chorus and plate reverb…
Love the JAM!

Really Great Job Man.!❤❤❤
ahhh i missed good ol lovely red
Nice playin' Dan!
I think why some are having trouble hearing the difference is Dan is testing "in context" on a Tele.

That was as night and day a compressor comparison tonally as you’ll ever hear.
I need to spend some quality time with some compressors, the JHS Pulp'n'Peel is the only one I'd gotten along with. But the inbuilt Rat helps its case
Try the Diamond - Trust me. It's special.
Dynassor or airchild for a first in the chain compressor? Thanks
I had a (less old) dynaconp for a while. Was all fun and games until the strings went even slightly dull, then the squish really felt like it cost a lot of treble
Quick question - is the Dan Drive named after Dan? Our Dan, not the others.
The MXR is old and I would wonder if component degradation means more clean is coming through? It sounds louder to me. I wonder what it sounded like the day it was sold? Or if I'm off my rocker, because the age of caps and resistors doesn't matter at all?

JAM Pedals strikes again
Sure it's been suggested before but you guys NEED to get Jon and Alex from Everything Everything on the show!
What happened to the sg? I lost track.
The Jam seems very polite, which could be a good thing for a lot of people. But the MXR just sounds gorgeous. It’s one of my favorite pedals. Mean and grouchy and hairy and wonderful lol
This. It drives me insane that we can't have a modern recreation. Everyone misses the mark, this Jam pedal being yet another example
Hot licks Dan Du Jour!
The MXR sounded far nastier, more biting top end, to me at least. I preferred it for that reason
Dan,
Thanks for the concise comparison video! I also have an MXR Dynacomp and occasionally I look to see if anything more modern can replace it. Sounds great w my rickenbacker 620/12 but it's also the only comp I've ever used
@@PageandPlant4Life Which one? MXR or JAM?
To squish or not to squish that is the question 😂
MXR is its own thing…classic
agreed, unfortunately. I definitely clicked this video hoping Jam would be close to a vintage MXR but it's not it. I like that it has a low noise floor but the tone is way too bright and sounds like any other modern compressor.
I keep trying compressors thinking I need something more than the Dyna Comp. I do not. But the Jam is lovely and quiet, I admit-
Du Jour means seat belts. Du Jour means crash positions!
Great comparison, where was V.Q.C last night??? .
Internet busted again.
I love and I hate compressors. I've got a stacked Cali76 and a Keeley two knob kicking around - but they never last long on boards. The Jam sounds great though, so quiet!
That a special guitar man
I have a modern mxr dyna comp. Maybe 10 years old. I cannot stand the thing. Super super super crushes the signal. . I’ve never found a way to make it useful no matter how I set it. No idea what I’m doing wrong
Both good.
Challenge idea , 4 pedals each and each must pick one pedal brand 🙂
Would you say it's a Dinosaural Compmeister?
Nice
Where would the Analogman CompROSSor sit among these morsels?
I bought an mxr knockoff compressor and I can’t hear what it’s doing. Same thing here. Must be my ears.
Can't you feel it when you play? It limits the volume when you play hard and boosts it when you play soft.
@@AndreaAustoni Interesting... not really, tbh.
Jam is brilliant with their naming... aside from their pedals being awesome. Dyna-ssor, Delay Llama, Harmonious Monk...
As I get to have my own opinion, the JAM suits my preferences by a huge margin. Then again, I don't likely noisy squishy compressors
Daniel Du Jour! Mick Du Jour's brother?
I think this is a Meg and Jack White situation. They're not really brothers in real life. 🤓
Hahahahahaj!
But are Dan and Mick married?@@tanguydelooz2881
I kinda prefer the noise)
Danielle Du Jour!
Thorpyfx Fat General for me
I had one, it's an all time great for some applications but would be a terrible option for the MXR style country licks heavy squish. It's "transparent" and always on type of compression.
Thought this was going to be a dan episode I was right
👍🏿🤘

The old one sounds better over the tubes.
Red is still very spesh......and Dyna Comp for the win......old Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer would arguably be even nicer with Red - just my 5 cents as a fellow Aussie
I've never been able to hear the sound of a compressor, & I still can't. I'm sorry....
Don't apologise! But if you can't hear this we are confused.
Me too
The MXR is so obvious though

Why so many spaces open on your guitar stand Dan? Sell off a bunch of guitars to be able to get nicer ones?
no comparison --- tube echo much better
