A number of people have asked for an Emulator III power supply, so I've made one! synthchaser.com/product/synthchaser-e-mu-emulator-iii-eiii-replacement-power-supply-100-240vac/
Yay! This might just have me confident enough to start using my EII live. Love that even a ding dong like me can figure this one out. I'll take a look at the LED replacement, though I imagine the installation isn't as simple as this one is.
I'm about to make a power supply for my alesis fusion for similar reasons. They are a known failure point, are inefficient and were bought in ready made. I've managed to fix and slightly modify the existing one but i think I'm going to replace it with a pico atx supply and a 12v power adapter housed internally. This will do away with the fan to make it silent alongside the ssd. The only hard part is the power loom is soldered to the supply so there's no easy solution. It's either solder it or make a new loom. I may need to add a boost converter for the lcd too as IIRC it's -16v. No small task, but it will be much nicer silent.
@@12bitizthewaytogo92 I assume you mean analog POST regulation, and no, it doesn't have it, and neither did the original. Any requisite safety caps are encapsulated in the pre-fab modules. You can read the datasheet for the various safety features found in the modules.
Is there a difference between the power supply of a 'normal' Emulator II and an Emulator II+HD? Does this power supply also work with an Emulator II+HD?
Pretty sure the power supply is the weakest link on everything E-mu. All the romplers start to look like the screen is going out but it's usually just the power supply. I just had to put a new power supply in a Planet Phatt, and I have two Proteus/3s that need one. But I guess an E-mu is kinda like a 30-year-old server from a datacenter, so it's OK if they need a new power supply. I got a Proteus 2000 that actually needed a new encoder AND new cursor buttons. That makes me pretty happy that it was actually used, even if there are no signs that the guy ever edited a single preset. 😂 I wonder if Syntaur knows about these? They'd probably put them on the site. They have a ton of old E-mu parts. But not many power supplies!
Great video! Any chance you can make a video on an known emulator 2 issue. Sometimes the emu wont boot and is stuck in a freeze. Display shows "version 3.1" and it stays like that when trying to boot. Also when using USB drive, it just boots to "003/077" and stay like that. Whats strange, memory test i doable and after the memory says "memory ok" the emu still freezes in the boot display... PSU is new and works, memory say ok so what could be the issue?

I really like your trend of creating replacement works of art to keep these synths alive.
You are an absolute boss with these repairs!
FAAAN-TASTIC Man!!! That's a great little repair 🙂
As an EE and avid synth fanatic I look forward to your knowledgeable and entertaining videos. Thank you!
Very slick. I use those mean well power supply modules for all sorts of projects.

Great work bro. Another one saved...
Awesome! I’m going to have to dig the Emulator out again 😂
Just bought one :)
Thank you very much!

The good: Synthchaser put out a new video! Yahoo!
The Bad: It is only 4min long.
😢 Now I have to wait for the next one.
Superb work…. Please do one for the Emulator Iii next ?
Hi. The PSU works with European 220V too?
Yes, it will. He clearly stated this in the beginning of the video.
Yes, it does. The old voltage select switch gets disconnected and the new supply automatically works with 100-240V with no configuration needed.
nice what about for an EIII as well? (not the XP)
Absolutely, if I can get my hands on one of them to measure & test with, I'd love to. Anyone local to me who's got one, please hit me up.
@@Synthchaser im not local but could send you the power supply would that work or do you need the whole unit?

@@Synthchaser nice but this doesnt have safety caps and analog pre regulation correct?

The suppy is the same, and this will work. It has enough current capacitor for the hard drive.
Awesome
IS that Compatible version for HDD version ? I remember that PSU HDD more bigger
Yes, it is.
@@Synthchaser I see a big 45 5 IRM from Mean Well, looks good

Check the calibration on the pitch and mod wheel it's quite possible it drifted out and damaged the DAC chip.
It happened to me.
I have some nice mods for the Emulator II you would probably interested in.
