There’s a few theories. One is that nei and nei first were symbiotic so one can’t survive without the other. Another theory is that the clone lab realizes she’s not human and won’t clone her after the truth has been exposed
@@GTV-Japan I've always liked the 1st theory the most but found the 2nd to hold a lot of water as well. I know fans have been asking that question for years.
@@buckroger6456 yeah I guess there is no real answer and it’s left up to each fan to decide. But in the remake she can come back and fight to the end and be part of the ending!
I purchased a Master System at Target in 1988 and picked up Phantasy Star, Lord of The Sword, Golvelius Valley Doom and Y's Vanished Omens. Phantasy Star was an amazing experience. I could not finish the last dungeon on my own. I had to call the 1-800-USA-SEGA line for help. God I miss those days.
Same here. The way they hid that last door was kinda bullshit frankly, from a gameplay perspective they should have at least dropped a clue about it, then at least the player would know to look for it.
Phantasy Star 4 is my favorite RPG of all time by far. Something about the way the characters were developed and the way the story was delivered made you fall in love. I've always hoped they would do a movie or a show based on Alys and Chaz's adventures. What a great anime that would be!
Phantasy Star needs to make a comeback. It is an underrated RPG franchise and if anything, a prequel to the original series. I had 1,2 and 3 for the Genesis and the PS Collection (GBA) and played 4 on an emulator.
But the PS Vita isn’t sold outside Japan anymore right? If that’s the case, no chance. I wish there was something even a modern reset. Make it anything and just call it Phantasy Star.
When you talk about how Sega "removed" the ability to save anywhere in PSII, you totally forget to mention that there's a well known "secret" item (how to get it was explicitly laid out in the awesome & necessary IMO included 110pg hintbook) that adds this feature back, the Visiphone. IMO that thing is damn near a necessity to complete the back 2/3rds of the game.
I LOVE this series (the original tetralogy, that is - and PS Gaiden, i'm not an MMORPG person, i play games to avoid people). I was sick and tired of medieval fantasy rpgs back in '04 when i first discovered PSIV and played it, and then fell in love with the series. I went back and played through I, II and III. Sadly i never finished I because of BAYA MALAY, but i still loved it. I wish i could play the fan translated PSI and PSII remakes, tho. My ps2 broke down and my laptop for some reason can't handle ps2 emulation even though it emulates psp near-flawlessly. Go figure. Great video!
This is a great retrospective! I really just loved Phantasy Star IV though I've played the other games in the main series to differing amounts. Phantasy Star IV is one of those games I'd love to experience again for the first time.
I bought a Sega Saturn back in the day just for phantasy star 5 and it never came out. I still hope some day they make a good turn based phantasy star 5.
Phantasy Star II is my favorite game of all time - ok... Lots of nostalgia here. But for a game in 1988/9, the story with Rolf being orphaned in a spaceship crash (quite tragic, if you ask), one of the main characters meetig her doom in mid game and the shocking ending was pretty ahead of its time. Plus, there was lots of unique characters to choose to form your party, great gameplay and an impressive last boss, with the solar system in her womb. 0_0
Strange as it may seem, I ended up growig bored with PS 2's soundtrack. PS 3, however... The title theme is my 2d favorite video game music of all time. The overworld map sounds incredible as well. Overall, PS3 has the best soundrack in my ear's opinion.
This is so well done, thank you so much for doing this! My father introduced me to Phantasy Star as his favorite game ever was the first one. It's truly been one of the few positive bonding points we have had --I always appreciate being reminded of this series.
I’m glad you liked it! I had the idea planned for a while. But I’m surprised no one else did it so I’m glad it’s all there for everyone. I grew up with all 4 games and I hope my kids will be able to play them with me someday. A lot of people have left comments about their dad, uncle or brother so I’m happy you can relive some of that now. Cheers!
Great video. PS II was my first turn based RPG. Sega also had one of my favorites "Sword of Vermillion". Both games came with the guides and I remember wondering why RPGs cost more money at the time. Thank you for explaining it was due to the extra memory in the cart.
I discovered this video only today, and I just wanted to say thank you for having worked so hard on making it. I've been a fan of the franchise since the Genesis days, and I hope one day we'll truly see that Phantasy Star V come true.
It's crazy that Phantasy Star 3 and 4 happen at the exact same time, but due to the generational gap Dark Falz of PS3 fell AFTER all the Dark Falz of PS4 as well as the Profound Darkness.
@@GTV-Japan no that would be perfect sense, maybe the Layans rioted a couple of months or years after the departure because polítical or social diferences and that took to almost the destruction of the station by the war and the ensuing battle with Darkfalz, the destruction of all the stations could had taked a very long period until the last two remaining ships were attacked, and thats why Rhys onwards didn't know about the true nature of their world. Is stated that Orakio is the ancestor of Rhys but is not stated the time span between them, so 1000 years isn't that extrange to think.
I feel you. Honestly I would love an anime about the classic ones. Unfortunately they only invest on the Online 2, which is very bland and boring to me. Imagine if a cel shading anime adaptation existed. A man can dream...
@@wyatt8740 This. I guess that Jojo was one of the last adaptations that kept loyal to it's style, if not the last. Highly doubt SEGA would give it so much love and attention.
Excellent video, my friend! Thanks for tagging me so I wouldn’t miss it. ;) As a kid, I missed out on most of the Phantasy Star titles. I only rented the second game a handful of times and didn’t get far. It wasn’t until more recently that I played them on the Sonic Genesis collection on PS3. Now Phantasy Star 4 is one of my favorite games for the system. :) Well done with the video! Very informative. And I enjoyed the commercial breaks. ;)
That would be lovely but can't. The profound darkness was defeated and Dark Falz with it. Dark Falz was merely a puppet or a shared being but was still a part of the greater whole.
It's rare when you complete a game you haven't touched since childhood, only to find it's just as good as you remember. That's Phantasy Star IV for me. What I would give for another old school Phantasy Star game...
Discovered this, what a great trip down memory lane and I learned a few things! I played all the 4 games in the US and loved them (PS3 was weird but I still powered through and enjoyed it). I was kind of 'out' when it went to PS:Online. Thanks for doing this!
I was so psyched when I heard about phantasy star generation, and completely crushed when I found out it would only be in japan. this is my favorite rpg series. I remember as a child watching my father play the first game all the time. I still have them, and I still play them. =)
I think rpgs are a great way for parents and kids to play together. My kids will someday learn to read from rpgs for sure. Ps generation 1 and 2 are in English made by fans but that cancellation of ps4 was such a gut punch I’m still not over it
Phantasy Star IV was a very special game for me and is one of my favorite of all time. Thank you for making such an informative and detailed video paying tribute to the series. I am quite impressed and love seeing content like this. I really hope your channel does well.
Thanks Jasmo! I love IV it was great. It was the finale and it was in many ways the genesis/Mega Drive finale. I do fully intend to do separate videos for 2 3 and 4 in the future and 2 is coming in a few weeks
@@GTV-Japan When?! That was about a month ago.. I am looking forward to the next video .. Bwahaha I'm kidding.. Take all the time you need .. Your videos will be divine based off what I have seen.....
Thank you!! The last commenter said he hated it! But can you believe ps1 actually half way had a commercial??! I swear I remember another that was for Sega “game of the month” but can’t find a copy of it. So maybe I’m just imagining things. Thanks for watching! :)
What’s super cool was that Phantasy Star was released on the Nintendo Switch earlier this year, I had so much fun replaying that game 30 year after I played it for the first time on the Master System
The thing I love most in this series is the difference of the futuristic aspect in each game (speaking of 1,2 and 4) While in part 1 you have this clean utopian science fiction look with greek antique influence, in 2 its somehow darker and more "dirty mechanical"...almost metropolis like (judging from the artworks). And in 4 its a radical change to an almost dystopian Mad Max world. Another great thing is the character setup in each game. While i like the guys from 2 most, I always found it epic how in 4 each chara has this special background - Numan, Mage, Cyborg, Motavian, Dezolian, Esper...as if everything important in Algo finally works together to destroy evil. I really really hope they NEVER do a PS5. The ending part of this saga was just perfect.
Thanks for a great comment! I do want a 5 just so I can play it but 4 wrapped up everything nicely so at least it was a great way to say goodbye. You can tell that team LOVED their creation. There are some untranslated books still out there too that fill the story even more especially the space between part 1 and 2 with even more detail. Thanks for watching !!
I love this series...the lore and universe of Phantasy Star just keeps intriguing me when i read over it...and even though it's said the Online Series isn't connected to the originals, i still think they are for the same reason PS3 is connected...but as a certain popular youtuber would say: "That's just a theory..." Such a shame that it seems like Sega of Japan just has no love for fans of the series outside japan...and if they do, they sure don't show it very clearly. :(
MatPat, aka "Game Theory"... it's his video end phrase. O.o that's, kind of impressive if you didn't know about him. But, yeah...i'd love to see a return to the original series and Algo...but it's pretty clear Sega/Sonic Team/PS Team(???) will stay only to the Online series...and that in itself is a gut punch because PSO2 is a damn fine game. *sigh*
As a PSO player, I firmly believe they ARE connected in more than the name. It definitively is the same universe, but they also connect in lore. The story of PSO is about a very technologically advanced civilization that went into space exploration in search for an habitable planet after their home worlds (let me make an emphasis on that s) approached their destruction. They finally found a seemingly beautiful planet that they named Ragol. They never mention what are these home worlds they come from, but I believe they were the Algol system, considering the very similar way they named the newfound world. In a way, the PSO is the sequel of the original PS games, at least in lore. Dark Falz is also the final boss of Phantasy Star Online Episode I. Spoilers, yeah, but they discover that Ragol hid a terrible secret. Deep beneath its surface, there was this gigantic spaceship were an unknown ancient civilization sealed away a cosmic terror, destroyer of worlds, known as Dark Falz (interesting how the mistranslated name stuck up as a cool fantasy-like name). It's also discovered that Dark Falz is a bodyless conscience and it seeks to posses the best possible creature to take a temporary physical form. It indeed took over the body of a hero which transformed into an abomination, which you have to fight against. There are more references there. There are also numans/newmans with the pointy ears and everything.
I remember getting a Genesis for christmas the year it came out and picking a game out of the JC Penny catalog. Just from tiny pictures on the page I instantly picked this game... Then was promptly told to pick something else because PSII was $90. I still have physical copies of III and IV at least.
We've actually covered several Phantasy Star pieces on guitar. Such a great series with great music! My personal favorite list (colored with nostalgia) is PS1, PS4, PS2, and PS3. Love it!!
@@GTV-Japan Here is the latest one we worked on - it's the music from the towers in the game. One of my all time PS favorite tunes!! th-cam.com/video/24liR1uy-k0/w-d-xo.html oh and here's some classic PSII music: th-cam.com/video/my7WTuhIEE0/w-d-xo.html
Do you think that they managed to do what they needed to do? (i don't want to give spoilers for other people that may have not played or ended the game, but you understand me.)
Gaijillionaire I’d love to see the sale of IP’s... I mean, If a software company doesn’t have plans of continuing the production of a game... why not sell it to someone who will, or at least license it.
This video was absolutely PHANTASTIC. At the time I played it, Phantasy Star 4 was easily the best JRPG I had ever played. I was late to the game, having gotten it in 1996. Not long after, I based my decision to buy a playstation just on its library of JRPGs. I needed more. I soon went on to Wild Arms, Suikoden, and not long after Final Fantasy 7 was released. To me, Phantasy Star 4 was my "real" introduction to JRPGs. I had played a few other old ones, but those were not as captivating to me, and I honestly didn't know how to find any good ones.
Well I think some would argued there weren’t many good ones before ps4!! But I get what your saying. Everyone has to find their own groove. Thanks for watching 💫
Great video! I still regularly listen to the Phantasy Star Online soundtrack... Lots of good memories. I really need to go back and give the older games a playthrough.
I swear Rulakir in PS3 reminded me of Vanilla Ice back when I originally played it. I would love to see Phantasy Star 5: The Reformation where Palma after a millennia starts coming back together by some mysterious force. And maybe a forgotten evil seed was left buried in a fragment of planet. Now awakened it tries to contaminate the planet before the rebirth is complete.
Loved this. 1 and 4 are my games ever. Play them at least once a year. Still hold up. Wish the english remakes would get released in na. Then remake 4th. A 5th would be sweet to
Me too! I play 4 more than 1 though as the pace is faster and its easier to get back into if I get too busy to play and forget where I was. I play them now in the PlayStation 2 collection, they have “easy” setting so you can level up fast and not have to grind, just play. Thanks for watching!
God, I love this series; I played the original four games so much, I memorized most of them, and I can still recall a lot of what I learned back then! And yes, I want Phantasy Star 5, as well!
@@roseforyoubabe well you are entitled to your opinion, i did very much enjoy the first dragon quest on the nes, but i couldnt get into final fantasy. All the way around phantasy star is an awesome game, and i liked it much better than final fantasy.
My personal favorite bit of trivia in this video was learning that the silly cake-fetching quest from PSO is a reference to Phantasy Star 1. Always found it so odd how you had to run through a long cave dungeon to pick up a cake. It's a fun quest, but didn't really have any significant lore implications, just a fun quest. NOW however, I understand the reference!
I gotta play part 3 now, i never knew the music changed depending on how many are in your party. The music is really cool when you have 5 members. This was a great video, very well edited.
Great info you gave here. Some of it was new to me. I love Phantasy Star and to me it beats out any RPG hands down, especially PSIV. PSIII...yeah that was the low point I agree but I still enjoy it, just wish they would have included battle animations. Spells were almost useless as well. PSII...one of the few games to ever make me cry with the ending. PSIV did the same thing to me when Alys died. Great games. Thanks for doing this video. One more thing, for the original Phantasy Star...don't know. I can never get used to the FM sound. Good, but I do prefer the non FM music.
I’m glad you liked it! I think we agree on every point you said here. Alys dying was like ohh noooooooo! It can’t be! By the time I played FFVII aeris death didn’t even phase me! I like the us music better too. Probably because I heard it all my life, even though the FM sound was top quality. It’s funny because I starting doing videos of this type to release on the 30th anniversary and I thought at least one big channel would too but they just know about it or care to make it I guess!
coming here from phantasy star online 2 as my fist ps game, and im really amazed at this, the characters, the lore, the names, now i know why Alis in episode 5 looks so retro, this is mind blowing.
Gajillionaire I'm actually about in the middle of playing through Phantasy Star II for the first time ever lol. But I've already had most of it spoiled by reading random things about it through the years. But it's such a good game that even spoilers don't spoil it. 😊 Great video to close out the year man. Cheers!
The only way will get a Phantasy Star 5 is to petition Sega. Great video. My best memories with a game are with Phantasy Star 1-4. Its always about the time and the place. PS3 is underrated.
I don’t know what ps5 would be like but I think by this point the original staff is long gone and who knows what it would be. But yeah what will motivate them????
@@GTV-Japan $! If we can get popularity for a remake of part 1 ut could happen. Kickstarter? If I ever hit it big I guarantee you a ton of my money is going to go towards a remake petition.
Incredible video! Thank you so much!! Phantasy star is by far my favorite SciFi story ever. Better than star Trek, star wars or any other fictions out there!!
Philippe oh that’s fine. Being undiscovered is part of being new on TH-cam. I don’t know if anyone has ever seen all 50 videos but go for it!!! I try to do 90/10 games/ others stuff and then mix between japan and USA so there’s a lot of variety. If you can share with anybody who’d like it that’d be cool and that’s how I’ll be able to reach more on TH-cam and put more videos out overtime. Comment on anything you like. I always read everything!! Cheers 🍻
Is at the same level of Mass effect and Dune to me. Just make some chronology arrangements wich connect the older games with the modern ones and thats it.
Amazing video! Truth be told, I never played the original Phantasy Star games. Phantasy Star Online was my first experience with the franchise (which I still play up to this day, the GameCube version), but it's good to know about the story and origin of the franchise. Right of the bat I noticed that PSO Episode II uses a remixed/modernized version of the 3D dungeons music in it's first dungeon. Oh, and there is also a very silly and kind of tedious mission at Episode I that makes you go very deep into a cave to get a darn cake LOL! Now I get it, it's a throwback reference.
I know what you mean. I have a soft spot for 3. First there weren’t many RPGs anyway then so we played it! If it had any other title I don’t think it’d get much criticism. Best I can say is that the center of Phantasy Star has always been about the Palmanian people so when the ships evacuated which was the end of 2, it would make sense to see what became of their race.
@@GTV-Japan If that game would be a reboot of PSO episode 1&2 (4 would be a nice addition), I would pick it up in a heart beat, even though I would never get to use my lv 112 ranger from the gamecube version.
This is awesome. The first Phantasy Star was made me fall in love with RPGs, though I was only 9 or 10 at the time playing it, and so needed guidebooks to help me figure out what to do. I wasn't able to play any of the sequels until years later when I finished them on an emulator. It would be amazing if they did remakes of 1, 2 & 4. Can you imagine: Phantasy Star, but looking like FFXVI? But it'll never happen.
Had a Sega in the late 90's but never played the game. That being said, you did a real nice job with the research and putting this together, and the television show-esque feel with the commercials was great.
Very well done! Thank you for all the time and hard work to put this together for us PS fans! I'm hoping and praying for 5 as well! Phantasy Star on the Master System was my childhood. Still to this day, the best game I've ever played. Turned me on to RPGs. I enjoyed 2, 3 and 4, but the original is where it's at. Thank you again!
Just stumbled upon this retrospective, really well done! I love the original 4 games, 4 being my favorite. Even back they were a breath of fresh air in contrast to all the fantasy stuff, with their incorporation of the sci-fi elements. Such a great series of games, that just disappeared. Still maintain hope to this day that they bring back the OG style/series in some form. I feel similar about Breath of Fire as far as getting a new release one day. Cheers!
Thanks for finding it. I just did one in ps3 this year if you have time to see it. I wish the series would come back too but I’m not holding my breath 💫
Great! I’m happy. And I LOVE phantasy star so it was a joy to make. I also did a video on ps2 and 3 so go see that when you have time. Thanks for watching 💫
@@GTV-Japan I will!!! How many hours I spent playing ps2! What a game! Ps4 is amazing. How it closes the franchise. I wish they would make a ps5, but who knows... Every year I play one of the ps games and I stop in front of the last dungeon, without ending the game. I just don't want the magic to end.
Great! Ive seen patches like that which is how the game should be anyway! I like the FM sound, but grown guys up without it, sounds strange now, but it is really really good! Thanks for watching
@@GTV-Japan The percussion sounds a little flat, the "snare" feels a little grating after awhile. Fortunately on a modern system you can EQ it to be a little quieter and … that makes all the difference actually.
Yup. I want, hope and wish for a Phantasy Star V. I would love it to happen. I'm still playing all four on my Xbox 360 the Sega Classics collection. Still great. Here's to hoping and wishing.
Wonderful video, came across this by accident while looking at stuff about the Saturn, really glad I found this. Great in depth, well researched and interesting video! Subbed :)
I’m glad you found it! I did a few 30th anniversaries for games over the last 2 years so check them out! In the future I’ll be covering more Sega stuff as the Genesis turns 30
Will do man :) Watching this videos really makes me wanna save up for a phantasy star game, which one is best do you think? :) I'm currently waiting for a repro copy of magic knight rayearth and Albert odyssey as I live in the U.K :)
I recommend 4 but if you get any of the existing collections it should have all 4 or at least the 3 16 bit ones. The first one is really hard because the dungeons are so confusing
Okey doke, cheers! I'll be sure to look out for them :) and thanks again! Your videos are really cool, really glad I've found your channel you deserve way more views mate :) Good luck for the future from the U.K!
This game got me into RPGs back in the late 80s. Going from this to the NES, even classic games like Final Fantasy seemed far less refined. Phantasy Star was to NES RPGS what the SNES was to Genesis RPGs a few years later.
Nah, there are some really good rpgs on the Génesis starting with PS2, 3 and 4, Shining series, Soleil, Story of Thor/Beyond Oasis, Landstalker, Rent a hero (this one is amazing), Der Langrisser, Star Cruiser (to me the grampa of Mass effect haha!), Light crusader, Sword of Vermilion and lately Piersolar. Nah, Génesis has nothing to envy to the Snes in RPG material.
Thanks for your comment!! I wish for 5 too but I wouldn’t mind a continuation of 3 if it’s all we could get. Why not check out my Phantasy Star 2 video when you have time 💫
I had watched a few of your videos in the past and am subscribed. Today I am trying to catch some I missed. You have a great channel with very good content.
Gaijillionaire I would gladly pay for that I hope so! Im a 15 year old boy but this game means a lot to me! Im just 7 years old since I played this game. And yep on the start I dont know what to do later on im now liking the story and it touches My heart until now I really wish they do That i Will cry because of these memories of the past.
ItsNeekoKDM well I can tell you I was excited for the generations games back then. Hurt they never came out in English and crushed when 4 was cancelled. Generation 1 was the first game I bought in japan. First I finished in Japanese. It was greattttttttt
@@GTV-Japan Nothing is getting old... Well, maybe aside from the food reviews, ha-ha, but it's only MY opinion, and otherwise your channel is amazing!))
I only recently started playing Phantasy Star 2 on the PS4 Genesis collection. I was enjoying it from the get go but the scene when you reunite father and daughter on the Northern bridge is what made me say "I'm going to see this series to the end." 😂
The closest to Phantasy Star V I've played is Skies of Arcadia (which is my favorite RPG of all time, BTW) Sega should have done PS V (& for that matter, Skies II) but from what I've heard they still have major issues with their business leadership
Phantasy Star 2 is an incredibly important to me. It was my first real role playing have. I learned as a kid to make maps, read and understand economics and currency. I am replying the game now in 2018 on my Genesis and the game is giving me huge feels. I love this game!
phantasy star died at the fourth game and its reanimated husk is still being pimped out by sega to this day. a moment of silence for an once great franchise.
Phantasy Star IV still the best game I ever played. Best characters, best lore and references to previous games. And the music... omg the music... so good I still replay it now and then, its the best.
While the Phantasy Star games were awesome back in the day, I feel that they haven't aged too well. I've played the first three, but not the fourth, which I have heard is excellent. Thankfully, I do have the Genesis collection on PS3. Great video, man! I learned a lot!
I agree. 1 is really hard with tough leveling up and slow movement. The dungeons look cool but are sooooo confusing. 2 is fine but the movement and battles are so slow! 3 if it was a separate game would be good. You must play! Graphics and music are the best! The movement on screen is fast and the level grinding is fun as far as level grinding goes. Get on it! I’m playing 4 all over again myself this weekend
Phantasy Star 4 hasn't aged well?! Well, it aged better then most other rpg from the time, i'll tell you that. PS4 is a well made game that pretty acessible.
Which game are you playing? Sure, some characters share the same techniques, but a far as I know, most of the characters have their own unique weapons and specific abilities. Chaz can unitize sword techniques unique to him. Rika utilizes claws and have agility based abilities unique to her. Allis uses boomerang slashers that can attack all the enemies at once. And the cyborg characters can only utilize unique techniques based on the parts the party finds. I'm not going to say all the characters are perfectly unique. After all, Chaz, Hahn and Seth can all use knives, and two characters utilize slashers (despite the fact that one gets killed off before the second one joins), but saying they don't have any unique kits make me question what you are referring to. Also, If you don't want to keep spamming attacks, there is a option to combine techniques provided if you know the right combinations. And Story wise, they are all their own unique characters.
The Phantasy Star series was the most emotional series for me. First time I ever cried over a character in a game was in PSII and again in PSIV. I didn't get the chance to play PSI until emulation. I really hated that PSIII was considered part of the series. It was a very intelligent game but would have been so much better as a stand alone with no PS connection to the story. As for the Online and Universe games. I never cared to play those. I was too emotionally attached to the original experience. Much like how I am to the Ultima games I played as a kid back in the early 80's. Anyways, great video. Thanks for posting this.
My first ever jrpg was 4, and it will forever be my favourite game ever. I take really long breaks and play it through all over again. and i still feel the way i felt the first time i played it when i was an 8 year old.
I really enjoyed the video. I have a question on the first Phantasy Star game. I wonder why Sega removed the FM sound music for the international release? It would have been a really good selling point for the game could be it was too expensive for game cartridge development at the time?
Good question. Simply the FM sound card was developed after the SMS came out in US/EU. So it’s impossible. I have seen videos where someone hacks a US master system adds the sound card and it works though
Updated 3/23. The response has been crazy to this video! I LOVE seeing PS fans of all types coming out and sharing memories! So keep it coming. Comment and share this video!

It's a really close tie between 2 and 3 for me, but Phantasy Star 2 just because of Nei. Nei is my favorite character.
I always found reviving the dead via cloning in Phantasy Star II to be unbelievably creepy and memorable.
.... it is weird
That always bugged me since Nei died, why couldn't we just recline her again like we always done when she died.

Awesome! I used to call them too and they had one guy who know PS1 inside out and if he was busy Sega actually called you back!
All dope games…. 👌🏿
Same here. The way they hid that last door was kinda bullshit frankly, from a gameplay perspective they should have at least dropped a clue about it, then at least the player would know to look for it.
The last door was murder
$70 bucks for Phantasy Star at Toys R US
Phantasy Star 4 is my favorite RPG of all time by far. Something about the way the characters were developed and the way the story was delivered made you fall in love. I've always hoped they would do a movie or a show based on Alys and Chaz's adventures. What a great anime that would be!
Me too the plan was to have cutscenes on Sega CD. Would have been an awesome movie
Phantasy Star needs to make a comeback. It is an underrated RPG franchise and if anything, a prequel to the original series. I had 1,2 and 3 for the Genesis and the PS Collection (GBA) and played 4 on an emulator.
With all the steam Final Fantasy versions you’d think we’d get at least an updated phantasy star at some point
Thanks! PS would give FF a run for it's money if done right for today's consoles! Sega I feel did do that back then with this....
Even if they weren’t great remakes it would keep the series relevant and running.
But the PS Vita isn’t sold outside Japan anymore right? If that’s the case, no chance. I wish there was something even a modern reset. Make it anything and just call it Phantasy Star.
Is there any prequel for Phantasy Star ? Any form will be great.
Comic or fan made novel or look alike :D
When you talk about how Sega "removed" the ability to save anywhere in PSII, you totally forget to mention that there's a well known "secret" item (how to get it was explicitly laid out in the awesome & necessary IMO included 110pg hintbook) that adds this feature back, the Visiphone. IMO that thing is damn near a necessity to complete the back 2/3rds of the game.
That is true!
shir had to steal it from...someplace in paseo town...how do i even remember this 30 years later
It’s the central tower in the capital. It’s a random chance but it normally takes place within 20 attempts.
Thanks. I hope you finish someday
This is a great retrospective! I really just loved Phantasy Star IV though I've played the other games in the main series to differing amounts. Phantasy Star IV is one of those games I'd love to experience again for the first time.
Thanks for watching! I feel the same PS4 was just that great !
I bought a Sega Saturn back in the day just for phantasy star 5 and it never came out. I still hope some day they make a good turn based phantasy star 5.
If they can do Shenmue 1-2 anything is possible!!
Sega’s failure to make use of so many of their established IPs is definitely one of the biggest ‘WTF?’s hanging over the Saturn’s failure.
Lots of people have said they love 2 the most! It was really good. The music was my fav part of the game
MadFugu Pretty bad ass, huh?
Strange as it may seem, I ended up growig bored with PS 2's soundtrack. PS 3, however... The title theme is my 2d favorite video game music of all time. The overworld map sounds incredible as well. Overall, PS3 has the best soundrack in my ear's opinion.
MadFugu oh yea. I love that opening too
3 was my favorite. Then 1 followed by 2 then 4
This is so well done, thank you so much for doing this!
Cheers!
For me the greatest game ever, and a pillar of my childhood.
Great video!
Thanks for watching! I feel the same as you
Gaijillionaire do you know any way of getting ps1 or 4 on iPhone?
PS4 is coming soon to Sega Forever!
My favourite series! Wish they would have made more games that take place between PS1 and PS2. Great video!
Thanks I’m glad you liked it
Adding a note/instrument to the increase in party members in PS-3 was simple but super creative.
Yea and I still get comments from people who just learned that
Great video. PS II was my first turn based RPG. Sega also had one of my favorites "Sword of Vermillion". Both games came with the guides and I remember wondering why RPGs cost more money at the time. Thank you for explaining it was due to the extra memory in the cart.
I loved Sword of Vermillion too! Thanks for watching
Was a huge fan on Sword of Vermilion, beating it a number of times. Wish they would revive both series.
I discovered this video only today, and I just wanted to say thank you for having worked so hard on making it. I've been a fan of the franchise since the Genesis days, and I hope one day we'll truly see that Phantasy Star V come true.
Hey great thanks! I loooove the original PS series. I made a video on ps2 and 3 so go check it when you have time. Thanks for watching 💫
I still get japanese emails because I've signed up for a PSO 2 account.
That's 2 hours of deciphering a japanese Captcha I'll never get back...
I respect that! Those things are hard
And now you don't need to do those! PSO2 global is lit
How’s business after Chuck?
It's crazy that Phantasy Star 3 and 4 happen at the exact same time, but due to the generational gap Dark Falz of PS3 fell AFTER all the Dark Falz of PS4 as well as the Profound Darkness.
There was an error in the translation ;) in the original in Japanese, PS3 happens 1000 years after PS2
Yea. Which makes no sense because somehow the oral Ian war happened just after take off if that’s true. Which it aint
The original PS was the first JRPG I ever played and will always have happy place in my soul
Thanks for sharing your memories 💫
I love the way this is edited, with video game advertisements and all. Man i love your videos
Thanks for watching! 💫
2 is my favorite. I hate how Sega will never make another SP Phantasy Star.
I’m finding many people love 2 the most! Yea I’m very sad ps5 will never be
I feel you. Honestly I would love an anime about the classic ones. Unfortunately they only invest on the Online 2, which is very bland and boring to me. Imagine if a cel shading anime adaptation existed. A man can dream...
Saddest part for me is that if it was made, I'm sure it would be "modernized" to the point of being unrecognizable.
That’s very possible
@@wyatt8740 This. I guess that Jojo was one of the last adaptations that kept loyal to it's style, if not the last. Highly doubt SEGA would give it so much love and attention.
great video, i love how you manage to talk about the games and avoid to spoiled so many things
Thanks! No need to spoil things because I know not everyone has played these.
And I enjoyed the commercial breaks. ;)
Glad you liked it and I know of no bigger RPG fan than you!
Start a go fund me for Phantasy Star 5.
Once I get the English version of Cosmic Fantasy 3 out, sure!!
Please for both
Phantasy Star 5...I'd go nuts lol
Yes!!!!! If only
That would be lovely but can't.
I know. It’s so sad there will never be another one.but good point that 4 still holds up!! 💫
Discovered this, what a great trip down memory lane and I learned a few things! I played all the 4 games in the US and loved them (PS3 was weird but I still powered through and enjoyed it). I was kind of 'out' when it went to PS:Online. Thanks for doing this!
No problem! More ps on the way too 💫
I was so psyched when I heard about phantasy star generation, and completely crushed when I found out it would only be in japan. this is my favorite rpg series.
I’m still writing it but it will be ready by or before March 21!
Nice video, well done!
I liked the adverts inbetween, they gave the video a unique nostalgic feeling.
I loved it and to borrow a line from Depeche Mode, they got the balance right
The thing I love most in this series is the difference of the futuristic aspect in each game (speaking of 1,2 and 4) While in part 1 you have this clean utopian science fiction look with greek antique influence, in 2 its somehow darker and more "dirty mechanical"...almost metropolis like (judging from the artworks).
I love this series...the lore and universe of Phantasy Star just keeps intriguing me when i read over it...and even though it's said the Online Series isn't connected to the originals, i still think they are for the same reason PS3 is connected...but as a certain popular youtuber would say: "That's just a theory..."
Such a shame that it seems like Sega of Japan just has no love for fans of the series outside japan...and if they do, they sure don't show it very clearly. :(
Thanks! I wish they were connected more than just in name. I wish they’d just do PS 5! Who says just a theory? I’m not familiar with that phrase
*sigh*
Oh sorry. Never heard of it! Actually I don’t interact with many other channels. But I’ve opened up more recently
Yea I think it’s a shame we won’t see Algol again and soon enough the staff that made 1-4 will be retired and gone too
As a PSO player, I firmly believe they ARE connected in more than the name.
Great story!! Don’t let go of your copies of ya can
So informative and nostalgic. Loved the Japanese TV sponsor message
Thanks glad you enjoyed it! Almost everyone who comment here said the same thing. I guess PS2 > FF1!
And I got 51 other videos so check out some and comment on the ones you like
We've actually covered several Phantasy Star pieces on guitar. Such a great series with great music! My personal favorite list (colored with nostalgia) is PS1, PS4, PS2, and PS3. Love it!!
Awesome send a link I want to hear it
@@GTV-Japan Here is the latest one we worked on - it's the music from the towers in the game. One of my all time PS favorite tunes!! th-cam.com/video/24liR1uy-k0/w-d-xo.html oh and here's some classic PSII music: th-cam.com/video/my7WTuhIEE0/w-d-xo.html
To me part 2 is the best RPG game of all time! Just the ending was so shocking that still stuck clearly in my mind after about 3 decades!
Do you think that they managed to do what they needed to do? (i don't want to give spoilers for other people that may have not played or ended the game, but you understand me.)
My first RPG! I had wanted to play D&D while I was a kid and finally got my chance to get my game on!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing
Awesome retrospective about an amazing game series. Thanks for making this!
I’d Kickstarter the crap out of a Sega Genesis release of Phantasy Star 5 or a PC and translated release of the 2D makeovers of the original 4.
I wonder how far you could go legally with the game and make it Phantasy Star without Sega shutting it down
Gaijillionaire I’d love to see the sale of IP’s... I mean, If a software company doesn’t have plans of continuing the production of a game... why not sell it to someone who will, or at least license it.
@@PabstOban they kinda did that with Streets of rage 4
Great video ps2 the music still haunts me.
Great video! I still regularly listen to the Phantasy Star Online soundtrack... Lots of good memories. I really need to go back and give the older games a playthrough.
Give 3 a chance, its not toooooo bad!
Now that would be cool!!
That would be good.
Great video! I grew up with PS2, 3, and 4 on the Genesis. Just hearing the music brings back some great memories!
Thanks! I love all the music but especially PS4 and made sure my fav tracks went in
I absolutely loved the classic phantasy star series I hope they remaster phantasy star 1 2 and 4 retelling the amazing story
Yeah. My daily prayer! Thanks for watching 💫
Great Retrospecitve! Thank you for all those childhood memories you've woken up for me.
You’re very welcome
I’m glad you liked this video. Lots of other people are saying the same thing.
I would love a turn based phantasy star 5. I have been waiting so many years.
the best rpg series ever! i love all the phantasy stars from SMS to the Dreamcast. honestly got a lttle teary-eyed with this video
Yea me too, and I made it! Thanks for watching all the way to the end!
um no final fantasy and dragon quest are light years a series better then phantasy star
Great! It is silly though ahah thanks for watching
The first phantasy star is my second favorite game behind FF4.. Very underrated franchise…💯
Yeah. Very underrated!
I gotta play part 3 now, i never knew the music changed depending on how many are in your party. The music is really cool when you have 5 members. This was a great video, very well edited.
Thanks. It is a bit old now but I followed up with a video on PS3 so go take a look if you have time. Thanks for watching!
It’s funny because I starting doing videos of this type to release on the 30th anniversary and I thought at least one big channel would too but they just know about it or care to make it I guess!
coming here from phantasy star online 2 as my fist ps game, and im really amazed at this, the characters, the lore, the names, now i know why Alis in episode 5 looks so retro, this is mind blowing.
ohh yeah, I'll make sure to mention that someday
Great, in depth video man!
Thanks! Hope I didn't spoil anything if you didn't finish them all yet
Gajillionaire I'm actually about in the middle of playing through Phantasy Star II for the first time ever lol. But I've already had most of it spoiled by reading random things about it through the years. But it's such a good game that even spoilers don't spoil it. 😊
Great video to close out the year man. Cheers!
yea thats what I thought, but still I don't like spoiling for others. I hope you get thru it soon and onto 3 and 4
your channel is a masterpiece man. the commercials are a very nice touch :)
Thanks for the support!!💫
Not gonna lie , i legit cried when ( Phantasy Star IV spoiler possibility ) ____ died back then.
It’s ok. I did too. We all did. And shed a tear at the fact that the series was over too
😭 I'm not crying, you're crying.
It’s just rain ☔️
The only way will get a Phantasy Star 5 is to petition Sega.
Great video. My best memories with a game are with Phantasy Star 1-4. Its always about the time and the place. PS3 is underrated.
I don’t know what ps5 would be like but I think by this point the original staff is long gone and who knows what it would be. But yeah what will motivate them????
@@GTV-Japan $! If we can get popularity for a remake of part 1 ut could happen. Kickstarter? If I ever hit it big I guarantee you a ton of my money is going to go towards a remake petition.

Gaijillionaire oh I'm gonna take a look at ALL of your videos! Glad I just discovered you! (Shame that I didn't sooner...)
Hey that’s ok! I liked online too. I want to make a video on it someday but the modern incarnation I have no experience with. Thanks for watching 💫
@@GTV-Japan No prob, it was my pleasure! Just subscribed. Oh boy and I would love to see a video about PSO, one of my favorite games ever.
I loved Phantasy Star III personally, but the story being so far from Algol did kind of make it feel like a gaiden. Still, the it was great.
I've never played them. Now i need to get the collection. Great video!
Keith Thomas get complete collection for ps2/ps3. There’s language music and difficulty options the others won’t have. Plus hidden games too
SEGA should make a NEW Phantasy Star for the Nintendo Switch

Jeff Thurman pso2 has a story but everyone says it’s crap. Asked my weeb cousin about the anime he said don’t watch it it sucks
@@uhhh_adam I can confirm, even for one who stopped watching cartoon well before middle school, the pso2 story is terrible.
Fuck that console with horrible controller.
One can only dream 💫
Man I loved this game kept me up nights and home weekends lol .

Had a Sega in the late 90's but never played the game. That being said, you did a real nice job with the research and putting this together, and the television show-esque feel with the commercials was great.

Didn’t know that!
Very well done! Thank you for all the time and hard work to put this together for us PS fans! I'm hoping and praying for 5 as well! Phantasy Star on the Master System was my childhood. Cheers!

It's still going strong? Not too sure of that myself ...
Now you are!
Thanks! I hope I get more but who knows! Cheers
This was a extremely well done video as an ode to the legendary game. If they ever create a PS5, I hope they continue with themes from 2 and 4.
Thanks for your comment!! I wish for 5 too but I wouldn’t mind a continuation of 3 if it’s all we could get. Why not check out my Phantasy Star 2 video when you have time 💫
The Gamehorder approves this video...
Thank you GameHorder! I appreciate the endorsement!!
I had watched a few of your videos in the past and am subscribed. Today I am trying to catch some I missed. You have a great channel with very good content.
Thanks for that! I reply to every comment so let me know what you think good or bad. Cheers! 💫
@@GTV-Japan So far it's all been good!
Cool. But I also mean games you don’t like not exactly just the video 🍻
ITs so sad That Phantasy star 4 generations has been cancelled. but phantasy star 4 is the best of them all!
It STILL hurts. Maybe on PlayStation 5 someday?
Gaijillionaire I would gladly pay for that I hope so! Im a 15 year old boy but this game means a lot to me! Im just 7 years old since I played this game. And yep on the start I dont know what to do later on im now liking the story and it touches My heart until now I really wish they do That i Will cry because of these memories of the past.
ItsNeekoKDM well I can tell you I was excited for the generations games back then. Hurt they never came out in English and crushed when 4 was cancelled. Generation 1 was the first game I bought in japan. First I finished in Japanese. It was greattttttttt
Watched this video twice already and it's still amazing!!
Thanks for your effort!
Thanks! It’s getting old now so I appreciate the views
@@GTV-Japan Nothing is getting old...
Well, maybe aside from the food reviews, ha-ha, but it's only MY opinion, and otherwise your channel is amazing!))
80 dollars when i was a kid wtf
I only recently started playing Phantasy Star 2 on the PS4 Genesis collection. I was enjoying it from the get go but the scene when you reunite father and daughter on the Northern bridge is what made me say "I'm going to see this series to the end." 😂
Tiem!
I'd love it if Sega made a Phantasy Star V or a single player re-boot. The PS Online series are good, but not he same as the single player games.
Yes this is true! It’s not the same. Just remake all 4 in a prettier ps4 style, it’ll be a good start
The closest to Phantasy Star V I've played is Skies of Arcadia (which is my favorite RPG of all time, BTW)
Sega should have done PS V (& for that matter, Skies II) but from what I've heard they still have major issues with their business leadership
Yeah it’s sad..
@@seanmcgrath3826 That and they're not gonna be foolish enough to drop thier money making machine
Phantasy Star 2 is an incredibly important to me. It was my first real role playing have. I learned as a kid to make maps, read and understand economics and currency. I am replying the game now in 2018 on my Genesis and the game is giving me huge feels. I love this game!
More people are saying they love 2 more than anything else
phantasy star died at the fourth game and its reanimated husk is still being pimped out by sega to this day. a moment of silence for an once great franchise.
I strongly agree. PSO was definitely when Sega started getting greedy.
Phantasy Star IV still the best game I ever played. Best characters, best lore and references to previous games. And the music... omg the music... so good
I still replay it now and then, its the best.
It is the best!
I used to be a big phantasy star fan and I fully agree with you. phantasy star 4 hasn't aged well and its the best game in the entire series.
Phantasy Star 4 hasn't aged well?! Well, it aged better then most other rpg from the time, i'll tell you that. PS4 is a well made game that pretty acessible.
problem with the game is that most of the heroes dont have unique kits.most battles you just spam the same abilities over and over again.
I’m glad you liked it!
Well done sir, well done
Thanks ! Pass it on if you can!
Love this overview. Thanks for the great work!
Thanks! I hope all the way to the end you won’t be disappointed 💫
Phantasy Star was the first series that did SciFi RPG right
Yes!
My first ever jrpg was 4, and it will forever be my favourite game ever. I take really long breaks and play it through all over again. and i still feel the way i felt the first time i played it when i was an 8 year old.
Thanks for the comment! Great to hear. I’ll use it in my phantasy star4 video, even though that’s 5 years from now
I really enjoyed the video.
I love that your video is 30 minutes exactly.
Thanks! I didn’t plan it out but it’s a nice feature. I always try to make the videos end in zero where I can. Thanks for watching 💫
