I am 34 years old, there has never been a year of my life that I haven't spent at least one day at either Belmont, Aqueduct or Saratoga. This is great stuff. I had no clue they raced the Belmont at the Big A.
LOOK at the horses. They still had that European look to them…leggy, and streamlined like a Greyhound. Obviously because their European blood was only a generation back in those days. Today, they look like streamlined Quarter Horses.
Wow Quadrangle was a huge horse. Roman Brother and Quadrangle were definitely the two best long distance 3 year olds that year, but both were defeated by Kelso in the Jockey Gold Cup later in October.
No they were not, NORTHERN DANCER, was a million miles better, the dancer was hurt, he should have never raced that day, thats for the record, his front right bothered him his whole life, but before the belmont he was really hurting, he ran great to get third.
Northern Dancer! Set the record, Secretariat broke, in the derby. You,my friend, are just plain wrong. Northern Dancer, removed Kelso, from his throne,of five years, in a row, horse of the year, that very year.
The dancer is and was the greatest, he beat roman brother and quadrangle all year long, his front right hoof gave him trouble all year, he had an experimental patch in the Derby, plus a mile and a half was too far for him, hes the greatest horse of the last 100 years, with his record and breeding, no one even close, he brought the BREED forward for the better.
@Dahoss lol he was 3 wide Hartack held him back when he wanted to go at start of race,Hartack lost the race not the Dancer and i found it funny that Hartack was Quadrangles jockey before he switched for the derby
These horses still had that European look to them….leggy and streamlined like a greyhound. Their European bloodlines were only a generation back. Today, most American-breds look like streamlined quarter horses and their European blood is over 6 generations back. It sure makes a difference in the conformation and physique.
That was a wet raw day. Northern Dancer made a bid around the turn but was no match for the top two. Hartack came back to win the finale. I was to angry to bet him
The Big A was a 9 furlong track then as it is now. Reading your comment made me have to watch the race again. I agree with the premise of your question, they may have moved the finish line up just for the Belmont stakes during 1963-1967. The 3-furlong pole is where the race would have started and that would have been right in the middle of the far turn. I don’t notice a cut out in the outside rail at the 3/8 pole for the starting gate (like they do for 1-1/4 races at Belmont) so the horses get to run straight a bit and ease into the turn. It almost looks like they started the race somewhere at the 4 furlong pole so that they horses started the race on a straight. That weird camera angle at the beginning of the race doesn’t help much. I even had to watch videos of current Aqueduct races to see if I could figure it out. I couldn’t. Good question. Or maybe my eyes are just playing tricks on me and it indeed started at the 3/8 pole as it should. The only time that the Belmont States was a Mile and 1/8 was in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic, and in 2020 the first Julie, Triple Crown, was the Belmont stakes
Fred must have been hallucinating. His call is so inaccurate, it was as if he just imagined it. He was always awful, but this call was in a class of its own.

1963-1967
I read about it when I was fourteen.
Most impressive thing in this footage is the grooms , lot different compared to today’s, they make it look easy 👊🏼

Northern Dancer was also very small...

The Dancer was beaten by his jockey Hartack who took him way off the pace and wouldnt let him run when he wanted to go
He couldn't get 12 furlongs, period. He got hit in the head with his pedigree at the 1/8 pole.
The Dancer should have won this one too. Bad ride on a slow pace from the outset.

That is Northern Dancer at 2:02, not Quadrangle.
Quadrangle, was good stock!
I still can't understand today why Northern Dancer didn't win. It doesn't seem right.
He was beaten by his Jockey who took him way off the pace at start of race and when he wanted to run he waited to long pulling back on him
He was hurting, he had quarter crack, his front right hurt him his whole life.
He wasn't bred to get 12 furlongs.

Hartack drove a poor race that day he held the dancer too far back and didnt let him go when he wanted to run until it was too late
@2.30 look at jockey Hartack body language when he is getting instructions
Race held at Aqueduct while Belmont being rebuilt.
Was Aqueduct 1 1/8 miles then? Did they move the finish line for this race? Otherwise, it would have started on the far turn.

That horse looks huge.
Lots great horses have failed at the Belmont.
Yeah? How many Belmonts?

I wish Ron Turcotte had of stayed in Canada and stayed on the Dancer i Feel he would of won the triple crown
That great little horse just didnt have it on this day!
The great Manny Ycaza wins his only triple crown race.
the late woody stephens loved to win the belmont
I was there for every one but 1985. 1986 was a surprise though I didn't know Danzig Connection had done so well in the 1985 Young American.
