I’m one of those low level garegga players 😅. I don’t manage my rank well and it murders me toward the end. I need my continues to finish it. But I absolutely love it as it plays similar to older school carvan mode shooters and everything moves at a very high speed without slowdown. Even if I never get far in the scoring aspect I’d just enjoy getting good enough to 1cc and navigate it more competently.
The element of being "open ended" is such a beautiful observation. It really sets Garegga apart from so many other shmups with much more limited and obvious scoring systems. Garegga is mysterious, cryptic and esoteric. The sadistic rank system and the almost endless amount of secrets fits the oppressive atmosphere so well. It definitely isn't everybody's cup of tea, but when it comes to games being an artform, Garegga is without a question a masterpiece. And I don't know how true this is, but I remember reading somewhere that the rank was never actually designed be that brutal, but that it just kinda got out of hand, and that the whole suciding strategy was an unintentional side effect. There is something so oddly fascinating about a game forcing you to intentionally do something that goes against all your instincts as a player in order to play at a high level.

I personally do not have a single shmup GOAT, but an elite tier of GOD like shmups with four, maybe five titles. Any of them can be named the GOAT and I am fine with it; Garegga is one of them. What I found fascinating about Garegga is that I feel as if it is the polar opposite to my darling Ikaruga: while the former throws everything at the player with so many things to take into account (rank, medals, complex score tricks, fire and options powerups, fire rate settings etc.), the latter adopt the minimalist approach to shmup design (no power-ups, no rank, straightforward score system etc.), both crafting an incredible yet very different STG experience. To put it into a fancy allegory, I like to consider Garegga as an epic poem and Ikaruga as an haiku.
Well..there is something called disc-rot, discs do have a limited lifespan of 25-30 years. But that depends on the condition, how often it’s been used etc.
Imagine being any Japanese player who fed money into that machine before it was discovered that rank does not reset on game over. How peed off would you feel when that came out?!

If you want my honest opinion: i consider Battle Garegga, DoDonPachi, Batsugun, RayForce, Raiden II and 19XX: The War Against Destiny to be some of the best games in the shoot 'em up genre
Listened to the full podcast, great talk! BTW, Black Heart’s vulcan sweep direction is based on your position, not his. He sweeps towards the other half of the screen always from wherever you sit during the still part of the attack. So he could sweep right twice for example. For looks, music, depth/strategy and variety Garegga is the greatest I’ve dug into so far. Variability is a double edged sword but overall I’d put it in the strength category for fun factor and longevity. You should revisit your greatest shmups of the decade list sometime, the PS4 port is the greatest because the bullet colors and gadgets make this amazing game far more accessible!
In 2018 I was lucky enough to watch Kamui 1cc this game in Hey Game Centre, it was mind blowing. Despite that I haven’t spent any significant time with the game because of the many reasons you outline here. I like to feel my through these games via repetition, not by having to study and Google my through some crazy and counter intuitive rank system, fire settings etc. On top of that you add the hard to see bullets and I’m thanks, but no thanks. It’s almost like through a series of very bad design choices they accidentally created a quirky masterpiece. Maybe once I have worked my through all of the Cave goodness on offer I’ll dive deep into Garegga, but for now it is way down my play list.
Of Garegga is definitely worth the play for me! Heck, even Kamui, Kaede and many other Garegga players out there have inspired me to make my own series on my channel, where I talk about my gameplays of Battle Garegga, using any ship, even the ones that a majority request me to do, and give my commentary on the play, in terms of strategies, tricks, perks, etc. I've started this series when this year have commenced. And I am so glad I have digitally purchased this game for the PS4. All I need now is the infamous 10K medal delivered to me for when I mastered all of the achievements (not that it's a thing in actuality, but it would be cool if that were to happen, where the PSN give out game gifts for many achievements). lol Also, I have considered liking and subscribing! Congrats on the achievement I would call it: "New Subscriber!" Achievement! XD
Stage 6 is easily the biggest filter between the really good Battle Garegga players and just good ones. To this day, I cannot get past that stage consistently.
Also (and I’ll shut up in a sec) any shmup that requires tuning of auto fire settings in the back end in order to optimise score is just a ‘no’ for me.
I’ve just seen T3-Kamui playing this. I’m playing oh so wrong. I’m so green. There definitely is a way to Garrega! Apologies to electric underground. I understand why it gets easier when hara kiri is employed. I have much to learn .

because Raizing know if you have a high rank, you must be a pro player. and Raizing seems clever and not giving a chance even to the pro player to make the game easy by scoring. because Scoring is actually a value of the player performance on the game and Raizing know that and they was like "well played. now try this more brutal one. can you beat that?" and then the game is become more brutal. btw im still curious is Batrider have the same mechanic like that?
Not even close to me. I realize what so many like about it. It’s great for its time and incredibly influential and has a great OST for its time. But I am consistently shocked it gets top 1/2/3 votes by so many on the system 11 shmup forums. It’s not in my top 15
I’m probably in the minority here but I much prefer the sequel “battle bakraid” the backgrounds and colour pallet choices are more interesting, gone are the dart like projectiles that blended with the background (ruined the original experience for me) the music is not as cool however the overall package ticks all my pet peeves with garegga (still awesome though 👍)
I just 1cc'd the premium arrange with Golden Bat. I'm not gonna lie, I am glad it's not called something like 'easy mode' because I can enjoy it and tell myself it's not some dumbed down version even though it is. I'm gonna try Arcade with Miyamoto.

I like how it's sometimes possible to 'save' a chain after missing a medal if you get a medal created before the chain dropped before creating a new medal. Also, I like how I'm encouraged to adjust my play depending on the situation. Like in stage 5 with the aircraft carriers. I usually kill the stuff on the carriers as fast as possible. However, one time I lost my chain before that part and decided to destroy ships until I see a medal, stop firing, pick up a medal, then destroy ships until the next medal so I can build up my chain faster. If I destroyed everything as quickly as possible, I'd pick up a lot of redundant lower rank medals. At full rank, this is unnecessary. Arcade is definitely much harder than premium so I expect a 1cc to take me a while.
I made it to stage 5 default settings just playing for survival before I dropped in another credit.. I played straight up and didn't control rank so it murdered me stage 5 and on
First of all, a great reminder that I need to check out the podcast though I do find sitting here with the footage helpful for whatever reason. Second. At the very end here you hit on the biggest thing for me. I've been playing a ROM since this game is so highly reviewed and spoken about, and I just CAN'T SEE THE DAMN BULLETS. It doesn't matter how good a SHMUP is otherwise if I can't see the bullets, I'm not going to enjoy it. Even if I have to really strain to see them, I can't enjoy it. Third, it's great to hear that the PS4 port fixes this, but I really play on PC. I'm constantly baffled by games that are ported to modern consoles and then not brought to PC. I'll admit ignorance in not knowing how much work goes into a separate PC port. But given that the code had to be taken to work from a PCB setup, modified to work on a peripheral system, it just doesn't feel like it would be that much more to do and serve up this game to an even wider audience. It doesn't have to be STEAM, just easily accessible and loading on PC. Given my PC can eat a PS4 for lunch, it really feels like an odd problem to have. Fourth JUST LOOKED. IT'S ON XBOX!??? THEN JUST PUT IT ON THE XBOX PC APP! ARRRRRRRRRRRGH
I know this is not practical for how players would get through playing Garegga, but I want to seeeeeeeeeee.... Someone beat the game while collecting as much pins and badges and bombs as they can, without dying. I have yet to see anyone do that legitimately without TAS or cheating.
I've gained a lot of knowledge watching your vids on ketsui, esp. pa. de. and battle garegga. That said I'm using an arcade stick and wanted to know your opinion for button layout for each game. Currently, I'm using your layout from ketsui, and esp. w/ a slight tweak . But, i'm totally lost on a good arcade stick button layout for battle g. Almost forgot, is there a slow down speed mechanic for ship in battle g? Thanks for any info you can provide, and keep making Awesome, Informative, and Non - boring content!! / just subbed
That's awesome my dude! Thank you for the sub! My layout for garegga is: P1 = shot, P2 = change option, k1 = bomb, k2 = 10 autofire rapid shot, k4 = 20 autofire rapid. (You change your rapid fire to 10 on stage 1 and to 20 on stage 6.)

Any suggestions for most effective button mapping when using an arcade stick? Everything I’m finding online doesn’t really explain or just show preset button mapping which I feel isn’t comfortable or practical when using arcade stick. Thanks for all the dope content!
Which arcade version is considered the one to play? The default one or the one with the yellow bullets called 'second' or 'special' version? To be honest the bullets in default version are difficult to see some times.
So what's really cool is that in the ps4 port you can toggle colored bullets in the arcade mode (which I do all the time). I recommend pink and really think it's better than the actual arcade board because of this.
Definitely one if the best. I play garegga on the Saturn TATE with arranged options and it’s phenomenal! Seems this upload is on an easy setting. I play it on arcade and it’s pandemonium!! Get to stage 5 on 1 cred.
I have a lot of respect for Garegga (and anyone who can play it well, haha) but I dunno, it just doesn't click with me, or at least it hasn't yet. I don't mind having to learn complex mechanics (I really enjoy Hellsinker for example) but Garegga just feels kinda mean, at least without the PS4 rank monitor. I'm not sure how to put it, but the right way to play just feels wrong. I honestly kinda like the idea of suiciding to lower the rank since the default extend score compliments that, but the fact that I can't even enjoy having max power without the game kicking me in the balls for it just feels kinda dickish. That said, I don't dislike the game myself and I understand why it's so highly regarded, it's maybe just not for me. Also, even as someone without any problems with color or visual acuity (at least as long as I have my glasses on lol), the default bullet colors can go straight to hell, even if they look kinda cool.
Yeah there is no denying garegga wants the player to play in an unusual manner, I also struggle not being able to play all powered up earlier in the game.
Hey Mark I was wondering if you could tell me how you get the option formation that goes right up to the enemies? It seems hit and miss whether or not the option will change when getting the power up.
It might be the most hardcore, but it’s not the greatest. A Japanese shmup that enforces (literal) kamikaze actions by the player should never get the top spot. That’s my 2p worth.
@Run 1CC Yeah I have to say until I read the detailed rules info (bless the shmups forum) I wasn’t enjoying Gareagga much at all, once certain things made a lot more sense I did sink a lot of time into the game and start to love it, it’s never going to be an absolute favourite though.
Garegga is a little too hard to be the best of all time, it is not friendly at all. From Raizing I definitely prefer Battle Bakraid, a lot of the same formula, but more user friendly. A lot more colorful. It’s hard rodent that Ikaruga will always have a very high spot. Personally I think Mushihimesama Futari is the best. I have a soft spot for the Shikigami series as well, extremely good.
I'd play Garegga if they didn't go with the worst bullet design of any shmup I've ever seen. I've never seen a shmup with worse bullet design than the arcade release of Garegga.
Eh, it's an amazing shmup, but not the best, simply because there isn't one. Even in terms of only raizing titles, it very much depends on taste. I really love garegga, but i like armed police batrider a lot too, great mahou daisakusen is special, and kingdom grand prix is really fun and unique. When you start comparing it to other titles from other devs, everything just goes out the window because you can't compare any of those titles to something like raiden fighters, ikaruga, psyvariar, rayforce, etc. Every one's in their own category, it's like trying to say what song is best in general regardless of genre, you really can't.
Bland colors, generic military universe and small invisible bullets ruin this game for me. It just feel like an old, hostile game. I cant really express it but, it's like the game don't want me to play it. So... certainly not the greatest shmup for me.

You can adjust the bullet color in the ps4 version. You can change them to a variety of colors. I set mine to all be lime green.

oh that's awesome! Yes I think premium mode is def easier due to the lack of aggressive rank, but it's still a challenge overall :-)

Any suggestions for most effective button mapping when using an arcade stick? Everything I’m finding online doesn’t really explain or just show preset button mapping which I feel isn’t comfortable or practical when using arcade stick. Thanks for all the dope content!

Which arcade version is considered the one to play? The default one or the one with the yellow bullets called 'second' or 'special' version? To be honest the bullets in default version are difficult to see some times.
So what's really cool is that in the ps4 port you can toggle colored bullets in the arcade mode (which I do all the time). I recommend pink and really think it's better than the actual arcade board because of this.

Definitely one if the best. I play garegga on the Saturn TATE with arranged options and it’s phenomenal! Seems this upload is on an easy setting. I play it on arcade and it’s pandemonium!! Get to stage 5 on 1 cred.

I have a lot of respect for Garegga (and anyone who can play it well, haha) but I dunno, it just doesn't click with me, or at least it hasn't yet.
I don't mind having to learn complex mechanics (I really enjoy Hellsinker for example) but Garegga just feels kinda mean, at least without the PS4 rank monitor. I'm not sure how to put it, but the right way to play just feels wrong.
I honestly kinda like the idea of suiciding to lower the rank since the default extend score compliments that, but the fact that I can't even enjoy having max power without the game kicking me in the balls for it just feels kinda dickish.
That said, I don't dislike the game myself and I understand why it's so highly regarded, it's maybe just not for me. Also, even as someone without any problems with color or visual acuity (at least as long as I have my glasses on lol), the default bullet colors can go straight to hell, even if they look kinda cool.
Yeah there is no denying garegga wants the player to play in an unusual manner, I also struggle not being able to play all powered up earlier in the game.
You can change bullet colors on the ps4 version...really helps.
I don’t get why would you rather die in order to get a bomb when you could get them by picking up those little badges throughout the map?
Because you need more bombs to get more points to get more extends to die more to get more bombs :-)
How are you dodging so close?? Garegga has a HUGE hitbox.
If you use the C button or ABC at ship selection, you get a smaller hitbox :-)

Hey Mark I was wondering if you could tell me how you get the option formation that goes right up to the enemies? It seems hit and miss whether or not the option will change when getting the power up.

It s basically just used in ship select to get the fast version with the small hitbox
Saint 7 You can get the 3 button effect from simply not doing anything on the ship select screen. Just let it time out.
It might be the most hardcore, but it’s not the greatest. A Japanese shmup that enforces (literal) kamikaze actions by the player should never get the top spot. That’s my 2p worth.
@Run 1CC Yeah I have to say until I read the detailed rules info (bless the shmups forum) I wasn’t enjoying Gareagga much at all, once certain things made a lot more sense I did sink a lot of time into the game and start to love it, it’s never going to be an absolute favourite though.
Garegga is a little too hard to be the best of all time, it is not friendly at all. From Raizing I definitely prefer Battle Bakraid, a lot of the same formula, but more user friendly. A lot more colorful.
It’s hard rodent that Ikaruga will always have a very high spot.
Personally I think Mushihimesama Futari is the best. I have a soft spot for the Shikigami series as well, extremely good.
I'd play Garegga if they didn't go with the worst bullet design of any shmup I've ever seen. I've never seen a shmup with worse bullet design than the arcade release of Garegga.

Eh, it's an amazing shmup, but not the best, simply because there isn't one. Even in terms of only raizing titles, it very much depends on taste. I really love garegga, but i like armed police batrider a lot too, great mahou daisakusen is special, and kingdom grand prix is really fun and unique. When you start comparing it to other titles from other devs, everything just goes out the window because you can't compare any of those titles to something like raiden fighters, ikaruga, psyvariar, rayforce, etc. Every one's in their own category, it's like trying to say what song is best in general regardless of genre, you really can't.
Bland colors, generic military universe and small invisible bullets ruin this game for me.
It just feel like an old, hostile game.
I cant really express it but, it's like the game don't want me to play it.

I agree, to me, this is just an average shooter with drab graphics. You can't see the bullets, I even don't like the music.

Oh I hate that part of the game too. Luckily the ps4 port fixes this with the bullet color option! DDDEEEFFFF worth it.

@@TheElectricUnderground aside from melee weapon, those suicide and neglecting power ups and medals really bothered me alot. I can't concentrate letting them pass.
