This was a John Williams tribute. He obviously wrote this for an orchestra, so they HAD to be there, it was just an honor for Pentatonix to be asked to participate! Scott even said it wasn't about them, they were so honored to be a part of it.
You're the first reactor to mention Kevin doing the lightsaber sounds, though, good job.

Pentatonix has arranged and performed a classical piece all by themselves and their arrangement won them their 2nd Grammy. Acapella breaks the barriers by it's very nature and an orchestra does not have to be present for an Acapella group to perform an instrumental piece typically performed by an orchestra in order for it to be appropriate because of the genre. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy has always been performed by an orchestra, but that didn't stop Pentatonix from receiving accolades when doing it with just their voices.

They got trolled, hardcore. I saw a video of a reporter chasing Scott through an airport, accusing them of not being true to a capella, because they sang with the orchestra. Scott just said that they were proud to be asked to be part of the tribute.

I actually think this was an amazing collaboration. Don't get me wrong, I am a pure pentaholic through and through and always want their pure, unadulterated sound. However, this was a tribute to John Williams, who is known for his sweeping orchestral scores. Pentatonix honored the iconic melody lines, and the orchestra honored the epic nature of his work. As Scott said when they received criticism, it wasn't about Pentatonix, it was about John Williams.

Couldn't agree with you more. Some people apparently either had different expectations, or simply thought that this was a Pentatonix performance, instead of a tribute to John Williams - and how could you have a tribute to John Williams without that full orchestra playing, something he's done so well in so many movie scores? While I loved the portion where PTX was by themselves, and have no doubt they could have done an entire piece without the orchestra, considering the occasion I don't mind the orchestra that much.

Common opinion. But it was a John Williams tribute, and John Williams was there conducting the orchestra. So, it makes sense. TMZ approached Scott after this performance and said the same thing.

I think Pentatonix responded admirably to what was asked of them, and who would turn down an opportunity like that. I still secretly agree with you, but wow, they pulled it off magnificently.

They definitely COULD have done this justice on their own. We've seen them perform "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" live and they slayed it! It was their own Grammy Award winning vocal arrangement of a classical piece.. and their arrangement was so outstanding that a new category was created in order to give them an award for it!
For this number, they were invited to do a collaboration with a symphony orchestra and they were honored to accept. They were rewarded for their collaboration with scorn and ridicule for being "pretenders". A so called "Acapella" group performing along to instruments. TMZ really went after them. grrrrr... Thanks for your reaction! Every other reactor I've seen react to this shared your sentiments, as do I.
I think you're going to enjoy the next Sing-Off performance! Rock! You got the rhythm, and the bass.. and some spot on vocals! I love it! ❤️ 😀 and a little FYI, Kirstie really was ill at the time. Unlike the "full-on disagreement" they claimed to have while arranging the Brittney Medley, her being ill wasn't fake drama the show's producers stuck in there. Can't wait!

Had it not been a tribute to John Williams it may have been appropriate to just be Pentatonix, but this was about him and not them. Plus, John was conducting. That is why the orchestra was there, so he could conduct. I would have loved to see them do it maybe on their channel as a video with just them.

The only thing better than listening to Pentatonix sing by themselves is listening Pentatonix backed up by a full symphony orchestra.

A TRUE PENTAHOLIC.. WE hate having any instruments behind them. Except for for Kevin and Beyonce (The cello)

I've seen some Reactors using a filter that makes the original video look foggy, but you can still see it all. Maybe you could try that?

Very common opinion on this 👍 so I typically just listen to the part before the orchestra pops in 😂

You can imagine how they would sound without the orchestra because you can still clearly hear them. I wish someone would try to separate the voices from the orchestra.
I don't really mind the orchestra here, not like the L.A. concerts they once did where the orchestra annoyed the hell out of me.

  • @bartonbagnes4605

The orchestra wasn't necessary. I wouldn't say it hurt them, they did a great job harmonizing with it, it just didn't improve it.wr In Voiceplay's "Acatop 10 Movie Themes", that you already reacted to, at least 8/10 of the movies are by John Williams, so it's kind of a tribute to John Williams as well. I think the same could be said for Voctive's "Great Movie Theme Song Medley"/, which you have also already reacted to.

If you haven't done it yet, you should do Voctave's tribute to John Williams. It's fantastic. It's caused their great movie medley, all John Williams music. Fabulous.

    • @janhankins911
      @janhankins911 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Oops--autocorrect--"called" (not caused). And the intro music was Jaws, Superman (the old one with Christopher Reeve--an old movie), then Raiders of the Lost Ark/Indiana Jones movies. Voctave does include ET (and many others such as Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, and others).

A lot of people say what you did about preferring one or the other, not both. (PTX & Orchestra).

  • @davidbangtson3109

I'd heard this several times before and completely agree with you that the piece fell flat through no fault of PTX, who I am sure were just doing what they were told to do.

To me, Pentatonix shouldn't have been there. Not in any way their fault of course, it just wasn't a very good idea for whoever planned the event. Seemed to me to be very random and out of place. Why throw in an acapella group for something like this? Their voices didn't meld well with the score and sound of it all. All that being said though, who can say you were introduced by Harrison Ford, that's right!
