- Join me photographing some good ol' black and white around the beautiful setting of Paris, a place I have been going to all my life, being half french! It's the original home of street photography, and has so much to offer. I am joined this episode by special guests Matt Stuart, Alixe Lay and Éléonore Simon.

Alan's appeal--besides his astounding work--is his ability to make photography fun. The sense of playfulness in these videos is a welcome departure from that self-serious vibe we sometimes fall into. Thank you for this channel.
So true....😊👍
Photograph is supposed to be fun. It's not brain surgery or building a walkway at the Hyatt Regency in Kansas City. A mistake has minimal consequence in photography.
💯! He is amazing
Best street photography video i have seen all year, juste merveilleux 😊
ahh fantastique!
Leica Sun! Really enjoying your videos Alan and thanks for introducing us to other talented photographers. Merry Christmas!
Really great vid ..nice one
Leica Sun 🙌🏼
I like her sun
In France the photographer owns the copyright of his photo.
There is the artistic freedom in public places, which means you can photograph whoever you want.
Freedom of artistic expression takes precedence over the simple desire of a person who does not wish to see their image broadcast.
After publication, the person photographed can have the distribution of a photo condemned:
- when the image of the person is contrary to their dignity
- when the person demonstrates that the broadcast causes “particularly serious consequences”
thx for this clarification! ^^
That's true. We're just grumpy Parisians :D
Hi Alan, No non non, the copyright belongs to the photographer in France...it's called "les Droits d'auteur.." so what you claim at 5:48 is totally incorrect...
Also you do have a freedom of artistic expression and/or freedom to inform (ie journalism) to take pictures in the street of people and as such as long as you don't photographe someone in a private place but in a public place and on the condition that it is not an infringement of their human dignity and that the picture can't cause prejudice to them.
I'm both French & British but have lived and worked as a photographer in France most of my adult life...
This is such a relief! An a fantastic way to explain it. This always makes me so nervous..I think it's similar in Switzerland. Anyone happens to know more?😅
If you speak French there are several videos by lawyers who explain it.. look for droits à l’image and droits d’auteur @@ouna2893
Very enlightening comment. Would you know if people seated at a cafe's outdoor tables be considered private? If outside the cafe is ok, what about inside? Are these private or public places when it comes to photography?
Public is considered anywhere where the public can access unimpeded. So café terrace or interior is fair game.. unless it’s a private event, and then if you are invited l guess you just need to ask..@@AlexSegre
@@garethdwatkins Thank you for clarifying this point. It's good to know how they differentiate and seems to make sense.
Hilarious + informative video = great combo. Champagne + absinthe = (you apparently learned) bad idea gone wrong. Moved to France last year. The people may be aware of the camera and proprietary about their image, but there was a major photography exhibit in almost every city we have visited and I have even found that people and even cars will sometimes stop so as not to interrupt my shot. Magnifique!
Much appreciated! You are absolutely right regarding the drinks. I have found Paris a very agreeable place to photograph, as you said, as long as politeness is extended it is returned in my experience.
7:51 so perfect and funny. This is my favorite new photography channel of 2023, it has it all: humor, great guests, amazing advice, beautiful images. Thanks, Alan.
Leica ... Sun :)))) ... great photos and fun to watch, like always
As a French, I almost had a stroke when I saw you bite the baguette in the middle. I am not sure I will ever recover from this vision of hell. I never suspected such violence to exist.
If that upset your French heritage, no wonder France lags behind..
Amazing content as always. It's so inspiring. What I think it's great of your videos is that they are not a tutorial. They just show your process (in a very funny way) and I get inspiration to go out and take my photos and develop my own process. Thanks and cheers from Italy.
Fantastic photography, along with a fantastic sense of humor.
Leica Sun! Fantastic video. Funny, I was thinking as I watched that your videos are the perfect balance of photography gold and Top Gear humor, and then you showed your video inspiration !!
So you're considering moving to Paris and staying with us? That's great! Your videos are so entertaining and inspiring, with amazing photos. And your British humor is just the cherry on top!
Is he English? His accent doesn't seem to be an English one. His last name seems like a German one.
His accent is very British, @@Anon54387 🤐
Leica. Sun. :)
You make the only fun and lighthearted street photography videos. Lots of laughs every time I watch one. Never change 🙏
Thank you for introducing Matt Stuart. I hadn't heard of him and went down a rabbit hole learning about his work and buying his book on street photography.
Super fun, informative, and inspiring video. Perhaps one of the best in the series. Thanks for your hard work putting this together.
Fujifilm - Sun 😂😂. sorry, can't help it. In love with Fuji 😊
Haha yes, they're also great cameras!
@georgevirgilcornea6630 Did your chant work? I hope so as I’m invested in Fuji too. Maybe I can invoke the Leica light chant when using Panasonic Leica lenses. I hope that works.
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
You've become my favorite TH-cam photography channel. So much good info presented in an entertaining fashion. I'm curious, do you take precautions to protect your camera/lens when shooting in the rain?
Leica Sun is my new spirit animal
Am I the only one that spotted the cheeky placement of Mona Lisa's baguette in the opening scene 😂
Mind you I was watching on a 65" tv.
A Brit in Paris
Hola Alan your video is top, finally a different format with humor, I've been following you on social media for a long time and find your street photography super thanks.
Ps: I think your book Metropolis is great, it has an honorable place in my showcase.
I'm a landscape photographer and have never done street photography. But your video got a new subscriber today - loved it.
The best photographer have a artistic background painting etc , they understand texture- light & dark - plus subject matter. Having a good eye 👁 help.
I'm flying to Paris tomorrow, there for 3 days. What does it mean when subjects(and the Eiffel Tower) is copyrighted? I'm just a hobbyist photographer.
Hi Alan, loving your work and what you're doing for TH-cam Land, but your statements regarding copyright are not quite accurate.
As of last year, I think, EU passed a law that made it illegal to actually TAKE a photo of somebody without prior consent no matter if you are in public or not.
So yes, basically all your vacation pictures are evidence of misdemeanor....
(Trust a bunch of old white men to mess up everything...)
So yes, this law has effectively killed street photography here in Europe, as sad as it is.
I may be wrong, but I urge caution anyway if taking pictures of people and putting them online, this might land you in some serious legal trouble.
The legal assumption that anyone in public is fair game is not a thing in Europe.
Also, the term "copyright" as a legal entity is waaay different here than it is outside the EU.
Leica...SUN! I'm debating how, and if to start a TH-cam channel and coming across yours is so inspiring. I love the hilarity it's so nice to breathe that breath of fresh air. Not to mention I love your photos and editing style. Copy cat coming at you soon. ;)
Entertaining but I was disappointed to see Alan staging his "decisive moment" photo by instructing his subject to walk slowly up the stairs while he took his photo. There is another noted Paris street photographer that promotes the use of a multiple exposure burst to capture her 'decisive moment" photos. I might be wrong but I don't think Henri Cartier-Bresson would approve of either method.
Dear Alan. There is a beautiful film, which called Paris after midnight, so beautiful film, my advice you to see it.
Love your sense of humor while getting a great lesson in photography. Keep up the good work. I love your videos.
Try Absinthe | Champagne | Sugar Cube for the ultimate hangover 🔥
Like a son. 😄🤭🤔 in love with leica m11 monochrome! Please leica gods, send me one to play with, like a son that I Am. 🙏🏻
Interesting. So does this mean I should get anyone to sign a model release if I'm posting on social media? I'm collaborating with some people while in Paris and want to make sure I know the rules!
Leica Sun! Greetins from Brazil. That was quite nice, Alan.
Poor baguette, doesn't deserve to be eaten this way :-). Keep practising the French habits Alan !
Great videos and they're very helpful especially since I have my first Leica m coming and need all the help I can get.
Pretty not too bad video. May have bought this rapscallion's book today.
Leica. Sun. One day, I hope to make it to Paris and incant the sun, Leicas I will never own and annoy French people with my camera.
I was always on le fence with Alans work. Then just yesterday I was told the story of a whole load of books melting on a Dubai runway, followed by watching these timeless tips on blending in with les gens ordinaires de Paris. I'm now hooked and look forward to learning how to blend in in other places like Wigan & Mablethorpe. il est bon vivant!!!!
I like the Cartier Santos detail ;) keep it French. Cheers from Paris ❤
At least your having fun. Which is what it should be.😊
I am really curious what shoes you wear walking around so much on heavy rain?
An amazing photographer and also entertaining!!! But don’t let the relaxed manner fool you, he is one of the most talented photographers of our time….
Completely bonkers, but very enjoyable.
Oh please, yes! Come to France, you're so ''rigolo''!
Nothing makes me want to go out and take photos like your videos!
''liiiike a son. liiiike a son. liiiike a son''. Yep, it works! Thx Alan.
Witty, funny, humoristic - that's great amusement;-)) But persuading advertising is a wrong way to communicate: Why hyping 'Leica' so obstrusively - it's a notorious inconsistence because of being somehow imposed, spasmodic. It isn't necessary hyping Leica as the only one when looking at st. ph. pictures from Paris, one of the most easygoing metropolitan cities worldwide. I like Leica, but I like e.g. Fuji, and a great pretty bunch of alternative gear, too. @philosimot
Fun video, you should have a millions subscribers...
Alan keen eye for composition and storytelling through images is truly inspiring. Every frame tells a story, making the streets of Paris come alive through his lens. 🖤❤️
The french shot themselves in the foot with such photo copyright laws.
Absolutely unhinged. Biting a baguette right in the middle.
Treh-bhye mehsyu Alan
Every one of these videos is just so good and I love the sillyness with amazing pictures mixed in
A really great post. Great sense of humour too!! 👏👏👏
Alan, do you have any issues wearing glasses and using the rangefinder?
oh my god Alan.... at 2:40 you start eating THE Baguette by the middle...are you serious matte! Always by LE Quignon bordel ! Great video anyway :D
Right? He can mock us all day long, but NEVER eat Ze baguette by the middle ahah

Trop bien !!!

LEICA SUN ☀️
Alan, for a guy who takes incredible artistic photos, I love how much fun you have. A reminder that you can take something serious while having fun. Especially love the lit croissant. Kudos to you and thank you.
Vidéo très sympa and always good/smart advices. Bravo Alan!
London sun,London sun, London sun.
No it’s not working!!!
similar humour as Steve McCurry.
12:44 what focal length was used to shoot that scene?
J'ai ri et beaucoup appris. Merci Monsieur Schaller.
as a french we like baguette and croissant
Alen just want to say thank you. It is not just the fantastic photography it is you that put a smile on my face.
Leica sun 🙌. So fun and Inspiring!!
J'aime votre PG Tips Monsieur! Loved it.
This is the only channel that has actually captured what photography is like inside of circle of (photo) friends. Sometimes we grab a coffee, sometimes a drink (or 10), most of the time we're laughing and sometimes when we're lucky enough we get some great photos.
The absolute greatest theme tune of any channel.
Thank you Alan, great content.
I really enjoyed that, thanks!!
I'm always looking at it. Thank you for teaching me the technique and composition of taking good pictures.
I am glad you are enjoying the channel :)
It’s pronounced Day-cart not Dez-cartez. Otherwise great content.
Wow, that went right over your head. He knows that. That whole bit was tongue in cheek.
Leica… Sun…😂😂😂
Leica sun!
Very benny hill but I do like you...

You've got to like a Leica.
too much talking mate
Totes love the ciggie in the intro! FMD Paris is just so full of smokers it's a nightmare. Love your pics. Love your humor :) Have a great day.
