    I've been practicing and working on leathercraft projects for the past year and this is the most important video/ nugget of information over the course of that year I've encountered so far; thanks a lot mate! - It's hard to express the gratitude I feel for this video.(And I don't have to shell out a bloody small fortune on illustrator)😁👍

    I also figured out if you don't want some of the holes (you only want 3 sides to have hole) you can use the delete nodes function to remove them. I am sure glad I found your videos. I have subscribed.

    The problem is that the "space between copies" is pixels and not any useful unit such as mm or inches. So you are best to make an object for a hole and split it in half vertically. Then duplicate and flip it and then separate it horizontally by the distance of the stitch you want. The "space between copies" should be set to zero so that the two hole halves meet up to make a complete hole.
    Also don't use "repeated, stretched", just use the "repeated" option and "snake".
    Use the tangential offset to dial in the stitch holes so that one lands on a desired index hole or two holes straddle a desired symmetry line.
    The method I describe will be useful for those that use a specific stitching iron/chisel and want to maintain the exact distance to match your tool.
    Honestly, that there isn't an option to use a measured unit distance from the midpoint of your object to be patterned makes me want to switch to Illustrator or some other option.

    I have my shape. Created the offset following your video. Created a circle for stitching hole and set it to object to path. When I follow this video for pattern along line (snake and repeated, distance between copies 4.5mm) it creates a bizarre bunch of stitching holes off the page and no where near where I want. Where am I going wrong?

    Really handy tutorial thanks!. do you know how to set the spacing between objects to mm? I think its in px by default. like if i want the marks to be for 3mm spacing or 6mm spacing or is it a just trial and error thing?

    • @makingmakers4355
      @makingmakers4355  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good question! I'm not aware of a way to do that directly, but the ratio of pixels to mm is set as your resolution. For me, it's 3.78 pixels for every mm. So if you wanted 3 mm, you could multiply 3.78 by 3 to get 11.34 px.
      Just in case your resolution is different than mine, you can try making a 1 mm box using the rectangle tool and the W and H settings on the top bar, then change the units to px. The W and H will then change to the equivalent amount of pixels.

    I wanted to make a credit card holder from leather, and use Inkscape for drawing and then print out the patterns. Problem is the sizes of the inkscape document don't correspond with the printed document. For example if you would draw a rectangle from 10 x 10 cm in Inscape, the printer does not print these dimensions. I don't know how that is possible.
    Thanks.

    Is there any way to do this on two pieces where you have done a union? Say a circle and square, square top round bottom.

    • @makingmakers4355
      @makingmakers4355  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you'd like to have the stitching go around the original two parts, you would need to make duplicates of those parts prior to the union (so they won't be consumed by the union) to then use as your paths for the stitching. If, on the other hand, you'd just like to have it go around the outer border of the unioned part, you should be able to use the method from the video. Let me know if that helps!

      @TheWizcam 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@makingmakers4355 I want it to go on the Inside of the union. I can get it to make the inside path of the union, but when I try and generate along the path for the holes, nothing happens. I've tried it several times.

    • @TheWizcam
      @TheWizcam 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@makingmakers4355 what you wrote made me think. I found that if I do the generate along path first, I can then do a union, then remove the holes I don't want. Thanks for making me think and look at the problem in a different way.

      @@TheWizcam I'm glad to hear you found a way that works for you! I'm curious why the first way didn't work. I know it matters the order that you select path and the object you're patterning around the path. Any idea what version of Inkscape you're using?

    I use this method myself but when applying it on 2 difrent shape size the holes do not match. Could you please explain

    • @makingmakers4355
      @makingmakers4355  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure I understand. So like if you do a set of circular holes and a set of square holes in a pattern, they don't match up? If that's the case, I suspect that's caused by the differences in sizes of the shapes being patterned (the square and the circle are slightly different sizes).
      The patterning extension only allows you to set the distance between the items, so if your items are different sizes, but you keep the distance between the same, they'll end up not quite matching up. They might be close at one point, but get worse as they proceed around the border.
      If you make the two different shapes the exact same size, it might fix the issue.

    • @abdellahabdellah1919
      @abdellahabdellah1919 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Making Makers thanks for the explanation. One more thing..should i use this method for the whole pattern of a wallet for example...including the slots...as you know the slots may be different in shape and sometimes in size. So when usibg this method individually...it may come worse when putting them together or when assembling them for the whole pattern.

    • @makingmakers4355
      @makingmakers4355  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@abdellahabdellah1919 I'm not sure on that, my expertise is more in Inkscape than in leatherworking. I'd say give both methods a shot and see which one you prefer.

    • @makingmakers4355
      @makingmakers4355  4 ปีที่แล้ว
