It might be worthwhile for you (and other people commenting) to take a look past Mr Horst’s results at other published Galaxy watch studies ( of which there are many), which typically involve far more participants. And as regards heart rate accuracy, I also have two chest worn HRM’s and found a much closer agreement between them and my Watch 5, than demonstrated in the video. A quick online search got me to the following four studies (the titles are in quotation marks).
Galaxy Watch 4 Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) measurement showed a 97-98% correlation with the two reference devices.
"Next-generation smart watches to estimate whole-body composition using bioimpedance analysis: accuracy and precision in a diverse, multiethnic sample - The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition"
Galaxy Watch 5 ranked 2nd out of 11 consumer sleep trackers
"Accuracy of 11 Wearable, Nearable, and Airable Consumer Sleep Trackers: Prospective Multicenter Validation Study - PubMed (nih.gov)"
Study characterizing the performance of the Galaxy Watch 4 when measuring the estimated SpO2 during sleep. The accuracy of the GW4 complies with the FDA and ISO standards.
"Performance evaluation of a wrist-worn reflectance pulse oximeter during sleep - Sleep Health: Journal of the National Sleep Foundation (sleephealthjournal.org)"
The Samsung smartwatch provides acceptable HR, time-domain HRV, LF, and HF parameters during sleep time. In contrast, during the awake time, AVNN and HR show satisfactory accuracy, and the other HRV parameters have high errors.
"A comprehensive accuracy assessment of Samsung smartwatch heart rate and heart rate variability - PMC (nih.gov)"

theyre limited by their measure methods they can use as a watch. also theres anatomical differences. i got a big ass vein at the place where they measure, so mine will be more accurate than someone who doesnt have that. but that only applies to blood related measurements. also no device like this or bathroom weight measures body composition well. cause this method, in general have severe flaws that makes it inaccurate.

Also, on the sensor testing I would definitely redo this comparison in like 2 months to see what things look like with fully ironed out software. 🤷
Products like these are absolutely NOTORIOUS for coming in hot on the software development front right at the inital launch before ironing out the missed major issues with the first couple major software updates.
But if things are still just as inconsistent a few months from now, then we sadly have ourselves something of a very legitimate problem. Although the fact that it already CAN function accurately & consistently outdoors (aka the hardest conditions for a light based sensor) that means the new sensor hardware itself IS good enough and it should be able to be fixed to work just as well indoors simply with software updates. 🤷

    • @TheQuantifiedScientist

Makes total sense to redo the testing later (and also more testing now). Thanks for sharing!

    • @Cooe.
      @Cooe. หลายเดือนก่อน

@@TheQuantifiedScientist Considering the outdoors during peak summer sun results (again, by FAAAAAAAR the hardest environment for any visible/IR light based sensor!), I'm more than fairly confident than the GW7/Ultra's brand new sensor suite legitimately does have the horses for courses on a hardware level. The inconsistencies only being found when indoors really just seem to just be a software optimization issue, not a deficient hardware capabilities one. 🤷
That said, how long it takes Samsung to actually fix these software optimization problems with the new sensor via updates though is a whole different kettle of fish. Here's hoping it's sooner rather than later!
If they can fix these sensor inconsistencies though, Samsung will have a MASSIVE winner on their hands with just how INSANELY FAST & FAR AHEAD OF THE COMPETITION (even Apple!!!) the new 3nm Exynos W1000 is in therms of smartwatch SOC performance!
ESPECIALLY when you consider the fact that it (Exynos W1000) &/or slightly tweaked derivatives of it (think GW6's slightly higher clocked W930 vs the GW4/5's OG W920) are likely to be used in the next ≈2-3x generations of Galaxy Watch, meaning NOW is the time to upgrade for peak longevity!

The graph comparing multiple smartwatches seems to have made an accurate comparison but it is not so. This is because all watches were not tested with the same protocol and performed the same exercise at the same time zone. It makes no sense to believe this data as the subject pool was actually one person. Measuring ppg signals requires a sample size of over 100 people for basic comparisons.

With that being said, I have a hard time paying this much when I can get a Garmin Forerunner 965 or Garmin Venu 3 that is more accurate and has 90% of the smart watch capability, with 1-2 weeks of battery life.

I used all three, Garmin, Apple and Samsung, Samsung isn't even close to the other two for results. Samsung watch told me I only burned 200 calories for a 5k run, the other two had me closer to 500. Forget any type of weightlifting metrics, not even close to having any type of recorded workout. I can understand a small percentage here and there but Galaxy watches are super unreliable especially when you start hitting 10k runs or rucks.

Great video. Disappointed with the results for the two watches. What I look for in a watch is:
    1. Android (not an Apple user)
    2. 7 to 10-day battery life (so even if I was an Apple user, I wouldn't like to use Apple watches)
    3. Great heart rate measurement and sleep tracking (don't care about GPS)
    4. Form factor of a regular watch (round screen, big enough for my wrist - don't like smart bands or rings).
It seems to me that, as of today, there are no options available in the market that fit all 4 criteria. Garmin Venu 3 is the closest, but even that is a bit too far from the top of sleep trackers for my taste.

It seems UI 7 is about to be launched in August, and maybe it will improve measurements.
I received the 7 Ultra yesterday, and I see no big differences with the 5 pro I had.
Same issue on body composition vs an "8 electrodes/2 different currents" scale (the watch recognizes a part of the skeletic muscle as body fat ~2%).
Also a bad measurement during a cycle training yesterday which stopped at 5min (didn't notice until I finished. Maybe I've done something wrong?) It has never happened with the 5 pro.
      GPS is ok.
That's why I strongly think a software improvement is on the way as they cannot keep these "average" measurement though they have top notch hardware.

This chart makes me think the galaxy watch is doing too much averaging in software. That would help explain the delay compared to the H10 and the fact that it misses short HR dips. The good news is that can be resolved in software updates.
Then again, your correlation charts indicate why they're using so much software averaging.
The GPS data is certainly interesting considering the phones share the same hardware so you would think the only difference might be some layout changes. I wouldn't think you would see this much of it difference in GPS performance. This makes me think the 7 is making some GPS compromises in software to improve battery life. It would be pretty unfortunate to find out the 7 derates performance in software just to make the Ultra stand out as the better device.

Oh yes, been waiting for this! The new BioActive sensor didn't seem to improve the results... A disappointment. As for the Ultra being better for GPS, I'm wondering if its larger battery means programming has been tuned to poll more frequently? The body impedance measurement... if true [it's not], 2.9%, you'd have very low testosterone levels, and over time become depressive, probably. I usually take 5 or 10 measurements in a row and calculate an average because they vary somewhat. They seem to be very sensitive to how the fingers are placed on the two button sensors, also tightening the strap, and placing the watch a bit higher up on the arm. When you do gym testing, please consider testing the rep counting, too. I wish Samsung released access to this for external apps. It used to be part of all Wear OS watches in Google Fit, until Samsung entered the scene. Unless there's review data out there, I believe Samsung will rest on their laurels for this particular feature in terms of where they allocate their development resources. Looking forward to the follow up.
