  • Just a basic no frills valve job for a local
    Customer. This 12G940 classic mini cylinder head gets its valve seats recut after fitting new guides…..

    Thank you so much for sharing your incredible skills. I was looking for long time finding a proper way to machine valve seats on my milling machine.

    An excellent video showing the capabilities of the milling machine as a seat and guide machine. I would imagine the DRO makes centering the quill with respect to the pilot a lot easier. Well done!

    Customer is foolish because we all know blending to chambers is always done to maximize air/fuel mix in and exhaust blow down out.
    I really like your video! At 72 now I used to build racing engines starting in 1967 and even did Road race Mini heads using David Visard’s new then book on porting Mini’s. Plus I did a lot of work for a guy who worked on race Triumphs 4 and 6 cylinders.
    Nice work Mate.

    Nice work. Lucky to have an optical centre finder that magnifies the holes and allows very accurate centering on the valve guides. Have found some guides that were out of round, but customers not wanted changed! Like you said,lot of leeway in factory tolerances!

    Love the Newen tooling. I have converted a old Winnona seat & guide machine to use the Newen tools Also added a VFD and DRO to help cutter speed with different size valve diameters. and DRO to match seat depths. Really brought back a excellent machine that as original was not suitable for modern heads. Clearly not as fast as a serdi 4.5 or another modern machine but very pleasant to use none the less. Cylinder head supply out of oregon USA or Goodson tools have a quality selection of cutters at great prices and no i don't work for them

    Speaking as a machinist with 37 years of experience; you don't have to be nearly that precise locating those valve guides. You don't even need the indicator with the valve cutting fixture being used. Just chucking up the mandrel and easing it into the valve guide hole and then taking down the numbers for the position would be much faster and more than precise enough for this purpose. Cheers from the US!

    • @ACDodd
      @ACDodd  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The only problem with that on these old A-series heads is the guides are not always vertical.

    • @bad406camaro

      The newen tooling ball driver head will make up for minor misalignment, but it does wear the guide pilot more when misaligned. Especially when counterboring for a new seat

    Seems like you should be checking the spindle to pilot concentricity at the top and bottom of the pilot.
    You’d be taking a lot for granted thinking that the guides are all 90° in both directions from the valve cover rail which it’s mounted from.
    I have an air float seat and guide machine and I tweak the level adjustment for each seat a little from one to the next along the line.

    • @ACDodd
      @ACDodd  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The cutter has a ball drive for a reason. That allows for alignment issues.

    Nice job and good tips. How many Kw, or horse power is this machine ? Can it service DOHC cylinder heads?

    • @ACDodd
      @ACDodd  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it can service dohc cylinder heads but the cutters will only go down to around 1.1” dia on the seat. The machine has a 3hp motor, but I run it derated to 1.6hp plenty of power for seat cutting and head skimming. You will need a proper head fixture to hold the dohc head at the required angles.

    I also have a milling machine, and want to cut my Volvo heads for hardened seats. I'm thinking about using my plain boring head to cut the pockets for the hard seat inserts.

    • @ACDodd

      Made tool to rough cut the seat recess, then use a boring head to take to final size.

    Sorry you are wrong . I am an automotive machinist of 38 years . I have used many different types of machines and insist that you must set up every seat with the individual guide because every guide is slightly different!
    Then the most important point is that you must check the valve to the seat .
    To get this perfect you need to have even movement at all points on the seat and have the seat angles the same or slightly touching on the top of the valve seat by 1/2 a degree up to 1.5 degrees depending on spec's.
    So if you put bearing blue on the valve very thinly and place the valve in the guide the blue will show you where the valve is touching . As long as the valve guides are not worn you will get an accurate indication. This point is something most people do not know .
    Lapping the valve should only be done after this is done and because of the thickness of grinding paste lapping is not an accurate check ! Hope this helps .

    • @ACDodd
      @ACDodd  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I blue check every seat I cut, and so far I have not had one that does not get full contact using this method.
