Standing in line were mostly black mothers with their daughters. I listened as all the moms were explaining to the girls about the breakthrough of Stephanie Mills in the Wiz on Broadway 20 year earlier. Stephanie and The Wiz were an important part of their cultural heritage.
She played Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz on Broadway but lost out to Diana Ross for the lead role of The Wiz which starred her boyfriend at the time Michael Jackson. She is pure class and always speaks very well of MJ.

It be a lost if Diana and Stephanie both auditioned and the directors and etc came together and were like okay which of these girls should get the role of Dorothy and they agreed on Diana. But it didn’t happen like that instead I don’t think either of them auditioned, Stephanie was heavily considered because the Broadway show was highly popular which gave her a lot of publicity and popularity but when Diana found out who was in charge of the movie which was her at the time lover she was able to go around his back and slip her way into the role with her massive star power. I still think Diana did an amazing job as Dorothy but of course I feel Stephanie should have had the role but I mean who cares because it didn’t stop her it just elevated her and now she’s a award winning singer, actress and music legend!!
