Open Segmented Bowl - Episode 188

  • An open segmented bowl using Oak and Sapele. Quite a simple pattern but I also added in some smaller laminated pieces of Oak sandwiched between Sapele.
    Each ring has 24 pieces and the top is a closed Oak segmented ring also with 24 pieces. There were a total of 288 pieces I glued working on the lathe, but if you included the laminated pieces as individual pieces then there were a total of 384 pieces.
    After sanding I gave this a spray lacquer, gently sanded back again then a final light coat.

    Very nice. I need to get into my shop and try open segments. Have only done closed.

      Thank you Chris. Open segments are far easier. Check out Earls Small Segmented Shop for the master with some really good instructions. that's where I learnt all this from.

    Very well done and enjoyable video with a loads of good advice. I especially liked your glue jig set-up and the tip about making the hole larger on the back layer of the dividing ring so it can slip over the spindle.

      Thank you Mike. I try to give as much information as possible as that's how we all learn. I'm far from an expert but happy to share my experiences and what I find works for me.

    I wasn't sure how the laminates would look but in the end they really stand out. That is a very nice looking project Paul!

      Thank you Terry. Wood glue is extremely strong and with the contrasting colours make the piece stand out more.

      Thank you Bram. It's actually easier than closed segemented work as you don't have to be so accurate with the angles.

      Thank you Alan. Cutting the pieces is easy on these as you don't have to be so accurate. A chop saw would work just as well. Closed segments helps with a more accurate angle, you will be surprised what you can do with any saw on open segmented work.

      Thank you Don. Check out Earls Small Segmented Shop, he is the master and explains very well. A lot of work cutting and sanding but the results are worth it. I'm still doing fairly basic items compared to most.

    An outstanding job Paul. I really enjoyed watching you demonstrate your skill. If you haven't checked out Earl's Small Segment Shop, you should. Open segmenting is the only thing he does. Keep those great videos coming.

    beautiful work, thank you. perhaps you know where i can get a METRIC CHART (different measurementes for open segment ?) thank you again

    • @PaulLockwood
      @PaulLockwood  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I be created a spreadsheet for a mass of different measurements, it’s not specific about metric or imperial as it just works in the numbers you put in. So a 6 could mean mm / cm /inches. In sure I put a link in one of my segmented videos. If you can’t find it then see if you can drop me a private message somewhere (Instagram) may be easiest where I can either send you the file or a link to it.

    Very nice piece.
    Do you have a video of how you made your indexing table?
    Thanks
    Stan

    • @PaulLockwood
      @PaulLockwood  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Stan. I think I did one on the indexing system but not the table. The table is very basic just work on a base that locks between the bedways of the lathe and build it up so the table top is central to the chuck with it ending at the centre point.

      @@PaulLockwood thanks Paul. Probably similar to what I need to make for the basket illusion project that I want to do.

    Is there any reason why you don’t fix round sanding plate in the tail stock .? That way you can be sure the surface is completely flat, ready for next layer.

    • @PaulLockwood
      @PaulLockwood  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you hold it in the tail stock then you will always be sanding on the same part of the paper and therefore wear it out quicker. Hand holding keeps it very flat due to the speed the lathe spins. The chalk tells me when it has all been sanded flat.

  • @RICKYDENNIS49
    @RICKYDENNIS49 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have a question for you, when you put the base disc on the lathe to turn the mortise, how was it help on the lathe. .? At fist I thought that you were just holding it between centres, but then you took the tail stock away. When you turned it around, there was no holes for either a screw Chuck or faceplate ? I am intrigued. Good work all around, well done.

    • @PaulLockwood
      @PaulLockwood  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The base is on a waste block with hot belt glue. I always keep anything (especially spindles) that can be used as waste blocks in a box for this type of work.

  • @RICKYDENNIS49
    @RICKYDENNIS49 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What type of glue were you sing .? It seem to stick each piece up to a hands off stage very quickly , it looked like normal wood glue ?

    • @PaulLockwood
      @PaulLockwood  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes ordinary wood pva glue. I use the green Evostik range as it also dries clear. If you have two surfaces very flat then using a minimal amount of glue it holds very quickly. Wet runny glue is what makes wood move when you have too much. As the two pieces are flat the minimal amount of glue sweeps into the wood and creates the bond when there is no excessive glue.

    Hello can you please tell me where you got your spread sheet from for calculating the width of the open segments.

      It was something I created myself with lots of trig research. Link below should hopefully work for you.
