Mostly the main problem is both of them not marketing their books well. You'd think there would be massive promotion for Marvel and DC books with all the movies running around but I haven't seen a single one of them advertise the comics themselves.

    • @MrMankeymaster
      @MrMankeymaster ปีที่แล้ว +16

Seems like, at least with Marvel, they always just post like one TH-cam video with a motion comic for promotion. The last one I saw was the Miles and Carnage book. I wouldn't have even seen it if I didn't pay attention to my sub-box.

    • @TresBS1

The last one I remember was the trailer for DC's Death Metal Event. I remember it because they had it play as a motion comic to Marilyn Manson's Warship My Wreck. But yeah, they don't actually promote their stuff and events and story arcs just pass by without notice. I remember stumbling upon Avengers Forever recently, it was a truly fun read but I found it by pure accident.

the problem with advertisement imo is that the hollywood stuff isnt in the comics, it might be loosely adapted but like theres no jumping on point. if you watch anime you can almost always jump into manga where that anime ends, you cant do that with say antman quantumania or my adventures with superman.

My issue with Marvel recently is abject hatred towards Spider-Man. There’s a world where Peter Parker has retired as a full time Spider-Man and is more focused on raising MayDay or Annie or whomever with MJ, while he supports Miles. Its hard to get behind just how stuck a lot of Marvel characters are when Dick Grayson has been Nightwing longer than he was ever Robin. Superman can be a father. Batman can accept the Batfamily. There’s at least some progression in the circular storytelling. Meanwhile Marvel just keeps beating the shit out Peter and killing all the mutants. It’s exhausting at this point

Funny you say that because in the new series of X-men with this whole Fall of X thing the Mutants are BACK to being hated again. When will we ever rise above this and move on? Or is it just the comics way of storytelling.
This is why I like Anime better, I love seeing characters GROW, learn, get better or worse. But the story telling is impactful and sometimes emotional.

@@Nytellem comics will always have the element of circular storytelling, but man, it doesn’t have to be so pathetic in the cases of the X-Men and Peter Parker. What’s the point of killing Jean Grey for a 16th time???? Killing all the mutants again after House of M??? Why????? Cucking Peter???? Making him look up to Norman????? Having him make childhood cancer jokes??????? What’s the point of all of that? Those are my fundamental issues with Marvel right now. They come off as having contempt for what they’re writing

I became a DC fan because those were the kinds of stories that as a kid (neither is necessarily "kid friendly" these days, while the Bronze (Copper?) Age had stories that didn't target kids but were mostly safe for us to read) just interested me more. Growing up with Superfriends probably helped but it's not like they didn't have Marvel shows. The DC universe was just more fun and hopeful, a happier fantasy. I live in the real world, I don't need my fiction to reflect it. My fictional worlds should be (for me) a place I'd like to live in, and even DC was moving away from that in the 1990s.
I have favorite Marvel heroes but DC will always have a stronger place in my superhero-loving heart.

I always have such a hard time with this. I am DC, I grew up in the 90s with Batmania in particular BTAS. I also like Marvel I saw the 90s X Men Cartoon and Spiderman. However, whenever someone says DC is stories about gods and Marvel is real problems for real people I'm always on the other end of it. What I like in DC are people like Nightwing and Batman and Green Arrow, I see Green Lantern as a guy who has a badge. Outside of their rings all Green Lanterns are just brave individuals trying to uphold the law. What I read in Marvel are the fantastical. I love She Hulk and her problems trying to manage being invincible and super powered while acting with decorum in a court of law or my very favourite Marvel character Thor. The literal god of Thunder who has effectively omnipotency fighting other fantastical monsters in a magical space realm. The stuff I enjoy is DC grounded in reality and Marvel are the untouchable gods.

The crossover issue is a direct result of the movie rights. Disney's strategy was to ensure that Spider-Man, the FF, and the X-Men were out of the focus.
I remember before the Fox buyout, the days when they tried to make the Inhumans a replacement for the X-Men. It affected games, toys, you name it - just to spite Fox and Sony.
Now after the buyout, we get Xavier and Reed in MoM, Disney remake the 90s cartoon, and Lego start making X-Men again.
It's been in DC's favour for many years that they are owned entirely by WB, such that they don't have the same rights issues that Marvel do.

    • @mottom2657
      @mottom2657 ปีที่แล้ว

To add some context to your insightful writing, DC has always been financially better-off than Marvel. Marvel had to sell character rights to film studios just to survive, and they became bankrupt in 1996. And while Disney has bought Fox and Sony kind of works alongside Marvel, the Universal issue involving Hulk and Namor is still there.

Because at the end of the day all I want is good stories and for the characters to keep going and move forward and not go backwards or make bad decisions that nobody likes myself included, but that's just me and my opinion an if people disagree with me cool more power to them I won't stop them because at the end of the day we all have are own opinions. :)

I feel like your entry point into comics will determine a lot of what kind of comics you like.
Never had access to comic book material in my country and then around the mid 2000’s, I discovered marvel comics. Iron Man then came out and that pushed me to read more marvel comics to get into the lore.
I have read a lot of comics since then and have read some non-marvel runs that have stuck with me over the years but marvel just has a place in my heart.
There’s people who were introduced to comic book material proper through the Bruce Timm DCAU and that cemented their love for DC-style stories.
I even discovered Robert Kirkman’s work at Image (after a few years of reading comics, mind you) a few weeks ago and had a whole new world opened up to me.
EDIT: That said, there’s people who attach their identity to Marvel or DC and are not able to handle that the bigger world just does not care that they think The Flash is faster than Quicksilver or that Endgame made more money than JL.
It’s Disney and WB making money off of your fervor.
I know it’s hard to hear but no one else cares.
All of us here (presumably) love this medium with some of us reading (also watching and listening to) comics for years/ decades. For some of us, comic book characters were how we learnt important lessons about how to be better people and accept ourselves. Let’s not let our love devolve to presumed ownership of the medium.
There’s always enough room for everyone.

To me the writing has fallen off at Marvel. Ive been a diehard Marvel guy since the 80's.
Now i find myself buying more DC comics now, because of the writing is what Marvel used to be. Joshua Williamson's Flash hooked me and Chip Zdasrskys Batman run is keeping me there.
I said all that to say DC is winning IMO.

  • @Vyrlokar

Benny, I agree with most of what you say. I do have an issue with DC, and it's that their characters are all too far removed from humanity, and when they do try to make them more human, it often falls flat. They're archetypes, absolutes, "the most X in the world". I find that the DC characters I enjoy the most are the Justice League Dark ones, and the green lantern corps (not the parts about Green Lantern, the Justice League hero, the stories about the corps that barely intersect with the rest of the DC universe), where they might be powerful, but they're still very much human in their outlook at life. The godlike characters always seemed naive, and that's not 40 year old me speaking, it's what I've always felt since my teenage years. Marvel characters are often slightly more nuanced, and more down to earth, even with incredible cosmic powers, because they're defined by the venial flaws more than by their powers. DC characters often are "moral archetypes" or "moral absolutists".
As for Marvel being sillo-ed into their own stories, well, it might be because I'm a child of the 80s, where Actually it felt like the reverse, Marvel had a more coherent universe, while each DC hero lived in their own corner and many times didn't even make sense in the other's corner. In fact when they crossed over in the Justice League comics, they seemed very different characters, because they were kind of "re-normalized" in power level. There's no reason that Gotham exists as it is, when almost no one has powers, and any of DC's god among men would just get there and change the status quo. I know things have changed, and keep changing, and now DC is more aggressive about having a coherent interconnected world while Marvel has things more sillo-ed for legal reasons.
At the end, I do prefer Marvel's approach to storytelling, but I follow SOME of the less popular DC heroes too.

I couldn't agree more Benny. Always love hearing your insights on the comic book industry. I have never understood the Marvel Vs DC argument. Neither Marvel or DC are superior to one another. Both are filled with phenomenal and iconic storylines and characters as well as an extravagant amount of controversies, continuity errors and incohesive plots. Anyone arguing about which is better needs to realise this.

@@steakter7345 Do you really know about dc's characters? Have you ever read a run with them? I doubt it. You probably haven't even read a story arc let alone reading an entire run. But if that's the case, how can you judge them? Let me give you some perspective. Each major DC character carries with him a history of pretty much 80 years. Dc's characters are older than Marvel's. Dc's characters have more legacy, they defined the superhero genre long before marvel characters were even in the minds of their creators. Stan Lee admitted that his influences were dc's heroes when he created spider man and his other classic characters. Many generations of comic book fans grew up with dc's heroes and while these characters flop from time to time (because it is impossible for a character to remain interesting, consistent and relevant for 80 years non stop) they are still considered classic and they always come back to relevance. So tell me. Who the hell are you to judge?
