No one was catching Pond. That was the ex San Remo car with the highest bhp v6 ever developed on the works 6r4s. This bad boy had approx 520bhp! I know because a pal owned it until it was destroyed in a museum fire and I was blessed to be driven on deserted country roads by the owner who was still at that time a paid pro rally driver, though in group A at that time. He had driven works group B too and we were driving the tiny country roads we know because we live here. Amazing experiences - that car literally threw itself forwards and upwards in a leap each time it touches down.. the tyres grab the tarmac and immediately happens again and again jumping at 140mph with the devil / acdc / mechanical magic all happening 6inches behind your head. What A brutal, beautifully efficient machine. My dream toy.
Had a ride along in PDP 694X owned by Steve Dinmes at the NEC as part of a Sporting Bears fundraiser. Told him it was the fulfillment of a childhood dream so we went for a bit more spirited drive than usual. At the time I'd been in top spec Ford Cossies but the Metro was so special
For me, and thousands of others, Group B will always be the pinnacle of rallying. Lightweight cars, lots of power, muscular sounding engines, drivers visible in the cockpits, and sheer speed. There was huge interest around the world, and even my mum could name a few drivers! I’m glad to have experienced the thrill of spectating, and I even had an amazing ride in an RS200, driven by John Taylor. Great years, I was fortunate.
I helped prepare this car at the Austin Rover plant in oxford, fantastic memories of these days testing and preparing for events, went on a recce in France with Pondy and Rob. oh and David Appleby who brought one of the works cars when it shut down. Shane Hone or kiwi is my name.
@@davecommentator It's going to be library music from De Wolf, Parry Music or something similar. You'll probably find it on Sonne Image TH-cam channel.
Hiya, diddlry diddley organ music and some bloke talking instead of engine dounds lol. I'll forgive them for they knew not what they did and could not possibly have forseen the idiocy that was to come and is now coming on so strong grrr. Thank god for these old videos and thanksyou so much for posting it. Fabulous:-)
How Russel Brooks was able to challenge the stage times of the Rs 200s,and 6R4 ,s losing average by 2-4 seconds and even matching them at some stages is beyond me!
Excellent point. Brookes was so understated but so efficient with speed! Also, no mention of John Haughland. All the lead drivers would admit they were relieved when he always turned up in the 100(+)bhp Skoda!
@Mr Ron It was amazing times. The combination of machinery with different cylinders making different sounds. 4,6,8, rotary, turbo, NA 4wd, rwd echoing through the forests was Euphoric!
Literally i was born 1986 so sadly missed the best decade the 1980s , grew up in disappointment 90s Terrorist 00s , recession 2010s and Pandemic 2020s , I wonder what hell awaits us next lol , the people born from 1945 had the best time as they grew up in the 50s 60s 70s and 80s just much better times , I know the tech was rubbish compared to 2023 but people were friendlier , no mass flow of illegal immigrants , everyone knew everyone else , it was a safer UK than now.
I thought this was going to be a commodore 64 game when I watched the first part. I was like eh??!?!? the thumb showed a real 6r4, C64 graphics weren't that good?

So did I. My job was cleaning the toilets they had a dump in
Thanks for the upload. I'd like to give the producer a smack though for allowing that music to run for as long as it did.
Yeah mate, I'll hold him . You hit him. Needs a slap with a tyre iron. Let's hear the engines sing instead. 🤜💥🤛
Based on that marvellous outfit, Tony Pond could not only have selected but probably performed the incidental music!
Anyone know what the music is called?

For any motorsport fans these videos are brilliant and in the main excellent quality, many thanks for uploading.
Amazing to think there were rival companies doing coverage for this!!
chunder27 and now like F1 only WRC can cover it.
@@Marvdogger2 I rarely watch any of that stuff, prefer to watch youtubers, and watched plenty of your compilations chap, more please!
@@chunder27 Same i don't watch their coverage either. I prefer to watch old rally clips. Thanks, i'll get more stuff out their at some point.
Marvdogger2 Dirtfish’s current coverage of rally is pretty amazing though
I love the theme music on this one!
I was at “the yard “ in 1986 giving Rose and others a load

I do wonder what GroupB would look like today. WEC style hybrid powertrain etc etc

Russell's car ADZ 31 was the lightest Manta built.
@@russcattell955i Thats correct. I believe 40kg lighter! Yikes! The 400 was plasticy to begin with!

Chevette rally cars crack me up
None in this video though.
Why? They were good rally cars.
I Presume it was "Rothmans Rally" on Billy Coleman's Metro 6R4 Was the Reason it was not on the Video . Tobacco Adevertising issiues.😢
It's literally at 10:48
Is that Morgan in the merc?
Yep, Russell Morgan - father of 2000s BTCC driver Adam.

The music spoilt this video!!!
Fantastic cars but what awful music
ABBA
1980s synth music lol it is bad
These 80s films with this pathetic fairground music is so annoying!
