I'm a multi-instrument musician (guitar, bass guitar, mandolin, keyboards), and in all the years I've been playing, I've never seen anything like this!😮 It's one thing to fake your way through stuff like this, but another to play well, *NON-STOP* for almost an hour and a half, and transition smoothly between most songs you played. Hell, I had to stop the video a couple times just to get something to eat and go to the bathroom!! Just a couple hours ago, I got one of your videos in my recommended stuff, and I watched that, and then subscribed and proceeded to watch another 2 hours worth of your stuff. I can't even remember what I *originally* came on YT to look for... You're freakin' amazing Lara!💖🎵🎶🎵😁👍👍
I agree on most things, but not about the "smooth transisions". Yes there were transisions, it wasnt a jaring cut or a pause, but you could always hear very clearly when she switched piece, even if you hadnt heared any of the pieces before, therefore I woudnt call it smooth transisions.

@@ltloxa1159 Yeah, but you're SUPPOSED to know when it's a new song because they all sound very different. By smooth transition, he means that Lara didn't stutter for most transitions in between songs and just easily shifted from one piece to another which is really hard to do on short notice. It can still be a "smooth transition" and still what exactly when the song shifts. As long as it isn't jarring to hear, then it can be considered a smooth transition, because it's much harder than people think, especially to non-musicians looking at it.
It's still not a smooth transision, what you said just explained that it isn't really ment to be smooth, which I agree with. A smooth transision doesen't mean the same as a good transision or a transision that fills the purpose.

2. She knows the melodies
3. She is visualizing and recall the new melody
4. She is transposing the next melody into a key at least tangential to the current key (relative minor, dominant, or some other wizardry I don't understand)
5. She has to figure out what chords are going to fit under that melody
6. She is keeping the previous melody going during all of that
7. She makes a perfect transition from one song to the next...
How is this something that a human being is capable of doing!?!?!?!!

if youve been playing an instrument since you were young its easy to remember songs you’ve played (especially if you enjoy them). its the transitions and turning them all into an hour long medley thats the most impressive part

Not even professional musicians have such a long repertoire. Not because learning pieces takes too long (waltzes etc can be learned in a day or three). but remembering all of the harmonies and melodies and what not. You'd probably need absolute pitch.

There are literally piano sonatas that are several hours long, which far exceeds this both in terms of musical and technical complexity. In fact, I would say the majority of professional piano-solo recitals are roughly about an hour in length, if not a bit longer and far more difficult to play.
This is still extremely impressive but for a completely different reason. Had this only been a completely memorized performance it would be moderately impressive. Her ability to adapt, improvise and be this consistent when improvising is what is impressive to me.

Setting aside everything else, this is also an impressive feat of stamina. Playing the piano doesn't seem like an especially strenuous activity on the outside, but you WORK those forearms.

People always say peak performance is that guy rock climbing without ropes, but I think this is better.
@@nickjunes I tend to lean more towards Alex Honnalds achievements. While this ability is incredible, it is also achievable by anyone with 10+ years on the piano and perfect pitch. Alex Honnalds is the first and very well likely be the last human to ever free solo El Capitan. It's actually unbelievable someone was able to do it period.
@@mochmaster45 well climbing a mountain is way deadlier. The least amount of people will live. Climbing some mountains is deadlier than suicide attempts. For sure he will most likely be the only one achieving it.
@@mochmaster45 We actually don't know how many people could do what Alex did because most people don't want to die falling off a rock. Putting yourself into a dangerous situation so you can get out of it isn't really an achievement at all in my opinion. There are plenty of climbers who are as good or better than Alex Honnalds, but aren't making the rest of the world suffer through them risking their lives. I feel bad for his mother.

Oh my gawd, why did I find your comment a year later. Yes! The Dooo's playing os incredible! When I stumbled upon his channel I knew right from the start that he is a well player... but! After watching some excerpts taken from his live stream I believe, with Herman Li, it just hit me. Dooo is an outstanding hell of a player! I admire him.
I like watching his gameplay videos, but mostly I Look for the musical parts, sińce it's pure gold, and I mean his real songs as well as memes haha. His humor is well combined with his sense of music in my opinion. Anyway, Lara and Dooo collab would be fun to watch (and hear!)!

I'm pretty sure for them to take action it has to be over a certain time limit. Up to 30 seconds I believe. Which is why some songs sample other songs without needing permission.
As a content creator, I must inform that the "time limit" rule is non existent.
However, under fair use regulation, this counts as a cover, of a particular work, or set of works. Therefore, it is deemed as a legal act, and cannot be prosecuted against.

I've been playing piano for 18 years now. I have seen tens of thousands of TH-cam covers and tutorials and play-throughs of piano songs and have never ONCE been inclined to comment. Having played piano daily for the past 28 years (since I was 4) and being a game music pianist myself, I can tell you that this performance is way beyond amazing. Being able to do this requires an enormous talent and years of hard hard work. Probably one of the most impressive videos I've seen on youtube.

Been fairly steadily coming back to this since I first found it in 2018. I work some crazy hours during tax season (90+ a week) and this is one of my favorite things to have playing in the background. It's fun, soothing, inspiring, and doesn't hover for too long just really driving the pace and progression, especially good for work. It really is a thing of wonder.

Nope, this is impressive regardless of which way you look at it. There is subtlety here that most people won't pick up on, even people that play the piano.
1st layer of impressive: she knows all of these melodies and can play them from memory at the drop of a hat
2nd layer of impressive: it's very likely that she's never explicitly played many/most of these on the piano before, but she Solfeges like a fucking champ and can easily translate a melodic memory to her fingers
3rd layer of impressive: she's able to use harmonic knowledge to come up with chords on the fly, again for the majority of these melodies she's likely never seen sheet music so she's taking the arpeggiations present in the melody and just figuring out chords according to harmonic conventions, which own it's own isn't terribly impressive buuuuuuut~
4th layer of impressive: her left hand isn't just doing block chords, she's inverting and arpeggiating chords to make the bits more interesting
5th layer of impressive: she is transposing these melodies, on-the-fly, into keys that make them more suitable for the arrangement.
So to summarize - plenty of people can play the Green Hill Zone theme and the Forrest Gump theme on the piano, but can they:
Perform the melody from solfege memory without necessarily having ever seen those notes on a page
Harmonize those melodies without never necessarily having seen the chord symbols or sheet music
Transpose those melodies into keys that compliment one another, so you aren't flying across the circle of fifths with every transition and creating a very jarring patchwork
Do it over and over again with dozens of melodies for a continuous 90 minutes

I just want to say that apart from the 4th layer thing, I noticed all of this. She's playing the piano as if it's part of her body. In the way I can hum any tune I've heard before, improvise, etc with my vocal cords she's doing the same thing... but on the piano.

This is actually one of the most impressive things I have seen, to be able to take in requests from comments and then to seamlessly transition to the different songs from MEMORY... I do not usually comment on anything, but this deserves a comment, subscription like and a follow on twitch!
The transitions seem so smooth because she keeps the same key for all the songs. She doesn't play them in their original keys. Many very talented musicians can replicate simple songs on the spot without ever learning them. It still takes tremendous amount of practice thought. This is on a whole other level, she very talented and amazing at what she does. Would love to see some original work from her.
There's a list on google docs of all the songs she knows. Its like 200 or something. And they are all in the key of C. now, if people were suggesting songs AND keys, and she was transposing everything in real time ... my mind would be blown :D and we would get some incredible emotional feels from those key changes
I wanted to only watch like 5 minutes of this to see if it was any good and I got sucked in. I watched the entire thing and subscribed as soon as I got out of the kinda trance I was in. You’re incredibly talented.

I play around eight instruments, most at an advanced level. I'm a mixing engineer with a pretty large home studio. I've seen, heard and worked with all kinds of great talent over the last 40 years but this is on a whole different level. I know a few hundred songs myself, but could I play them without sheets in requested order without so much as a brief pause to wrap my head around the tune with so much fluidity?Nope. Not even close. Again, a whole new level of talent. And serious admiration from me - the guy who is rarely impressed.
I'm absolutely stunned by her and her play as well, and I could listen to this for far longer than 1 1/2 hours ;) But I think one of the reasons the notes come to her so fluently is because when she learns a new piece, she just listens to it and plays freely out of her head, without having to memorize pages of notes. Of course that is incredible as well, considering the amount of songs she learns and memorizes this way, and I guess she also gets a song's notes sometimes. All in all, this is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen and I am happy TH-cam suggested this video instead of some German teenage hipster to me :)
It was great. Assuming she has perfect pitch (and even more kudos if she doesn't), churning out the notes can kind of happen and flow by itself if you know how a tune goes in your head, but the great repertoire, recall and seamless stitching, plus reading the feed etc. as well is really impressive. Very enjoyable. 👍

@@cameronleesimpson5742 It was never proven that this exists. She's playing piano for some years alredy and probably she can play with her ear. That's an ability only a few pianists own. Also you have a muscle memory, so you know in your subconscious what to play next. After all, the most important thing is to play music with passion. You can play it to impress someone but it shouldn't be the reason why you play. Music is dynamic, free and full of emotions, people who don't understand that might still play "perfect" (pressing the right keys) but it sounds cold.

No matter what some say, this takes talent not just hard practice. She definitely have absolute hearing first of all which is something you are born with and it can be a pain in the ass for some to have. Then combine that with a real good structuring of the songs beforehand in her head also something from birth how her brain works. And then memorizing all this to some extent is crazy and also require her head to work a certain way or at least not been polluted by wrong inputs while growning up. Most likely a safe home and great parents have also been a big help to maintain this level of dedication and focus.
I can maybe hold 8-10 pieces of music in memory if I practice them constantly. We talking full pieces now so this is different. But still remembering this much from like 100's of songs is damn special and something I could only dream of. You were made to sit at the piano and I can only congratulate you on that lovely gift and freedom you aquired on your instrument. It’s every musicians dream to reach that freedom and you are there.

I love your sentiments. If your'e interested, perfect pitch isn't something you're either born with or not, it's something that can be developed at a very young age if the child is regularly exposed to sufficiently complex and unpredictable chord changes. Babies and toddlers focus most of their mental development on deciphering the sounds going on around them in order to learn how to talk, so they're machines when it comes to cataloging and figuring out complex and unpredictable sounds. If you hijack that process and play lots of classical music and jazz to the child all the time, and explain to them what the notes and chords are called as they're hearing them, you will develop perfect pitch in that child. It actually has nothing to do with being gifted and everything to do with parenting. Here's are some videos where this is explained in more detail by a guy who's raised two children who are as musically "gifted" as it's really possible to be, so he knows what he's talking about! Everytime I read a comment like this I get discouraged from learning how to play the piano, maybe it's too late for a 21 year old like me who probably doesn't have the right genetics :/
Cristian Diaz No no don't get discouraged, I started at age 21 myself and you can become great and compose music, and relative pitch you can practice and it will come naturally with time also when you heard and played thousands of songs. It’s just that no matter what people say, everyone can't be Lara she is very gifted. That doesn't mean you should give up and not play at all, I wrote a more extended comment on another piano song about this that is more indepth and explain what I mean and why you should play at any age. I will try find it and repost it here or link it somehow. Just saying that never postpone your dreams because there is someone better than you. Then you should never get a girlfriend because there is a better looking guy or never buy a car because someone already drives a lamborghini etc. This is your journey so fuck everyone else and enjoy it, biggest enemy to success will be yourself. Your doubts, your lack of focus and your wasted time watching others that are great instead of practicing yourself and figuring out how far you could go.

This might be a dumb question, but, how does she do this?
I've been playing the piano for a while now and the pieces I practice I can play well, but does she just improvise all of these melodies on the spot, or has she learned them all before once? I could never play a piece without knowing the notes beforehand. Or is it something that comes along after a lot of practice and experience? Surely it is something you need (near) perfect pitch for. (which I don't have) This stuff blows my mind.
Guido Anselmi it's not that difficult to remember like 10 seconds of a piece especially if it's the memorable section of it. for an hour 25 tho I'm not sure myself.

I know that isnt very difficult, but how does she know what notes to play? I wouldnt know w/o looking it up.
Once you know what sound produces each note, and the melody of each song, your mind just manages to pull all the pieces together. Also its easier if you have Absolute pitch.
To do the medley right and have smooth transition you need a good knowledge of sound (absolute pitch will help a lot but is not necessary) she also have a crazy good memory. My girlfriend is like that with books so it's quite possible to have it for music. Notice how Lara doesn't hesitate on any parts, it's not improvised she know those parts, all of them O.O . You can be a super good pianist and never be able to do that, why does this have only 1 000 000 views?
One thing that likely helps her a lot is that she plays these songs for at least 90 minutes plus four times a week. So that's a lot of practice time to work them up. And has been doing this sort of thing for over a year.

I don't usually have the patience to listen to more than 10 minutes of instrumental music before I feel the need for something else. This has been recommended by youtube, though I've never watched something like it before. Ever. Figured I listen to a bit and that's it. Now I wish I'd been there that day watching you live... 85 minutes of hearing you seamlessly shift gears and burn songs like high octane jet fuel is far from enough! Even without knowing all the songs! It's not your large library of songs that is impressive, that's a must, but your transitions are point blank beautiful. Like the wind sculpting the landscape it passes over... You though youtube would ban it or at least mute it with all those soundtracks, yet... so far... it's being recommended and has surpassed half a million views in about 50 days. "Impressive" is the word that comes to mind and so many have used it. I find it to be an understatement. Simply beautiful. It's all I can really say...

One reason it hasn't been banned is because most of the songs are about 15 seconds give or take so bots that listen for songs can't find them. also I'm fairly sure it's legal to play clipits of songs.
