Coralline is my favourite book/movie ever and as someone who’s read this book since I was 12. I can say it is rly creepy. However, I guess I got over my fears and it turned into my favourite!!!
I grew up watching coraline, and I read the graphic novel because of her graphic novel vid! I can see how its creepy but at this point I guess I'm just desensitized to the creepiness. It was rlly good tho
@Dale Well it kinda makes sense, because Gaiman likes to write "kids' stories" that really resonate with adults also. I think it's very interesting that mostly adults regard this book as scary. Also I recall my elementary school friends being so spooked by the movie but I was like "ye button-eyes? ok, nextttt" it really didn't phase me lmao. Maybe I had read scarier stuff before... Idk really. Interesting tho
For some reason, I thought The Flat Share was a thriller? Like I thought one of them was a killer and the other was slowly figuring out that they’re sharing their flat with a psychopath?? Where I got this idea from, I have no idea😂
The Coraline movie FREAKS ME OUT. A girl I used to babysit watched it constantly and for months I had nightmares about people with button eyes. The other mother is terrifying.
I dnf'ed Clockwork Angel at about 70% (my first and probably last Cassandra Clare book) and I hated One Day In December. Other than that, everything else has been above average.
Coraline is very creepy, but it's a children's horror novel. That's the point. I love the book and the movie, so I can't even fathom how the graphic novel will be. Worst? I have to completely disagree with that notion.
When I was a kid my bff was OBSESSED with it and we watched it almost every time I came over, so I guess I'm desensitized to it at this point. Its interesting go see how it affects other people who havent read or seen it before
You mentioned that enemies-to-lovers trope is not your favorite book trope... Because of that, I really recommend you read Instant Karma by Marissa Meyer. It just melted my heart. Everything about it was just *chef's kiss*
Finally someone else who marks their DNFs as Read on Goodreads! Lol 😂 I do the same thing because I want it in that mental bucket! Plus if I read a whole bunch of books at 50% shouldn’t that count for something? Lol
I was in a poetry mood. I picked up one, gave it five stars and it became a new favourite. Picked up another, gave it five stars, and it became a new favourite. Decided to pick up The Poetry of Oscar Wilde, because I loved The Picture of Dorian Gray, and thought the writing was beautiful and so poetic, and I made the incorrect assumption that his poetry will be the same. Kicked me right out of the poetry mood, kept me out of it since and I gave it one star.
It drove me crazy how many times you called yourself dumb. You're not dumb, you have honest opinions and that is very much appreciated. I don't know if I have had any books that I hated this year. There was one I didn't finish, couldn't get into it. I think it was called the Sun Sword, I can't remember the author, dont have it on me right this second.
You inspire me to keep reading. Like seriously, I was scrolling through TH-cam trying to find something to watch, and I saw this and I got an urge to read! Thanks so much for making awesome kid appropriate content!
(1) 2 star read (4) 3 star reads (5) 4 star reads and (9) 5 star reads for me! I haven't read much this year but I'm happy it was mostly right up there!
Your feelings on Betrothed, are my feelings on The Night Cirus. If I had friends they'd probably yell at me. I was so not into it I only made it through half the book even though my hubby bought it for me 😶
I love your attention to detail! The countdown calendar on the top right of the video and the fact that you actually change it for every single video is just ❤️❤️❤️
I have an unpopular opinion for my biggest disappointment of this year: The Starless Sea. The writing is beautiful but I just didn't care about any of the characters. I think you had a very short list - the sign of a good reading year!
Girl, its ok to be able to say you don't like something. If anyone has a problem with that than how can they trust you on your reviews. Keep up the great work!
I was so sure that "The Betrothed" will be on this list 😂. But overall, there was not that many books on this list, so I'm happy that your reading year was good! 🥰
I watched Coraline when I was nine and loved it! I never found it creepy but I grew up in a horror loving family. My 1st horror movie was when I was 5😂
Fortunately, there is only 1 book that failed (basically a failed book would have a rating below 3 out of 5), and that book is Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo.
Oh. I actually preferred the last two books in The selection because I like her daughter way more than America. And absolutely loooved The siren. It gives me hope for The bethroted. 😂
I agree with the Betrothed. There was no build up to the relationship, it kinda just happened and I was just like...umm okay? And then the ending threw me for a loop and I feel like I can guess the second book already
If you like the concept of two ppl being in a tight spot in life, having to share a home, and communicating through post-it notes then I HIGHLY recommend Because This Is My First Life on Netflix. So good! Super sweet, touching, funny, lovely, and all the good things a romance story should be. Definitely an instant fav for me. :)
Omg I watched coraline when I was super young. My parents thought it would be a good idea to show it to me when I was like 5 or something. I hid behind the sofa for most of it and wouldn’t sleep for a week. It was scarring. Never saw it again. Completely agree with you.
I’ve read Coraline because you said it was so scary and even as a kid the movie didn’t freak me out & it had the potential to be creepy but didn’t really get there. Is the graphic novel scarier?
I know I'm like 4 months late to the party, but my worst read of 2020 was definitely "Where the Red Fern Grows" by Wilson Rawls. I had to read it for school, so I didn't have high expectations going into it, but I was hoping it would at least be average. My big issue with it is that you knew the ending from the start, so any plot twists along the way were extremely anticlimatic, which for me at least, made it a very unenjoyable read.
You should read between the lines and off the page by Jodi picoult it’s a duo I feel like you would love them , I definitely did it was my first books that showed me I loved reading (I’m in high school)
I feel bad but one of my least favorite books this year was A Song of Wraiths and Ruin, although it was more of a disappointment than actually bad. The top one on this list would probably be Reverie by Ryan La Sala, simply because it literally did not make sense. The whole time reading was just ???????
I watched the movie Coraline for the first time a few months ago with my boyfriend. I legitimately almost started crying and I’m 17. I thought it would be fine cuz it’s a kids movie but nope. So it’s okay Hailey you’re not alone.
I'm so glad someone else didn't like the flatshare! It seemed to fall so flat and the characters were so dull and uninteresting. I was really excited to read it but I physically couldn't finish it. I agree there was absolutely no chemistry and NO SPARKS.
I was also disappointed by the Betrothed. I didn't like the insta-love between Hollis and the love interest. Honestly, at the beginning, I kinda thought the love interest was gonna be the best friend. There are also too many loose ends, and I dont know how she's going to wrap them all up in one book, cause I think it's supposed to be a duology
Oh my God I remember in 6th grade my teacher made us watch coraline. I had watched it when I was little, so I knew I hated it but watching it again I realized how freaking terrifying it is. I had to leave my class I was absolutely terrified but for some reason I remember everyone was freaking obsessed with it. What the heck.
I only DNFed one book this year and it was a goodreads winner called The Five. I just went into it with way different expectations for what it was going to be about, so that's kind of on me, but also the writing did not engage me enough to finish it. I think it would've been more enjoyable if the author took more liberties with the writing and made it into a historical fiction.
I watched Caroline movie back when I was a kid and I HATED IT! How could people sleep after it?! Maybe the reason why I don't like horror genre is this movie...
Really enjoyed The Flatshare, gave it 4 stars, although Leon's POV really put me off. Also, it felt more like a friends to lovers situation, personally, since they were post-it buddies before their romance blossomed. So sad you didn't like it!
I'm currently reading "hiddensee" and I'm not really enjoying it either. I'm not really sure what's going on and I partly think it's because Dirk doesn't know what's going on. He doesn't know where he came from or what he's meant to do with his life. I really like The Nutcracker, so I'm going to push through and finish it. It's also less then 300 pages.
Coraline was the first book in which I enjoyed the movie more than the book. I absolutely loved the animated movie, but dnfed the book after a few pages.. Was very disappointed 😑
My least favorite book this year was From Blood and Ash. I read this in June and I was so excited to get to it because everyone was hyping it up and her White Hot Kiss trilogy is one of my favorites. But I hated the romance and aside from the action scenes, I felt the book was super boring. The last 50 Pages or so had a huge twist that made me consider picking the next book up, but I’ve seen a lot of people say it’s not as good as the first book and after I did not like the first book at all, I think I’ll steer clear of the rest of this series.
Why do I find myself much more entertained hearing about the books you don’t really like ? I love a good rant and differing opinions of very popular books 🥰
My nephew LOVES Coraline, the book and the movie! I honestly hate it so much. I just had to write a huge paper on it and I had to watch the movie and I WAS NOT OKAY after. ugh.
I kissed Alice was at times hard to distinguish the characters but that god better the more the story went and we do see how they became enemies and what all that was. I didn’t like the ending but it did get better in my opinion. I loved the flatshare but I can see where you are coming from with the chemistry because it’s not till like the last quarter of the book that they actually spend time together!
Looking back I didn’t really read a lot of books I hated, just quite a few that disappointed me but weren’t terrible. However, My Favorite Half-Night Stand by Christina Lauren was a highly disappointing DNF
I read Coraline this year too and I just straight up didn't like it. It wasn't scary to me at all and Coraline's reactions to the things that happened were just too nonchalant for someone her age and I found it really hard to believe. Maybe I just shouldn't read children's books as a 21-year-old :/
Hailey great video I love TH-cam book channels I’m an avid reader too and currently reading the third book in the Ravenspire Series have you ever read those they are really good I think you would enjoy them 🙂 Have a Wonderful Day 🙂
My worse book was A Good Girls Guide To Murder. It was a good book but the character has a dog with the same name as mine and stuff happened that I just couldn't finish
I liked I Kissed Alice a lot actually. I gave it 4 stars. But the thing about not being able to keep characters separate for a while was an issue I had with Clap While You Land. And The Flatshare was one i DNFed because the writing style of the way the guy was written wasn't working for me.
I read the novel of Coraline and it creeped me out so much!!! This one sentence “her pale lips mouthed “come back soon” although she said nothing aloud.” 😰😰😰
Technically, Coraline has satisfied its purpose lmao 😂
Im not trying to invalidate your opinion but technically Coraline, as a horror novel, did what it was supposed to do: freak you the fuc out😂
Exactly
It did the job! What else can you asked?
Haven’t watched this yet but I can guess The Betrothed by Kiera Cass is on the list 😂
Tragically 😂😂
