You have told barely any of the story. The major decline began with the introduction of the smoking ban, which although being EU wide, we Brits were the only ones to take it seriously. Nonetheless, we enforced it properly and so, while many smokers quit, others quit the pub.
Supermarkets selling alcohol way cheaper than pubs combined with stagnant wages and a minimum wage below what is actually required for someone to live in the UK have also made people drink in the house.
And I would suggest the move to a coffee culture, maybe as a newish trend or maybe because people are becoming more conscious of their diet, is taking people away from drinking all together.
So pubs closing because people are drinking more wine is pretty much the crappiest journalism I've ever seen.
Let me know next time you want to a story on something British CNBC and I'll write it for you.

High property prices, increase in alcohol taxes, increase of all prices, it's expensive to drink out.
Also add in people perhaps drinking less then previous decades, Also more immigrants from non drinking countries moving in.

      Nothing to do with taxes.
a crate of 18 is taxed the same rate as a pint mate.
a pub can hold 100 litres maybe? a supermarket can hold 1k+ litres...thus, the cost is far less in a supermarket than a pub.

The problem is that pubs just can't compete with the supermarket and off-license prices anymore. It's like £4/5 a pint in many pubs, and you can get 8 cans for that in your local off-licence or supermarket. It's more expensive to drink out now, so many people just choose to get a few cans and stay in.

Twenty five years of drinking in pubs what have I to show for it. Career ruin, financial ruin, anxiety, trouble with the cops, loss of friends and time in my life that I will never get back. The landlord doesn't care about his punters or local community, they care about their till and licence. Six months away from the drink and living a much more fulfilling life.

The most infuriating thing for me about pubs is that the ones that sell food don't sell decent fibrous vegetables. The best I've found is oneills who provide mixed veg with their sausage and mash. I've thought of bringing some in myself into other food pubs but I never had the motivation. Surely I won't get into trouble eating products they don't sell, right?

Where I live, the pub's no longer the centre of village life. Instead it's the local petrol station.
It's open round the clock and has a great café where Kylie and the girls serve up a lovely breakfast bap for just £2.49 with hot drink for just 79p
It's a bap with bacon, sausage, cheese, egg, fried tomato, baked beans, black pudding and lettuce with HP sauce, mustard and ketchup.
She does a lovely veggie version too. Plus you can get fancy types of coffee just like from Café Nero as well as good tea.
That's where I usually meet up with Reg, Gary, Fred, Bob, Cyril, Jimmie and the rest of the gang.
    👁 👁
👄 RIP pubs, long live the local petrol station!
