Omg! I didn't grow up here, yet I related to all. Star Market, the old stadium... what are the young ones going to use for directions if no can use their phones? (Mahalo nui for such a wonderful show!)
OMG! I soooo happy jus' now! I jus' stumbo on dis channel n it take me back to kekihood! Back to James Campbell fo' grades 7-11, Barber's Point Elementary fo' grades 2-3 n' Waianae Elementary fo' K-1 grades. We rented a house on Makaha Beach from da Holt family. My mother played piano at the Baptist church in Waianae. Mahalo Andy!
I was visiting a friend in Hilo and changed out of my wet shorts into a dry pair, behind the car door (where people might guess what I was doing, but could not see anything). Needless to say, I was confronted by a young man who was unhappy with me, despite my apologies and staying away from him. His entire demeanor changed when my friend intervened, "oh, uncle Jerry." (Worried look on his face. glance to me) "I did not know it was you." Mahalo, Andy. You bring the islands to us. Aloha
Tanks for da memories. Used to love going Termite Palace for Islanders games listening to Guido Salmagi sing da National Anthem, an da guy in da crowd who always yelled "there goes the ball game". Everyone said if the termites quit holding hands the place wen fall down. Good times.
I know EXACTLY what you mean about talking about people! My dad does that all the time when it comes to family. "You know Aunty Honey? You know Tutu Rose on your Grandpa Akeo side cousin so and so's mother's brother the one living down in Kahaluu. You know the house with the river in the back?" So funny!!!

Made me laugh about watering something. I remember the stadium lived close enough could hear them cheering. But for the directions for Star Market was the best. When I was there visiting my sister I was totally lost where places were even Star Market. But now I know where it is with your directions. Thanks
This one wen crack me up. When I first came to Afghanistan I had to stop giving directions using mauka/makai and Ewa/Diamond Head. I actually had to figure out north south east west. Even den, trying to tell military people fob from the mainland wea Ewa was, was a chore.

No let peepo into traffic, try get ahead by passing on da right, etc.. Some wāhine get so hūhū jass cuz some nice guy like u stay open da door foa dem. So is sometimes hard foa be local even hea on da mainland.

The beauty of getting older in Hawaii-nei, you cannot go anywhere without seeing ppl you know. I laugh to myself an nobody knows why when malahini asks for directions, (because I have to catch myself every dang time to wonder if the landmarks changed). I really enjoy your program-nice to start the day with a laugh.

Hey Andy, you so funny it’s umbelivable. When I was younger I had no problems with attitude folks. Now that I’m little younger than before I have a big attitude to lolo’s that just don’t get it. I’ve been away from home for the last 26 years in Cali and the Buggas just don’t understand why Hawaii have a 14 day restriction or betta yet no wear mask. Thanks Brah. Mahalo

“Locals” are different now. You donʻt have to have roots to be considered local. Many mainlanders whoʻs kids are born and raised in Hawaii who live in upper middle class to priviledged communties consider themselves “local” Thereʻs got to be a new way to distinguish the difference. Is there an episode covering this?
I grew up from 3 years in Kuli’ou’ou, with the Kalizar, Costa, Pacheco, Lum and Pung families. I was more local than haole by the time I went to kindergarten. Being haole at UH Lab School was not bad, all my friends were local and we never really thought about ethnicities, at least I didn’t. I went mainland for college, Catholic girls school and I was Episcopal (another story), as a haole up there they wanted me to act like them. No way, they were all strange! Luckily there were a few local girls up there to hang out with. Funny the native Hawaiians never got the same treatment I got, with white skin. I came home and have been back attending UH, living in Manoa and now working at UH Manoa campus. In the 20 years I have walked across campus behaviors have changed. Students used to pay attention to their surroundings, now their faces are buried in their cell phones. At crossing areas they continue on, and give side eye at you while YOU wait for them to pass. Sometimes you arrive first and they speed up to cut you off, this is foot traffic for goodness sakes! What’s up with dat? Directions to me are always based on landmarks, cause I can’t remember street names, or just never paid attention cause the landmarks are easier.
