Zamboanga is one of the few cities that mostly retained their Spanish colonial architecture. In the olden days most cities in the Philippines looked like that even Manila. If you read accounts of westerners that visited the Philippines in past centuries they mention how the cities are generally similar to those in South America and other Spanish colonies with some slight differences (bahay kubo/bahay bato style; more Asian influence). As for the pen thing and going to a shrine/holy place before or after exams that's largely an Asian thing and students mostly do that to important national/licensure exams. Heard students in Korea and Japan does something similar except its in their temples rather than in churches.

Zamboanga as a whole is not very famous with foreigners so locals aren't really used to seeing foreigners unlike Cebu or other tourist hot spots but hopefully tourism will open up also to other nationalities not just vloggers
