Thank you for your tutorial. I inherited this sewing machine from my grandmother, clueless on how to use a sewing machine, but now I'm sewing. You're a great teacher.
Thank you so much for this video. My mom used this same machine and I inherited it after she passed away. Because of your generosity to post the video, I can now use her machine for sewing Boy Scout patches and doing other small projects. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for this video. Like others, I inherited my mother's favorite machine and for the life of me couldn't remember how to thread it properly. I'm sure my mom is smiling down from heaven knowing her favorite singer is still in use thanks to you taking time to share this wonderful video! Thanks also for sharing those hidden compartments about the threading and stitches. I do remember my mother showing me those as a child, but 30+ years later I had forgotten all about them.
I just bought this machine from a flea market here in Florida and I've been searching for a clear video on how to use it and you nailed it... THANK YOU!!!...
I borrowed this machine from a friend and without your video, I would have been totally lost! I could not help but notice the glock. I can see how you are a survivor. Keep on sewing sister!
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I just bought one of these machines used from a sewing machine repair guy because I wanted an old heavy metal reliable machine. He showed me how to thread it and I totally forgot so this was so helpful thank you so much💜
Thank you SO much for your video on how to thread the Singer 401A! I inherited my Mothers machine and couldn’t remember how to thread it properly. Your instruction has made me able to use this dear old machine again. Thank you, thank you, thank you! ❤️
I got one of this sewing machine from my grandmother today. After more than 50 years it runs as it's new. Thank you for that video, it helped a lot. Greetings from germany!
Greetings! Your videos have been an inspiration. I have a Euro Pro that I bought over 10 years ago. I use to sew curtains out of sheets, blankets (fleece) and pillow cases. I loved the machine and its power. Then my life changed and became very busy. After watching your video and being inspired by a crafty friend. I finally used my machine over the weekend. I am back in love! I bought a dress that was four sizes too big (on clearance) and needed to adjust it. It went well and I got so many compliments on the dress when I wore it on Monday. Now I am going to try those pads you mentioned in another video. Thanks for sharing and caring! Keep the great and diverse video coming. I have been a subscriber of yours for a few years now. We need to see more of your videos more often. Peace and blessings to you!
Thank you soooo much for the kind words my friend. :-) I will do my best to put forth more effort into creating new videos. I've just been soooo busy! You take care, and GREAT JOB ON THE DRESS!!! POW!
This is an EXCELLENT video! I have a 401a and I’m always looking for expert advice on how to use it and take care of it. I appreciate the straightforward description of how to thread the machine. Using a crochet hook to hold a larger size spoil of thread for winding the bobbin is genius!
A beautiful sewing machine. What a great find you have. Glad that you have it working. You have inspired me to get my sewing machine in use again. Happy sewing!
Thanks for a very clear and well-presented tutorial. You have a great machine there, I have a Singer Capri, it is 30 years old but my friend has a treadle Singer from the 1900s it is black embellished with golden sphinx, in fact it is called the Sphinx, Egyptian or Memphis. It's a mark of how well they were made that all our machines are in perfect working order! If you can get your hands on one of the old hand-cranked or treadle ones I'd get one of those as well as a back up! All the very best from Normandie, Sue
My pleasure. :-) Thanks for the tip! I will definitely look into getting one of those. Judging by how mine work now, I know that it would work like a dream!
I was so happy to find this video! You did an excellent job showing how to thread this machine. I was given one identical to yours so I will be following your channel to learn how to use mine. Thank you from an Iowa farm girl!
That's when the sewing machines were made good. Not like the "disposable" ones today. And I saw that you had all the necessary tools you need for sewing.... your pistol, your magazine, and cell phone. LOL. Thanks for sharing.
I also have several different presser feet and cams for fancier stitches. I have an original manual and lots of extra attachments. Lemme know if you'd like to borrow any parts. I own two of these machines. One is working. I haven't tested the other one but I keep it for spare parts.
Thank you for your kind offer my friend, but, mine also came with the same. I got the" WORKS" with this purchase! It's GREAT that you have one on standby to use for parts if need be. This is TOO COOL! :-)
Thank you SO MUCH!!! I'd tried to thread my machine multiple times before I watched this video, and this helped INCREDIBLY. If you still make videos, I will subscribe to you, because I'm a young "seamstress" as a hobby.
My great grandmother died. I was sewing around then. So her sewing, and crocheting things went to me. I had this sewing machine and didn't know how to use it. What I learned: spinning a bobbin, threading the machine, and that it has a light.
I purchased a 401A. singer sewing machine. Serial NA 649303. It is a 1951 made in S Carolina. It didn’t come with any cords but I thought I could purchase it online. I am not having much success. Singer says the part 122 for power cord would work but I can’t see how a three prong square would fit on a round hole with 2 prongs. Since you have one like mine I am wondering how yours work? I have another 401a and those cords won’t fit this machine. If you can be of help I would very much appreciate it. Thank you.

Hi Inasurvivothriver, I really enjoyed your video. I love my 401A also. I once had a major problem because I made a slight error while threading my machine which was a 600E. Thank you very much for this video. Your terminology is awesome! I knew exactly what you meant. If used the real names for all that, I would have been lost. lol, Thanks a million
I just got my dream sewing machine. It's the Singer 401a. It's exactly the same as yours. These old models were made to last and easy to repair. I watched other TH-cam videos and I couldn't understand them. I'm thankful that I finally found your video. I also love your iguana hunting video. I agree with all the points you made about them being an invasive species. If I had iguanas where I lived I would absolutely hunt and eat them.
So, In my opinion your 401A is the best mechanical sewong machine without a free arm. It has true all steel drive train and even steel cams. You can get a manualbfor it online. But be sure to get the manual for the A1 and not the 401G. You can get a replacement spindle for your bobbin winder, but I think some re0lacements are more authentic than others, so you have to be picky when purchasing. I usually cut bobbin thread held after the first few revs of the bobbin. As long as no dumb ass doesn't force the cam shifter, it should last hundreds of years, taken care of. Aslo, Id replace, but keep bulb, with and LED, because better and saves power, and get a modern foot controller too.
Forgot how you threaded since I was enthralled with the Glock (?) 9mm with magazine next to it odd it’s just lying there , but cool you’re so used to it didn’t even notice it 👍🤣🙌🏼. I have one too . I assume you know how to use it too just as well as the Singer. lol
Nice Video I’m new to your channel. Watching and learn how to use this Sewing Machine the same machine your using. Please can you tell me were can I Purchase Neddles from for this machine. Thank you so much for sharing your video❤️
Hi, I am about to get one of these that belonged to my grandmother (will be my fifth machine lol, my mom's, also a singer, an older brother that is noisier than a train, a kenmore older than me that weighs a ton but sews beautifully, and a brother embroidery) phew. Right now I make dog collars and leashes and some quilting. But I read in the comments about being prepared (it was your reply). So all this to ask, can I use plastic bobbins with this one? Or do I need to buy specific metal ones? I always try to have backup bobbins when I have a large project as I don't like getting interrupted. Also I got a kick from your personal protection there 👍😂.be nlessed and please let me know, thank YOU!
Hi there my friend! You have QUITE the selection there! LOL!!! AWESOME!! To answer you question, ONLY get the metal bobbins for this machine. I got mine from sewingmachinesplusDOTcom. I hope this helps. ;-)
I see you missed a step in threading the machine. After threading the thread through the tensioner you should have gone back through that biggest hook attached at the top of the tensioner before going through that eye on the arm that goes up and down. You'll see the thread going through that hook twice if you look at the diagram on the machine. Thank you for the awesome video. I inherited my husband's grandmother's singer 401a and had no idea how to thread it until watching your video.
Here's a hint: When you change the thread or have to thread a bobbin, pull the thread loose at the spool then cut the thread leaving the machine threaded. Then tie the new thread on up by the spool and unthread the needle.pull the old thread down by the needle and pull the new thread all the way to the needle. Cut the knot and just re-thread the needle.. ALSO it is easier to thread the needle with the foot in the down position, at least for me cause I have fat fingers--and bad eyes
I think that repairing and making clothing and other things would be KEY during rough times. Kids grow like weeds and they need new clothing. Even if you don't have kids, family members and folks you could barter with does. You may have to make accessories like chest rigs or a multitude of other things. I make homemade cloth menstrual pads with mine as well as WonderBags (Thermal Cookers). Learn the skills now so that you have them when you need them. It's also important to use and service your sewing machine now so that you don't have to worry about repair issues later on. If you get a BOMB PROOF ALL METAL machine like I have, you don't have to worry too much about that. I still got mine serviced though. I'd also recommend getting LOTS of polyester thread and other accessories like extra needles, rotary cutters (For cutting cloth), fabric scissors, buttons, zippers, a cutting mat, Seam Rippers, etc... I may do a video about important sewing accessories one should have. :-) Even if you don't know how to sew, if you have a sewing machine and accessories, others who do could help you would if you have all the supplies needed to accomplish this. With that being said, though, I'd recommend learning how to sew yourself and get acquainted with your machine. Thank you very much for this. I’ve had one of these for a little bit but was unsure of how to make it work. It’s as old as I am😁. I have a Janome 100 machine, a nice machine, but just feels too much plastic to me
Your video reminded me of my mom, who sewed everything. I thought you were just going to widen that needle a few millimeters with the Glock, to make it real easy. ;-)
We are all here because the Singer Manual for the 401 is useless at the threading page (Singer did much better with the manuals for the following models)
I think as a former marine soldier your instructions are top-notch 👍
Thank you.
Thank you for your tutorial. I inherited this sewing machine from my grandmother, clueless on how to use a sewing machine, but now I'm sewing. You're a great teacher.

Thank you for having the essentials: scissors, check, thread, check, sewing machine , check, semi-auto pistol, double check
Thanks for watching my friend. :-)
Thank you so much for this video. Like others, I inherited my mother's favorite machine and for the life of me couldn't remember how to thread it properly. Holy shit! Menstrual pads and a pistol with extra mag all to start the vid! OK I love this person!

A sewing machine, a Glock and a cell phone. What more does a girl need? lol Great video.
Not much else. LOL!!!! Thank you my friend.
That's in case someone tries to use your fabric scissors for ANYTHING ELSE, lol
A beautiful sewing machine. What a great find you have. Glad that you have it working. You have inspired me to get my sewing machine in use again. Happy sewing!
Thank you my friend. Yessss... Pull that old girl out. 😊👌✌✌
My mom had one like this. I remember that bobbin-winding gizmo. Thx for the memory. :)

Fantastic - loved the gun beside the sewing machine at the beginning ! - very well presented - thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My first time sewing and we have the same machine your video was so helpful thank you so much !!
Thank you!! I just had this machine passed down to me, and am happy to learn how to thread “her!”
My pleasure. What a nice heirloom. :-)
Lol literally took me three minutes to notice the Glock laying by the machine. Lol
I flat love that. Keep it up, that's amazing
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. :-)
Thank you, very informative. Can you show us how to clean the gun next? 😁
God Bless you! I have this exact machine & have been struggling with threading it with the bobbin......thank you so much!
You're very welcomed my friend. :-)
HEY! We have the same sewing machine and the same revolver (Governor)! Subscribed and Liked!
This is kinda mind boggling. What are the chances that two people own the same gun and the same sewing machine?
I also have several different presser feet and cams for fancier stitches. I have an original manual and lots of extra attachments. Lemme know if you'd like to borrow any parts. I own two of these machines. One is working. I haven't tested the other one but I keep it for spare parts.

The kind of video where paying close attention really pays off.
ur video is right on time. my sister in law just gave me a sewing machine. :D

Thank you SO MUCH!!! I'd tried to thread my machine multiple times before I watched this video, and this helped INCREDIBLY. If you still make videos, I will subscribe to you, because I'm a young "seamstress" as a hobby.

Oh thank you so much for this video!! You were easy to follow and made do excited to get back into sewing! Thank You!!!!
You're welcomed hun. Happy sewing!!! :-)
Is the gun a backup plan where you shoot the machine if it doesn’t cooperate?
HA HA HA
Do you have a video on how to replace the needle on this machine?
awesome, I borrowed a sewing machine, and that setting that bobbin was giving me a fit , I will try again.. take care
Thanks hun. You take care too. :-)
My great grandmother died. I was sewing around then. So her sewing, and crocheting things went to me. I had this sewing machine and didn't know how to use it. What I learned: spinning a bobbin, threading the machine, and that it has a light.
Sewing is a great skill to have! You are sooooo fortunate to have those things passed down to you. Happy sewing! :-)
Thank you for clarifying! I was turning the knob the wrong way 🤣 I watched so many videos and no one said that at all.
MY MOM HAD ONE JUST LIKE THAT WOW BRING BACK THE MEMORIES. DO YOU HAVE THE BUTTONHOLE FOOT FOR IT. VERY COOL THANKS SIS GOD BLESS
Yes. I also have the button hole foot for it. :-)
VERY COOL YOUR OLD SCHOOL I LOVE IT GOD BLESS
I also have one which my mum in law took with her to England in 1951. Still looks new. God bless and thank for sharing!
Me too ! My mom had one when I was a kid in 1970 ish
Thank you.
Try sewing parts USA. They should have it there. I hope this helps. :-)
Can you show me your cords on here. I want to see what they look like before I put more money into it.
Just a bit of information… Singer did not manufacture a zig zag sewing machine in 1951…

Hello, ive been following your steps however when i put my scissors under on the last step it pulls out my thread from the needle. Can you explain how to do that step the right way ?
I just got me a 401a, having a hard time getting the thread tension right.
I'm sorry that I just saw this comment. Maybe the machine needs to be serviced???
little spring on tension is called a check spring
Thank you. :-)
Is a mechanical machine better than modern electronic ones? Would like to do basic sewing of shirts and jeans. Could someone help advise?
Hi Inasurvivothriver,
I really enjoyed your video. I love my 401A also. I once had a major problem because I made a slight error while threading my machine which was a 600E. I have quite a few singer machines. While you were threading your machine you bypassed a step in your threading. When you threaded the upper thread tension discs spring you should have Inserted the thread in the metal opening that sits right above the upper needle thread tension discs. The next step was then threading the take up lever. Also, you might want to check the proper placement of the bobbin thread when you’re getting ready to sew. Singerco.com has many vintage manuals for free on their website.
Mr. Richard Brandon was wondering where people were getting their information about dates when singers were produced. When I was researching the serial number of my 401 to see when it was made, there was a website that stated that the serial number of my machine was produced in 1951. At the time I thought that was strange because my previous research had said that they were produced around 1954. I think the website was about words of America or something like that. There is a Website that states that the 401 was produced in 1951numbers for the 401.
Oops, pressed the wrong button. Ignore the last couple of sentences .I meant to delete them. I hope you’re still enjoying your 401A.Thanks again for an enjoyable video.
Another correction I think the website was called sours
I just received this machine not knowing that it has a slant shank. Can I use regular singer needles for this? Thank you
Yes. Standard needles work.
Yes you could my friend. :-)
I love my sewing machine and its old, not as old as yours but they are soo useful!!
Yes they are sis!!!! :-)
question. I have this machine and have no idea how to use it. Can you possibly help me?
This is one skill I must learn. Knowing how to sow and stitch is very important because clothes rip easily. I hate going to tailors...lol
Agreed my friend! It's a VERY IMPORTANT skill to learn, and will make you invaluable in an SHTF situation! You could make ALL KINDS of things!
Are you still answering questions?
Thank you very much for this video. Your terminology is awesome! I knew exactly what you meant. If used the real names for all that, I would have been lost. lol, Thanks a million

My pleasure my friend. 😊
My thread keeps breaking ...is this a needle problem? Driving me crazy!!!
I have my grandmothers old Singer. I think it's a little older than yours, but they are similar. I haven't used it in years.
They are built to last!!
I own one of these I didn't know it had instructions (I inherited it) this was very helpful

You're very welcomed my friend. Happy sewing!!! :-)
Nice glock! And thank you for the visor cause I count figure it out

Why should I acquire a sewing machine as part of my prepping strategy?
Even if you don't know how to sew, if you have a sewing machine and accessories, others who do could help you would if you have all the supplies needed to accomplish this. With that being said, though, I'd recommend learning how to sew yourself and get acquainted with your machine. If you don't have a friend or family member who could teach you, Joann Fabrics gives free sewing lessons. I hope this helps. :-)
Nothing better than a Glock and a Singer sewing machine~

Should I have my US Marine Corp issued .45 Caliber gun with me ... ?
LOL!!!
Thank you very much for this. I’ve had one of these for a little bit but was unsure of how to make it work. It’s as old as I am😁. I have a Janome 100 machine, a nice machine, but just feels too much plastic to me
Please dear, put a disk of felt under the spool to preserve the machine's finish, great machine keep it oiled and it will last several lifetimes
Will do! Thanks for the tip my friend. :-)
Luv the 9mm.
outstanding video !
Thank you my friend. 😊
Your video reminded me of my mom, who sewed everything. I thought you were just going to widen that needle a few millimeters with the Glock, to make it real easy. ;-)
LOL
Thank you! I've only used this machine twice and it confuses me so much hahah
The knob won't loosen. It won't budge at all.
Thanks for your tutorial!!!
Thank you very much, this helped my friend

We are all here because the Singer Manual for the 401 is useless at the threading page (Singer did much better with the manuals for the following models)
