    Apple could make an absolute mint if they made it easier for us. I was having second thoughts about getting the controller, instead just playing it on the iPad. Your video has changed my mind. Thanks loads. If there’re any other videos like this you could make, specifically for GB/IPad/Akai combo, please don’t hesitate. This one is priceless.

    Thank you for your video, it's very helpfull, I would like to know if it is possible to assign the knobs of the akai to control the virtual keyboard on garage band, for exemple, assign an akai's knobs to control the "cut off"... etc

    • @DarkRoastRecording

    Great video! Only one question, how can you connect this setup from iPad to a speaker?

    • @DarkRoastRecording
      @DarkRoastRecording  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      you would just connect the ipad headphone jack to an AUX input on a speaker , the size of cable tips may vary. If you are using an ipad without a headphone jack, then you would need to use a USB-c hub that has a headphone jack on it as well as USB to connect everything

    This was really interesting but went a bit whoosh over me. I'm a newbie to making music and the tech really confuses me. I've made a few tracks using GarageBand loops and I'm looking make my own tunes. If I buy the Akai MK 3 or Arturia MK2 can I just plug play and record on GarageBand or do I have to go through this mapping business. I have a Roland E09 interactive arranger but for the life of me haven't been able to connect it to successfully connect it to GarageBand or Bandlab.

    Hello, How are you? Thanks for your videos. I already own a good iRig keyboard for use with GarageBand iOS. Does the Aki keyboard 25 note on board dials allow use when tweaking volumes, panning and other parameters when performing a final mix of projects?

    • @DarkRoastRecording
      @DarkRoastRecording  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      they do provided you have the GarageBand midi mapping for whatever instrument you are trying to use the knobs with. a google search should be able to find that out.

  • @bee305ss
    @bee305ss ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good morning. Do you need a 4 port hub in order for the controller to work properly? I have the camera adapter already. I tried it without downloading the software. Will it work after I download the software or do I need the 4 port hub in order for it to work at all? Thanks in advance for your reply!

    • @DarkRoastRecording
      @DarkRoastRecording  ปีที่แล้ว

      The software is only to edit the midi notes on the keyboard in the programable number slots. The 4 port hub is to ensure the keyboard will be recognized by the ipad in order to use it in the ipad os. Most ipads will give an insufficient power failure error when not using the 4 port hub.

    • @grjjboy
      @grjjboy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not the guy, but garage band has been used by a ton of professional artist worldwide, not just as a rough draft but even as a finished copy. It's also completely free if money is the issue. A more in-depth version of garage band is Logic Pro X if you wanted a more 'professional' program. Logic Pro X does cost ~$200 though. I've personally used a lot of the more mainstream programs (just for fun and they were all free trials), but garageband just looks better imo and it's more intuitive.

    • @DarkRoastRecording
      @DarkRoastRecording  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly that’s a tough question, paid DAWS like ableton or logic are full featured, and support higher end plugins and instruments. I use Studio One Pro 5 for my main DAW. I use garageband for quick ideas to later record fully in studio one. Also, if looping or solo live performances was my thing, I would likely switch to Ableton, but that’s not my bag. Depends on what you are into

  • @mickturner8977
    @mickturner8977 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the great introduction. It helped a lot with regard to the pad assignments, but how can I stop it playing with the keys? I want my keyboard to control a synth, and the pads for a drum app, but I am getting both sounds at the same time from both apps on both keys and pads.

    • @DarkRoastRecording
      @DarkRoastRecording  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Mick Turner hey, that's what will happen if you leave both instruments monitoring live or armed to record. monitor only one track at a time if using the mpk on more than one instrument and you should be good

      the directions in the video will work the same way to program, unfortunately I don't know what those CC #s are. but you should be able to find them online somewhere. Some of the knobs work on some of the instruments in GB already, you just have to find out which ones by trial and error.

    • @DarkRoastRecording
      @DarkRoastRecording  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      downside abut Garageband is you cant premap the knobs because differeht instruments within GB use different CC midi notes to change parameters.
      Logic for iPad or Mac will allow you to do that though, or Reaper, Studio One Artist, etc.

    WHY??? is this not included in midi instructions? I've watched days of videos looking for this... Thank you for posting! I cannot understand why it is so hard to find videos like yours and instructing the basics with clear simplicity is so rare? People seem to assume so much that beginners just know. I don't. I don't think we do. ..... Now I just need to figure out how to record a song using pads to play drums and keys to play melodies... It has been no fun struggling to learn how to use mine.

I’ve done everything instructed in this very helpful video yet every time I go to test out on garage band the notes are the default map out. What am I doing wrong?

    • @DarkRoastRecording
      @DarkRoastRecording  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can think that maybe the mapping wasn’t pushed to the program in the akai after you set it up. Make sure you “send to program “ in the editor software. Then when you connect it to the ipad, make sure to switch to that program on the mpk.

      Hey, firstly, Thanks for watching! Not sure if you have done this already, but check out this link and follow the instructions there. Could be that you have an antivirus program aggressively blocking the download from finishing, or the link may have been bad. www.akaipro.com/kb/akai-pro-mpk-mini-mkii-downloading-installing-and-using-the-sample-content/

      Figured it out, it’s in the MPK software manager under “show advanced software” in the settings. No longer download it from the website! Make sure to register your device to get access to all the software it comes with.

    • @DarkRoastRecording

      yes they can, in the same way, although I don't know what the mappings are to control say, keyboard options in GB for those functions. you'd have to find that out by trial and error, or maybe by now someone has put those mappings online.

    How do i make them separate like the drum pads are programed for this sound and the piano keys and program for this sound

    • @DarkRoastRecording
      @DarkRoastRecording  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can't actually use the same midi controller for 2 instruments at the same time in a song on Garageband. Once you open a virtual instrument, it takes over the midi controller, then you open another instrument and that has control. So just program the drum pads for GB drums and the keys will always work for piano and guitar etc regardless.

    • @DarkRoastRecording
      @DarkRoastRecording  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The GB kits use different midi notes for different sounds. You would just need to find it what apple used for the 808 and program the akai the same way as in the video. Should be an online source for that somewhere

    I almost feel like my Akai MPK249 is worthless, it's got 8 knobs and 8 faders that don't do a thing and I must be the only person who ever bought one, cause there are no videos, only for the mini.

    • @DarkRoastRecording
      @DarkRoastRecording  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That controller is less popular, but really only because its more expensive and has many more features. that said, there is no way to change the knobs, faders and buttons within garageband for midi mapping to the keyboard, it all depends on what GB instrument you are using unfortunately. You may be able to do that with the new Cubasis app on iPad though. Its a mobile version of Cubase with midi support.
