    This is blowing my mind. That lawn looked so short and tight. Crazy all that was in there.

    Hi I’m a lawn geek in uk and would not have let my lawn get that thick to the point you are fetching that amount of thatch out of the lawn and let it get that soft and spongy .
    I do a hard scarification at the end of March and then I do a verticut every first week of each month during our growing seasons April to September , this reduces my lawns compaction all season and never get your problem and it keeps the lawn free of disease , helps wind blow through the grass profile and let’s water from hose sprayer or rain get right into the soil and not lay in top of the turf layer . Hope this helps and trust me keep verticut ting regular and we should see your lawn stay healthy all season . Glenn 👍

    I did this with my front lawn and the results ( Bermuda grass St. Louis Missouri. Now it’s so thick and plush . It’s so soft and healthy looking..

    Crazy how hard you can take these things down!! Seriously impressive how dense it was. I'd love to see day-to-day photos in your next video showing how fast it recovers from a scalp like that. Just took a strip of my Bermuda from 1.5" down to 1", I feel like your lawn is so healthy it will recover faster than mine. A+ content man

    • @LawnInsider
      @LawnInsider  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! The density of it is just crazy. Just an insane amount material packed into a relatively small area. I’m sure the yard is happy to breathe a bit for a couple weeks lol thanks for dropping a comment!

    It seems to me that several lighter verticuttings over a few weeks would have sufficed to thin the lawn without going to dirt and scalping the grass.
    My lawn got super thick last year and my mower started floating on the turf. I remedied the issue this year by doing light verticuts monthly.
    It will look good after it comes back, but for me, the growing season is already too short to be brown for a month during that time.

    Holy Moly that is a lot of thatch..😳 Especially how low you cut. I noticed same sponginess on my yard. Diffidently need to do a vertic cut. Thanks for the video.

    Just picked up a Classen turf seeder with the blades on it instead of the flails like on the turf rake / power rake. I mow my Bermuda at 0.5" as well. Going to run the Classen over it tomorrow. I don't want to go too hard on it this late in the season, but holy cow, you pulled a ton of debris out of yours. Really hoping that this also makes the spring scalp easier, since the mower won't be chewing through such a thick layer of stolons.

    Have you thought about a plant growth regulator? Great job with the verticutter! You needed my Snapper with the Pac-N-Sac to pick up all that debris. I love the Whatalawn shirt idea! True Texan all the way. BTW I went to the Colt 45 games while the Astrodome and Astroworld were being built... when they flipped on the lights, millions of mosquitos in the pasture south of 610 said: "Mealtime!"

    Would it have come out much different if you did scalp mow first, then verti-cut or scarify? Just thinking of pros/cons if different.

  • @TrentDecker
    @TrentDecker ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Crazy thick turf, but that is the awesome thing about bermuda is it can take this beating and come back stronger. You have had hard resets in the past year, but this was a major reset and pretty early in the year. Is your conclusion that it was because you didn't scalp this year? It still didn't work bad as you got through Memorial Day (major #1) and it should be back by July 4th (Major #2), so still a good year. But any thoughts about skipping the scalp?

    • @LawnInsider
      @LawnInsider  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I definitely think skipping the scalp didn’t help, but like you mentioned, I almost count it as a win since I was green from late February. It was a lot of work, for sure lol.

  • @richardportelli1983
    @richardportelli1983 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should look into some better bermuda varieties like T31 which produce very little thatch or thick spongey growth.

    Is there any advantage to scalping the lawn first and then verticutting?

    • @LawnInsider
      @LawnInsider  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really scalped mainly to clean it up afterwards. There were stolons sticking every which way. Verticutting first thinned it out some which made scalping a little easier as well. As far as advantages/disadvantages, I don’t think either order is going to dramatically change the outcome or the difficulty of what you’re trying to accomplish.

    When’s the best time to do this? Do you need to go ahead and relevel the lawn when this is done?

    • @LawnInsider
      @LawnInsider  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As long as your lawn has time to recover, this is ok to do. So in my area anytime between March and September practically. You definitely could do a leveling project after doing this. Probably would even want to aerate beforehand.
