Humanity's dynamics are very confusing in this show. for example, every-time there is an invasion or some sort of alien incursion the military is *nowhere* to be found.

    • @ScionStorm1

The show hasn't really suggested Earth has any big military influence to throw at an alien invasion to begin with. Wondering where something is that they haven't really suggested exists is kind of weird.

I know, but I feel there should be some semblance of it. The human government isn't stupid. I know they know about the invasion of Earth and they should be developing counter-measures in case it happens again because the Crystal Gems cant always be there to babysit them. Besides, there is all that gem tech laying around. No one has ever used that??

Sir JGN- well... Gem technology doesn’t look like it relies on circuits, electronics or anything similar. From the looks of it, it seems similar to programmable metal, which is something only developed recently in real life and considering there wasn’t any world wars in Steven Universe, I would imagine they would have a tougher time trying to figure out programmable crystals.

To be fair to the Steven Universe crew, the borders on this map are the work of Shaun, not the show themselves. Indeed, as far as I can tell, the show has not once shown *any* borders on *any* map, nor mentioned more than a handful of countries - and the story of the "colonization" of Beach City doesn't match any North American colonization (less than 200 years old, yet founded by a sailing ship load of people from across the sea).
Basically, we've gotten a lot of Gem history...not so much human history. So who know's just *how* different things are.

In terms of worldbuilding, I distinctly remember the episode where Jamie cited the place he really wanted to go, to make it big as an actor: KANSAS! It’s funny how it works both as a joke and a bit of worldbuilding, since the creators outside the show did confirm he was speaking the truth. I remember that sentence led to a bunch of interesting theories, suggesting this was perhaps a timeline where the native americans got a better deal from the USA, and/or Manifest Destiny only got so far before stopping in the middle.

As far as alternate history goes, there are a few clues that European settlement happened differently than it did in the real world, including a very strong hint that the Beach City section of the Delmarva peninsula was "discovered" only 200 years ago. And maybe one character's throw-away line about seeking show-biz stardom in Kansas was a weird joke about him, or it was a low-key assurance that California didn't happen in Steven's universe the same way it happened for us.

I really loved the video, it was great to hear you talk about all of this! Sadly it's something that isn't discussed often. However, just a note, we don't know a lot about Steven Universe's alternate Earth. The extent of what we know is that map in the moon base, a few US states, and a bit from the Crewniverse themselves. The artist seems to have lot of artistic liberties with the map. We truly don't know how deep this world building goes, so a lot of what you said about how Human history seems unchanged could very well be completely different.

On the political scale and due to Rebecca saying WWII didn't happen I have been led to assume that in SU's timeline the Central powers were victorious in WWI, but also due to the IRL CP being at a member skill disadvantage (only skillful belligerents being Germany and A-H) I am also led to believe that their members were different, Im putting Germany and A-H the same due to them being essential for the war to happen in the first place, and judging from the giant sea in Russia this means that the Hordes didn't exist, which resulting to the absence of 1) Russians , which if did not exist then the CP could afford to be focused ENTIRELY on the western front, and 2) Turks, Seljuks, Ottos and the bunch
Which I'd assume that that results to the Byzantine Empire surviving past it's irl downfall
And if the CP won WWI then the dominant ideology in the SU world is imperialism and the dominant goverment type is a monarchy
Which would essentialy make the U.S a big modern HRE, with the separate fully autonomous monarchies making up the bigger nation
Jus' my theory, but I thought it was worth sharing

Austria-Hungary's status as a competent military power is highly debatable, too. They were crippled by the byzantine web that was their communication and military orders system, not to mention underfunding due to the Hungarians constantly vetoing any expansion of funding of the k.u.k Armee.

There's a show that aired in the UK called the spartical project. It's a show set in a world where everyone above the age of 16 disappeared. It followed a group of kids; it showed the consequences of everyone in the working age vanishing, like no electricity, small gangs forming to raid buildings ,as there are no authorities, cars crashed in the middle of the street as the driver vanished and in the later seasons they actually acknowledge that food would be an issue, so they stay and work off the farm for food. It wasn't a great show, as they had a low budget and your working with child actors around the age of 7. But it's a very interesting concept I wish people talked about the other possible implications in real life.

And it still brings many questions such as how can the internet exist if WW2 never existed? In the episode "Maximum Capacity" (Season 1, Episode 43), there's a scene where a totem pole made up of the Temple Fusion (a fusion of Rose Quartz, Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl), a corrupted gem known as the "Big Bird" and some other unknown gem is seen at Steven's dad (Greg) basement.
This pretty much confirms the ancient worshipping of gems as goddesses or deities.

Ah, a definition video. Those are usually fun...for me and maybe three other people.
I'm not sure it's fair to call Steven Universe's worldbuilding flawed because it doesn't focus on the changes in human history. The show focuses much more on the Gems, on Homeworld culture and the Gem war and so on, than it does on anything human. Which brings me to another point--I'm not sure how they could show the audience more earthly worldbuilding in a satisfying way. Just about the only way I can think of would be to put the information on a website or in a book or something. But changing the world too much would mess with symbols, coding, etc too much for too little benefit for the final product. So Mrs. Sugar threw in enough changes to make it clear that the Gems had an impact on history (aside from England having a Garnet accent) and no more.
Steven Universe is a crummy alternate history, that much is true. But I'm not sure it makes sense to talk about the show _as a whole,_ or even its worldbuilding as a whole, through that lens.

POD consequences aside, I think that it's not that impossible to imagine that Russians would have sailed the Tunguska Sea. Cossacks were the ones doing OTL eastward expansion in Russia's name - and they had enough experience with marintime technology to raid Constantinople and Turkey at large. By the 1700s, Russia had their own fleet, and even sent their own expeditions to the far east. There is a reason why Bering strait is named as such.
But even then, Chinese would probably colonize the area earlier than the Russians. With the absence of the steppe nomads and with vast sea around it, some coastal towns would be estabilished. All in all, this map is just wrong and shouldn't be taken seriously.

Coming from an SU fan here
Yes, SU is an alternate history show, but it’s not really the focus
The main focus is on the gems, what their like and how homeworld functions instead of most of the human characters, it does kinda suck how they almost never explore how the gems actually changed human history itself that much aside from in a few episodes where it’s mainly just stuff like “this state/region is named differently” or “colonization happened way later”. Maybe they should make something like that a spin off but I don’t think it would be too enjoyable.
Overall calling SU an alternate history show would be like calling The Hateful Eight a Christmas Movie, a better category for Steven Universe’s genre would overall just be science fantasy

That’s what Earth looked like when she first arrived there to begin her very first colonization. Pink Diamond is supposed to spectate progress on Earth from the Moon Base but later on began to have plans of her own for the planet. The Base was abandoned thousands of years ago and so none of the maps in it’s data had been upgraded at all since it’s been used. I can tell you that this map is a fan creation based on rough images. It is true that history has been altered. But to what degree has never been fully explained. It is lovely hearing people discuss this. It doesn't come up enough.

I do feel like the whole reason for the new history of the earth in SU is ultimately caused by the gems themselves, because THINK about it, they were super powered aliens who saw racism and wars happening on earth, of course they had to get involved and changed it. Though I can see how it’s all confusing, but just think the fact that the gems made a change into the planet and met so many different figures in history.

I say let the paralisms lie, at least in the borders. The assumption that things would have to turn out vastly differently always bugs me. It’s a one in million chance that our world would turn out the way it did in our would, however it’s also a one in a million chance that it would turnout nearly the same on a world with different starting conditions. And therefore are not worth worrying about to me.
Further just because the greater details are similar, doesn’t mean the finer details are the same as well.

Surely humans would have been advance in this universe, due to the scattered gem technology, they would study gem technology and reverse engineer it. Also WW2 had to happen in this universe, modern technology would not exist, but some how the Cold War happened in this universe, that might explain why there is mobile phones and laptops in SU, Nukes might exist because of the Cold War but we have no confirmation we might have to ask the creators of SU at Comic Con.

The limitations of worldbuilding in this series, despite the PoD and geography, is probably due to the fact that the map is most likely just stylised and not meant to be a result of gem activity on Earth. Great video though.

  • @TheSpearkan

I would also make the following arguments:
Spain and Portugal would not exist in this timeline as the Umayyad Caliphate wouldn't have been able to reach Ibera through a nonexistent Strait of Gibraltar, hence no Reconquista. instead the Iberian Penninsula would likely be a balkanised mess of Visigothic nations or some evolution of the culture, Seville would become the new Gibraltar in this timeline due to it covering the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, this also means the Netherlands either does not exist or is part of the HRE and/or France
Depending on exact location, it could also be possible that the Ottoman Empire wouldn't exist either as the Turkic peoples are likely to have originated either in Mongolia or another area of Central Asia that could not be under the Tunguska Sea, without them the Balkans stay independent and the nations of the Kievan Rus are swept by Poland (considering a lack of Genghis Khan already mentioned)

One slight problem with this map. In historical friction, it's revealed that Beach City was founded two hundred years ago, but the expedition that led to it's founding was nearly halted by the crystal gems, warning that the land they were travelling to wasn't safe for humans. Which means North America at least WASN'T INHABITED BY HUMANS TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO. So the Us wouldn't have existed at this point.

If it has not been suggested to you already I'd be interested in your analysis of the anime/manga/light novel titled "Youjo Senki" aka "Saga of Tanya the Evil". It's an alternate World War I that includes magic and military mages. However the use of magic has limitations with technologically augmented mages primarily being used as an air force. They do the jobs that would normally be done by tactical and reconnaissance aircraft. Other than that the war takes place in an alternate world with stand ins for the countries of our timeline.

I do find the alternate history interesting, although it's not really explored in show. The show mainly focuses on the small town of Beach city and a number of gem ruins. When they do leave town they normally don't talk to anyone, so we don't really know how much the world has changed.
Something to be noted is the monsters wondering about the world for the past 5,000 years. They don't breed, so their numbers are locked and slowly going down as they are hunted and bubbled, but there would have to be quite a lot of them for them to still show up as much as they do after all this time. Granted some have shown that they would rather hide then fight.
Regarding South America, it does seem likely Africa reached there by island hopping in much the same way the Vikings did to get to North America. However the entire series seems to be viewed from the eyes of Steven, we never see anything he wasn't around to view. Flashbacks are told to him, or in some cases shown. Since he has never been to South America (as far as I can tell) we haven't really seen how cultures have shaped. They have used the warp pads to get around the world. However when they do they don't seem to talk to the local humans.

  • @warhorse5152
    @warhorse5152 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'll make an alternate timeline similar to ours. For example.....
    *1945*
WW2: Does happen in Steven Universe. The way I imagine it is, Nazi Germany will be the first to experiment with gem tech. They do power "some" weapons and won most battles against alied states. The Japanese will even try training corrupted gem monsters to track down and destroy US camps and naval ships. Some gem monsters are even traded for gem weapons. Until rose finds out and has to keep every last human from getting hurt by the gem tech ( or hurt themselves by getting attacked by corrupted gems)
The result was the little boy & fat man nuke (still earth tech) the axis thought this was gem tech and was completely terrified, especially Rose Quartz (Pink Diamond). In this timeline Rose actually meets Hitler on his last day alive. He tried to have this mysterious large woman blown to bits, only for her to accidentally form into the even larger, more radiant Pink Diamond. Hitler is alured yet horrified as he aims his mp40 at her head. She takes his gun, bends the barrel, then gives it back. The large pink woman looks through the dictator's with intense, burning pink eyes. She then whispers something in his ear that results in his suicide.
She goes back as rose, free some holocaust prisoners along the way and truly realized how dangerous yet similar humans really are.........
    *Cold War*
    *1948- late 1949*
Most gem tech And monsters has been confiscated by alied forces[U.S, England,Russia,ETC] and later experimented with.
Soviet Russian scientists will reverse engineer gem weapons and vehicles (thought NOT as advanced due to the conditions of political issues with communism leading up to accidental deaths with lack of understanding)
U.S. In the atomic age, A government facility known as AREA 51 also experiment with gem tech tries extensively finding a cure for a handful corrupted gem monsters left in the war in return from Rose and the gems helping out in the war (thought they we're very unsuccessful)
    *1950-1953*
    Korean war.
Russia supplies North Korea with Gem weapons, vehicles and monsters to invade south. Despite the advanced technology, UN(with the "aid" of the CGs) still battles with NK. Stalin is killed by a escaped corrupted gem after she went through a horrific experiment. Leading to the eventual stand still between North and South Korea.
South Korean locals has reported sightings of a 30ft Blue woman in a cloak, kneeling towards a pink palaquin. Over 160 reported missing around that area.
    *1961*
It happened, NASA launches Neil Armstrong to the moon, after Neil places the flag like in our time. He see something that's NOT part of the moon, something alien. He sees Pink Diamond's Base, finds a way in, and takes pictures. He takes pictures of the Diamond murals. Then heads back to earth where Pink Diamond's base and the pictures becomes classified and taken in AREA 51. 2 years later John Fitzgerald Kennedy, US President, Best friend of Rose Quartz has been assassinated.
    1986
GEM based tech used to power Chernobyl goes wrong resulting in most of Russia to disappear off the face of the earth.
    July - December 2018
Skipping to present day.( Single PALE rose - legs from here to homeworld)
Due to the The Diamond incident in New Jersey, 260 armed marine are launched in space along with the pink leg ship. Ariving on homeworld, there's waves of gems unlike the ones they've seen on earth.
