    Thank You! Very helpful. Love Your Videos. I had an CAG for over 27 years. I missed her so much, after a few years, I was ready. Everything came together & Remington came into my life. It's amazing to me how much I didn't know. Still have so much to learn. Thank You and Smokey for enriching our lives.

    Loved this! Love your aviary!
    Is Smokey wings clipped? My cockatiels are fully flighted indoors & have destroyed my fiddle leaf fig. I had to move it into my bathroom so birds can't constantly chew on it.
    Another great video! Thank you!

  • @rachelmayrhofer9642

    Curly willow is a favourite of mine. It has natural rooting hormone, so it's really easy to grow and re root into more plants. Very low maintenance, as well. The leaves and twigs are great for chewing on. We have many plants.

      @wingsNpaws  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @rachelmayrhofer9642
      @rachelmayrhofer9642 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      wingsNpaws But, beware, it grows into huge trees, so I wouldn't plant it super close to your house. (We learned that the hard way lol)

    • @emmaurban2274
      @emmaurban2274 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What would happen if it was in a pot in with Smokey? Would the chewing combined with the pot keep it little?

    • @rachelmayrhofer9642
      @rachelmayrhofer9642 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not exactly sure. I expect the plant would be little, but the roots might become root bound.

    I think it is great that you are using bowls to hold plants to make it more natural like and it strikes me that you may grow wisteria or other climbing plants around the outside of the aviary and it will climb up to be a shelter for Smokey. But I think it needs to be done carefully to avoid Smokey’s bites when the wisteria is small.

    I am planning to build an indoor aviary for my bird, and the galvanized after welding info was really valuable. Some people disagree out there but it is the more logical option to build one, otherwise you have to spend a fortune on stainless steel mesh and make the whole thing of building up one by your own not worth it. Thank you very much!!! Like

    Hey, where do you buy your perches from? I really liked your setup. I have a decent sized indoor cage for my grey but I plan to get an outdoor aviary. Have to do some planning first. 👍

  • @jackystar5099
    @jackystar5099 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Been thinking about an outdoor aviary but I live in California so summers are too hot and winters sometimes too cold for parrots. I would need to find a place closer to my house, to keep an eye on my birds, and shady. But the summer and drought has dried up most trees and I don't have enough space to build something to have shade. Hopefully will figure it out soon.

  • @LivingMyBestLifeIAm
    @LivingMyBestLifeIAm 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    My boys liked the potted Hibiscus tree I put inside the aviary for them. In your climate it would likely thrive all year. Here, I have to either bring it indoors or replace it in the spring. I chose the latter for several obvious reasons lol.
    I'm shocked you already have rust. Epic fail on the manufacturers part. I used galvanized wire mesh but to prevent the boys from actually coming into contact with it, I stapled up patio and pool screening all the way around. (same as what we use on windows except it comes in a 6' wide roll). Just an idea for your viewers that have smaller parrots. My birds don't really bother with it at all so it's held up perfectly for two years now. They have enough stuff to climb around on that they rarely climb on the screening.
    Looking forward to seeing what you do in there! A tree branch swing might be nice if Smokes likes to swing.
    Hugs from us to you!
    xxx

    • @LivingMyBestLifeIAm
      @LivingMyBestLifeIAm 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahhh one more thought. Grab one of those Magna-Screens to keep your doorway safe from escape. It won't look terribly out of place as it's just black screening that will magnetically snap shut as you walk thru it. 👍🏻

  • @daekros
    @daekros 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your fiddle leaf fig should be fine outside, and is better off outside than inside anyway.
    Eucalyptus are crunchy and fun plants to have, and grow very well in dry sunny spots, and should do splendidly in California. You can also plant flowers, such as babys tears and impatiens, to liven up the garden and maybe even attract some insects for Smokey to investigate.
    For less sunny spots its safe to have Boston Ferns and Maidenhair ferns. I imagine the Cali sun is quite strong so any very shady, damp spots will be favored by ferns.
    As for the aviary- looks great! Never seen an easier to clean aviary- with a powerhose it would barely take a minute.

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the ideas! I definitely will get a boston fern. As for the maidenhair fern, I did that and Smokey destroyed it within a day.

    Not trying to be mean, just asking an honest question. Aren't African Grey's supposed to be together? I was looking to buy one, but the breeder I was going to use said they needed to be sold in pairs because they were very social birds and got depressed very easily if you only had one. I ended up settling for a Nanday Conure because I don't have room for two big birds.

    Love your videos. Would this Aviary work indoors for a pair of Caiques. I can't afford a stainless cage but I love this size of cage. Any suggestions for the ground? What is the company name?
    Cat grass is an edible plant. Does Smoky forage?

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      She absolutely does forage. I think this aviary would be great for your caiques! The bar spacing would be perfect and it would give them such a huge space to well...do what caiques do. As for a flooring, lots of things can work. Off the top of my head, I think tile or melamine may be easiest to clean. I got it off amazon; I think if you do a search for "paney black aviary", it'll come up.

    Are mosquitoes an issue when it comes to aviaries? Also is it practical to build my own aviary out of hardwood? I figured I could save some cash and give my birdie a bit more space if I went that route rather than buying one outright.

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I take her in at night and during the day, I don't notice any mosquitos. Mosquitos might be a problem depending on where you live, relative humidity, and whether or not you have standing water. Building your own aviary is a great idea and there are resources you can find online that will help you out. Don't let anyone talk you out of building or getting an aviary; it is the best purchase you will ever make for your bird.

    • @wingsNpaws

      She does get kale, spinach, and other veggies on a daily basis to both eat and destroy. She usually will shred and destroy them within minutes so I don't think those plants will last very long with her.

  • @sharg0
    @sharg0 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    A bit of nitpicking (you're a teacher after all if I don't misremember): "All metals rust". No only iron rusts (rust is an iron oxide). Oxidation is what you're thinking of and sometimes that is what we want! (In stainless steel and aluminium it's a very thin oxide layer that inhibits further oxidation.)
    Apart from that, thanks for a nice video (as usua).
    And a question out of curiosity (getting a parrot is not in my current plans): What temperature range is suitable?

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It must have been a long day...you're absolutely right in that rust is only specific to iron and that some metals like pure Al will naturally form a passivation layer of aluminum oxide.
      Regarding the temperature range, most birds can withstand and be comfortable in temperatures in the low 50's. However, the key is acclimation. You simply can't take a bird who's been kept indoors where the temperature is constantly in the 70s and place them outdoors overnight where the temperature is in the low 50s.

    • @sharg0
      @sharg0 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The long day explains it, didn't seems like "you" to make such mistake :-)
      And the temps where about as I expected and here (Sweden) one can't be sure that it will keep above 50F during the night even in the summer (in periods it does). So any ideas I had about in the future building a giant aviary can be scrapped. Besides I will likely be to old when I could realize such plan to get a bird - Not fair to a bird that likely bonds very strongly.

    My meyers and princess of wales do this thing where they move their buts up and down. I taught them to do it on cue. All I have to say is twerk and they start getting down. It's so cute.😊

    Hi ...do u know how to train a parrot, as a free flight in outdoor...

    • @zaindungersi1135
      @zaindungersi1135 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think u should let the parrot know this is a place full of food and water and that that is their house,so they don't fly away,and also other birds can really hurt them and animals like foxes,dogs and even cats can hurt them

    My African Grey,who is called Rustam,loses feathers from his chest,legs and a bit on the side(where the bottom of his wings touch),he is now ,I reckon,30% bald,and the thing is,he likes apples and he eats beans,so he's healthy foodwise,we change his water 3+ times a day,we clean his cage and we regularly let him out where he explores the room and even dares to walk around on the floor,so he isn't skeptical of his surroundings,he is right in front of a window and he gets a lot of sunlight,so I'm guessing he gets a lot of vitamins,and most importantly,he is very talkative and is friendly to me,he doesn't trust me to carry him when not needed,but I can put him on my sleeve if he needs help getting up,which he has no problem with,apart from a bit of precaution,but overall he has no problem with his surroundings and owners,he's clean and gets sunlight and everything,so I don't get why he loses feathers,the thing is,he is now 10 and he started losing feathers at 8.In my opinion,this is because he HATES water,we've given him a bath for him to go in,and he didn't want to go in,(we did leave it in there for days for him to have a chance in getting used to it,which he didn't)we introduced him to showers when he was 5 or so,and he just flew off,he avoids spraying,and from watching ur bath video,he shows all of the things in the list of him not liking water,spraying him is the same,he just avoids it,and most importantly,he refuses to get his feet cleaned,so he could have germs,but I can't clean it because he bites me,my parents don't want him outside and he only has one cage which is not the biggest,but he doesn't have a problem with it,and he also had a lot of toys.PLEASE if anyone reads this and are experts with an African Grey,can u please give me suggestions on what to do,because I think I have to teach him to like water,but I don't know how,please help :/

      ZainZaBeast If you ever see something worrisome in your parrot, don't hesitate, take your bird to the exotic vet nearby. Better safe than sorry. Not worth asking online "experts". Take your bird to an actual expert.

      I think you should teach her,I read that if that happens then if they get scared and try to fly but they never have flew before they could really get hurt.So yeah :P

      He had to teach Smokey how to fly because she used to be clipped. There's probably a video somewhere that shows you how to properly teach your bird how to fly

    • @terunja7
      @terunja7 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe patience is in order. My sweet Kenya, now 24 yrs old, just started flying voluntarily (not just when startled), though he has not been clipped in many years and has lots of free time outside his cage. Also be careful what you wish for! Flighted birds demand a whole new level of vigilance.

      No bird is ever taught to fly. It is instinctual

    • @someonessidechannel1485
      @someonessidechannel1485 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A B
      Sure, and when they have full feathers they can do it. But a clipped bird will try to fly, fall and get hurt, and then be scared to try again because the last time they just fell.

    Great job setting up the aviary! I enjoyed the tour & Smokey looks happy - & cute as usual. Go to a good nursery like Summer Winds (or whatever) & ask for help in picking out year round plants for medium outdoor light.
