@@AthensLaser Bruh... You say gays are bad, but back in ancient Greece gay people are very normal, it was no shame to be gay. I feel you're kinda homophobic
I normally don’t comment a lot but this time I had to! Again an amazing video, in which you also explained the political situation ancient Greece was in. I really hope that you will continue this “pre-Alexander warfare in Greece” series, because I (as you can probably tell by my name) love Greek history!

Amazing videos. You have a perfect balance with being concise while also giving viewers enough information to perfectly understand the events leading up to it. I would love to see more content from stuff like the Peloponnesian war, Roman hegemony, or Byzantine Wars.
As always a great detailed video of high quality. Being Greek myself, the only thing I would like to mention, is one detail about these 300 "lovers". Unfortunately in English there is no exact word to describe the different ways that the ancient Greeks used for the word "lovers". So I'll try to make it as clear as possible. There are many aspects of the goddess Aphrodite. One of them is the so called "Pandemos", translating roughly "for all folk". This aspect is about love in physical ways like lust and wanting to have sex with someone. Another aspect though is "Ourania" meaning heavenly. And it has nothing to do with physical contact, but with the deep connection and communication between 2 people. So not all hoplites of the sacred band were necessarily couples. Does that mean there were all heterosexuals? Of course not. But neither does it mean they were all homosexuals. I respect your time and effort and I wanted to share this with all your viewers. And of course this is not an assault to anyone. We are all people after all!
very well said. I had to do ancient greek and latin in my school and was going to write something similar but you have put it so very well. It is probably also important to point out that heterosexuals would fight alongside homosexual with no judgement.
Yes I think there is a potential mistranslation for the word "lover" which might have been used more in the context with mate, comrade, best friend, etc.
Are you trying to explain a word in greek something like amateur ? Greek have mainly two words for love and english just one. Count how many words one could find in greek related to the sea. I have stopped counting. Do not bother man. Bad people are much more evil while being educated than the rest uneducated as i ve been told

To be honest pelopidas must have been glad to meet that spartan column which he beat, as it enabled him to come home with news that he had a victory[although small] rather than the gloom of a failed missions which might have lowered morale in the city of thebes :P
I appreciate that in a time when everyone thinks they should inject their politics or opinions into literally everything, that this is simply being presented as close to historical fact as possible. These are more informative and well done than my 4 years of history lectures in college.
The Sacred of Band Thebes, was also the best Christian pop rock band of Thebes at the time - didn't get a lot of traction with the locals, Christianity not having been founded yet, but still appreciated as a hometown band.
i always liked the peloponnesian war lectures which were done by prof ken harl , explaining around about the conflict between spartan and athens and then read the david eddings books about the thebens at leutra but this sets the scene about why the thebens got so upset about the spartans leaving the garrison and the actions around it during that time :D
"For in all the great wars there had ever been against Greeks or barbarians, the Spartans were never before beaten by a smaller company than their own; nor, indeed, in a set battle, when their number was equal. Hence their courage was thought irresistible, and their high repute before the battle made a conquest already of enemies, who thought themselves no match for the men of Sparta even on equal terms. But this battle first taught the other Greeks, that not only Eurotas, or the country between Babyce and Cnacion, breeds men of courage and resolution; but that where the youth are ashamed of baseness, and ready to venture in a good cause, where they fly disgrace more than danger, there, wherever it be, are found the bravest and most formidable opponents." - Plutarch
Great video, love your narration. But I'd recommend for you to do orderly series (in this case First Greco-Persian wars, then Peloponesian War and then Corinthian War), that way your subscribers will be more invested to see your next video about the subject
Marching around Lake Copais was a brilliant move. The garrison of Orchomenus probably wouldn't expect a Theban attack from the north since Thebes is to the south, and Pelopidas' army wouldn't have to cross the river south of Orchomenus which would have been a natural defensive barrier.
Yes it it shows the commander had good instincts when he chose to withdraw after forcing the Spartan's off the field since he knew oechomenu's garrison could possible pursue and attack their rear, that this was a minor skirmish and it was better to preserve his forces for a more critical campaign.
