  • Hundreds of thousands of people of Lithuanian descent live in Brazil, where they have a Lithuanian district in Sao Paulo, a Lithuanian village and more, some of that operating since before World War 2 when immigration from Lithuania reached its peak.
In this interview, the former leader of Lithuanian-Brazilian community Waldemar Mališkas-Sidaravičius introduces the main Lithuanian heritage sites of Brazil. The interview is illustrated by videos taken by Augustinas Žemaitis and Aistė Žemaitienė during their creative work of the encyclopedia article on the Lithuanian-Brazilian heritage, e.g. Vila Zelina Lithuanian district of Sao Paulo, Lituanika Lithuanian village and more.

The Lithuanian-Brazilians in question are not immigrants, they were born in Brazil. It is mostly their grandparents generation that were immigrants (in the 1920s). As such, they are Brazilian in culture, speak Portuguese natively, etc. (with only a minority speaking Lithuanian language at all but still less fluently than they do speak Portuguese). While remembering the Lithuanian roots and culture, most of them still likely feel more at home in Brazil than Lithuania. Many also have "mixed roots" with at least one grandparent non-Lithuanian.
