Yes, it sure is. In high school. I was drawing like this on a daily basis, but over the past thirty years, I haven't. Watching this video is an inspiration for me to get back to my drawing board. This is an amazing tutorial!
1:14:40 "I worry that this is going to be ponderous to watch" It's the opposite. How often do we get to see a professional work slowly from the beginning, while explaining their thought process? These videos are both great for learning and for relaxing. Drawing ASMR
I'm amazed at what a humble artist this man is. Knowing and recognizing his limitations. And showing love and respect towards his fellow artists. There should be more artists like him.
20:24: " if you're watching this, thank you! Thank you very, very much!" NO, sir, thank YOU very much for letting us being part of your process! THIS is an honor for us!
“Rambling videos are not what everyone wants to see.” With respect, you’re wrong, man. These kinds of videos always feel like a view into the process. I enjoy hearing your thoughts and feel like I get to hang out with you a little bit. You want to post one or two hour videos of a drawing or commission, I’m your huckleberry. 🤙🏻😃
Kim Jung Gi is a superhuman for sure but, please don't discount yourself at all. You are an absolute master in your own right. Awesome work on the channel so far and thank you for inspiring me to keep drawing.
bit late, but I feel like a lot of people in the comments are on the same wavelength here. This video is absolute gold. watching your whole process from start to finish is really helpful for me because I'm quite new to inking, and seeing you be so calm after dropping that massive blob of ink on your page honestly made me rethink whether my screwups are really as unsalvageable as I've always thought them to be. Your narration is great too, just packed with so much valuable information. Thank you for uploading this video, I really hope you get to record and upload more!
Since been on Lockdown here in South Africa because of covid-19. TH-cam art tutorial videos started to bore me and then my friend told me that "David Finch is back" I didn't believe her and now here I am and I'm loving every second of watching my favourite artist do his thing.
These are the kind of videos that I love. Basically a podcast but something visually informative, you've got some lil' bits of wisdom dropped throughout, gives me time to realize and ingest them a bit. Such a good thing to have on while practicing drawing. Thanks.
It's a relief to see you pros having to redo some parts because it didn't work the first time around. It makes me feel more inspired to get a pencil. Especially considering the drawing turned out amazing
You draw the way I picture Batman in my head. Love your insights and hearing your process. It is a privilege to be able to watch professionals do their thing..what a great day and age we live in. Thanks David and stay safe.
This long-format real-time video is exactly what I want so see. Thanks for doing this Dave. I hope to look back years from now and see hundreds of these narrative videos.
David, when I was a young man I taught myself to play guitar. I would often ask my friends who were more skillful to show me chords and techniques. I remember a few who would simply refuse, rather hoarding their knowledge for reasons I could not fathom. I simply remember being crushed. You have no idea how amazingly grateful we who are aspiring to learn to draw appreciate your willingness to spend time letting us look over your shoulder. When I look at your finished work it's that much more amazing to know that you sometimes "struggle" during the process, as struggling is what we beginners do 90% of the time. Thank you so much. Your drawings are that much more amazing to behold having watched the entire process. Actually, you better be careful; I might start thinking I can actually learn how to draw.
A lot of people keep their knowledge and skills to themselves because they want to remain better than everyone else but don’t know that if you help someone out you feel so much better than keeping your skill to yourself you could make a friend that has something in common with you
It's so humbling to hear someone who is legitimately one of the best artists in the world be so humble in talking about his own limitations. It's weirdly inspiring!!
damn, these videos are crazy. The amount of obscure information you're throwing out is epic. Details on exact papers, inks, tools etc are all bits of information you just can't easily find anywhere else. Thank you for these!
These are the best, realistic comic drawing experiences and practical tutorials on youtube. Thank you SO MUCH! Seeing the struggles that we all have is so encouraging and helps with figuring out the techniques. Please keep the mistakes coming, these are the best teachers
Thank you! I was there two months ago, but I'm looking forward to getting back. Mexico City is so much fun, and everyone I've met has been really great.
I learn the most from watching something like this, not speed up and you describing the process as you go. It's so enjoyable to watch. I would love more things like this on the channel.
This is the best video ever. I bought all of your Gnomon videos years ago, and they taught me so much, it blew my mind. Now, getting to watch you on TH-cam is like Christmas every day.
I’d watch every minute of every hour of any of these ‘rambling’ videos u decide to put out. It’s awesome hearing u talk about struggling with things. Seeing all of your work you’d never know it...ur one of my favorite comic artists, nice knowing I can actually relate with u. The way u finish off a drawing is impressive. Good stuff!
Each artist has their own technique and style. Mr. David Finch’s rendering is INSANELY amazing. I’m an illustrator, and have full confidence in my skill and ability, but I WISH I could draw like David Finch.
Long format art with narration is perfect for me. I prefer listening to someone talk about art while drawing. Keep up the great work. Dealing with wet inks is a constant struggle. I keep a heat gun within reach to make drying time manageable when needed.
Dude I am so excited to find your channel. I have been a huge fan of your work for over 20 years. As an artist, I can't thank you enough for doing this. Please keep em coming!
Kim Jung Ji is the one artist who's so good it's almost irritating. Not that every he draws is perfect, but that he can seemingly draw anything well and from memory. His mental visual library is stunning.
I watched this whole video. You described so much that I can identify with as an artist. One take away was I'm usually under working the details. Love your work! May God continue to bless your life with this amazing gift.
hi Mr Finch, i have been your big fan for years. first time i saw your work is from Ascension, and since then i have bought most of your works, even hunted some posters or other merchandises of your work too. i really love your work. im very happy youre making these videos. i will always wait for your new works. thank you.
You asked for requests... I'd like to see a video on how you set up a page from the scratch and how to make it interesting, which angles to use, how to use dark space wisely and such! Thank you!
I like these long kinds of demonstrations, kinda like listening to podcasts to me lol. Hearing what your thoughts are when it comes to your process is also great!
I appreciate the honesty, and the way you explain every little thing in a simple way. Comics have always intimidating, but these tutorials make it more approachable.
Excellent video! I really enjoyed watching the process you used to create this piece. I am watching the video for a second time before I try to create my own piece using the techniques I picked up from watching your tutorial. Please keep providing this type of content! The part that impressed me the most was how you used cross hatching, lines of various shapes, etc. to create the values and shadows...really impressive, inspirational.
The fact that you struggle with your drawings means a lot to me. Because I struggle a lot with my lines thats why you saying you also struggle with it makes me happy. Thanks for making this video, you should make a lot more of these.
It is so good to see you working and hearing your thoughts and troubles with drawing. Sooo precious to hear how painters have common troubles all the way to the top!
As an aspiring artist, I found this more useful than an actual tutorial. Just seeing your thought processes, where and how you make decisions, and especially how you fix mistakes was incredibly helpful for my own development.
David, great to watch. I agree with your friend telling you to just draw start to finish no editing. I enjoyed the walk and talk. It was also beneficial to see your process as an experienced artist. Thank you for the content. It seems people would love to see some more. Cheers.
Me: Yes! Finished! David: Ok, next stage! Next Stage: inking and rambling. Takeaway: I've got to get much more serious and really commit to practicing my rambling. Also drawing. Thanks, Mr Finch. This video is helpful beyond what most tutorials offer. It is a brief glimpse into your perception of reality and how you are able to translate that into your work, which is what I suspect most people are really looking for.
That's Awesome, thank you very much for taking the time to do this. I could watch videos like this and draw all day everyday, I love to draw and Batman is my favorite super hero
@David Finch, I'm really enjoying this. I know you were concerned with the length but the pace is letting me follow along to study/practice doing my own sketch.
A topic suggestion i'd like to see is your process for organising light and shadows across a scene so they read well and pop the subject. You insights on this would be great :)
@@DavidFinchartist I'm sure any knowledge bombs you've got to drop on the subject would be great and informative. Maybe analysing your previous art would help save some time drawing something new? I'll appreciate whatever subject you cover, thanks for these man!

Lmao. Drawing ASMR is exactly how I've described it.
And I completely agree. I love when artists do this. We pencil art/comic book art lovers and aspiring artists love and need this.
My thoughts exactly! I need more of these from the great David Finch. I would love to see him draw moon knight in one of these.
