    Ray Charles was more than a genius. He smashed through every barrier built in front of him, blindness, death, race, drugs and a slew of other obstacles, and he came out smiling. His music was amazing, his enthusiasm never faltered. I don't think Genius is a big enough word for what this man was to music, and what he meant to the world. What a man, the world misses him DEARLY!

    He makes you forget he is blind because he's so incredible. See the attempted hand shake at the end. He totally forgot Ray couldn't see him.

    @HowDaddyIsDoing How can he write a song that was already released by someone else?

    @srercrcr a lot of people are the real authors to songs that were credited to someone else...he might have written that.

  • @HowDaddyIsDoing
    @HowDaddyIsDoing 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @srercrcr by writing it. Randy Newman did that..."Feels Like Home," "I Think It's Going to Rain Today," and several others are examples. Bob Dylan's "Mississippi" was released by Sheryl Crow a few years before he released it...there are a lot of examples. furthermore, Elvis Presley got credit for "Heartbreak Hotel," but he didnt write it at all...some guy who needed money took the cash and gave Elvis the credit. this happens all the time.

      @jayviviano109 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uh, what you said about Heart break Hotel and Elvis, not true.
      You got bad info somewhere.
      The songwriter Mae Axton herself has given plenty interviews about that song and her respect for Elvis.
      There is no story about her being ripped in anyway by Elvis.

    • @HowDaddyIsDoing

      @@jayviviano109 E. didn't write it. Tommy Durden did. E. has credit to it in his RCA Golden collection. It's possible i'm getting it mixed up with another song on that, but my point still stands...E. got credit for one of "his" songs when someone else wrote it: "this happens all the time." And it does.

    • @jayviviano109
      @jayviviano109 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HowDaddyIsDoing Mmm...Tommy Durden had the "idea" for the song, but he hadn't written it yet. He went to Mae Axton asking her for help to actually write it, at which time she sat down at a piano and helped him compose it on the spot.
      This has been well documented for many decades.
      Durden himself has spoke about this in numerous interviews.
      Furthermore he made it clear that they *gave* Elvis a third writing credit.
      Elvis was exploding all over the South and getting ready to bust wide open Nationwide, so Mae Axton had already told Elvis many months before that she was going to somehow come up with a song and give it to him to be his first Nationwide hit.
      She actually had that much foresight - before many other people did - to know that Elvis was going to bust out of the South and become a much bigger National vocalist sometime in the near future
      So when Durden came knocking at her door for help with finishing Heartbreak Hotel she said this is going to be the song we're going to present to Elvis and give him a cut the writing credit because Elvis could make that song a tremendous hit and we'll all make a lot of money.
      None of those people involved were ripped off... or felt like they got a raw deal. If anything they were quite appreciative they had an artist like Elvis to be able to make a hit out of there song and make them so much damn money.
      In fact there's over a two dozen different songwriters for Elvis that have said as much in their own interviews over the years.
      The music business has changed now and the practices of handing over songwriter credit to the singer has changed now but back then it was standard practice and one most songwriters very willingly and happily went along with.
      And as a matter of fact, to Elvis's credit, (something some people don't know, well actually *most* people don't know,) this was strictly a management decision, Elvis didn't really know any of that was going on at first.
      Once Elvis caught wind of the fact that some writers were forced into giving him partial writing credit, thereby losing some extra money coming their way, so he put his foot down and put a stop to that.
      His manager found another way to keep making extra money by forcing some songwriters to give up percentage of the publishing, instead of giving Elvis songwriting credit.
      But even in that Arrangement many of those songwriters said in interviews, (literally hundreds of them) they still made of Fortune from Elvis covering their songs... whereas with other singers they still made money, but maybe not as much.
      And as Soul Legend David Porter pointed out a couple years ago in an interview for the documentary 'The Searcher', -
      "Elvis ran his own sessions, he was the acting Producer. Probably one of the most underrated producers in music history. Elvis was in charge of many of the arrangements and also played guitar, piano, and bass guitar on some of his own recordings. The demos that often were presented to him were like many demos, very under-produced with just one or two instruments to lay down the Rhythm, and an accompanying vocalist delivering the lyrics.
      But when Elvis and his fellow bandmates got hold of these demos reworked them, and were finished, they were creating hit after hit.
      Those songwriters got more than their compensation for having Elvis cover their songs and from my understanding they were very happy to do it"
      David's write. And he lived that music era so he would know.
      People just don't fully understand the details beyond the surface level understanding or have the full context.
      So, you're correct that this type of thing happened a lot but Elvis was the wrong one to use in that case referencing Heartbreak Hotel to support your narrative.

      @@HowDaddyIsDoing No problem. And you're welcome. I wasn't trying to come on across like know-it-all.
      I know there's a lot of information (and sometimes misinformation) from that era it's hard to sift through facts or to fully understand what is what.
      Much respect though. I see many people in some discussions such as this rarely say "thanks for the info"... as you yourself did. Seems far too many people would rather dig their heels in and argue, instead of be willing to absorb new info.
      Appreciate the exchange
