A very common refrigeration service call

- Got a call for a unit tripping on head head. Customer resets unit but it trips again. Let’s take a look.
If you would like to buy me a cup of coffee www.paypal.me/...

3:50 - You named your van "Gina"?
11:24 - I have another "new" trick for you that you may already know: give your trigger a quick squeeze in the tight direction then gently pulse in the reverse to keep from breaking off that set screw.
12:12 - Every fan guard nut I've seen is a 11/32" nut. I bought a Klein Mag 11/32 just for that purpose.
That license plate 😂
Made me think of- Brennan has a mangina boats n hoes. Lol
For the square head set screws, get you an external torx socket set. They work perfect for those.
"Motor is hot as hells bells!" brings me back to 1988 when AC/DC had is rise up out of the stage! Epic concert!
Best rock band ever.
@@NorCal-refrigeration Sorry it's not.....Led Zeppelin.!
@@IFIXCASTLES AC/DC
It a light beer Comerical lol
""I'm rolling thunder, pouring rain.. I'm coming on like a hurricane.. My lightning's flashing across the sky.. You're only young, but you're gonna die.""
pretty sure that's right. lol.
Zeppelin rules, AC/DC is right up there with them in my books and so is Lynyrd Skynyrd (yes, as simplistic minimal chords as they played) overall composition and performance :))
Hate have’n to short stroke it. 🤣. Still gets her done.
😂😂😂😂😂
You should nickname that sight glass on the right side of the frame bubbles. 😂
Keep hitting that high head reset 🤣
Another great production Super Dave 👍👍👍🍺🍺🍺
WOW, now that is a drive!
oncoming bacon-mobile in traffic @ 0:31 or was that a park ranger LOL
My spider/bat sense are pretty good at detection :))
i was actually shocked i thought while you were driving good old Dave was going to have to do a condensing unit change out.. i thought the condenser would of been eaten up by the ocean but nope!! damn motor ! plus good old dirty bastard !
Great info! Good to know what types of universal condenser fan motors to keep on hand. I do a lot of small refrigeration and in the process of working on my way up to the big boys! I appreciate your channel!
Pull the bottom bolts/screws off the fan cover before the tops. The tops will still hold the weight and can remove the bottom ones with your fingers once you crack them loose.
I found using an extended handle water key for those CFM prop set screws works great
Those nuts with attached star washers are called keps nuts. Jim
simply and fun
A Milwaukee m12 3/8 ratchet would have helped with those bottom bollts Another great video.
Hey Dave , something that's helped me with those annoying tight spots like the lower left fan shroud bolt in vid where its hard to get a full turn of a wrench even with a ratchet is a impact right angle attachment, can put your extensions and whatever you'd need to get to the area. Usually does the job for me!
Thanks for the Practical Knowledge Dave!
I know that spot. Good riding around there.
I just love the condenser unit calls. Got one similar to yours Dave. Unit was working but taking a long time to pull down. My company had sent a tech out for previous call of coil frozen and replaced defrost clock in condenser but did not do a big picture on it (Thanks to Chris for that) and missed the seized up primary condenser fan. I was sent and noticed that when I opened the cover. One of the little 4 inch motors. Got them back up and running. I loved the bubble view while you were working on the unit.
Keep the tippy references coming !
Good video Dave. I like the background music used in this video. Thanks for the tips.
Great repair video. I enjoyed the road trip in the Vangina, but I couldn't help feeling a little bad for Tippy 😉
Tippy got some today. Lol
@@NorCal-refrigeration OK, I feel better 😄
Hi bro from west Alabama love your show
Thank you.
@@NorCal-refrigeration Yqe bro
Just yer service wrench works great on those set screws if accessable
Another shaft shinning gem. Thanks dave. Keep em coming. 👍
dirty coil/low airflow will generally cause less load/current draw, since it's not doing as much work. unless it's an ECM, which is likely junktronic design. lol
Aftermarket motor , aftermarket blade nice . That motor is a life saver, I have one living in my van 🚐. Could use the angle with the impact for those lower bolts 😀😬. Good video Dave .
I have the angle adapter too lol
@@NorCal-refrigeration I always find it easier to use in those situations instead of the speed wrench 🔧, but hey to each it’s own ! 😅😀
I use the 8 points sockets to remove this square head bolts
Great video Dave.
That condenser fan struggled right from the start, when you reset the pressure switch.
Watching that sight glass was oddly fascinating as the refrigerant moved slowly through it.
by 2:27 my first thoughts, low ambient/fan cycle switch bad or partial phase loss/low voltage overload upstream (assuming 3 phase supply to unit)
but the compressor sound is kind of drowned out and unknow singles/three phase. lol. ok I'll quit guessing and watch :))
Piece of cake taking that fan blade out. Always nsave for last the ol' dependable Elbow Grease...
I like to "shine my shaft" while I'm watching NorCal Dave videos.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Great video
Thanks for the video!

Stay safe.
Retired (werk'n)keyboard super tech. Wear your safety glasses!
1/4" Milwaukee 12v fuel ratchet works great for those hard to get fasters been using a cordless ratchet for years. Way faster then fighting a manual ratchet or wrench in tight spots.
Good idea. i think i might get one.
When the fan motor is so hot it melts your glove.... It's time to replace it. 😎👍
to keep the coffee hot in the winter!
Sweet one
You definitely need to do a video on hobart whatever. They have absolutely no tech support, and will not help you in any way. I'm trying my hardest to have our store to stop selling anything hobart. Apparently hobart wants to make their own services calls, but I get called out on their crap, and sometimes have to tell the customer a lie just to have time to figure out the issue. Bro, please, let's as technicians ban hobart, because they will not help us in the field. If you know someone, or have any ideas that can help with mixers, and any other products hobart sells, please let me know. I do the hot and cold side, and I'm the only technician as of now, any help would be greatly appreciated. Let's talk tomorrow Dave, Friday night talk with all the working dads!! You are definitely the man bro, don't forget about towtrucker, he's another guy that's just amazing at his job, look him up. See you tomorrow night, hopefully!!!
Love the tips my man ! I’ll pass these on to the techs in my life 🤘🏽
That is awesome
#447 Thumbs up That other unit looks like it needs a shot of the gundy!
8pt sockets are great for those types of set screws and square-headed pipe plugs and older square-headed fasteners.. less chance of rounding them off. doesn't look like there is much room for those units to breathe... also looked like a nice drive
So the theme song about loving burgers? Sup with that?
I think it says "lurkers"
2:22 Hella dude. Was that the thermodynamics g--g--ggghost!?
What type of gloves do you use?
Greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷
Sir please get an angle bit lol
👍👍👍great one Dave
Thanks Harold 🤘⚡️🤘✨
A note on the square bolts... they make 6,8,&12 point sockets. The square bolt has 4 sides, the socket points must be divisible by 4, hense, the 8 point socket is best. In a pinch, I’ll use the 12 point socket but, they tend to strip a tight bolt. For this reason, all my sockets are 6 point, except for the few 8’s I have for 1/4” bolts or the occattional commercial spigot that has a recessed square stud and no handle. That motor as you said was overheated and may have still been a bit tight or a worn cap. Did you notice, the installer didn’t remove the ring mounts? They only come with the motor as a convenience for resilient mounted motors. Your supposed to remove them. When one vibrates off and shakes the thing apart, you will have leaned the hard way. They serve no other purpose.
Thank you for sharing
I try to cut my fan shafts so they barely stick out past the fan hub, makes replacing the motor a bit easier.
thanks or sharing.good info.
Hate that damn corner bolt that you have to get at with the wrench
Was that old 1/3hp motor a 1075rpm? I've found a lot condensing units with aftermarket A/C motors on, usually during the years first heat wave. That's when we find who called chuck in a truck when business was slow
Great video, in one of your live cast please address the need to LABLE a unit if you change refrigerants. Pizza shop Tuesday calls, regular guy unavailable. Filter drier leaking. Closed my valves, replaced evac, broke vacuum with R22 (manufacture tag listed) As I’m opening high side valve guy brings me a receipt for previous call last February. CONVERTED TO 407F. WTF they NEVER replaced the drier it rusted thru (OEM) Obviously you know how the rest of the call went. Please guys mark it down. 🤬
wtf r u on about
Nice!
Dave, should that right hand compressor sight glass been bubbling like that before the compressor started, and even after? (A non-HVAC tech!) Love you stuff and you teaching abilities
We have some units where they put the pump down solenoid on the suction side instead which can cause that bubbling during the off cycle. Probably shouldn’t have bubbles while it’s running though 🤷♂️
Nice front license plate homie
The vangina it has a song 🎶 too
Yeah I bet the vagina does have a song buddy
Why is the fan blade backwards like that?
Pro shaft polisher ;)
Esta que te encontre
I’m glad I watched this, is there a Mars replacement for the bigger Copeland condenser fan motor because the last time I bought one it wasn’t cheap?
How long was that ride
What are we hit if we LOVED the video Dave??? 👍👍👍👍👍👍
also "customer keeps resetting the high head switch", mafia/mob style warning style snap(break) a few of their fingers while there >>> :))))
What is the capacity and refrigerant
Having a dirty coil would cause the amps to be lower since it's not able to move much air/ do work?
Need some help, my walk in cooler is only at 44° and my evaporator is icing up, what do you think my prob is
Could be a number of things.
Start with T stat setting ( is it set to low ). 37-36 degrees lowest.
Dose unit have a defrost timer?
Is door gasket good
Dose unit have clean coils
Is the charge correct
Is the super heat set right
Are the fans operating correctly
Is compressor low capacity
There’s a ton to check
Was the door left open?
@@NorCal-refrigeration I'm in Jamaica and it's very humid, all those pointers you mentioned are fine. I'm wondering if my superheat is too low. Can no load (empty box) pull down too quick and give me such a phenomenon?
Looks like someone put a universal blower motor on it.
A Mars a day helps you work rest and play....
Dave what are the usual rpm’s for a little unit like that. I do residential AC and CFM’s are either 825 RPM or 1075 RPM
This unit is 1550. You can tell @ 12:55
@@hobbymadness I don’t know why I didn’t see that. Thank you
👍
You forgot to check the capacitors to be safe.
Short strokes lol. Need ball deep. More sensation
I normally work on process or comfort cooling. Refrigeration every once in a while. I can say though....reefer equipment is abused and neglected a lot more than any other form of cooling.
Repair on break.
