Illustrator and artist Christoph Niemann joins The Art Assignment to give out the challenge of finding the emotion in furniture.
Sarah also looks into art history as she dissects Edward Hopper's Nighthawks with other works, and how emotion can be conveyed beyond figures.
    INSTRUCTIONS - Emotional Furniture
    1. Arrange furniture in a way that conveys envy, melancholy, and confidence
    2. Take 3 photographs, one for each emotion (no figures or faces allowed!)
    3. Upload it to your social media platform of choice using #theartassignment
    4. Fame and glory (your work may be featured in a future episode)

A trick: you can watch series on Kaldrostream. I've been using them for watching lots of of movies lately.

Great assignment. It reminds me of some of Ai Weiwei's works where he just uses furniture like old stools and stack them up in interesting ways. To me those pieces all carry tremendous emotional quality.

Hmm, this has really got me thinking. I'm going to work on reading some emotions into several of the stool works. Let me know if you come up with any yourself.

Ah I just remembered how much I love the Art Assignment as a series. Thank you for making this. How wonderful.

taking out the figures to focus on the inanimate parts of the artworks makes me think of music that has multiple layers. the drums, the melodies, the singer. each part comes together to make the song, but we tend to focus on the words and main melody line. taking them out and listening to the harmonies or just the drum beats, etc can create and entirely different song sometimes even a different mood.
i love assignments, discussion, etc like this one. it makes us look at things differently.

I love this comparison. It also reminds me of the first time I saw a cut of The Fault in Our Stars movie, before any of the music was in. I was unaware before this how much music in movies cues us how to feel. I found the movie brutally sad, and I think part of it is that there wasn't music trying to coerce me to feel that way. (It's still sad with music, I know, but it was WAY more sad.)

The Art Assignment that's a fact. even by just listening to instrumental soundtracks of movies and mentally putting them with the scene invokes emotion.
i suppose a person could say that this assignments helps teach us to see the everyday, inanimate objects in our lives as the background music that builds our emotions in the moment.

Reminds me of Vi Hart's 12 tones video. Even though we're simply observing semi regular disturbances in the air, we chose to give emotion and meaning to them. Kind of like this assignment, things are arranged in a certain way to evoke emotions and meaning. It's simply human to find order in a random array of things. Since we were kids, we personified inanimate objects.

I had once a class of creative writing and we use a lot of of the pictures of Edward Hopper for inspiration to our stories. I really like the melancholy of his paintings.

This video reminds me of an article I read once, about famous paintings without their main characters in them. To me, some of them were down right haunting, It's as if an empty room is somehow more intriguing then a room full of people.

Did it with my friend today, had a lot of fun! Thank you for a fun activity to do!
We might make it a regular thing, since two of the chairs and the lamp ended up in a love drama. The funny thing, my friend saw the lamp as a female, and I saw it as a male. And we also disagreed about the gender of one of the chairs. But the last chair we both agreed that it was a male.
And it challanged us, since it was weird that after we had given the chairs and lamps a personality we ended up with give them a gender.

Not related to the assignment, but have you seen the movie Shirley? It is a story told in 13 paintings by Hopper. It is visually impressive and faszinating, how it captures your attention despite there being little action.

This is hard, I can't get my head around the concept of giving furniture emotions, and I really wanted to do an art assignment D:

    • @theartassignment
      @theartassignment  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I encourage you to persevere! I see it less as giving furniture emotions than finding the emotions that are already there. Perhaps you should sit on this for a while and see what you notice just as you're going about your everyday life?

I used a variation this assignment in a developmental rehearsal today. We are developing a play, and in order to give us a new perspective on the story, today we used two chairs and a blanket to tell our story in ten tableaus, which we photographed. I didn't even realize I was copying this idea, but obviously I was!

Can it be any inanimate object? like books, a t-shirt or my phone? or it needs to be a furniture?

I think the works would be great without the humans, nevertheless I think the atmosphere would still change and alter the perception of the painting.
