  • What to grow NOW in July! This isn't your typical video of what to sow this month. Instead, I've created an unmissable list of just 5 plants that I think you need in your gardens to give you abundance, tasty food, flowers, and all-year-round interest, without you getting overwhelmed! Don't just take my word for it... joining me this month are Catherine from ‪@DaintyDiaries‬ and Liz from ‪@LizZorab‬ with their recommendations!
For 5% discount off your seed purchases from Seeds Ireland, click here: seedsireland.ie/niallgardens I get asked so often where I get my seeds from, or if I can recommend a source… All of Seeds Ireland’s seeds are certified organic and open pollinated and you're supporting independent Irish business. I’ve found their germination rates to be great and highly recommend them!

Loving every second of this ❤ every single one of you feels so warm and passionate and uplifting. The sunflower 🌻 for the birds is absolutely amazing - they are great parking for them, not just food. They come, park on my sunflowers while waiting for critters they can hunt. At the same time they of course bless my soil with their droppings. So they don't just take but bring nutrition and pest control 💚👌 I often was watching neighbours buy packs and packs of seeds for the birds in the winter and I felt a little bad about the impact of that. To import seeds from far far away to package in plastic when these grow abundantly locally without packaging... so last few years I've been saving quite a lot of seedheads that fully matured and dried nicely, stored them in the shed. Then gave them to the neighbours to hang them where they love to feed birds in the winter months when we usually have heavy snow and nothing for the birds to eat. This way the neighbours are happy because they don't have to buy seeds and can still admire the birds. The birds are happy because they have supplies in times when there's scarcity and I'm happy because i save on the miles and plastic packaging a little. It's not a massive global scale production of course but I like to believe that every little helps.
Thank you for such delightful content. Started my day watching this and it feels like today is going to be a good day. You planted seeds of good feelings 🙏 lots of love from Latvia 🇱🇻

How nice. I moved some of my strawberries into my large pots, around the roots of larger plants, as we were having a scaffolding put up right in my strawberry bed. But now these nomadic plants are doing so well that I will not return them to the main strawberry bed. :)

Good evening Niall, great video your garden is looking very colourful. I've at last finished planting my bedding plants yesterday, and was shattered, but can now watch them grow if the pesky 🐌 and slugs keep off them, they've eaten the centre out of quite a few 😢. Take care thanks for sharing, happy gardening 😊

I have loads of strawberries plants, but they are not enough when it comes to eating em.
And this year I will again save a load of runners so hopefully they will add to my collection.
I’m gonna go sort out another grow bed for some carrots and have some red to try. Thanks liz. And I thought it too late for sunflowers as mine have been very slow growing. And have got some chocolate ones so will sow them today too. Thanks for the tips

Love your garden❤ looks fabulous! Liz is one of my favs.. so calm. I am going to look into an artichoke plant or two 🙂 I’m in southern Maine, 5b.. quite cold winters. I’m starting a bunch of perennials this month and annual houseplant care is on my to do list. I’m planting bush beans and replanting cucumbers.. my current plants are small and slow growing. We had an extremely wet and grey June.

I thought I'd be self sufficient in strawberries this year. We built a large planter along one wall and I planted an early variety, some mid season and one late variety. I thought we'd be in strawberries all summer. But my young kids have proven me wrong again. They've eaten the lot 🤦🏻‍♀️ So, I'll be finding more spaces for plants next year. Wish we had a bigger garden.

Can you go vertical? I made a couple long planters out of rain gutters (sealed on both ends) & poked drainage holes in the bottom every 18 inches or so. The top planter is hung about my shoulder height on a garden wall & the 2nd one is about 18 inches below that, & the next one another 18 inches down.

Catherine - here in South West France I am surrounded by sunflower fields. The flowers are called tournesol - that is - they turn to the sun! Niall - great idea about the lavender. I have lavender in my flower garden, but I was wondering what to put in a gap in my vegetable garden, and now I know. Thank you.

I loved this video! As someone who loves cooking & baking, I'd like to add that lavender (Lavandula angustifolia or english/true lavender) is also a culinary plant. Even if you aren't the greatest cook there are some easy things that you can do (i recommend drying the lavender flowers first for these):
    - lavender syrup for lemonade etc. (Simply boil a 1:1 ratio of sugar and water with some lavender until sugar is dissolved, and use it to make lemon lavender lemonade :) )
    - lavender tea to relax, or maybe even if you have a difficult time falling asleep. It also has a lot of health benefits (i recommend mixing dried lavender with other herbs like nettle, even mint, lemon balm, or anything you want! Add boiling water and wait for 5-8 minutes. )
    - you could also add a bit of lavender to your usual italian seasoning (don't worry, it won't stand out too much). That tastes really great with some oven roasted vegetables or potatoes
And if you're feeling adventurous or just love cooking&baking like I do there are tons of recipes here on TH-cam that use lavender as well :)

Hi! You make a very good point and I've only just realised that I didn't mention cooking with lavender! I'm particularly loving the suggestion of adding some into seasoning - that would be so good and I'm planning on doing roasted potatoes tonight!
