  • @elephantmarch
    @elephantmarch 10 ปีที่แล้ว +61

    Popular misconception: Pandas are NOT bad at breeding. CAPTIVE pandas are bad at breeding; And no worse then many large fauna like elephants or orangutans. Wild Pandas don't breed in huge numbers, but that's because they are solitary, territorial and have no natural predators. One Panda keeps a large area of forest pruned and fertilized quite effectively, rather in the same one one tiger keeps the herd numbers in check. Really protecting and expanding old bamboo forests is the best thing to help Pandas: AND countless other flora and fauna just as vulnerable, and for the same reason

    • @perraultfl
      @perraultfl 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      William Bradford and their ONLY fertile 3 Three days a Year ! Can U believe it? :)

    • @thehantavirus
      @thehantavirus 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Andrea Perrault thats because in captivity they are in unnatural settings, they are crowded around each other. The bamboo offers little nutrition, which is why they are active in the winter.

    • @elephantmarch
      @elephantmarch 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +lolaz wabby Indeed. AND Andrea, there's an important reason for that: pandas have no natural enemies, and you only need one adult per forest to keep bamboo pruned and redistributed. Therefore the low fertility forces males to move around a lot to find a female in heat: thus preventing indbreeding. Studies show the slowly increasing wild Panda numbers have stayed genetically healthy, because they have to move around a lot to find a mate

    • @thehantavirus
      @thehantavirus 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      because bamboo have low nutrinal value they cant actually hibernate/or torpor.

    • @elephantmarch
      @elephantmarch 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +lolaz wabby that too yes: but they're the only animal in most of China that eats the whole stock, so without them bamboo would overgrow and wither at the same time, thus creating unhealthy stretches of time with not mature bamboo. Pandas DO occasionally eat other things like small animals, but anything else they would eat is just as dependent on the bamboo forests as Pandas are; Pandas might need bamboo but bamboo needs Pandas.

    I'm just grateful with the work nowadays China is doing to preserve this golden animal, I love pandas and we have to try whatever that are in our hands to save more species, sadly, the biggest predator in the planet is the human being. We all live here, in the same place and there's no other sustainable planet to move, even if it does, it wouldn't have the same treasure as what we have in Earth.

    Dear davisadmisistration,
    Panda bears can be violent a little but mostly they are calm, peaceful animals not intending to harm each other.
    That means you are right in a way
    Hannah

    • @jasonvoorhees5180
      @jasonvoorhees5180 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hannah Zhang what exactly are you trying to say ? Even the calmest animals have an aggressive side no matter how "cute" they are and yes that includes pandas. "Can be aggressive a little" is just a way to preserve the dopey gentle plush toy animal we say in popular culture. The reality is in the wild fights may be rarely witnessed or even rarely occur but it dosent mean both individuals are trying their best not to harm each other but more rather avoid themselves being harmed. Whales are calm for the most part when they're traveling but in the breeding season when humpbacks gather in the main Hawaiian islands bulls bash and ram each other repeatedly in combat to win the affections of a female.
